Before the war, visiting the Exclusion Zone was one of the strangest travel experiences you could have in Ukraine. Abandoned Pripyat, empty apartment blocks, the famous amusement park and buildings slowly being reclaimed by nature created a place that felt almost unreal. But Chernobyl also raises an uncomfortable question: should a site connected to such a huge human tragedy be a tourist destination at all? For me, visiting wasn't about taking cool photos in an abandoned city. It was about seeing with my own eyes the scale of what happened here - and how quickly an entire city can simply stop existing as a normal place to live. Some call it dark tourism. An excellent museum that narrates the story of Hitler and Berlin alongside a relatively new section called "the Ukrainian museum." Upon entering, the Ukrainian section showcases recovered Russian drones from Ukraine over the past few years, which is impressively arranged. The remainder of the museum delves into the rise of Hitler, offering an intriguing yet at times harrowing experience. Although we found it overly detailed and lengthy, it was absolutely worth the visit.

Pripyat is an unusual place in any season, but autumn changes its atmosphere completely. Yellow and orange leaves cover the empty streets, trees grow between abandoned buildings, and nature seems to be slowly taking back everything that was once part of a busy city. What struck me most was the contrast. The grey concrete of Soviet apartment blocks, schools and public buildings looks completely different surrounded by warm autumn colors. In some places, the vegetation has grown so thick that it’s difficult to imagine these streets once filled with people. There is something strangely beautiful about it, but also deeply unsettling. You’re looking at colorful autumn scenery in a city that was evacuated in 1986 and never returned to normal life. It’s definitely not the typical destination for an autumn trip, but visually it’s one of the most unforgettable places I’ve experienced. A visit to Moscow's Zyuzino district, located in the southwestern part of the capital, added several intriguing landmarks to my personal travel collection—places that, for some reason, haven’t yet drawn much attention from travel enthusiasts. The main goal of my trip was to visit the Church of Saints Prince Boris and Prince Gleb on Perekopskaya Street. After photographing this sacred spot, my journey continued toward the so-called Zyuzino Volost Park-Museum. This cozy public space, situated around 200 meters west of the church, is home to the Monument to the Heroes of Perekop. The monument is located on a small square surrounded by blue fir trees, nestled between Perekopskaya Street and a nearby pond. Installed on November 15, 1972, during the Soviet era, it commemorates two events, separated by time but connected geographically: the Perekop Isthmus, a narrow stretch of land linking Crimea to the mainland. Spanning about 30 kilometers in length and 7 to just over 9 kilometers in width, it holds significant strategic importance, having served as the sole land route to Crimea and a historical battleground. During Soviet history, two key battles occurred here. The first, the Perekop-Chongar Operation, took place from November 7 to 17, 1920, under the command of Mikhail Frunze. This operation led to the defeat of the White Army and secured Crimea but at a great cost, with over 10,000 casualties reported. This battle’s importance is even poetically captured in Marina Tsvetaeva’s poem "Perekop." The second was the assault on Perekop during the Crimean Offensive, from April 8 to May 12, 1944, conducted by the Red Army, Black Sea Fleet, Azov Flotilla, and others. Soviet losses reached approximately 85,000, including nearly 18,000 deaths. To honor these two significant operations, the decision was made to erect a monument in Moscow, with the apt location being Perekopskaya Street. This street, along with others in southwest Moscow, was renamed in 1965 to commemorate cities in southern Ukraine and Crimea, such as Sevastopol Avenue and Kerch Street. As seen in my photos, the monument consists of a vertically placed rectangular pink granite stele on two stone blocks. The facade features a silhouette of a Red Army soldier in a Budyonny hat and another in a helmet, accompanied by the inscription "To the Heroes of Perekop 1920–1944." The reverse lists military units that participated in the battles. What amazed me was learning that the monument's original design came from a Soviet schoolboy, Vadim Yermolaev, from a nearby school in Zyuzino. Though later refined by professionals like architect V.L. Voskresensky and artist Y.S. Zimin, this adds a unique charm to the monument. It's a distinct historical site worth visiting—don’t overlook it!

In the far right background along the horizon, you can spot the distant white silhouettes of wind turbines stretching across the mountain ridges. Starting from Volovets, you climb steeply up through ancient beech forests. You will first hit a sub-peak known locally as Tsytsia (1,219m) before reaching the cross at the summit of Mount Temnatyk. From Temnatyk, an easy, wide grassland ridge trail takes you directly over to Mount Plai and its weather station.The Descent (Yellow Trail): From Plai, the trail guides you past an old, abandoned cheese factory and winds back down into the Volovets valley.

We liked everything about this hotel—it boasts a well-maintained territory, spotless rooms, and friendly staff. The food selection was vast and catered to all tastes. The head chef often appeared in the restaurant to greet guests and oversee the dishes, which added a welcoming touch. The bartender by the pool made fantastic drinks. Special thanks to Walid, who cleaned our two rooms impeccably. He is a true professional; the rooms always smelled fresh and had clean towels, bedding, shampoo, water—everything we needed.
