Don’t just focus on crowded popular cities with no signal if you want to escape the heat in August. These 8 places are reachable by high-speed train, have fewer crowds, and cooler scenery. I’ve checked them out for you, and some even make me want to go again. Stop asking “Is August only for staying home with the AC?” After reading this, you’ll know where to go. 1️⃣ Changchun | Jilin Changchun’s summer is the kind where walking the streets at 3 PM, the breeze makes you want to wear a jacket. Don’t treat it like an ordinary provincial capital—go straight to the highlights. 🚄 Get off at Changchun station and take a taxi to the Puppet Manchurian Imperial Palace Museum for just a bit more than the starting fare. After 4 PM, the slanting light shines through the old building’s windows, making photos more atmospheric than in the morning. ⚠️ Note that the indoor areas have strong air conditioning, so bring a light layer if you get cold easily. Jingyuetan is better in the morning. Rent a bike and ride around the lake. The forest is 2–3 degrees cooler than the city. For lunch, find a small restaurant near the park entrance. Guobaorou and sweet red bean paste buns are safe bets. In the afternoon, visit Changchun World Sculpture Park. It’s large and quiet, perfect for a slow stroll. I find Changying Century City more family-oriented. If you have kids, spend half a day there. Adults without a passion for old movies can use that time for Jingyuetan. 🍜 At night, head to Guilin Road alley for fried chicken racks and grilled cold noodles, paired with a bottle of ice-cold Hongbaolai. That’s what summer should feel like. 2️⃣ Shannan | Tibet Shannan’s altitude is a bit higher than Lhasa’s, but August is its gentlest season. The “altitude sickness” you worry about is mostly eased by the deep blue of Yamdrok Lake. 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Lhasa to Shannan, then charter a car to Yamdrok Lake. The whole trip takes about two hours. ⚠️ Don’t rush to take photos at the first viewing platform. Keep going to the lakeside near Dongla Township. It’s almost empty, with little wind and a mirror-like water surface. ⏰ From 2 PM to 5 PM, the sunlight hits the lake directly, making the colors purest. I sat on a rock by the lake, the wind blowing through my jacket, cold but refreshing, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the view. 🍜 Stop at Gangdui Town on the way for a bowl of Tibetan noodles with sweet tea. The noodles are firm, but the milky aroma will stay with you all the way. Remember, Yamdrok Lake’s beauty isn’t about checking in, it’s about zoning out. Bring a portable oxygen bottle just in case, but you probably won’t need it. 3️⃣ Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang August at Jingpo Lake is the kind where the water feels cooler than the air. If you’re tired of humid heat, coming here is like jumping into an ice-cold soda. 🚄 Get off the high-speed train at Mudanjiang station, then take a taxi or carpool to Jingpo Lake Scenic Area, about an hour away. ⚠️ Diaoshuilou Waterfall has scheduled diving shows every day. Check the times before you go so you don’t miss the morning show like I did and waste an hour waiting in the afternoon. Boat tours are popular, but I recommend walking along the lakeside boardwalk. The lake breeze mixed with water vapor hits your face, opening your pores. 🍜 For lunch, find a place outside the park serving iron pot stew. Catfish stewed with eggplant has a rich broth that goes well with two bowls of rice. Mudanjiang city itself is worth half a day. Take an evening walk along the riverside trail. It’s cool and peaceful. ⏰ After 7 PM, the river glows orange-pink from the sunset. Locals sit by the shore with beer, and no one rushes you away. 4️⃣ Chengde | Hebei The name “Summer Resort” is no joke. In August, the temperature difference between shade and sun can be 4–5 degrees. The whole park is like a giant natural air-conditioned room. 🚄 Get off at Chengde South station and take a taxi to the Summer Resort, about 20 minutes. ⚠️ The resort has a palace area and a lake area. Don’t just visit the palace and leave. The best parts are the lake and plains behind, which require some walking. I suggest taking the mountain loop bus to save energy and see the whole view. Jinshanling Great Wall is a bit far from the city but worth a full day. This section is much wilder and less crowded than Badaling. ⏰ Start climbing at 4 PM. The sunset turns the wall a warm gold. The wind is strong but not dry. From the enemy towers, you can see the mountains rolling like waves. 🍜 In Chengde city, find a place serving buckwheat noodles with stewed beef shank. It’s refreshing. Don’t rush to leave at night. Walk along Wulie River. The cool breeze is much nicer than your hotel room. 5️⃣ Ningde | Fujian Many know Xiapu as a photography paradise, but in August, Ningde’s real value is its coolness and lack of crowds. Taimu Mountain is granite terrain with strong winds and many trees. Climbing it makes you forget it’s 35 degrees below. 