Shobara travel guide and discussion

This is a complex where you can experience a variety of things, including flower fields, large playground equipment such as slides, grass sledding, bicycle rentals, and camping. There are plenty of places for children to play, but except in winter, many couples and married couples stroll around alone, as various flowers such as tulips, sunflowers, and cosmos are in full bloom. Also, since it is a national park, the admission fee is cheap. I think it's a bargain at 450 yen for adults and free for junior high school students and younger. It is so large that it is impossible to see everything, so don't go there in sandals or high heels. In winter, the annual Christmas illuminations are held, which is also recommended.

#bucketlistdestinations Taishaku Gorge (帝釈峡) in Hiroshima Prefecture: I took the JR Hakubi line to Bitchu-Takahashi, then a rental car 40 min (¥5,000/day, ETC card). The gorge is free, 3 km limestone cliffs with moss on every ledge, the Taishaku-ko lake mirror-still. The “Onbashi” natural bridge is the highlight—moss over 10 m of rock arch. Mistake: I came in August noon—sun bakes the moss brown. April–May or October drizzle is the green window. A fisherman by the lake shared his ayu fish, “limestone holds water, moss holds the limestone together.” No permit, no gate. Toilet at the car park (¥100, coins). Card useless past the station. Is a gorge “discovered” when it’s on a prefecture brochure, or when the fog finds you alone?

#bucketlistdestinations Taishaku Gorge in Hiroshima Prefecture is a 18 km limestone gorge. I took the JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima, then a 1.5-hour bus (1,500 JPY, cash only) to Taishaku Gorge. The Mossy Limestone Forest Walk is a 3 km (2-hour) trail along the Taishaku River—moss-covered limestone rocks and waterfalls. The moss here is so thick it covers the rocks, tree roots, and even the trail signs. I slipped on a mossy rock and caught myself on a limestone ledge. No permit, no fee for the trail. I bought a 500 JPY “Taishaku Gorge Nature Map” at the bus terminal (cash) and followed it. Carry 1.5 L water; fountains at the gorge entrance. IC cards work on trains; cash for the bus and map. Mistake: I wore sandals—the limestone is sharp, and the moss is slippery. Closed shoes mandatory. Kindness beat: a local hiker shared his wild persimmon and explained why the moss only grows on the north-facing limestone. “Kaze to kage ga kessei suru” (Wind and shade create it), he said (the same saying again—it’s a regional truth). If a gorge is made of limestone, does the moss make it softer or stronger?

Ueno Park (Shobara City, Hiroshima Prefecture) is a famous cherry blossom spot in the Chugoku region of Japan, quietly watching over this land since the early Edo period. ❄️ Winter Wonderland at Kenmin no Mori: Escape the hustle and dive into a peaceful, snowy retreat just outside Shobara! The forest transforms into a sparkling ice kingdom, with quiet paths winding beneath snow-laden trees, perfect for lovers of outdoor natural scenery and moody winter skies. 🌲☁️ 🧭 Recommended Route: Start early to catch the serene morning atmosphere—walk the main loop trail from the visitor center and let the snowy branches guide your way. Pause for close-ups of frosted tree bark and twinkling icicles, then head to the lookout spots for a panoramic view of the forest rolling under a cloudy sky. 🛷 Must-Do Experiences: Bundle up and try a mini snow hike or chill on a bench to soak up the hush. Kenmin no Mori is a hotspot for peaceful strolls, icy tree photography, and breathing in fresh, crisp mountain air. Snap up-close shots of the intricate ice patterns and take wide angles of snowy trails winding into the mist—truly nature’s vision in winter! 📸 Insta-Worthy Spots: Go off-trail for shots of untouched snow, or frame the gloomy sky above leaning branches for maximum “winter escape” vibes. The best light is before noon, when the grey clouds make the landscape pop under a soft, diffused glow. 💡 Visiting Tips: Wear proper boots (paths get slippery!) and layer up—the wind chill is real, even if it rains. Pack snacks and a thermos of something hot, since convenience stores are far and the forest can feel miles from civilization. Check the local forecast before heading out; sudden snow or rain is common in winter! ⚠️ Key Precautions: Paths are icy and signage limited—bring a paper map. Always let someone know your route if venturing deeper on foot. I was there last week and the place is amazing, less crowd and very productive time there! #Shobara #KenminNoMori #WinterEscape #SnowAdventures #NatureVision

