Here is another magnificent church that bears witness to centuries of history. As a medieval building primarily constructed between the 14th and early 16th centuries, with the town's cutlery and wool trade being incredibly prosperous back then, it was built on an exceptionally grand scale, and is even hailed by many as the "Cathedral of Essex." As soon as I stepped inside, I was deeply struck by its profound historical atmosphere. If you visit, make sure to check out the Stella chandelier inside the church. You truly won't see a design like this anywhere else. This giant star-shaped chandelier was installed way back in 1910. It features a total of 42 lights, which actually tie back to the Gospel of Matthew. They represent the family tree from Abraham to Jesus Christ across three stages of 14 generations each, with every generation represented by a single light. The most brilliant part is the large sphere design at the very bottom. It symbolizes the entire world, representing God as the light of the world, eternally shining upon all of humanity. #uttlesfordtrips Thaxted is one of those villages that feels like it’s been quietly keeping a secret—and the Guildhall and Church are at its historic heart. The half-timbered Guildhall, dating back to the 15th century, is a striking sight with its open arcade, exposed beams, and a sense of timeless grace. Just steps away is the grand Thaxted Church, often called the “cathedral of Essex” thanks to its soaring tower and beautiful stained glass. When I visited, the whole village was hushed under soft afternoon light. I wandered the cobbled lanes, browsed a little bookshop, and sat on a bench near the church, completely content. There’s music history here too—Gustav Holst once lived in the village and played the church organ. Whether you’re a lover of history, architecture, or peaceful old towns, Thaxted will charm you completely. It’s an ideal slow travel stop—simple, soulful, and quietly unforgettable.
