But cities like Budapest, Skopje, Belgrade, Warsaw, Sarajevo, Tirana, and Bucharest can cost €25–€40 a day if you travel smart. Accommodation is cheaper, food is cheaper, and many attractions cost much less. Hostels can be €10–€20, local meals are only a few euros, and there are plenty of free or cheap things to do. One reason these cities are cheaper is because average salaries are lower in these countries, so the cost of living is lower overall. That’s the reality behind the lower prices. Europe has a reputation for being expensive, but honestly, that really depends on where you go. Some of my favorite trips have been in countries where I didn’t have to constantly think about how much I was spending. Here are three affordable European countries that I think are genuinely worth visiting. 1. Albania Albania surprised me more than I expected. Before going, I mostly knew it for its beaches, but there’s so much more to see. Tirana is colorful and full of energy, while places like Berat and Gjirokastër feel completely different, with old stone streets and beautiful historic buildings. But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. From the hilltop, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Skopje's unique cityscape and take in the amazing scenery with a nice breeze. Best of all, it's completely free to enter, making it a great place to drop by! ◎ 🧭 Heads up! The Google Maps entrance detour If you follow Google Maps to get here, the entrance can be really confusing—I ended up taking a detour myself...! The smoothest route is to head through the Old Bazaar (old town) and walk up the hill. · Shortcut tip: You can get up there in no time if you enter from the parking area for large tour buses or take the stairs along the road. I took the stairs on my way back and found it to be much closer. ⏱️ A quick 30-minute visit is all you need The grounds are pretty compact and easy to explore, so you only need about 30 minutes to fully enjoy it (or even less if you're just there for the view!). Few European capitals combine so many different architectural styles and cultures in one place. Crossing the iconic Stone Bridge, I moved from the lively Old Bazaar—with its Ottoman streets, mosques, and traditional cafés—to a city center filled with grand monuments, modern buildings, and impressive public squares. The contrast is striking, yet it gives Skopje a character that's completely its own. For the best views, head up to Kale Fortress overlooking the city. As the sun sets, the skyline, surrounding mountains, and the Vardar River create one of the best panoramas in North Macedonia. If you have time, ride the cable car to Mount Vodno and visit the Millennium Cross for an even wider view. Many travelers use Skopje as a quick stop before heading to Ohrid or neighboring countries.
