The theme of this trip: A Cherry Blossom Journey. This was my first time visiting Shikoku. I didn't know much about it before the trip, but I absolutely fell in love with it once I arrived! Not only do you get to experience the local Japanese lifestyle up close, but the relatively low number of tourists makes for an incredibly high-quality travel experience! This time, I'm highlighting "Ise Asahiyama Hongu" in Mitoyo City. Nestled halfway up the mountain, you're greeted by cherry blossoms in full bloom lining the road as you drive up 🌸. I was initially worried that the light rain today might ruin the blooming season, but seeing this instantly hyped me up! The shrine draws people in with its mystical vermilion torii gate and thatched grass ring (Chinowa). There are plenty of flat parking lots 🅿️. Everywhere you look, Japanese families are laying out picnic mats under the trees to enjoy the cherry blossoms 🌸. With a gentle breeze blowing, it's just so relaxing! There are about 2,000 cherry trees here. Surrounded by the vibrant blossoms in full bloom, you feel a profound sense of spiritual healing just being here! Hiking further up, you get a beautiful panoramic view overlooking the Great Seto Bridge. The breathtaking scenery combining the mountains, cherry blossoms, the ocean, and the Great Seto Bridge is simply stunning! Kagawa is packed with spots where you can enjoy both history and stunning views! If you're unsure about your travel plans, these are the places to start! 🙌✨ ✅1. The Marine Liner runs under the Great Seto Bridge heading towards Okayama ⇄ Takamatsu. From the train window you can see the small island of Nabeshima in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture. The white building on Nabeshima is the Nabeshima Lighthouse. The chance and timing is short, but I think it's a memorable building to see from the train window. If I have time, I'd like to go. #SetoOhashiBridge #SetoOhashiBridgeLine You can't stop at the Seto Ohashi Bridge to take pictures or look at it. This time I tried to look at the Seto Ohashi Bridge while riding the Seto Ohashi Bridge Line. The Seto Ohashi Bridge Line also passes over the Seto Ohashi Bridge, so it seems difficult to take pictures, but there is a point along the way where it curves, so I aimed to take pictures there. This train is the Rapid Marine Liner, which connects Okayama and Takamatsu, and if you make a reservation in advance, you can enjoy the panoramic seats in the front car (separate reserved seat fee required). The train I rode this time was a regular car for which no fee is charged, but the interior has reversible cross seats, so if you can secure a seat, it is very comfortable and a good train for taking pictures.

If your itinerary is Okayama/Kurashiki → Takamatsu, Kojima is a great place to spend half a day in between without needing to backtrack. My actual route that day: JR Kojima Station → Kojima Jeans Street → Strolling and shopping on Jeans Street → Return to Kojima Station → Marine Liner across the Seto Ohashi Bridge → Takamatsu 👖 Kojima Jeans Street Kojima is an important production hub for Japanese-made jeans. Kojima Jeans Street is about a 15-minute walk from JR Kojima Station. The street is about 400 meters long, with local denim brands, factory stores, and long-standing shops concentrated in this area. Business hours vary, so it's best to check in advance if there's a specific shop you want to visit. You can see many denim elements starting from the station: stairs, installations, and street signs. Once you reach Jeans Street, there are even rows of jeans hanging directly on the street. This isn't a commercial street with densely packed shops, so I actually think 2–3 hours is the perfect amount of time. You can take your time, check out the brands, and take photos—it's worth it even if you don't buy anything. I didn't specifically plan to shop that day, so I spent a lot of time just wandering around. When the wind blew, the jeans overhead kept swaying, which actually became my most memorable image of Kojima. 🚆 Kojima → Takamatsu After exploring, return to JR Kojima Station and continue on the Marine Liner rapid train to Takamatsu. The Marine Liner connects Okayama and Takamatsu. The front of the train has double-decker cars, and you can see the Seto Inland Sea from the second-floor Green Car. I happened to get a window seat that day, and I caught the sunset just as the train was crossing the Seto Ohashi Bridge. This section is truly worth saving a window seat for. Below the bridge is the Seto Inland Sea, and along the way, you can see islands, the sea, and the bridge structure alternating. If you can time it for the evening, the entire "half-day in Kojima + crossing the sea to Takamatsu" route will feel much more complete than just visiting Jeans Street alone. 📌 Practical tips ◎ Duration: 2–3 hours recommended for Kojima ◎ Transport: About a 15-minute walk from JR Kojima Station to Jeans Street ◎ Shops: Business days and hours vary; check in advance if you want to buy from a specific brand ◎ Continuing to Takamatsu: Return directly to Kojima Station to take the Marine Liner; it's very convenient ◎ Sea views: Try to get a window seat. If you want to sit on the second floor of the double-decker car, confirm the Green Car seat availability and whether your ticket covers it when booking ◎ Who it's for: People who are already traveling from Okayama/Kurashiki toward Takamatsu and are interested in jeans, industrial towns, or the railway scenery of the Seto Inland Sea What I recommend most about this route isn't any single "must-visit attraction," but rather how well it connects: spend the morning or afternoon exploring Kojima Jeans Street, then take the JR across the Seto Ohashi Bridge to Takamatsu in the evening. It's not too rushed for a half-day, and you don't have to go out of your way just for one small town.

