Winter Hiking Experience The bus stopped at Chusha, and the dozens of steps were all covered in ice. I quickly put on my crampons and carefully climbed up to the Chusha platform. I bought an omamori (protective charm) at Chusha, took a short break, and hurriedly set off on the mountain trail towards Okusha. The trail from Chusha to Okusha wasn’t particularly exciting. Seeing the teahouse in front of the Okusha torii gate, I knew the cedar tree path was not far away. After arriving at the Suwamon gate, I entered the most scenic section. Tall cedar trees stood on both sides, making people feel very small among them. The boardwalk section at the entrance of Kumano Kodo gave the same feeling. Japan’s ancient temple paths truly feel timeless at a glance. In winter, heavy snow covers everything, obscuring the mountain outlines, but the spiritual atmosphere is very strong. The giant cedars couldn’t bear the continuous snowfall, and large chunks of snow suddenly fell from above. The force of gravity combined with the cold wind made those hit feel like they were caught in a blizzard. Fortunately, I had taken an umbrella from the hotel, which could be used as a walking stick and to shield against sudden snowfalls. The route’s endpoint was the high-altitude Okusha. The snow here was so deep and thick that the steps were completely invisible; I could only climb along the narrow path made by previous hikers. The crampons I bought for a few dollars on TB came in very handy. Upon reaching the endpoint, the lively music abruptly stopped. After a short rest, I returned the same way. The return trip was faster than the way there. I missed the entrance to the walking trail in front of the teahouse and ended up taking the road back to Chusha in one go.

I've dined here before, but since the reopening, the seating area is much more spacious, steps have been removed, and it's now completely accessible. If you're planning to visit the Kumano Sanzan and aren't driving, be prepared for at least a two-day, one-night trip. I was in the same boat. I started my journey at Hineno Station and caught the first Kuroshio Limited Express, arriving in Shingu City right at noon. Since I was carrying luggage, I had to head straight to the Shingu City Tourism Association outside the station to drop off my bags. Conveniently, the bus stop for Hongu Taisha is right there, so I was able to hop on the bus immediately after storing my luggage. The bus ride from Shingu City to Hongu Taisha takes about an hour, and the scenery along the way is quite lovely. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and soak in the tranquility of nature, you'll absolutely love it here. Since I visited on a weekday, there were very few tourists, making it incredibly peaceful and relaxing. There are generally two ways to get to Shingu City: The first is via the Kuroshio Limited Express, coming from the Osaka or Wakayama area. The second is via the Nanki Limited Express, coming from the Nagoya or Ise area. I highly recommend purchasing a JR Pass, as it can save you a ton on transportation costs and really pay for itself. This guest house is a traditional Japanese-style old house, meticulously cleaned and warmly maintained by the host. Upon arrival, the host personally guided us through the use of all the appliances and facilities in the house. Despite the cold weather, various heating equipment was provided, ensuring a warm and comfortable stay. The rooms feature tatami mats and futons that are very cozy, and even a heated table, which the kids referred to as "Doraemon's warm table." The beds are equipped with electric blankets, and the kitchen is fully stocked with utensils and appliances such as a refrigerator, gas stove, induction cooker, microwave, electric kettle, rice cooker, coffee maker, toaster, and more. This makes it very convenient for guests to cook their own meals using ingredients purchased locally. The house and its surroundings are incredibly comfortable. Additionally, a washing machine and dryer are available, along with detergent for guests to use freely. The only downside is that the bathroom, typical of old Japanese houses, is located a bit far from the rooms, at the opposite end of the house. The path to the bathroom lacks heating, making it slightly chilly, but the bathroom itself is equipped with a small electric heater. This guest house truly feels like home. After checking in during the afternoon, Grandpa took a nap, the women chatted around the heated table, and the kids explored how to play shogi on the porch outside. In the small courtyard, the host provided bird feed (actually sunflower seeds) in bowls placed on trees, attracting birds to come and eat. This peaceful countryside lifestyle was truly enjoyable, offering a genuine experience of staying in rural Japan. The host also provided discount coupons for nearby hot springs and recommended places to visit. Although the host only speaks basic English, communication through simple signs and gestures worked perfectly. After soaking in the hot springs, the host even prepared flashlights for us as the streetlights in the dark alleys were not very bright.
