Chasing views above the clouds at Puy de Dôme
This place honestly surprised me more than I expected. I visited Puy de Dôme during my trip, and the view from the top was just insane.
You can clearly see the whole Chaîne des Puys, and it really feels like you’re standing on another planet. The hike wasn’t too hard, but still enough to feel rewarding. If you don’t want to hike, there’s also a panoramic train going up.
The weather changes quickly, so try to go on a clear day — it makes a huge difference. I just sat at the top for a while, enjoying the wind and the view. Definitely one of the most memorable spots in France for me.
If you like nature and unique landscapes, you really shouldn’t miss this place.

BEST mountain 3h away from Paris🌋
This is hands down the most stunning volcanic mountain ever—Puy de Sancy! 🌋 The vibes here are next level: super spiky peaks, jaw-dropping scenery, and a hiking experience that’s truly one-of-a-kind. If you’re craving fresh air and adventure just 3 hours from Paris, this is IT.
Here’s how to make it happen: Catch a TGV train from Paris Gare de Bercy to Clermont-Ferrand (about 2 hours—so quick! 🚄). From Clermont-Ferrand, hop on a bus to Mont-Dore, the cute little mountain town that’s the gateway to Puy de Sancy. (Pro tip: Check bus timetables on trip.com before you go!)
Your hike starts in Mont-Dore (63150 Mont-Dore, France), and let me tell you, every step is pure magic. The trails are easy to navigate, and the summit view is totally epic—like, “Did I just hike up an actual volcano?!” kind of epic. The main hike usually takes around 3 to 4 hours round trip, depending on your pace. ⏱️
The best time to visit is spring through early autumn (April–October), when the trails are open and the wildflowers are poppin’! 🌸 If you’re into cable cars, there’s also a funicular ride that goes partway up for extra chill vibes.
So if you want to swap city streets for some unforgettable mountain energy, Puy de Sancy is sooo worth the journey. Bring your best hiking shoes, a charged phone for the crazy good pics, and get ready to be amazed! 🤩
Address: Puy de Sancy, 63 700, France
Starting point: Mont-Dore, 63150, France
Opening hours: 24/7 for hiking; cable car operates approx. 9am–5:30pm (April–October).
Transport: Paris → Clermont-Ferrand (train), Clermont-Ferrand → Mont-Dore (bus) — all bookable via trip.com

Volcano Crater in France
Nevers & Orcines: Hiking Into Volcano Land 🌋🌲
Ready to escape the usual city hustle? I explored Nevers and Orcines, diving into wild landscapes and epic volcanic vibes. The highlight: hiking up a volcanic crater in Orcines, with misty mountain views and dramatic clouds (seriously, it felt like the world ended just over the horizon).
Must-See Spots:
· Volcanic Crater, Orcines: Start your hike at the Puy de Dôme (chemin du Puy de Dôme, 63870 Orcines). Go early to beat the crowds and clouds—mornings are best for clear views.
· Nature Trails: The area is dotted with scenic paths through rolling hills and forests. Rainy? Bring waterproof shoes—the trails get muddy but the fog makes the views magical.
· Nevers Cathedral: Don’t miss a wander through the Gothic Nevers Cathedral (Place Saint-Cyr, 58000 Nevers), open daily 8am–7pm.
My Best Hiking Tip:
Wear layers! The weather changes fast here—one moment it's clear, the next you're walking in a cloud. Water-resistant gear is a must for those moody rainy days.
Getting Around:
· Car rental is ideal, especially for spontaneous hikes.
· Trains link Nevers with Clermont-Ferrand. From there, a local bus or taxi takes you to Orcines and the crater.
Where to Eat:
· Grab picnic supplies from local bakeries (Nevers has great baguettes!)
· After hiking, treat yourself to classic French comfort food at Restaurant Le Puy de Dôme (near the base of the volcano).
Extra Tips:
· No visa hassles if you’re EU/Schengen.
· Most payments are card-friendly, but keep some cash for small shops or rural cafes.

