2026 Ternate Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

One of my favorite moments in Ternate was watching the sunset at Tolire Beach. It’s located on the western side of the island, about 45 minutes from the city center, and the drive itself is already beautiful with views of the sea and the silhouette of Mount Gamalama along the way. I arrived a bit before sunset, and the colors slowly changed in a way I didn’t expect. It started with a soft orange glow, then became deeper and more vibrant as the sun went down. Just before it got dark, the sky shifted into a mix of orange and purple tones, which made the whole view feel even more special. The atmosphere here is very relaxed. I didn’t expect much when I went to Ternate, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable places I’ve been to. What makes Ternate special is how compact everything is. It’s a small island, but right in the center stands Mount Gamalama, which gives the whole island a very unique landscape. Wherever you go, you’re always surrounded by a mix of mountain and sea views. The water here is incredibly clear, and many spots around the island still feel untouched. I spent most of my time just moving around the island and stopping whenever I saw a nice view, there are plenty of those. But the highlight for me was the sunset. As the sun goes down, the sky slowly changes color over the ocean, with nearby islands in the distance. It felt very calm and not crowded at all, which made the experience even better. 💡 From my experience: · Renting a motorbike is the easiest way to explore the island · The full loop around Ternate only takes around 1–2 hours · Sunset spots are everywhere, but the west side of the island gives the best view · Try to go in the late afternoon so you can enjoy both daylight views and sunset Ternate might not be as well-known as other destinations in Indonesia, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It still feels quiet, natural, and less developed compared to more popular places. During my exploration in Ternate, I accidentally saw an interesting traditional restaurant. My curiosity leads me to stop by this restaurant and have my lunch here. The view was so amazing and we would eat inside the floating boat whoch makes it interesting and memorable. The lake water is so calm and the air is so fresh. The most interesting part is, you do your own fishing, and if you get one, you can eat the fish you got. OMG i highly recommend you guys if you happened to visit Ternate. I based in Weda (losmen 150k IDR), chartered a longtail 07:00, landed the mangrove-mouth, walked the ridge behind. The moss on the 1990s copra-drier post was black-green with crab-scatter, ate a 25k IDR pisang goreng, watched a white cockatoo work the mangrove fringe at 08:30. Mistake: I wore trainers in Aug — mangrove mud sucked one off at the knee, leeches in the brackish transition; rubber boots, the mossy ridge is 200 m behind the mangrove not in it. Another: nickel trucks use the Weda road dawn–dusk, don't hitch unknown pickups. Would you charter 200k IDR + 50k chief-gift for the Weda mangrove→ridge mossy forest walk, or skip Weda and do the Sofifi–Jailolo north-Halmahera clove road instead?

If you happen to have plans to travel to Ternate Island, North Maluku, Indonesia here are 3 places i recommended to visit! Jikomalamo Beach. Clean beaches with unspoiled coral reefs, lots of colorful fish. A great place for snorkeling and diving. The water is very clear. The boat that was leaning on the pier just looked like it was floating because the water was so clear. Hol Sulamadaha. The place is quiet, with very beautiful combination of island, mountain and sea views. You can snorkel, play boats, relax sitting on a buoy, or just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while enjoying hot boiled noodles. Tolire Lake. A brilliantly volcanic lake, Tolire Lake is set in a crater at the foot of Mount Gamalama.