🚄 Get off at Ningde station, then take a bus to Taimu Mountain, about an hour. ⚠️ The “One Line Sky” on the mountain is very narrow. If you’re a bit heavy or carrying a big bag, be cautious. I saw a guy stuck for three minutes and had to turn sideways to get past. Baishuijiang is better for families and water lovers. The shallow water plaza in Zhongyang is just ankle-deep, ice-cold and clear. Lying in the water feels like soaking in a natural ice spring. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain, they sell guangbing stuffed with pickled vegetables. Salty, crispy, and fragrant. Buy two before climbing and stash them in your bag. They’re better than any snack. Get to Beiqi mudflats in Xiapu early. ⏰ Arrive at 5:30 AM. When the tide is halfway out, the mudflats reflect the sky, looking unreal. ⚠️ Remember to wear non-slip shoes. The mud is slipperier than it looks. 6️⃣ Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Hunan Phoenix Ancient Town isn’t cool in August, but Dehang Grand Canyon is. I mention these two together because I suggest visiting the canyon during the day and staying in the ancient town at night. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Huaihua South station, then transfer to Phoenix, about an hour. ⚠️ The bar street in the ancient town is noisy until 11:30 PM. If you have elderly or kids, don’t stay in riverside rooms. Choose a quieter alley further in. It’s peaceful and cheaper. Dehang Grand Canyon’s Liusha Waterfall is powerful in August. Getting close, the mist hits your face like a giant humidifier. ⏰ Enter the canyon at 3 PM. Sunlight filters through the canyon cracks and hits the waterfall. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a small rainbow. Shibadong Village and Aizhai can be visited together. The view under Aizhai Bridge is spectacular. 🍜 In Phoenix, find a place serving blood duck. The duck is chewy, and the sticky rice cakes soak up the broth. Two bowls of rice are a must. At night, dip your feet in the Tuojiang River. The breeze from upstream is just right. 7️⃣ Xianning | Hubei Xianning isn’t cool in August but has fewer crowds, low prices, and is close to Wuhan—just a half-hour high-speed train ride. The Chibi Ancient Battlefield is for Three Kingdoms fans, but even if you’re not into history, the riverside scenery is perfect for zoning out. 🚄 Get off at Xianning North station and take a taxi to Chibi Ancient Battlefield, about 40 minutes. ⚠️ The scenic area has many replica ancient buildings, so don’t expect too much. But the cliff carvings by the river are real. Standing on the riverside boardwalk, you can imagine the fire attacks of the past. ⏰ Enter after 4:30 PM when the light is soft and most people have left. The river breeze is strong but not hot. 🍜 In the city, find a place serving lotus root soup. Lotus root stewed with ribs is fresh and sweet. After drinking it, you’ll feel nourished. Xianning also has a hidden gem—hot springs. You might think soaking in hot springs in summer is crazy, but they have cool spring pools with water just over 20 degrees. Soaking in them is more refreshing than swimming. ⚠️ Check first if it’s a cool or hot spring. Don’t faint from heat in the middle of summer. 8️⃣ Dalian | Liaoning Dalian in August is one of the few northern coastal cities that’s dry and cool. The sea breeze dries your sweat instantly. Between Jinshitan and Laohutan, I prefer Jinshitan. 🚄 Get off at Dalian station and take the light rail line 3 straight to Jinshitan, about an hour. ⚠️ Jinshitan’s beach has more pebbles than sand. Walking barefoot is uncomfortable, so bring beach shoes. There’s a free geology museum in the park, but it closes at 4 PM, so don’t arrive late. Laohutan Ocean Park is more family-friendly with many shows. Kids will love it, but weekends get so crowded it’s overwhelming. Adults seeking peace should go to Tangli Lake Park, a local hidden gem. The lake is large with many trees. Rent a small boat and row all afternoon. The breeze is cool and the water calm. ⏰ At dusk, go to Xinghai Square. The sea breeze fills the square, and the sunset turns the cross-sea bridge golden. 🍜 At night, find a seafood stall. Spicy stir-fried clams and grilled oysters with ice-cold beer and sea breeze—that’s how August should be. High in the Himalayas, between India and Tibet, lies Bhutan — a small kingdom where ancient traditions, dramatic mountains and everyday life are still deeply connected. This isn't the kind of destination you visit just to tick off famous attractions. Bhutan feels more like a journey into a completely different way of seeing the world. 