Haute-Savoie travel guide and discussion

For the first time, I truly felt the limitations of language! Just as the literary giant Victor Hugo said after visiting: “No matter how I write, my words cannot capture the beauty of Annecy.” The Enlightenment thinker Rousseau also spent the best 12 years of his life here. The town of Annecy is located in the Haute-Savoie department in southeastern France, nestled against the Alps and formed around Lake Annecy, created by glaciers melting 18,000 years ago. It has long been an important commercial and religious center on the French-Swiss border. In the 10th century, it belonged to the Count of Geneva. In the 16th century, it became a core area of the Counter-Reformation and was nicknamed “Savoy Rome.” It officially became part of France in 1860. The Thiou River cuts the medieval old town into lively waterways. Candy-colored half-timbered houses line the water, with flowers climbing the windowsills, earning it nicknames like “Venice of the Alps” and “Balcony of the Alps.” Lake Annecy, crystal clear to the extreme, ranks as Europe’s purest lake. Snow-capped mountains, turquoise water, ancient alleys, and stone bridges blend perfectly here. Without the noise of commercialization, it offers a slow-paced French romance, making it the ultimate hidden gem for European small-town travel🌿 ✅Must-see spots (core attractions) 1️⃣. Palais de l'Île The city logo of Annecy, built in 1132 on a small island in the canal. Its overall shape resembles a stone ship moored on the water. Eight hundred years ago, it was a fortress of the Count of Geneva and later served as a mint, courthouse, and prison. The damp stone walls hold the millennia of change in the Savoy region. It is now a city history museum. No mandatory ticket is required to enter. The stone bridges and walkways on both sides of the canal are free photo spots. Early mornings have no tourists blocking the view, and the water reflections create a perfect atmosphere🏯 2️⃣. Annecy old town The medieval street layout is fully preserved, with winding cobblestone paths, colorful Savoy half-timbered houses, and carved stone bridges. The streets are filled with creative shops, outdoor cafes, and flower shops. Saint François Square and the Cathedral of Our Lady are tucked inside the alleys. Strolling here immerses you in the lively atmosphere of a thousand-year-old town. 3️⃣. Lake Annecy Formed by Alpine glacier meltwater, the lake shows distinct layers of Tiffany blue with exceptional visibility. You can cycle around the lake, rent pedal boats to float on the water, sit on the lakeside lawn to gaze at the snow-capped mountains, and feed the swans leisurely swimming by🦢 4️⃣. Love Bridge The meeting place of Rousseau and Madame de Warens, facing the entire lake view and the Alpine mountain outline. At sunset, the sun spreads across the lake, making it an excellent spot for portraits and panoramic shots. Couples visit here to symbolize locking in their romance💕 5️⃣. Annecy castle Located on the old town’s high ground, the rooftop terrace offers a panoramic view of the red-tiled old town, canals, Lake Annecy, and distant snow mountains. The museum inside displays millennia of artifacts from the Savoy region. ✅Transportation 1. Intercity arrival 🛬Plane: The nearest hub is Geneva International Airport in Switzerland. Airport shuttles go directly to Annecy, about a 1-hour drive; 🚄High-speed train: Take the TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon, 3.5–4 hours direct to Annecy train station; 🚚Self-drive: You can drive from Geneva or Lyon, ideal for a French-Swiss loop trip. 2. Getting around town Motor vehicles are banned throughout the old town. Walking is the best way to explore. Bikes and electric scooters can be rented to tour around the lake. 🅿️Parking info: Public parking is available outside the old town at Paquier and near the train station. Self-drive vehicles must park outside the old town walls, with a 5–10 minute walk to the core area. No parking is available inside the old town. ✅Practical tips 1. Best time to visit: June–September, when the lake is clearest and temperatures are comfortable for water activities; September–November, when the surrounding forests turn red with autumn leaves, creating a strong fall atmosphere. 2. Closed days: Palais de l'Île and Annecy castle museum are closed every Tuesday. Plan your itinerary to avoid these days to prevent missing out. 3. What to wear: The Alpine region has large temperature differences between day and night. Even in summer, bring a light windbreaker. The old town has many cobblestone streets, so wear comfortable flat shoes. 4. Local food: Recommended dishes include Savoy cheese fondue, blueberry tart, and onion tart. Dining at canal-side restaurants offers both great food and views. 5. Annual highlight: The international animation festival is held every June, attracting animation fans worldwide and creating a unique atmosphere in the town.

