#summerbeachnights In Turkey, we had a room with a beautiful sea view, and it was absolutely magical. During the day, we could admire the sea from our balcony, and in the evening, we would go down to the beach to see how different it looked at night. The warm sand beneath our feet, the gentle sound of the waves, the sea breeze and the quietness all around. And above the sea, there was a huge full moon 🌕, creating a long silver path of light across the water. We sat on the beach and simply watched the shimmering sea. It felt as if time had stopped and there was nothing around us except the sea, the moon and the warm summer night. 🏛️ Dolmabahçe is one of Istanbul's most lavish palaces, perched on the banks of the Bosphorus and serving as the former residence of Ottoman sultans. We visited to admire the famous interiors, crystal, and gold—and were immediately met with a massive queue. 🏛️ When we arrived, the line stretched for about 100 meters, but it moved surprisingly fast. First, you pass through security, then head to the ticket office. Fortunately, the ticket line was quite short, so we didn't have to wait long. Overall, the whole process took about 30 minutes. 🏛️ Dolmabahçe was built in the 19th century by order of Sultan Abdülmecid I. In 1856, the royal court moved here from Topkapi. Its architecture is a blend of Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism, making it look quite different from traditional Ottoman residences. 🏛️ Inside, you’ll find 285 rooms and 46 halls filled with opulent decor, gold, and crystal. One of the highlights is the massive crystal chandelier, weighing approximately 4.5 tons. 🏛️ The palace is also deeply tied to the history of modern Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk spent his final years here. In his room, the clocks are still set to 9:05—the exact time of his passing on November 10, 1938. 🏛️ Cost: Tickets for foreigners start at around 2,000 ₺. Prices vary by ticket type and are subject to change. 📍 Address: Dolmabahçe Cd., Beşiktaş, Istanbul. The easiest way to get there is by taking transport to Kabataş, followed by a short walk. 🏛️ Best time to visit: It’s best to arrive when it opens, around 9:00 AM. Crowds grow significantly during the day, especially during peak season. 🏛️ My advice: If you're in Istanbul, Dolmabahçe is a must-see. Don't be discouraged by a long line at the entrance—in our experience, it moved very quickly. Even on a drizzly day with muted Bosphorus views, it was still breathtakingly beautiful.

Galata Tower 🏙️ One of Istanbul’s most recognisable landmarks, and arguably the easiest place to get that classic Istanbul skyline shot. Instead of photographing it only from directly underneath, walk around the surrounding streets and look for angles where the tower rises above the historic rooftops. Golden hour is particularly beautiful. 📷 Best shot: You standing on the cobbled street with Galata Tower towering behind you. ⏰ Best time: Early morning for fewer people, or golden hour. 2. Colorful houses 🎨 The colourful streets of Balat are perfect if you want something more playful and Instagram-friendly. Brightly painted historic houses, steep streets and colourful stairways create plenty of natural backdrops. Go in the morning before the neighbourhood gets busy. 📷 Best shot: Walking uphill through the colourful streets rather than posing directly in front of a house. ⏰ Best time: Morning. 3. Suleymaniye Mosque 🕌 For me, this is the most underrated of the three. The mosque itself is spectacular, but the real Instagram payoff is the elevated view towards the Golden Horn, Galata and the Bosphorus. The terrace provides a fantastic layered Istanbul skyline. 📷 Best shot: Frame yourself against the mosque courtyard or use the Golden Horn as the background. ⏰ Best time: Late afternoon/golden hour. Bonus: If you’re travelling as a couple, I’d swap Balat for Ortaköy Mosque at blue hour. The mosque, Bosphorus and illuminated bridge make an excellent romantic shot. #couplegoalstravel #travel2026

It's a good idea to have cash ready, as not all gates accept credit cards. 4. Getting around downtown Kusadasi is easy. Fethiye is the kind of place where you can spend the morning swimming in turquoise water, explore ancient Lycian ruins in the afternoon and finish the day eating fresh fish beside the marina. Let's discover it! 