Three-day itinerary Day 1: Morning: Wander through the Italian Style Area to see the red-roofed Western-style buildings and take portraits at Marco Polo Square. Noon: Have guobacai with soy milk on Hebei Road—slippery, garlicky, and delicious. Evening: Take an 80 yuan night cruise on the Haihe River. The lights on both banks look like the Seine, and the onboard commentary is quite funny. There's basically no one on the streets between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM; I almost melted on the side of the road while visiting Ancient Culture Street on my third day 🫠. Second, the queue for jianbing guozi at the Northwest Corner: if you go at 7:00 AM, you'll be waiting for at least 40 minutes, and locals might cut in line, making it awkward to say anything. Tips Reasons to visit: Most attractions are free, the food is cheap, and it's only a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Beijing, making it perfect for a weekend getaway. Reasons not to visit: July is hot enough to make you question your life choices. If you're sensitive to the sun or humidity, come in October instead. If China is on your travel list, the first cities that usually come to mind are Beijing, Shanghai, or perhaps Guangzhou. But this time, I found myself looking a little further north, towards Tianjin. What makes Tianjin especially interesting is that it isn’t simply another big Chinese city. China has only four direct-administered municipalities: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing, and Tianjin is one of them. Sitting close to Beijing and facing the Bohai Sea, Tianjin has grown into a fascinating mix of old-world charm, modern city life, history, and waterfront scenery. And then I came across the flight fare. ✈️ A round-trip direct flight from Singapore to Tianjin for around US$248 / S$315 per person immediately caught my attention. When similar Singapore–China flights can easily go beyond US$600 and sometimes even above US$800, this fare feels like one of those deals you don’t come across every day. For backpackers, it gets even more interesting. The fare doesn’t include free checked baggage, so it may not be the best choice if you travel with a large suitcase. But if you’re the kind of traveller who can fit everything into a backpack, it suddenly makes a lot of sense. There’s also no transit to worry about, it’s a direct flight, which makes the whole journey much simpler. Honestly, I’m a little jealous of travellers in Singapore who can find a China getaway like this at the current price. 🌆 A different side of China Tianjin itself has plenty to keep you busy once you arrive. One of the first places I’d want to see is the Haihe River. The river cuts through the heart of the city, and the atmosphere changes completely as the day turns into evening. Walking along the waterfront with the city lights coming on, bridges glowing over the water, and Tianjin’s skyline stretching into the distance sounds like the kind of evening where there’s no need to rush anywhere. Then there’s Italian Style Town, one of the places that gives Tianjin such a distinctive character. European-style architecture sits right in the middle of China, creating a cityscape that feels surprisingly different from what you might expect. It’s the sort of neighbourhood where wandering around without a strict plan can be more enjoyable than ticking places off a list. For something more traditional, Ancient Culture Street offers a completely different side of Tianjin. Traditional architecture, local snacks, small shops and Chinese handicrafts fill the area, making it a good place to slow down and get a feel for the city’s older character. And, of course, there’s the Tianjin Eye. Set above the Haihe River, the giant Ferris wheel has become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. I’d especially want to see it after sunset, when the lights of Tianjin begin to reflect across the river. That’s probably when the city feels most cinematic. Another reason Tianjin caught my attention is its location. Beijing is surprisingly close.