If you have 48 hours away from Paris, Annecy is the place to go. At only 3h45 hours from Paris by train, Annecy is beautiful from the old town, but seeing it from the lake is something else entirely. We spent 48 hours between the mountains and the water—morning hikes, long lunches, and the best kind of slow afternoons. The highlight? Renting our own electric boat and taking it out onto the lake. No skipper, no schedule—just us, the Alps and impossibly clear blue water. We stayed at La Maison Bleue in Veyrier-du-Lac, a tiny 11-room Relais & Châteaux hotel right on the lake. Every room has a lake view, and having our own little base away from the centre made the whole stay feel incredibly peaceful. (Yoann Conte) And then there was dinner at La Table de Yoann Conte—two Michelin stars, right on the lake, with a menu inspired by the Alps and Brittany. (Relais & Châteaux) Add a hike through the mountains and suddenly 48 hours feels nowhere near enough. Annecy is one of those places where slowing down is the whole point. 💙

#citybreakvsnatureescape One of my favorite things about traveling through France is seeing how quickly the scenery can change. After enjoying urban streets, cafés, and historic attractions, being surrounded by the French Alps felt like entering another world. I spent time walking through alpine areas, stopping to admire the peaks, and enjoying the quieter pace. The mountains gave me a chance to disconnect from the usual sightseeing routine while still experiencing local villages and cafés nearby. It was a memorable combination of culture and nature for #citybreakvsnatureescapeape.

This trip was meticulously planned, involving a full year of physical and resistance training in 2025 for a 12-day trek on the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB). This is a thoroughly prepared journey, involving a year of dedicated fitness and strength training in 2025 for a 12-day TMB trek, spanning 100km across the borders of Switzerland, France, and Italy with a total ascent of 7,500 meters. Along the route are cozy mountain huts, pastures, and beautiful, unidentified flora, all set against the majestic mountain scenery of Mont Blanc rolling across the horizon. This is a memory created in this beautiful era that I will be proud of for a lifetime.

#underratedspots Wandering through the cobblestone streets of Chamonix, where every single turn rewards you with a view of Mont Blanc. 🏔️✨ From the historic Savoyard chalets in town to the highest peaks in Europe, this place truly feels like living inside a postcard. Nestled in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, Chamonix is an iconic, year-round mountain destination. It is located at the Haute-Savoie region, French Alps (near Swiss and Italian borders) Elevation at 1,035 meters, Surrounding Peaks: The Aiguilles de Chamonix mountain range, dominated by Mont Blanc (4,810m), the highest in Western Europe. Modern mountaineering began here when local residents Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard made the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786. In 1821, the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix was established, making it the oldest mountain guide organization globally. The town also famously hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. The pedestrian-friendly town center boasts cobblestone streets, traditional wooden chalets, luxury boutiques, and decadent Savoyard restaurants.

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) has been on my hiking bucket list for a long time, and this year, I finally made it happen. Trekking through France, Italy and Switzerland, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, alpine villages, valleys and breathtaking scenery, was truly an unforgettable experience. 🏔️🤍 Unfortunately, my TMB adventure didn’t go exactly as planned. Around the third day, I had to walk nearly 30 km in one day because I couldn’t find accommodation along the route. I had booked too late, and coincidentally, my trip overlapped with UTMB, so many of the accommodations were already fully booked. That long day eventually took a toll on my foot, and I decided to stop the trek early rather than risk making the injury worse. I was definitely disappointed that I couldn’t complete the entire loop this time. But even though I didn’t finish, the scenery I experienced along the way was absolutely incredible. Some views were so beautiful that I simply had to stop and take them in. ✨ 🥾 TMB Tips I Wish I Knew Before Going 1. BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION EARLY! 🏠 This is probably my biggest tip. Accommodation along the TMB can fill up quickly, especially during UTMB season. I booked too late and ended up having very limited options. 2. Don’t underestimate the distance. Try not to force yourself to cover huge distances just because you can’t find a place to stay. A 30 km day on a mountain trail can be very different from walking 30 km on flat ground. 3. Plan your stages before starting. Check the distance, elevation gain, available refuges/hotels and possible alternatives for each day. Having a backup option can make the trek much less stressful. 4. Listen to your body. The TMB is beautiful, but there’s no need to rush. If something starts hurting, slow down or stop. Finishing the trail is never more important than staying safe. For me, this trip became a reminder that sometimes the most memorable journeys don’t go exactly according to plan. I may not have completed the TMB this time, but I’ve already fallen in love with the mountains. Hopefully, I’ll be back one day — better prepared, with an earlier booking, and ready to complete the entire loop. 🥾🏔️🤍 📍 Tour du Mont Blanc — France 🇫🇷 | Italy 🇮🇹 | Switzerland 🇨🇭 🥾 Recommended for experienced hikers and mountain lovers 📅 Book accommodation early, especially around UTMB season! Not the ending I planned, but definitely not the end of my TMB story. 🤍 #travel2026 #travel #myitinerary

France Summer Style!

