There are plenty of places for children to play, but except in winter, many couples and married couples stroll around alone, as various flowers such as tulips, sunflowers, and cosmos are in full bloom. Also, since it is a national park, the admission fee is cheap. I think it's a bargain at 450 yen for adults and free for junior high school students and younger. The Mossy Limestone Forest Walk is a 3 km (2-hour) trail along the Taishaku River—moss-covered limestone rocks and waterfalls. The moss here is so thick it covers the rocks, tree roots, and even the trail signs. I slipped on a mossy rock and caught myself on a limestone ledge. No permit, no fee for the trail. I bought a 500 JPY “Taishaku Gorge Nature Map” at the bus terminal (cash) and followed it. Carry 1.5 L water; fountains at the gorge entrance. IC cards work on trains; cash for the bus and map. Mistake: I wore sandals—the limestone is sharp, and the moss is slippery. Closed shoes mandatory. Kindness beat: a local hiker shared his wild persimmon and explained why the moss only grows on the north-facing limestone. “Kaze to kage ga kessei suru” (Wind and shade create it), he said (the same saying again—it’s a regional truth). The apple pie is very popular. It's made at the roadside station and sold fresh. I visited around 9:30 on a holiday, but the parking lot was full and the place was bustling with people. There were even tourist buses. The vegetables were reasonably priced. There were also items on display at the Expo (game?). There was also a roadside station stamp (with an apple design). #Spring0yentrip When I went to Bingo-Ochiai Station, I was impressed by the calm atmosphere of the old-fashioned station building. In front of the station, the scenery blended in with the surrounding nature, and time passed slowly. The station building was made of wood and had an old-fashioned appearance, and it had a nostalgic feel that reminded me of the Showa era. The rural scenery spreads around the station, and the idyllic atmosphere remained in my mind. In addition, the beautiful scenery of the mountains surrounding the station further enhanced the tranquility of the place. Even a station like this was once an important terminal station for connecting Yin and Yang, and more than 100 JNR employees worked there. At its peak, there were three night trains a day, which is hard to imagine now. Whenever you visit this station, a former JNR engineer will be giving a tour, so it might be a good idea to listen to his story.