Utazu is a small town located in Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan. It's known for its historical salt production and as a scenic spot to see the Seto Ohashi Bridge, a bridge connecting Shikoku and Honshu islands. The town's iconic Gold Tower, a tall tower, offers panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea.

Sanuki Udon! Okayama is actually a great travel destination even for a 1-night, 2-day trip! ✨ It's been a while since my last post about Japan! ♡ This time, I've put together a recommended Okayama itinerary that I actually enjoyed. ☺️ Day 1: · Udon no Tsukasa Takato · Kojima Jeans Street · Seto Ohashi Bridge Cruising · Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter Day 2: · Take the Seto Ohashi Line to Kagawa · Okaizumi Udon · Okayama Castle · Korakuen Garden Among these, I highly recommend the Seto Ohashi Bridge cruise from the sea. 🚤 The thrill of passing under the bridge is incredible, and it's a view you wouldn't see on a regular sightseeing trip! ✨ The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is especially atmospheric in the evening and at night, so I recommend it! ☺️ #MustSeeSpots

The Great Seto Bridge connects Honshu (Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture) and Shikoku (Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture) in Japan. Opened in 1988, it spans a total length of 13.1 kilometers (9.4 kilometers for the bridge section) and holds the Guinness World Record as the "world's longest combined road and rail bridge." The bridge consists of six structures (suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and truss bridges) and features two levels: the upper level for expressways and the lower level for JR railways, making it a significant local landmark. This time, the focus is on the sunset view. The Washuzan Second Observatory is a great spot to enjoy the sunset. If you plan to take the bus, note that the last bus departs at 17:58. Missing this bus would require you to either take an Uber or drive yourself down the mountain. The sunset may occur around 18:00 or later (please check online for the exact sunset time). If you choose the bus, you might feel reluctant to leave... Another option is to take the special sunset viewing bus (Washuzan Sunset Viewing Bus), which departs from Kojima Station. The departure time varies each month depending on the sunset time.