🏔️ THE HIMALAYAS ARE ONLY THE BEGINNING One of Bhutan's most famous sights is Paro Taktsang, better known as the Tiger's Nest Monastery. Clinging to a cliff high above the Paro Valley, the monastery can only be reached by hiking through pine forests and mountain trails. The journey is part of the experience. Prayer flags move in the mountain wind, forests surround the trail and, eventually, the monastery appears above the valley. It feels almost impossible that a building could exist in a place like this. 🏹 THE NATIONAL SPORT IS ARCHERY Forget football. In Bhutan, archery is the national sport. Traditional competitions are accompanied by singing, dancing and celebrations, turning what might look like a simple sporting event into an important part of Bhutanese culture. If you have the chance to see a traditional match, don't just watch the arrows. Watch the people. That's where the real story is. 🌶️ THE FOOD IS NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT Bhutanese cuisine is surprisingly bold. The country's most famous dish is Ema Datshi — green or red chillies cooked with cheese. And yes... CHILLIES ARE TREATED AS A VEGETABLE, NOT JUST A SPICE. 🌶️ You'll also find dishes such as Phaksha Paa, red rice, buckwheat-based foods and momos. For visitors who love trying food that feels completely different from home, Bhutan is a fascinating destination. 🍵 AND THEN THERE'S TEA Suja, or butter tea, is one of Bhutan's traditional drinks. It is salty, rich and very different from the sweet tea many travelers might expect. Sometimes the best travel memories come from trying something you've never tasted before. 🏘️ LOOK AT THE BUILDINGS Bhutanese architecture is another reason the country feels so different. Traditional houses, monasteries and dzongs have distinctive wooden details, painted decorations and sloping roofs. Traditional architectural rules are still important in Bhutan, helping preserve the visual identity of towns and villages. 🧺 SHOPPING FEELS DIFFERENT TOO In Thimphu, the Cottage and Small Industry Market is a great place to discover locally made products, traditional textiles, food, tea and handicrafts. Instead of looking for another international shopping mall, this is where you can find things that actually tell you something about the country. 🌿 A DIFFERENT IDEA OF TOURISM Bhutan has built its tourism model around the idea of protecting its environment and culture rather than simply maximizing visitor numbers. The country describes its approach as high-value, low-volume tourism. Visitors also contribute through the Sustainable Development Fee, which supports conservation, infrastructure, cultural preservation and other national priorities. And there's a bigger idea behind all of this: GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS. These 8 destinations are the perfect pace for slow travel, based on my experience. They don’t rely on trendy filters but on genuine landscapes, old streets, and a warm meal. If you’re tired of rushing through sights, take a look below. 01 Anshun | Guizhou Huangguoshu Waterfall is famous, but I advise you not to focus on it alone. Enter the park at 7:30 AM when the mist hasn’t cleared and the boardwalk is quiet—you can hear the muffled sound of water hitting the rocks. At the halfway viewing platform, the waterfall rushes right at you, soaking your clothes. Wear non-slip shoes and bring a light raincoat. In the afternoon, visit Longgong Cave. Take a boat into the cave where the lights on the stalactites make it feel like another dimension. The waterway is narrow, and the boatman’s pole echoes through the cave, making it refreshingly cool. ⚠️ The stairs at the Longgong exit are steep. If your knees aren’t strong, take it slow and don’t push yourself. You can take it easy exploring Anshun—one spot a day is enough. 02 Shannan | Tibet Yamdrok Lake isn’t in Lhasa but makes me want to pause more than Lhasa does. From Shannan city, cross the Gangbala Pass, and the lake suddenly appears below, unreal in its blue. Don’t rush to take photos. Find a rock to sit on and watch the clouds drift slowly across the water. It’s windy by the lake, so secure your hat. Oxygen tanks aren’t necessary, but slowing your movements is always a good idea. In the afternoon, when the light hits the lake at an angle, the water shows several layers of color. Your phone can’t capture it, but your eyes will remember. ⚠️ Some locals charge for photos while leading yaks by the lake. Ask the price before approaching. This place is perfect for solo daydreaming or sitting quietly side by side with someone. 03 Xiamen | Fujian I recommend going to Gulangyu Island after 3 PM. The morning crowds have left, and the alleys reveal their true charm. Get off at Sanqiutian Pier and avoid the busy Longtou Road. Turn onto Bishan Road where bougainvillea drapes over old villas, rustling in the breeze. Railway Culture Park is free. Walk along the abandoned tracks shaded by phoenix trees. At 5 PM, the light dapples the sleepers, perfect for a stroll. You can bring back two boxes of vegetarian cakes from Nanputuo Temple, but don’t buy them at the temple entrance—shops inside are 5 yuan cheaper. The Xiamen Botanical Garden is large; just check out the succulent section to save your legs. ⚠️ Book your Gulangyu ferry ticket a day in advance. You usually can’t buy tickets at the window on the day of travel. 