I've already returned from Mauritania. I really wouldn't recommend going in July or August, because it's just...
Return advice for Mauritania❗️Don’t come in July or August or you’ll regret it😭
Just landed back from Mauritania!!
I was so excited for this off-the-beaten-path Sahara adventure in Africa
But Mauritania in July and August completely discouraged me!!
Honestly, I’m warning everyone who’s thinking about going
Don’t come in July or August!! The experience is terrible!!
After reading this real warning, don’t blindly follow the crowd and fall into traps🙏
Many people planning trips only know Mauritania as a hidden Sahara paradise
With the famous iron ore train, the deep blue Atlantic, and untouched desert villages
Great value, very few tourists, and an amazing atmosphere
But no one talks about the deadly downsides of the summer rainy season
I personally experienced all the pitfalls and will explain everything clearly!
🌡️Extreme heat and humidity make it impossible to go outside
July and August are the worst months of the year in Mauritania
High temperatures combined with rainy season humidity create a double whammy
It’s not dry desert heat, it’s suffocating sauna weather!
Daytime temperatures stay above 40℃ across the country
Inland desert areas can soar above 45℃
Even the coastal capital Nouakchott offers no relief, the sea breeze is scorching hot
The worst part is the soaring humidity!!
The usually dry desert suddenly becomes damp and sticky
Your body is always sweaty and sticky
Clothes cling to your skin, hair sticks to your scalp
After a few steps, you’re drenched in sweat, feeling dizzy and short of breath
No mood to explore, just want to stay in an air-conditioned room
You can’t stay outdoors for long
Hiking, desert visits, and beach photos are all limited
Even a little walking risks heatstroke or heat exhaustion
The whole experience is extremely uncomfortable and draining😵
🌧️Sudden heavy rains during the rainy season can ruin your plans
Many think desert countries don’t get rain
Big mistake! July and August are Mauritania’s short rainy season
Rainfall is heavy and unpredictable, with sudden downpours and thunderstorms
Especially in popular travel areas near the Senegal border, Adrar, and Tagant
Clear skies in the morning can turn into violent storms in the afternoon
Heavy short-term rainfall and poor drainage systems
This causes a series of travel disasters:
✅ Dirt roads and desert paths flood and become muddy, completely blocking roads
✅ Some low-lying roads and river crossings flood, making them impassable
✅ Remote attractions become inaccessible, travel times disrupted
✅ Driving or car hire risks double, with high chances of getting stuck or lost
Planned desert crossings, village visits, and grassland stops
Are very likely to be canceled due to sudden heavy rain
Trips become extremely unstable, with daily weather gambles
All your carefully made plans go to waste, and your mood crashes💔
🛣️Poor road conditions and utility outages ruin the travel experience
This is the biggest hidden trap for summer travel!
After heavy rains, Mauritania’s already rough roads become unusable
Outside cities, almost all roads are unpaved dirt tracks
After storms, potholes fill with water, mud makes roads slippery
Many popular off-the-beaten-path spots become unreachable
What should be a 2-hour drive can take twice as long with detours
Even worse is the infrastructure collapse
The rainy season often causes power outages, internet cuts, and water shortages
This is especially bad in remote areas!
No GPS signal, no mobile data, no way to pay
Frequent power outages at hotels and guesthouses, air conditioners and fans stop working
Hot nights with no relief, unreliable water for washing
Spotty communication makes emergency help difficult
Safety and comfort drop to zero🥲
🦟Mosquitoes and bugs everywhere + damp environment create health risks
Mauritania is almost mosquito-free in the dry season
But the rainy season in July and August changes everything!
Standing water everywhere, humid air
Breeds lots of mosquitoes, small flies, and other bugs
Mosquitoes are especially aggressive after dusk
Five minutes outside and you’re covered in bites, mosquito repellent barely helps
Combined with the hot, humid environment
Clothes and luggage easily get moldy and damp
Underwear never fully dries
Long outdoor trips often cause skin allergies and itching
Very unfriendly for those with sensitive skin!
❌Popular attractions fall short, you won’t see the best views
Who comes to Mauritania not to see the Sahara desert, Atlantic sunsets, migratory birds, and the famous train?
But July and August are a total letdown!
▪️Banc d'Arguin National Park: murky water during the rainy season, migratory birds haven’t arrived, no stunning flocks of birds
▪️Desert interior: extreme heat and changing weather, alternating sandstorms and showers, hazy views, all your photos turn out bad
▪️Iron ore train: unstable tracks during the rainy season, frequent cancellations and delays, hard to catch perfect train shots
▪️Coastal sunsets: mostly cloudy and rainy, very few clear sunsets, atmosphere greatly diminished
Simply put: the stunning sights of peak season are basically invisible in summer
After traveling thousands of miles, you only see a hazy desert and cloudy sea
Very poor value, not worth it at all!
✅Sincere advice: best time to visit (important)
Avoid the trap!! Stay away from the rainy summer months of July and August
🔸Best travel season: November to March
Comfortable temperatures year-round, 20–28℃ during the day, cool nights
No heavy rain, no extreme heat, very few mosquitoes
Stable roads, clear weather, all attractions open
The perfect time to see the desert, ocean, and ride the famous train
🔸Second best: April to May, October
Dry and cool weather, fewer tourists, great value
Rarely any extreme weather
📝Mauritania travel summary
Mauritania is truly beautiful
A very worthwhile off-the-beaten-path African destination
But choosing the wrong season means a wasted trip and suffering
Mauritania in July and August: extreme heat and humidity, frequent heavy rain, road collapses, terrible experience
Not suitable for sightseeing, photography, or deep travel
Not recommended for independent travelers or niche explorers!