France Auvergne Monts Dore Puy de Sancy Mossy Volcanic Lake
#bucketlistdestinations Puy de Sancy is the highest peak in the Massif Central. I took the train from Clermont-Ferrand to La Bourboule (€15), then a local bus to the Super-Besse ski resort (€3). The hike to the Mossy Volcanic Lake (Lac de Servières) is an easy 2km loop from the parking lot (€4 for parking, cash only). The lake is a crater lake, formed in the caldera of an extinct volcano. The shores are covered in a thick, emerald moss that gives the water an otherworldly glow.
I visited in early summer. The air was cool and smelled of wet stone and wildflowers. My mistake was wearing sandals; the moss is slippery, and the trail is rocky. A local couple, picnicking by the lake, offered me a spare pair of wool socks to put over my sandals for better grip. “In the Auvergne, we are always prepared for the mountain,” the woman said with a laugh.
The lake is a place of profound stillness. The moss acts as a natural filter, keeping the water crystal clear. I sat by the shore for an hour, watching the clouds reflect in the water. The volcanic landscape is both dramatic and serene. It’s a reminder that even in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption, life finds a way to create beauty. The mossy lake is a hidden gem in the heart of France, a place that feels a million miles away from the bustle of Paris.
Does the volcanic origin of a place like Puy de Sancy make its current serene beauty more or less meaningful?

Solo with the Silent Stones: The Funeral Chapel of Chambon-sur-Lac
#hellohalloween
Some journeys are about grand cathedrals; others are about quiet, powerful whispers from the past. My solo trip to the Funeral Chapel (La Chapelle Funéraire) in Chambon-sur-Lac was a profoundly moving encounter with memory, art, and the deep, enduring soul of the Auvergne.
My Perfect Solo Itinerary: An Hour of Reflection
11:00 AM - A Lakeside Approach
I began my day by the serene Lac de Chambon, the water glittering under the sun. The short walk from the lake to the village churchyard set a contemplative mood. The chapel isn't a grand, standalone monument, but sits quietly in the shadow of the village church, its Romanesque simplicity belying the treasure within.
11. 15 AM - A Portal to the 12th Century
Stepping through the heavy, ancient door was like crossing a threshold in time. The air was cool and still. The chapel is small, intimate, and empty save for its true marvel: a collection of remarkable 12th-century frescoes.
As a solo visitor, I had the sacred space entirely to myself. I could sit on the simple stone bench and simply gaze, without distraction. The frescoes, though faded by centuries, depict scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary with a raw, powerful emotion. The deep lapis lazuli blue and earthy red pigments seemed to glow in the dim light. The silence was not empty, but full of the weight of 800 years of prayer and memory.
12. 00 PM - A Moment in the Churchyard
After the intensity of the chapel, I stepped back outside into the sunny churchyard. I found a bench overlooking the rolling hills of the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne. It was the perfect spot to process the quiet power of what I had just witnessed—a moment of solitary reflection that felt both peaceful and profound.
Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered:
· The Key is the Key: Rural chapels like this are often locked to protect their treasures. The key is usually held by the local Mairie (town hall) or a designated guardian (often pointed out by a sign on the door). A polite request and a "bonjour" are all you need.
· Savour the Silence: This is not a place to rush. Give yourself the gift of time to just be present with the art and the atmosphere.
· Embrace the Journey: The chapel is the centerpiece of a beautiful region. Combine your visit with a walk around the lake or a drive through the volcanic landscape.
· Look for the Details: Notice the ancient stonework, the worn step, the way the light falls. The building itself is a historical document.
The Funeral Chapel of Chambon-sur-Lac doesn't offer opulence. It offers authenticity. For a solo traveler, it’s a rare and precious gift—a moment of pure, uninterrupted connection with art, history, and one's own thoughts.