04 Chengdu | Sichuan The slow pace in Chengdu isn’t on Chunxi Road but on Qingcheng Mountain. Tiantai Mountain is wilder than Qingcheng and offers firefly viewing in summer, but the trails are slippery—don’t climb after rain. Anren Ancient Town’s Republican-era mansions are worth visiting. It’s quiet, and the old lady selling tofu pudding on the street will chat with you for a while. Arrive early at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. It opens at 7:30 AM, so get there before the pandas nap after 9 AM. 🍜 After seeing the pandas, grab red oil wontons at any local hole-in-the-wall restaurant—they taste better than those inside the park. At Dujiangyan’s Fish Mouth diversion, standing there watching the river split makes you admire ancient engineering. 05 Jinzhou | Liaoning Yiwulü Mountain isn’t popular, but that’s why it keeps its peaceful mountain vibe. Enter through the gate flanked by pines and cypresses. The stone steps are polished smooth by time. At the halfway Wanghai Temple, look back to see the neat farmland on the plains like a chessboard. The wind at the summit clears your mind. Don’t descend the same way—take the back mountain route to see the Ming dynasty city wall ruins, broken but authentic. ⚠️ Supplies are scarce on the mountain, so bring enough water and buy what you need before climbing. This spot suits those who like to climb slowly, stopping often to enjoy the trees and rocks—they’re all part of the scenery. 06 Weifang | Shandong Qingzhou Ancient City is the least touristy ancient city I’ve seen. Locals still live there. In the morning, vendors push tricycles selling tofu pudding for 5 yuan a bowl—salty, fragrant, and silky. The city isn’t big; it takes about half an hour to walk from south to north gate, but the alleys hide many treasures. The rockery in Ouyuan Garden dates back to the Ming dynasty, covered in moss and cool to the touch. The church and mosque face each other across the street, peacefully coexisting. In the afternoon, visit Zhaode Ancient Street where fewer people gather. Under the old locust tree, elders play chess—you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into someone’s life. 🍜 Longsheng Pastry’s honey three-cut cake is sweet but not greasy. Half a pound is perfect for the road. This place is great for spending a whole day wandering at a relaxed pace. 07 Fuyang | Anhui Bali River is an underrated spot. It’s not a refined water town but a vast area of water and reeds, very open. On a boat, water birds skim the bow, their wings scattering droplets. Located just a few minutes from Barkhor Street and Jokhang Temple, this hidden rooftop combines authentic Tibetan cuisine with one of the most unforgettable panoramas in the city. Here’s exactly what I’d recommend based on my own experience 👇 💧 1. Start with the basics: water, rest, and a slower pace Even if you feel perfectly fine, remember that altitude affects everyone differently. Drink more water than usual, avoid rushing, and listen to your body. Trust me — the monasteries, mountains, and viewpoints will still be there tomorrow. 📍 2. Walk to Potala Palace around sunset This is probably the easiest and most rewarding activity for your first evening. The golden light before sunset is beautiful, but don’t leave too early. Once darkness falls, the Potala Palace lights up with hundreds of glowing lights and looks absolutely magical. ✨ As you can see in my video, the illuminated palace becomes one of the most impressive sights in the city, and the reflection in the pond opposite the square creates some of the best photo opportunities in Lhasa. 📸 My tip: stay at least 30–60 minutes after sunset — some of the most beautiful photos happen after the sky gets dark. 🚶♀️ 3. Do you need it? Where can you buy it? What happens if you don’t adapt well to the altitude? After spending a week in Tibet in May and traveling all the way from Xining to Lhasa by train, I can honestly say: finding oxygen in Lhasa is much easier than most people expect. 📍 Where to Buy Portable Oxygen in Lhasa The good news is that oxygen is everywhere. You can find portable oxygen canisters: ✅ in pharmacies ✅ in convenience stores ✅ in supermarkets ✅ around Barkhor Street and the Old Town ✅ near major tourist attractions ✅ in some hotel lobbies During our trip, we bought portable oxygen canisters for approximately 10–15 RMB each, depending on the location and size. The funny part? We spent weeks worrying about oxygen before arriving, only to discover that it was available practically on every corner. 🚫 Can You Bring Oxygen from Home? Generally, no. Portable oxygen canisters are considered compressed gas and are usually prohibited on commercial flights. Bringing filled cylinders on trains can also be restricted.