This time, we drove around and spent a day packed with the charms of Kagawa, not just udon, but also breathtaking views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge and popular tourist spots! ✨ 🌉 An exhilarating drive across the Seto Ohashi Bridge First, we headed to the Seto Ohashi Bridge, the massive suspension bridge connecting Honshu and Shikoku! · Breathtaking ocean views: The contrast between the blue of the Seto Inland Sea and the scattered islands visible from the car window is stunningly beautiful. · Yoshima PA: Taking photos at the rest area along the way is highly recommended. You'll be overwhelmed by the sheer power of the bridge when you see it up close. 🍜 Fueling up with authentic Sanuki udon When you come to Kagawa, you simply can't miss "udon." · The clear broth and glossy noodles in the photo. Simple yet with a satisfying chewiness, it's an experience you can only have in its place of origin. 🍗 Shockingly Delicious! Ikkaku's Bone-in Chicken In the evening, we went to **Ikkaku**, a restaurant that could be called the soul food of Kagawa Prefecture residents. · Bone-in Chicken: Juicy meat with a strong spice flavor. The deliciousness bursts forth with every bite! · A Connoisseur's Way: Dipping rice balls into the leftover sauce on the plate is the ultimate moment of happiness. 👾 A Relaxing Spot: Yadon Park We also stopped by **Yadon Park** (Hidamari Park Ayagawa), filled with Yadon, the Udon Prefecture PR team. · Photogenic: Yadon are everywhere in the park, making every photo a relaxing experience. · Enjoyable for Adults: Surrounded by the laid-back Yadon, we were able to relive our childhood and enjoy a leisurely time. Yoshima Parking Area floating in the Seto Inland Sea ✨ We took a drive across the Seto Ohashi Bridge from Kagawa to Okayama! Yoshima Parking Area is located almost in the center of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. From here, you can really feel the imposing power of the massive bridge up close. This place offers beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea while relaxing and unwinding from your travels, and there are several recommended photo spots ☝️ First, there's Wataru's Camera Stand. Place your smartphone on the car sitting on Wataru's head and it doubles as a stand! Use the timer to take a stunning photo with the Seto Ohashi Bridge in the background 📸 Second, there's Yoshima Observatory. This is the best spot for a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea, so be sure to take your favorite shot! The Great Seto Bridge, known as the world's longest combined railway and road bridge, traverses the Bisan Strait, a body of water that once lay between Bizen Province, Bitchu Province (together the coastal areas of Okayama Prefecture), and Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture). Building a bridge across this strait was a long-cherished dream of postwar Japanese society, but opinions were sharply divided over the site. Ultimately, the route connecting Kojima in Okayama Prefecture and Sakaide in Kagawa Prefecture was selected. One of the reasons for this was the chain of small islands in the Shiwaku Islands directly below the route, which could be used as the bridge's foundation. Completed after a decade of massive construction, the Seto Ohashi Bridge, a collection of six bridges connecting the islands spanning a total length of over 9 km, marks a significant milestone in Japan's civil engineering and economic history. Meanwhile, the climate, history, and activities of this maritime region are also conveyed through the architectural masterpieces built overlooking the bridge. ① Seto Inland Sea History and Folklore Museum (Photos 2-7, Takamatsu City) Goshikidai, overlooking the Bisan Seto Strait from the east, is closely associated with Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, founded by Kukai (774-835), a native of Sanuki Province. Behind it is Shiramine, dedicated to the Retired Emperor Sutoku (1119-1164). Standing at the tip of this plateau is the Seto Inland Sea History and Folklore Museum. This museum uses exhibits to interpret the history of the Seto Inland Sea region and the lifestyles that shaped it. At the same time, it is widely recognized as a masterpiece of modern Japanese architecture, having been selected for the "First Public Architecture Award Excellence Award" in 1988. Its designer, Tadashi Yamamoto (1923-1998), was born in what is now Sanuki City and had the unusual career of competing in the Olympic triple jump while working for the Kagawa Prefectural Government. In 1958, he attended the design of the Kagawa Prefectural Government Building by Kenzo Tange (1913-2005), which inspired him to study the theory of modernist architecture. He gained insight from the many artists and designers who gathered in Kagawa Prefecture at the time, and went on to design public buildings for Kagawa Prefecture himself. Yamamoto was rooted in the climate of the Seto Inland Sea region and aimed to create architecture that blends in with the landscape. The Seto Bridge Tower operates like an amusement ride. Every 20 minutes, a circular platform resembling a flying saucer ascends 100 meters into the sky while rotating, then descends back down. The entire experience lasts about 10 minutes. You can sit in place and enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. Unlike the Gyro Drop, there are no safety bars; you sit on plastic chairs inside an enclosed space with windows, so you are not affected by the wind. The tower is equipped with air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience even during summer or winter. Previously, I visited the Gold Tower, which features an aquarium inside its observation deck, creating a mystical atmosphere. In contrast, the Seto Bridge Tower’s observation deck is located in the middle of a bridge over the sea, giving you the sensation of floating above the water. Initially, the ascent and rotation might feel a bit scary, sending chills down your spine, but you quickly adapt. It’s like riding a soft version of the Gyro Drop without the free fall. Its open structure allows you to enjoy views from both the lower and upper levels. If you’re traveling to Takamatsu or Okayama, you can reach the tower via Sakai Station, where a local bus operates four times a day, making it accessible by public transportation. This time, upon a local friend's recommendation, I took an intercity bus from Matsuyama in Ehime to Okayama. Not only was the journey smooth and comfortable, but the cost was also several thousand yen cheaper than taking the JR train. Let’s talk about the bus experience. The departure point in Matsuyama is Matsuyama Station, but since I was staying near Okaido, I boarded the bus there, saving myself the hassle of backtracking. I must commend Japan's punctuality—the bus arrived exactly on schedule. Tickets were purchased in advance at the Iyo Bus Okaido Service Center, and the driver assisted with loading luggage and confirming seats. The entire trip took about three hours, which is roughly the same as taking the JR train. Midway, the bus stopped at Toyohama Rest Area in Kagawa before crossing the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
