Getting There - Just an hours bus ride from Nanpu Bridge (Shanghai) and a further trip on a ferry will take you to Shengsi Islands. Attractions - There are several islands (you’ve probably heard of Gouqi abandoned fishing islands) but we visited the main island which boats a unesco world heritage scenic spots, not to mention beautiful beaches. Hotels - So many to choose. If you are a foreigner like me, most hotels will help you with the registration process. Food & Restaurants - If you like seafood this is the place for you!

Around 5 and half hours away from Shanghai (2 hours bus from Nanpu Bridge, 3 and half hours ferry), Gouqi Island is a laidback weekend getaway from the city. It is part of Shengsi Islands, in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. You can enjoy watching sunrise and sunset, stargazing, cycling, or simply enjoying a good meal. Mussles are quite good here. It is primarily a fishing island with the mussel farms as first business. DaWang Beach on the east of the island is one of the most popular. Muyu Bar is lively at night with live music performed. It can be found in the Daiwangcun area of Gouqi Island and it sits along the beach. During the daytime, waves can be heard crashing as coffee can be enjoyed on the beach front. It’s nicest to sit outside here. Staying on Gouqi Island is relaxing and quiet. Along the sea line there are a couple of cafes including Blue Cafe, located along the higher running street to overlook the beach area and fishing boats. Blue Cafe is also a hotel with rooms around 800RMB a night; it’s location on the island is classified as Daiwangcun (大王村) Prices for drinks are 25RMB upwards and there’s indoor and outdoor seating. #shengsiisland #gouqiisland #cafe #hotelstay

Since I had no plans for the weekend, I crossed the sea from Shanghai to a small island called Shengsi County. I had decided to take public transportation, so the one way trip took about five hours, taking the subway and then a boat. It probably would have been smoother if I'd been able to speak Chinese. I didn't do any research on hotel reservations, so I just randomly searched for one after arriving. I found a chic hotel with a temple-like atmosphere. The hotel owner doesn't speak English, so I managed to book using my broken Chinese and a translation app. It seems I was the first Japanese person there this year. Afterwards, I went out for seafood. I ordered seafood at a random restaurant. It was simply delicious. It was a relaxing weekend with no particular goal in mind.

Just a mere 20 or so years ago, this was a thriving seaside village bustling with life. Now reclaimed by Mother Nature, the houses sit enveloped by moss and vines, while time and weather have slowly eroded away the unkept buildings. #mytripvlog
