🇵🇹 The Fantastic World of Portuguese Can
We chanced upon an interesting shop, The Fantastic World of Portuguese Can, while taking a stroll along the riverfront promenade by the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia. The moment we set foot in the shop, the vibrant interior made us feel like we were in a circus! Countless colourful cans of sardines stacked from floor to ceiling is definitely a sight to behold. The main highlight of the shop is ''timeless sardines collection'' in which a year together with important event that happened in that year is printed on the tin. The collection contains every year from 1916 to the present year. The Fantastic World of Portuguese Can has a few branches across Portugal.

🇵🇹 Crossing Luís I Bridge
Located at the mouth of Douro River, Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, is one of my favourite cities in the world. The Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte de Dom Luís I) is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. It is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old City Porto. A visit to Porto is not complete without crossing this beautiful bridge on foot. In fact, I crossed it multiples during my stay in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Completed in 1886, the bridge's 172 metres span was then the longest of its type in the world. The lower deck is currently open to public transport, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians. It is accessible from Av. de Diogo Leite (Vila Nova de Gaia side) and Cais da Ribeira (Porto side). The upper deck has a length of 385 meters and is more than 10 floors above the lower deck. It is used for the Porto metro and also has a pedestrian walkway that offers an spectacular view of the Douro River and the buildings on both sides of the river banks. The upper deck is accessible from Jardim do Morro (Vila Nova de Gaia side) and Av. Vimara Peres (Porto side, near to Porto Cathedral).

🇵🇹 Lovely Italian Restaurant in Gaia
During our stay in Vila Nova de Gaia, we found an amazing Italian restaurant in the hub of port wine to satisfy our carvings for pizzas and pastas. Mamma Bella Cais de Gaia is a hidden gem located a short walk away from the Douro River Front. The beautifully decorated restaurant has both indoors and outdoors seating. The pizzas and pastas we ordered were freshly prepared and the cook was really generous with ingredients. All the dishes came with complimentary garlic bread. Each main dish costs around 10 euros. We also loved the homemade sangria with port wine and even ordered two jugs!

🇵🇹 Authentic Portuguese Food @ Gaia
#2024wish
We had a hearty lunch in a family run Portuguese restaurant after the train ride from Lisbon to Porto. The restaurant, Frango Sobre Rodas, is located just outside Vila Nova de Gaia train station. This humble little restaurant serves generous serving of traditional Portuguese dishes at very affordable prices. Most of the dishes are under 10 euros. Apparently this neighbourhood restaurant is quite popular among the locals. The main highlight of the food we ordered is francesinha, a Portuguese sandwich originated from Porto, which consists of toasted bread covered in rich sauce made from tomato and beer. The service staff was attentive and tried her best to introduce the dishes in English. 👍

🇵🇹 Riding the Gaia Cable Car @ Porto
#wheretogo
What better way to admire the beauty of the city of Porto, a UNESCO world heritage site, than overlooking the city from a cable car? Operating since 2011, the Gaia cable car connects the upper deck of the Luís I Bridge (next to Jardim do Morro metro) and Cais de Gaia (next to the Cais de Gaia Municipal Market). The route is 600 metres long and the difference in elevation between the two terminals is 58.5 metres. The 5-minute ride offers spectacular views of the mouth of Douro River, historic centre of Porto on one side and Gaia port wine cellars on the other side of the river bank.

If you are a port wine lover this is one of the best place to stay in Porto. The hotel is located in the heart of the Port Wine Caves in the Vila Nova de Gaia, surrounded by wine cellars which offer wine tastings. It is also a stone throw away from the Douro River Front where you can get amazing views of Porto and the iconic Luis I Bridge. The bridge is within walking distance, but be prepared to climb a lot of stairs and slopes in order to reach it.

🇵🇹 Glasshouse Restaurant by Douro River
We had a wonderful dinner at Ar de Rio, a terrace bar restaurant in a glasshouse by the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. The restaurant has both indoors and outdoors seating and offers amazing views of Ribeira, Porto old town. The restaurant specialises in western food, offering mainly steaks and francesinha, a Portuguese sandwich originated from Porto. We ordered grilled fish instead as we preferred seafood. The main dishes came with salad and either rice or potatoes. The food was palatable and reasonably priced too.

🇵🇹 Wine Tasting in Quevedo Lodge @ Gaia
We received complimentary wine tasting from purchasing the Gaia cable car round trip tickets. Quevedo Lodge is a wine tasting room located a short walk away from Cais de Gaia cable car station at Douro River Front. The Quevedo is a family owned winery that has been producing port wines and Douro wines since 1993. We happened to visit the wine tasting room on a Wednesday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised to catch a live fado session. Fado is a type of Portuguese singing renowned for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character. There are regular live fado sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 pm to 5 pm. We tried both the red and white port wines and ordered some snacks to go with wine.

🇵🇹 Fresh Seafood in Vila Nova de Gaia
We had a satisfying seafood meal in Armazém do Peixe on our last day in Porto. Located in Afurada, a fishing village just across Porto, this elegant restaurant was converted from the ruins of an old fishing net warehouse in 2017. The moment we stepped foot in the restaurant, we noticed it was large, airy and full of natural light. The restaurant specialises in preparing fresh seafood while preserving its natural flavours. We ordered Portuguese seafood rice, grilled fish, scallops together with sangria. The seafood was indeed fresh and delectable. The waitress was attentive and even helped us to debone the fish.