On the eve of this Christmas, I chose to spend it in the small town of Les Gets in France. This place is really super small, it may not take ten minutes to walk from the head of the town to the end, but when I took the cable car to the mountains, it was another breathtaking view. The ski resort here is connected with Mozines, so one ski ticket can slide two places. Because it was the first day of opening, and because of the foggy weather in the afternoon, we only slid Les Gets and felt very satisfied. Most of them here are skiing, but I think the slope is relatively friendly to single board, suitable for beginner and intermediate level snow friends. I found that children's skiing is very common here, all are groups of children in class, I heard that the school curriculum here includes skiing, really happy🍬 💰Full day cable car ticket: 35 euros (if you buy offline, it will be more expensive, it is best to ask the hotel owner if there is a ready-made snow card, you can directly recharge online) The fee includes all cable cars of Lesgets-Mozines two ski resorts, excluding equipment. 🏂Equipment rental: single board snowboard 23~25 euros a day, snow shoes 12 euros, helmet 8 euros (double board snow shoes + snowboard total 35~40 euros) 🚙Transportation: From Geneva Airport, it takes about 90 minutes to arrive by car. The bus company Alpsbus, you can buy tickets online in advance A small episode, I lost my insta camera early in the morning, in the afternoon I held a try and see attitude, sent a message to the local FB homepage to ask if anyone picked it up and returned it, I didn't expect someone to pick up the camera and return it to the visitor center! The hotel owner said this is too rare, it must not be picked up by the French🤣🤣🤣

#WinterTravel #FranceTravel #Evian #EuropeTravel ✔️ The town where Evian mineral water is available, Evian, France ✔️ If you have a Swiss Pass, the cruise is free! ✔️ Walking along Lake Roman in winter is full of romance :) ✔️ In the town of Evian, you can get Evian water for free!

I believe many people have heard of or have tasted evian mineral water, but not too many people have actually come to visit this small town of evian, which is in the French Alps region and has a population of about 2000, but this evian water company employs 900 people of evian town for its company employees. We take a boat from Lausanne, Switzerland to the French town of evian. The boat ride is about 30 minutes, with France 🇫🇷 on the bow and the Swiss flag on the stern. From the disembarkation walk over to the evian water fountain for about 20 minutes, passing by a locally relatively large commercial street, in the commercial street walk up to the fountain, do not hear the fountain to think really big, in fact, like tap water. Of course water flows out in an endless stream, which is said to flow here after a whole 15 years or more. Come to this birthplace must taste the local authentic ebian water, the water is rich in minerals, sweet and delicious, very sweet in the mouth. If you want to taste the can bring 1 water bottle over to fill to drink, do not put your mouth close, and do not waste nature provides hard-won water. After filling the water and drinking you can go back to the commercial street to enjoy the slow time. Maybe many people go out to travel just to see the flowers, do not feel the meaning of travel, but sometimes slowly walking on the street, experience the local customs, will really feel the joy of travel #France Travel

## When I traveled to Europe with my friends, it was also a pleasure for me to visit the local market. You can learn about the local people's food culture and life from the ingredients sold in the market. Some ingredients are no different from what we usually use, but some have never seen them before. Most of these markets are neat and tidy, and they are organized in an orderly manner.

Lake Annecy is located at the foot of the Alps and is known as the purest lake in Europe. The lake comes from the alpine snow and rain of the Alps, stretching for 15 kilometers, such as emerald blue and dazzling. Strolling along the shores of Lake Annecy, or swimming in the lake, overlooking the rolling Alps, is a great pleasure in life. Rousseau, the French enlightenment thinker, spent the most beautiful 12 years of his life in Annecy.

Annecy is the most beautiful town in the French Alps, known as the balcony of the Alps. The waters of Lake Annecy come from the snow and ice of the Alps and are considered to be the cleanest lakes in Europe. Even in the winter, the mountains of Annecy are green, the water is green, the landscape is natural, and life is laid back. The river from the western mountains passes through the entire old town and is injected into the Annecy Lake in front of the town hall. The main streets of the Old Town are on either side of the River, many of which were built between the 12th and 17th centuries and are well preserved. The ancient stone roads are still medieval, and most of them are opened as pedestrian streets.

Annecy, also translated as Annasi, is located 40 kilometers south of Geneva, Switzerland, and has been named "the ten most beautiful towns in Europe" for many times. If you come, you don't want to leave. In Annecy we experienced rain, yin and sunny days. In the morning, thick clouds shrouded Annecy, but near noon, it gradually spreads into the sky until clear skies. It must be said that Annecy is a need for sunshine. The town, with the sunshine, makes the town full of vigor.

I remember that when I first came out of social work, my cousin who studied in Europe and met a French boyfriend told me that the most beautiful place in France is Annecy. At that time, even France did not understand it. In the heart, only Stephen Chows filmmakers had a reversal of the Paris Tower, and what about Annecy? Not interested in! Then I accidentally traveled with my friend to Switzerland. I went out from Geneva, Switzerland in the early morning. I opened the map and saw a place called Annecy nearby. I was familiar with it, so I drove from Switzerland to France in 50 minutes. In the morning, the morning fog is not scattered. Annecy is surrounded by the Alps. The reflection of the snow-capped mountains surface on the clear Lake Annecy. The lakes and mountains are indeed a superb view. The lake water flows into the old town of Annecy, and a canal is built in the city. The colorful French fairy tale cabins on both sides of the river are filled with flowers. The locals sunbathe in the riverside cafes early in the morning. For such a beautiful view, no wonder Europeans will enjoy it.