Explored the winter magic of Shobara 🌲❄️—the Kenmin-no-mori Ski Area is the spot for snowy trails, tree-lined runs, and all the ice-and-snow vibes you can ask for! Whether you’re a ski newbie or just want to hit the slides, this place is perfect for a laid-back snow escape. Top Spot to Visit: Kenmin-no-mori Ski Area Address: 156-14 Saijocho Yuki, Shobara, Hiroshima 729-5602, Japan Opening Hours: 08:30–17:00 (year-round) My quick tip: Self-driving here is super convenient—parking is hassle-free and you get total freedom to come and go as you please. Pack snacks and water for the day; there aren’t many food options nearby, but the natural scenery will make you forget you’re missing any luxuries! Pro traveler tip: Don’t miss the slide slope if you’re visiting with friends or family—it’s the fastest fun in the field and perfect for all ages. Getting Around: Driving is king for this region! Roads are usually clear (except after heavy snow), and the trip up is peaceful, with close-up views of all kinds of trees—great for nature photos. Food Recs: Bring a packed lunch or snacks; the ski area is remote, so you’ll want food on hand while you enjoy the fresh air. Essential Tips: Dress warm (layers!) and get there early for quieter slopes and the freshest snow. No special visa/ticket needed if already in Japan, and bring cash for any local purchases since cards aren’t always accepted. #ShobaraSnow #JapanNature #SkiTrip #WinterFun #TravelTips

The apple pie is very popular. It's made at the roadside station and sold fresh. I visited around 9:30 on a holiday, but the parking lot was full and the place was bustling with people. There were even tourist buses. The vegetables were reasonably priced. There were also items on display at the Expo (game?). There was also a roadside station stamp (with an apple design). There were also plenty of restrooms. They also sold konjac, and the konjac from the stall was delicious. #HiroshimaApples

To get to Mt. Ashitake, in the case of public transportation, get off at JR Shohara Station, take the bus bound for "Honmura Daijingu" from there, and get off at the last stop "Honmura". Or take a taxi from JR Shobara Station. In the case of a car, it is common to take National Route 183 from "Kawachi IC" or "Hongo IC" on the Sanyo Expressway, head towards Shobara City, and follow the instructions of "Mt. Ashitake" on site. Ashitakeyama is a mountain located in Honmura-cho, in the eastern part of Shohara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. 815 metres above sea level. It is known as the "Japanese Pyramid" because of the traces of rocks that seem to have been artificially stacked from the mid-abdom to the vicinity of the top of the mountain, and it has been said to be the mausoleum of Emperor Jinmu in the local area for a long time. #hiking

#Spring0yenTrip The JR Geibi Line stretches 159.1km from Hiroshima Station to Bitchu-Kamishiro Station in the north of Okayama Prefecture. While it is used by many people for commuting to work or school in the outskirts of Hiroshima, it is also a famous local line for train enthusiasts, with some sections having the lowest usage in Japan in some years. Between Hiroshima and Miyoshi, diesel railcars from the days of the national railway are in use, with about one train per hour. With seasonal scenery unfolding from the train windows, it is used as a means of transportation between Hiroshima and the north of the prefecture, but in recent years the number of passengers has dropped significantly. There are only about five people on board trains with two or three cars at any given time. I wish there were more people on the line!!! (From a resident along the line)

#Spring0yenTrip On the day I visited Taishaku Gorge in winter, the sky was cloudy, and the whole area was very quiet and had a fantastic atmosphere. The silhouettes of the trees without leaves and the sound of the river flowing in the cold air were soothing, and it felt as if time had stopped. The famous Obashi Bridge had an even more solemn atmosphere under the cold winter and cloudy sky, and I felt the strength and mystery of nature once again. The charm of winter is that there are few people and you can enjoy the scenery in silence. The colors are subdued, but the transparency of the air and the details of the nature stand out, and Taishaku Gorge in winter was also exceptionally beautiful. It was cold, but it was a wonderful time that cleansed my soul. #TaishakuGorgeinWinter #MysteryofObashiBridge #SilentValley #BeautifulEvenOnCloudyDays #NatureofHiroshima

#Spring0yentrip When I went to Bingo-Ochiai Station, I was impressed by the calm atmosphere of the old-fashioned station building. In front of the station, the scenery blended in with the surrounding nature, and time passed slowly. The station building was made of wood and had an old-fashioned appearance, and it had a nostalgic feel that reminded me of the Showa era. The rural scenery spreads around the station, and the idyllic atmosphere remained in my mind. In addition, the beautiful scenery of the mountains surrounding the station further enhanced the tranquility of the place. Even a station like this was once an important terminal station for connecting Yin and Yang, and more than 100 JNR employees worked there. At its peak, there were three night trains a day, which is hard to imagine now. Whenever you visit this station, a former JNR engineer will be giving a tour, so it might be a good idea to listen to his story.