🫶🏼 Located on Türkiye’s southwestern coast, it is also an excellent base for exploring Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, Kayaköy and the surrounding islands. What I liked most is the variety: Fethiye works equally well for a relaxing beach holiday, hiking trip or active itinerary filled with boat excursions and paragliding. My main recommendation is not to treat Fethiye simply as the gateway to Ölüdeniz. The town and surrounding region deserve several days. ℹ️ Practical Visit Information 📍 Location: Muğla Province, southwestern Türkiye ✈️ Nearest airport: Dalaman Airport (DLM) 🗓️ Recommended stay: 4–5 days ☀️ Best months: May, June, September and October 🏖️ Don’t miss: Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, Kayaköy, Fethiye Old Town and a boat excursion ⛵ Best experience: A full-day trip through the surrounding bays and islands 🪂 For adventure: Paragliding from Babadağ above Ölüdeniz 🚌 Getting around: Dolmuş minibuses are useful for Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy and nearby areas 👟 Bring: Comfortable shoes, water shoes, sunscreen and a hat 📸 Best photography: Babadağ, Ölüdeniz viewpoints and the Lycian rock tombs 💡 Best tip: Stay several nights rather than visiting Fethiye as a rushed day trip ⚠️ Important: Summer temperatures can be intense, so schedule archaeological sites and hiking for early morning or late afternoon. ✈️ Getting There from Dalaman Airport Dalaman Airport is the main airport for Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. Airport coaches and transfers connect Dalaman with Fethiye, while taxis and private transfers are convenient if you’re arriving late or carrying several bags. Once in Fethiye, you don’t necessarily need a rental car. Local dolmuş minibuses are inexpensive and useful for reaching many popular destinations. A car becomes more worthwhile if you want to explore remote beaches and archaeological sites independently. 🏖️ Ölüdeniz Is Famous for a Reason Ölüdeniz is around 15 km from Fethiye and is one of Türkiye’s most recognisable coastal destinations. The combination of mountains, intensely blue Mediterranean water and the famous lagoon creates an extraordinary landscape. However, don’t expect an undiscovered beach. Ölüdeniz becomes very busy during summer. Go early in the morning if you want a quieter experience and better photographs. The main beach and lagoon area offer different environments, so explore beyond the first stretch of sand you encounter. 🪂 Paragliding from Babadağ This is probably Fethiye’s most famous adventure experience. Paragliders launch from Babadağ, the enormous mountain rising behind Ölüdeniz, before descending towards the coastline. Even if you don’t want to paraglide, travelling up Babadağ is worthwhile for the views. For tandem paragliding, choose an established operator, check weather conditions and follow the instructor’s safety directions. Don’t select an operator based solely on the cheapest price. 🦋 Butterfly Valley Butterfly Valley is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and is best known for its spectacular coastal setting. Many visitors arrive by boat from Ölüdeniz. The beach can become busy when excursion boats arrive simultaneously, so expectations matter: this is no longer an isolated secret beach. Still, approaching the valley from the sea is beautiful. If hiking around the area, use proper footwear and don’t attempt dangerous cliffside shortcuts for photographs. ⛵ Take a Boat Trip A boat excursion is one of the best ways to spend a full day around Fethiye. Tours typically visit several islands and bays, allowing plenty of time for swimming. You may see excursions advertised as 12 Islands Tours, although itineraries vary between operators and according to weather conditions. Before booking, ask: · How many passengers will be onboard? · How many swimming stops? · Is lunch included? · Are drinks included? · Is there shade? · Will there be loud music? · What time does the boat return? A smaller, quieter boat can be worth paying more for. 👻 Explore Kayaköy Kayaköy offers something completely different from Fethiye’s beaches. The hillside is covered with abandoned stone houses, churches and streets associated with the former Greek settlement of Livissi. Following the population exchange between Greece and Türkiye in the 1920s, the settlement was largely abandoned. Walk slowly through the ruins and imagine the community that once existed here. Visit early or late in the day because there is limited shade. Kayaköy is also one of the region’s most atmospheric photography locations. 🏛️ Look Up at the Lycian Rock Tombs You don’t even need to leave Fethiye to encounter ancient history. Above the town are impressive Lycian rock-cut tombs, including the famous Tomb of Amyntas. The climb rewards you with excellent views across Fethiye. Go around late afternoon rather than during the hottest part of the day. Bring water and wear shoes with grip. 🏺 Visit Ancient Telmessos Modern Fethiye developed around ancient Telmessos, an important Lycian settlement. Remains are scattered around the modern city rather than concentrated in one enormous archaeological park. The ancient theatre near the harbour and Lycian tombs provide reminders that this seemingly modern resort town has a history stretching back thousands of years. This combination of ancient ruins and everyday urban life is part of Fethiye’s charm. 