The Godfather, Volcanic Terroir and Sicilian Cats: An Eastern Sicily Road Trip 🎬🌋
If Western Sicily is all about turquoise water and chaotic charm, Eastern Sicily feels like stepping onto a dramatic, high-budget movie set. To truly explore the landscapes between Taormina and Mt. Etna, renting a car is essential.
🚗 If you pick up a car at Catania Airport from major international agencies (like Sixt, Avis, or Hertz), a basic daily rate typically hovers around €40–€60. However, I strongly recommend upgrading to full, zero-deductible insurance—this brings the cost to about €80–€100 per day. Trust me: between the local driving style, narrow mountain roads, and the constant risk of parking scratches, full coverage is the only way to actually enjoy the trip stress-free.
Here is my personal itinerary for cinematic aesthetics and some unforgettable local flavors ⬇️
🎬 Savoca: Step Inside 'The Godfather'
Forget the crowded tourist traps. To see exactly where Francis Ford Coppola filmed his masterpiece, drive up to the quiet mountain village of Savoca.
🤌 The Vibe: Grab an espresso ☕ at the legendary Bar Vitelli (where Michael Corleone asked for Apollonia's hand in marriage), then slowly walk up the hill to Chiesa di San Nicolò 💒, the iconic church from the wedding scene. Besides, the panorama of the valley is breathtaking.
🤫 The Inside Scoop: You can actually sleep right above the movie set! The owners of the bar have transformed the upper floors of the historic 18th-century Palazzo Trimarchi (the exact building housing Bar Vitelli) into a boutique stay called 'Bar Vitelli Charming Suites'. It operates seasonally, and booking a room here is the ultimate hack to have the entire medieval village to yourself once the daytime tourist buses leave.
😺 Fun fact: the real 'mafia' in this village consists entirely of well-fed street cats guarding the parking lots and sunbathing on ancient stone walls.

🍷 The Volcanic Wine Experience
Growing grapes on the slopes of an active volcano creates a unique, mineral-rich terroir you won't find anywhere else. Premium tastings at local estates generally range from around €40 to €80 per person, and they are worth every cent. We visited two contrasting spots:
· Donnafugata (Vittoria region): This was pure culinary magic. The bold, structured wines were paired with dishes that blew my mind - especially tender veal cheeks slow-cooked in rich Modica chocolate, followed by a delicate panna cotta elevated by the salty, umami kick of tuna bottarga. It was a combination I never expected to love so much.
· Firriato Cavanera Etnea: Located much closer to the volcano’s slopes, this estate is all about the Etna terroir. Our 5-wine tasting felt like exploring the volcano itself - you can literally taste the ash and sharp acidity in the glass, perfectly balanced by a selection of sharp local cheeses and cured meats. An essential stop before hiking the black landscapes of Mt. Etna.

Famous Bar Vitelli in Sicily Italy
#bars
Fans of the Godfather will definitely remember this bar. It has been filmed here more than once. The real bar has more green decorations and basically remains the same. If you want to order food, you must choose DON VITO, that is, toast with eggplant and cheese. Then his smoothie is also very famous, ordering pistachio flavor, because the local pistachio in Sicily is also quite famous. After sitting in the bar for a while, you can go to the chapel where the second-generation godfather got married. It's very close.

Savoka town Sicily day tour
#100WaysOfTravel
Walking into the town of Savoka, it's like being in the scene of the classic movie The Godfather. Every street and every corner here retains the shadow of the movie.
Stop at Bar Vitelli, the Bar Vitelli in Barvitano, where Michael Corleone proposed to Apollonia. Along the narrow slate road, explore this historic town and feel the strong Italian flavor in the film. This is definitely a holy place for Godfather fans all over the world to worship. #outdooradventures #ancienttown
