If you're visiting Cardiff and want to experience the very best of South Wales in a single day, this unforgettable journey through castles, Roman history, and breathtaking landscapes should be at the top of your list. Our adventure began in Caerleon, one of the most important Roman sites in Britain. Walking through the ancient Amphitheatre, it was easy to imagine the crowds that once gathered for gladiatorial games nearly 2,000 years ago. The site is also linked to the legends of King Arthur, adding an extra layer of mystery to its fascinating history. The National Roman Legion Museum and Roman Baths provide an incredible glimpse into life on the edge of the Roman Empire. Next came the mighty Chepstow Castle, dramatically perched above the River Wye. As Britain's oldest surviving stone castle, it offers spectacular views and centuries of stories hidden within its walls. A short drive away, we discovered the haunting beauty of Tintern Abbey. Nestled in the heart of the Wye Valley, these magnificent Gothic ruins have inspired artists, poets, and travelers for generations. Even today, the peaceful atmosphere makes it one of the most magical places in Wales. The journey continued to Caerphilly Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Its famous leaning tower—leaning even more than Pisa's!—is just one of the reasons this castle is so impressive. Finally, we visited the picturesque Caldicot Castle, surrounded by peaceful parkland and scenic walking paths. It was the perfect place to end a day filled with history, legends, and unforgettable views. 💡 Travel Tips: · Bring comfortable walking shoes—there's plenty to explore at each site. · Pack a waterproof jacket; Welsh weather can change quickly. · Allow time for photos at Tintern Abbey—the setting is spectacular. · Visit Caerphilly Castle's moat and leaning tower for some unique photo opportunities. · Bring snacks and water, especially if you're exploring all the stops in one day. · Don't rush—each location has its own fascinating story worth discovering. ✨ From Roman amphitheatres and Arthurian legends to medieval castles and ancient abbeys, this is one of the most rewarding day trips you can take from Cardiff. Tintern abbey is an incredible ruin of a medieval abbey that straddles the border of England and Wales in Tintern, Monmouthshire. It’s one of the biggest ruins I’ve ever seen and it’s hard to process how they managed to build it nearly 900 years ago. The structure itself has struggled since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, but since it was taken over as a national site of interest it’s seen a lot of care and attention. As its stands the abbey is full ruin with no roof and no full room structures, but you are able to walk though most of the ruin if you follow the designated path. Some of the main church hall is sectioned off as it is currently being worked on. There is information dotted about the route and a lot of information in the gift shop, the staff are also very helpful and informative. It’s costs around £9.50 per adult but it’s worth it as the site itself is incredible and the entry fee goes towards its continued protection. I’d highly recommend making time for this if you are in the area! #westerneurope #architecture #culture #travel #thingstodo #museums #myitinerary #citydaytours #wales #uk #traveling

Even in its ruined state, Tintern Abbey is breathtaking. A perfect destination for those interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of peace in a stunning natural setting. We went on a public holiday, there was some group of people dressed up with medieval coats and war equipments. They were very knowledgeable and helped us to understand the history, even demonstrated the war.