🌊 Don’t Ignore Çalış Beach Çalış Beach doesn’t have the dramatic lagoon scenery of Ölüdeniz, but it has another major advantage: sunsets. The long waterfront promenade is perfect for an evening walk followed by dinner. Come shortly before sunset, find somewhere beside the sea and stay as the sky changes colour behind the islands. It is also considerably easier to reach from central Fethiye than some more remote beaches. 🐟 Visit the Fish Market For a different dining experience, explore Fethiye Fish Market. The traditional concept is simple: choose seafood from one of the fishmongers and have a surrounding restaurant prepare it for you. Before buying, confirm both the seafood price and the restaurant’s cooking/service charge. This avoids confusion when the final bill arrives. Choose whatever looks freshest rather than automatically ordering the most expensive fish. 🍽️ What to Eat Don’t restrict yourself to international resort food. Try: · Fresh grilled fish · Calamari · Octopus · Pide · Lahmacun · Köfte · Gözleme · Mantı · Stuffed vine leaves · Haydari · Şakşuka · Turkish breakfast For dessert, look for baklava, künefe or sütlaç. Also try local markets for seasonal fruit, olives, cheeses and other regional products. 📸 Best Photography Spots For the classic turquoise-water photograph, head above Ölüdeniz rather than photographing only from beach level. Babadağ provides the ultimate panoramic perspective. The Lycian tombs offer excellent views over Fethiye. Kayaköy is best photographed early or late when shadows add texture to the abandoned stone buildings. On boat trips, have your camera ready before arriving at each bay. The clearest view of the water is often from the deck while approaching. Carry plenty of water and use proper footwear rather than sandals. 🌅 Best Time to Visit May, June, September and October are excellent. The weather is warm enough for swimming while hiking and sightseeing are generally more comfortable than during peak summer. July and August bring intense heat, higher accommodation prices and crowded beaches. If visiting during peak season, start early. A 7:00 AM beach and a 1:00 PM beach can feel like two completely different places. 💡 Tips That Will Make Your Trip Better Use dolmuş minibuses instead of taxis for common routes. Book paragliding early in your stay in case weather causes delays. Take at least one boat excursion. Visit Ölüdeniz early. Carry water shoes because not every beach has soft sand. Spend an evening at Çalış Beach. Explore Kayaköy outside the hottest hours. And leave some free time instead of booking an excursion every day. Fethiye is also a place to slow down. ⚠️ Things to Avoid Don’t spend your entire trip at Ölüdeniz. Don’t attempt exposed hiking trails in midday summer heat. If you want to experience Alanya from a different perspective, I highly recommend a boat trip. We set sail around 3:00 PM and cruised along the coastline. We chose Alanya specifically for its stunning views, even though we were staying in Side. In just one trip, we got to see several of the city's most iconic spots: 🏖️ Cleopatra Beach 🏰 Alanya Kalesi Fortress ⛰️ The mountains and rocky coastline 🌊 Caves and hidden bays 🐠 Fish swimming right in the open sea We stopped along the way for a swim and some paddleboarding (SUP). To top it off, the crew grilled some delicious kebabs with vegetables right on the yacht 🔥 And here's a nice bonus: if you're lucky, you might spot some dolphins 🐬 Unfortunately, we didn't see any this time. As sunset approached, we began our journey back. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, turning the sea golden while the lights of Alanya started to twinkle, was pure magic ✨ With some chill music playing in the background, it was the ultimate relaxation. It’s a stunning blend of Europe and Asia, where grand mosques and palaces meet bustling bazaars and charming, quiet alleys. If you only have 3 days, don't rush to see everything. DAY 1 — THE HISTORIC CENTER 🕌 The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Start your day at Sultanahmet Square, home to the city’s two most iconic symbols. The Blue Mosque is free but is an active place of worship, so follow the rules: women must cover their heads, shoulders, and knees, and everyone must remove their shoes. Hagia Sophia is right across from it (entry fee applies). If you go inside, definitely head to the second floor for the best views of the interior. 💫 Basilica Cistern. Just a two-minute walk from the mosques is this ancient underground reservoir from the Byzantine era. The dim lighting, hundreds of columns, and the famous Medusa heads make the Cistern one of the most atmospheric spots in the city. 🏯 Topkapi Palace. Before sunset, take a Bosphorus cruise or just hop on a regular public ferry.
