A Lovely Resort with Stunning Property but Mixed Service
I traveled to Lopesan from June 25 to July 2 with my husband for our anniversary. Overall, it was a great trip! For context, this was my first visit to the Dominican Republic, and my previous experiences have been at Riu resorts in Mexico, so my expectations weren’t too high initially. That said, some aspects of the trip stood out positively or negatively. I was especially worried about food poisoning, but fortunately, we avoided it by taking precautions like brushing our teeth with bottled water, avoiding salads, removing lettuce from meals, and opting for fresh and hot foods at the buffet.
· *Airport Transfer: 9/10**
We used NexusTours for a private transfer, and it was quick and convenient. No complaints here. Airport check-in was slightly chaotic but manageable. Returning was seamless; however, one of the gentlemen at the airport grabbed our luggage to take us to the airline counter, which felt unnecessary and a bit like pressure to tip. It would have helped if the Nexus driver had warned us about this, though we figured it might just be how things are done.
· *Resort Check-In/Check-Out Process: 7/10**
Check-in at reception was smooth and fast. We were prepared for something like a cold welcome drink, but there wasn’t one—slightly disappointing. Our bellhop didn’t speak English, and there was a brief miscommunication that made the interaction uncomfortable; however, we worked through it.
· *Property: 10/10**
The resort is jaw-droppingly beautiful. I have no words to describe its thoughtfulness in design, from the coffee shop and sports bar to the theatre lobby and restaurants. The pools were scenic and conveniently located, not far from our room. The resort is large but manageable to walk around, and we got around 10,000–15,000 steps daily. Although places like the sports bar got packed during major FIFA games, nothing else ever felt overly crowded.
We loved the boulevard and made it part of our daily routines, either for day or evening visits—it was always enjoyable.
· *Rooms: 8/10**
Our room was clean, well-kept, and smelled fresh. Room 4194 had a portable AC unit running constantly, keeping it cool. Bringing DampRid likely helped maintain moisture control. The bathroom design was odd—you could see someone on the toilet, which was not ideal. Though a double sink wasn’t available, the counter space worked fine. One issue: the slippery bathroom floor, which had no bath mats, so we used towels to reduce the risk.
· *Pools: 9/10**
The main pool was massive and never felt crowded despite its popularity. The warm water wasn’t my favorite, but it’s summer in the Caribbean, so it’s expected. Aside from that, we stumbled upon the lagoon pool, which was stunning and cooler than the main pool. Although it wasn’t clear if we were technically allowed entry, nobody stopped us, and we spent two enjoyable days there. Definitely visit the lagoon pool if you can!
· *Food Overall: 7/10**
It's an all-inclusive resort, so my food expectations weren't high. While some restaurants were excellent, the buffet disappointed.
· *Buffet: 3/10**
The Caribe/Atlantico buffet lunch was decent, but breakfasts and dinners were pretty bad—dry, overcooked meat, poorly made eggs, and long omelette lines. The small buffet size felt surprising for such a big property. The poolside buffet and beach BBQ buffet weren’t great either; I skipped them frequently due to food poisoning worries.
· *Restaurants:**
· El Charro (Mexican): 10/10 — We dined here twice and loved it.
· Inari: 10/10 — Teppanyaki show was fun; food impressed my husband the most.
· El Asador (Steakhouse): 6/10 — Appetizers were good, but the pork chop was tough.
· Gondola (Italian): 8/10 — I enjoyed the lasagna and cannelloni; my husband didn’t like the pesto.
· YOLO: 10/10 — Best service by far; taco nachos were delicious.
· *Bavaro Coffee:** I only visited once; while it was gorgeous inside, my caramel macchiato tasted bad.
· *Ice Cream Shop: 4/10**
One freezer seemed broken, with melting ice cream. The chocolate ice cream was decent, but the stale nuts weren’t appealing.
· *The Valley: 9/10**
Great drinks and lunch, dinner was tasty, though breakfast wasn’t as good.
· *Service: 6/10**
Service varied significantly. Some staff were amazing; others seemed uninterested. At restaurants, servers often rushed to clear plates, which came off as pushy. Language barriers made things harder since most staff spoke Spanish, which impacted our Canadian experience more than multilingual guests.
· *Room Service: 8/10**
Food arrived within an hour most of the time. They occasionally messed up the order, but breakfast room service was excellent. Mid-trip, the app started showing a $10 USD fee for room service, so we stopped using it, although we personally weren’t charged.
· *Pool Service: 0/10**
Poolside drink service essentially doesn’t exist. On the first day, someone claimed they’d take our order, but the drinks never arrived. Walking to the bar wasn’t a big deal, though I recommend an insulated mug to keep drinks cool longer.
· *Entertainment:**
Despite initial concerns from other reviews, I found the entertainment surprisingly good! Daily happenings occurred at the main pool at 3 p.m., and there were events like the all-white beach party, DJ nights in lobby areas, and nightclub shows. Checking the app ensured we didn’t miss anything. The resort does quiet down after midnight, but options like The Valley, sports bar, and casino remain open.
· *Pros:**
· Always enough pool loungers; no need for early-reservation hassle.
· Clean and exquisitely maintained property brimming with activities.
· Easy restaurant booking two days ahead via app.
· Housekeeping checked our room consistently, though skipping bathroom counter cleaning.
· *Cons:**
· Random sewage smells around the property, with one bad incident at the lobby bar.
· Weak or uninterested bar service.
· Buffet dinner lacked quality control and AC airflow.
· No poolside service or swim-up bars.
· *Overall Thoughts:**
I genuinely enjoyed my stay, but I doubt I’d return due to service concerns. The staff wasn’t particularly warm or welcoming, which often made us feel out of place—especially at bars like the lobby bar. That said, the property is stunning, and though our experience was memorable, things like inconsistent service would factor heavily into any decision to revisit.
