Chaoshan is not a city.
I’ve always thought Chaoshan was a city and only learned that it’s a region composed of 3 main cities when planning to explore it. The 3 are namely Jieyang 揭阳, Shantou 汕头and Chaozhou 潮州。
Definitely a foodie’s paradise. It’s cheap, varied and delicious. It has something for everyone - fresh seafood being a coastal region, excellent meat - think Chaoshan beef hotpots and tasty fresh veggies. A lot of focus on the produce quality.
I split my trip between Chaozhou and Shantou. If you are short on time, I’d advise to only go to Shantou.
If you have time, do both. Go to Chaozhou mostly for food, history, tradition architecture and cute alleyways. Go to Shantou for history and culture as well but with more youth energy, trendy cafes, food fusions and it just has more to do. Also consider Nan’ao island which is close to Shantou.
I flew from Shanghai to the Chaoshan regional airport which is close to Jieyang. Took didis to travel between Chaozhou and Shantou - Driving is the most convenient to move between the 3. Then took a public bus to go to Nan’ao.
Photos above are a mix of Shantou and Chaozhou. I personally really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the area.

Wandering the streets of the old town in Chaozhou is like traveling back into time: endless lanes for exploring, traditional crafts and decorations everywhere, delicious dishes to keep you satiated, and of course an amazing tea culture! it even better during festivals, when you can see amazing lantern displays! Bring your cameras and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of Chaoshan culture #urbanexplorer #teaculture #tea #chaozhou #chaoshan #newyearadventure #china #lanternfestival
Gorgeous 12th century bridge
When visiting the old Town of Chaozhou is a good idea to be at this old bridge during sunset because in my opinion is when it looks the prettiest
There is a small fee to get into the bridge and see the boats closer, the interesting thing is that the bridge isn't compete by itself but made up by the smaller boats that arrived there, a very innovative way to collect the goods from other towns.
Which is your favorite picture?

Great Rooftop Café in Chaozhou's Oldtown
Chaozhou is a great holiday choice for Guangdong province. The city is divided in a new part and an old part. The Café "Titalk Café" is in the old part.
📍 Titalk Café, Zao Alley 19 (灶巷19号), Chaozhou.
Their speciality is the vanilla ice cream cofe. It's milk coffee with two cops of vanilla ice cream on top. ☕ 🍦 So tasty! They also have some cake and service is very nice and friendly.
You can sit inside or on the rooftop, where you have a nice view around the old town area. I stayed in Chaozhou for three nights and I went to the Café every day!

Romantic Chaozhou 潮州
Chaozhou city is located in Guangdong, in the Chashan area. It is a pleasant blend of ancient and modern China that’s still largely undiscovered by foreign tourists. However, if you are the adventurous kind, a weekend stay in Chaozhou might just be the thing for you. The old town will surprise you with its endless sights, smells and flavours and at night the lights make the streets and buildings look like they are from a Disney movie.
Getting There - from Chaoshan Train station take a taxi or Didi.
Attractions - Old town, city wall, Song Dynasty stone bridge
Food & Restaurants - There are tons of places to eat, and the food within the old town area is quite good.#history #food #adventure #guangdong #chaozhou #ancientlandmark
Chaozhou (Teochew) is an excellent place to spend a weekend.
The most famous sight in Chaozhou is the Guangji Bridge 广济桥, partly consisting of stone towers with a pontoon section in the middle that can be opened by moving the wooden boats. The extant bridge is a modern reconstruction of the ancient original, but it looks convincing. It's a little bit dear to cross, but the ticket itself is a postage-paid postcard.
The old city of Chaozhou retains its ancient wall on the river side, which makes a nice spot for a stroll.
Visit the picturesque West Lake, 西湖, and then walk along Zhongshan Road towards the river to see many workshops where the traditional art of Chaozhou woodcarving is still practised. The temples and ancestral halls in the old town are richly decorated with such carving.
Finally, stroll along the century-old main street marked by dozens of memorial arches and try some tasty street food or buy some locally made satay sauce to take home.
Several trains a day go from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Chaoshan Station, from where you can get a bus to Chaozhou itself. Chaozhou is not very big, so you can easily visit it and neighbouring Shantou (Swatow) in a weekend.

THE BEST CONGEE IN THE WORLD
The food in Chaoshan is the best in the world. The only thing that is better is my wife who is from Shantou.
my recommendation is to come to Chaoshan, eat lots of food and before the yummy food makes you too fat marry a Chaoshan girl and make lots of babies to keep her parents happy.
This is my suggestion to a happy life!
You can trust me. 🤪

Lights, Camera, Action - Chaozhou Light Show
Chaozhou is a historical Guangdong city in the north east of the province near Shantou. There is an old saying “If you haven’t been to Chaozhou, you haven’t really been to Guangdong”.
It’s also a foodies heaven! But more about another day!
The Guangji bridge is one of China’s most greatest creations in bridge history. The middle part of the bridge is made of 18 parallel pontoon boats.
During the day you can walk along the bridge to the other side - as long as no boats are coming through, when you will see them takeaway the boats in the middle to let big boats through!
✨At nighttime, the Guangxi bridge is also home to mysterious light show - usually at 8pm and 9pm.
If you go to Chaozhou, it’s definitely worth staying overnight to enjoy the light show as well as the extensive food and tea culture - which all come out at night!
📍Guangji bridge is located at the Han riverside
💰 it’s free to watch the light show (To go on the bridge during the day is around 20-30rmb depending on ticket type)
