We arrived in Samarkand well past midnight. We hopped in a Yandex Taxi again and headed straight to the hotel. Hanifa Boutique Hotel was expecting us: they checked us in right away without any fuss, and we could finally catch our breath. Three nights cost us 15,221 rubles. The hotel is small and new, but it has a lot of soul. The decor features carved wood, the furniture showcases traditional motifs, and the courtyard has a soft tapchan (traditional daybed) where you just want to linger over a cup of tea. The breakfast area is decorated with vibrant paintings—you can instantly tell that every little detail has been carefully thought out. As is typical of Uzbek design, the room windows face the inner courtyard. This makes the rooms a bit dark, and they aren't exactly huge. However, this is more than made up for by the spotless cleanliness, a comfortable bed, soft bathrobes, slippers, and even heated floors in the bathroom♥️ Breakfast is served in individual portions but is incredibly generous. They set the table the moment we came down: one dish followed another so fast we didn't even have to wait. Fresh fruit, nuts, a pot of tea, and coffee—everything is perfectly planned. It’s the ideal start to the day before exploring Samarkand. The staff is incredibly helpful and welcoming. The location is another major bonus: the hotel is tucked away in a quiet alley, right next to the Registan. You step outside in the morning and you're instantly in the heart of the ancient city. There’s a huge selection of hotels in Samarkand, but we were absolutely thrilled with our choice. We highly recommend Hanifa Boutique!

After much research, I found that Happy Bird building in Samarkand has the best selection and the best price as well Happy Bird is a collection of artists who display and sell their artworks, you can find magnets, suzani embroidery, silver chasing plates, carpets, and the list goes on! I found these styles of magnet being sold in lots of places, but the details are not as sharp, or the painting is not done on wood but rather on cardboard instead. Other places quoted me 100-150k som for 1 small magnet, but this artist is selling for only 30-75k per piece depending on the size. After a bit of haggling, I managed to get 5 pieces for 200k, I was so happy! He even noticed a small scratch on one of the pieces and exchanged a better one for me 🥹 Then, he packaged each piece carefully before handing over, I can really feel that he's passionate and proud of his work. His shop is the first one on the right after entering Happy Bird, please come visit him and support local artists!

I arrived at Shah-i-Zinda at 7:00 AM, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day. The complex was incredibly peaceful, with only a handful of visitors. The soft morning sunlight made the turquoise mosaics glow in a way that felt almost unreal. I had seen hundreds of photos of Shah-i-Zinda before my trip, so I thought I knew exactly what to expect. But the moment I walked through the first archway, I literally froze for a few seconds. No photo had prepared me for how breathtaking it would be in person. The blue tiles shimmered under the Samarkand sun with a brilliance that no camera can truly capture. I spent nearly two hours wandering through the narrow pathways, admiring every mausoleum and taking countless photos. Even after all that time, I still felt like I hadn’t seen enough. Every corner revealed new patterns, intricate tilework, and different shades of blue that made each building unique. To be completely honest, I almost walked right past it at first. The exterior is quite modest, and from a distance, it doesn't really stand out as a remarkable building. Still, sensing there might be something more to it, I approached the outer fence. A guide then stepped out from inside and unlocked the door for me. The moment I stepped inside, my impression completely changed. Looking up, I saw a ceiling covered entirely in gold ornamentation. The delicate, intricate patterns overlap in endless layers, making you feel as though you've wandered into another world. Samarkand is renowned for its blue-tiled architecture, but what I found here was the beauty not of "blue," but of "gold." Since very few other tourists visit, I was able to take my time admiring the details in a serene, quiet space. It holds a tranquil charm quite distinct from the bustling glamor of the major tourist attractions. If you're wondering how much time to carve out for this trip, I'd highly recommend giving it at least 2 days and 1 night (2D1N). Every single sight here has the power to leave you completely breathless. Standing in front of buildings that tower dozens of times over us, we found ourselves constantly gazing upward, feeling incredibly small amidst the epic sweep of the Silk Road. At first glance, the Islamic architecture here might seem cut from the same cloth: soaring round domes, majestic symmetrical pillars, signature pointed archways (iwans), and a blanket of green and blue tiles. But the longer you look, the more magical it becomes. No two patterns are exactly alike; no two shades of blue are merely repeating each other. Every mosaic tile and every carved detail holds its own soul—a one-of-a-kind beauty quietly whispering the tales of a brilliantly golden era.

1️⃣ Do you need a passport and a visa? Passport — yes, you can't enter with a Russian internal ID. Visa — Russian citizens don't need one for trips up to 15 days. 2️⃣ What’s the currency and what should I bring to exchange? Currency — Uzbekistani som. We brought US dollars and exchanged them at official exchange offices. I don't recommend exchanging money on the street. 3️⃣ When is the best time to visit? We went in early May, and the weather was super comfortable. The best time to travel is spring (April–May) and fall (September–October). In the summer, temperatures can top 104°F (+40°C). 4️⃣ Can you travel there on your own? I’d say you absolutely should. At first, I looked into booking with a tour operator so I wouldn't have to stress about transfers, tickets, and lodging. But most of the tours I found looked less comfortable: no high-speed trains, barely any time to explore the cities, and a really packed itinerary. Plus, planning the trip independently actually turned out to be cheaper. 5️⃣ How do you get between cities? The Afrosiyob high-speed trains, without a doubt. You can easily buy tickets via the Uzrailway Tickets app. If you're paying with a foreign card, you’ll want to book well in advance—the best seats sell out fast. 6️⃣ How do you get around the cities? Yandex Taxi works there. I was able to link my UnionPay card and pay for rides right in the app. Speaking from personal experience, I recommend choosing at least the "Comfort" ride option. 7️⃣ Do Russian bank cards work? Most Russian cards don’t work. We used a Russian Agricultural Bank UnionPay card—it worked perfectly for shopping, taxis, and tickets. 8️⃣ Can you buy alcohol? Yep, alcohol is freely available. However, we were surprised to find that some stores only accept card payments for alcohol. So, it's a good idea to have a working bank card on hand just in case. 9️⃣ How many days do you need for the trip? Eight days were plenty for us to see three cities.
