When it comes to in-depth travel in Kansai, aside from Kyoto and Osaka, don't miss the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture! This time, I embarked on a non-driving pilgrimage journey to Kumano Sanzan using public transportation—visiting the serene and spiritual towns of Nachikatsuura, Tanabe, and Shingu. Following the Kumano Kodo trail, I explored Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, complemented by the majestic Nachi Falls, Hiryu Shrine, Daimonzaka trail, and the healing beauty of Benten Island and the iconic three-story pagoda. This entire trip is filled with ancient Japanese mythology and natural energy. This non-driving route is highly recommended for those who enjoy in-depth travel and have a bit of stamina! Staying in Shingu for a day post Kumano Kodo trek. Walked to the Kamikura Shrine precinct and enjoyed the serene greenness of the area. The first run of stairs leading up the hillside to this shrine is the steepest and most daunting, but the views over the city are totally worth the 500+ stair climb to this pretty little shrine. Just take it slow and easy and you'll reach your reward. There's a windy dirt trail that bypasses these steep stairs and leads from a flat rest point at the midpoint of the climb down to the bottom. It looks to some folks like it might be easier to take than the stairs, but I think the many tree roots on this path actually make it more dangerous, particularly if there's been rain and the soil is slick. Our legs went straight to muscle memory and enjoyed climbing up the steep steps. Spectacular views across Shingu to the sea. A very enjoyable experience. #givethanks #givethanks

We'll also visit the Great Torii Gate of Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. The scenery at Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine is beautiful, and you can see waterfalls there. Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is also quite nice; you can walk around the Great Torii Gate. It's really large, and transportation is very convenient—you can get there by bus. Just check the bus schedules beforehand to make sure you can catch your bus!

The hardest accommodation to book on the Kumano Kodo Chuhbanro route! Without a doubt! I applied on the KUMANO website six months in advance ❌ and got cancelled over ten times, taking more than 30 days 🚌 To avoid the hassle of round-trip transportation [Idea], I finally set off two weeks earlier than planned. Kouguchi is located between two mountains, a midway point for the journey through the Daiun and Ooun areas ⛰️ Koguchi Nature House is one of only two accommodations in Koguchi 💤 It's said to be a converted elementary school 🏫 Whenever someone comes, the owner plays drums on the lawn for a "WELCOME" ceremony – a really high-energy check-in ceremony 🥁 There's an uphill path leading to a bridge, but I haven't explored it yet ❌ I took another path down to the river and soaked my feet with a 🇫🇷 girl. I initially thought it would be a dormitory-style bunk bed 🛏️ but upon check-in, I discovered it was a Japanese-style room ❤️ Since I was alone, I had the whole room to myself 🈳 Prepare 100 yen coins to start the air conditioning. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining hall according to your room number. Dinner is very plentiful with a variety of options. Breakfast is a buffet; help yourself to your liking. The packed lunch for the day is already prepared and placed on the table. Although, I was woken up at 6 am by the loudspeaker in my room announcing breakfast. I slept a little longer before getting out of bed. We were probably the second to last guest to leave.