#cherryblossom2024 Deep gorges and wide open spaces The Bihoku area in Hiroshima Prefecture is a great place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails here take you through two magnificent gorges, Sandan-ke and Taisaku-ke, with dense forests and hot springs such as Takamiya Yunomori. It is interesting There are about 70 types of flowers in Bihoku Hills Park Sandan-ke and Taisaku-ke are considered two of the most picturesque gorges in Japan How to get there The best way to get to Bihoku is by car from Hiroshima — it will take two hours. The nearest transport interchange is Shobara IC on the Chugoku Expressway. Some of the attractions in the area — for example, Sandan-ke — can be reached by public transport. Flowers and sports in the national Park Bihoku Hills National Park will appeal to both fans of watching blooms and fans of outdoor sports. The park itself is divided into several sections, one of which is called the "Flower Square". Indeed, from spring to autumn, about 70 types of flowers bloom there. In Minori no Sato, more active tourists will enjoy a bicycle trail with a length of almost 7 km, as well as a disc golf course. Tsudoi no Sato is for playing golf and admiring sakura in the spring. And the open space of eight hectares, which is called the "Big Lawn", is great for relaxing in warm weather. Go through the gorge The Sandan-ke runs through the mountains northwest of Hiroshima. Impressive waterfalls and crevices can be found here. This place is just created for those who like to climb rocks through greenery. You can get to the Sandan-ke Gorge by public transport from Hiroshima. In Taisaku-kyo, it is worth getting to the stone arch of natural origin, known as the "Onbashi Bridge". The gorge itself is named after the god Taisaku-ten, and there is a temple dedicated to this deity — Aime-ji. There is a comfortable path from the temple gate along the northern part of the gorge.

#cherryblossom2024 Fireworks, homemade boat races and a training center for professional runners Ueno Park is an extensive green area for recreation, picnics and sports. There is a sports center on site where you can train for a modest fee. It is interesting The small red gate of the temple at Ueno Pond seems to grow out of the water — this is a reference to the floating gate of the Itsukushima Temple The sports center has running tracks for 100 and 350 meters Sakura blossoms in the park in spring How to get there The park is located very close to Bingo Shobara station. There is parking for visitors in cars. Ueno Pond The park is best known for Ueno Pond, surrounded by sakura trees. In spring, during flowering, they are illuminated with paper lanterns. A small sanctuary on the shore of the pond is also illuminated and decorates the evening landscape. Summer entertainment In summer, two spectacular events take place in the park. During the fireworks festival, you can admire how they are beautifully reflected in the water. A race on homemade boats is held between local teams, who first have to build a boat "from scratch". During the race, the teams swim across the pond, trying to overtake each other. A variety of boats are involved: from simple rafts to complex structures decorated with images of famous characters.

Commonly known as Bihoku Illuminations, this is an annual event. Viewing the illuminations is free, just pay the regular admission fee. We recommend going in the afternoon, strolling around the park, and then viewing the illuminations at night. Usually, when viewing illuminations, the parking lot and the site are very crowded, but this park is located in a large rural area, so there is no need to worry about traffic jams or crowds. This means that even families can visit at their own pace without worry. The familiar illuminations are updated every year with new additions, making it a little more powerful.

I went to Bihoku Hillside Park in Hiroshima Prefecture!!! This is a national park that is well maintained and very beautiful😊 I was able to refresh myself surrounded by nature✨ #besttrip2023

During this season, you can see hydrangeas here and there while strolling through Ueno Park (although I say here and there, I mean mainly around Shinobazu Pond). There were many hydrangeas that were in full bloom, so I really enjoyed it. #hydrangea #QuintessaCampaign

I went for a walk to enjoy the hydrangeas in Ueno Park. At this time of year, the beautiful and colorful hydrangeas bloom on both sides of the roads in Ueno Park, especially near Shinobazu Pond. It's a shame that these beautiful flowers can only be seen for a short period of time. #hydrangea #QuintessaCampaign
