🎌 WHAT TO BRING FROM JAPAN: Helpful Tips
Japan is a country from which it's very easy to bring back either useless souvenirs or truly valuable items that you'll actually use for years. I'm sharing what I buy and recommend myself—no random junk or dust-collecting items.
🍵 MATCHA, TEA, AND EVERYTHING FOR TEA DRINKING
Japanese tea is a whole new level of quality.
What to buy:
• Matcha (look for ceremonial grade)
• Sencha and hōjicha in tins
• Tea bowls, bamboo whisks, and spoons
It's best to buy from specialized tea shops in Kyoto, rather than from tourist shops. The tea is light, compact, and survives flights well.
Why it's worth bringing: Even basic Japanese matcha is higher in quality than most "premium" options outside of Japan.
Why I recommend buying in Kyoto? There's a small town nearby where most matcha is produced. Last year, Japan was in the midst of a matcha crisis. 80% of stores simply couldn't restock, but I stocked up for the year in my wonderful hidden spots. I'll share if needed.
🍱 JAPANESE TABLEWARE AND KNIVES
One of the best and most practical souvenirs.
What I take:
• Handmade ceramic plates
• Tea and sake cups
• Japanese kitchen knives
In ceramic districts (for example, in Tokyo near Asakusa or in Kyoto), you can find very beautiful things at reasonable prices. This isn't a souvenir, but an item that will remind you of your trip every day.
🧴 COSMETICS AND CARE
Japanese cosmetics are one of the most popular items, and for good reason.
What's really worth considering:
• Sunscreens
• Sheet masks
• Pharmacy skincare
The best places are Donki (Don Quijote) and pharmacies. The selection is huge, and the prices are much lower than abroad.
🖊️ STATIONERY AND LIFE ITEMS
Japan is a perfectionist's paradise.
Check out:
• pens and markers
• notepads
• organizers
• stickers and packaging
These are the little things that unexpectedly become part of everyday life and make it more enjoyable.
🍬 SWEETS
If you want to bring something edible:
• KitKat with Japanese flavors
• matcha cookies
• rice snacks
• candies and chewy sweets
Get the packaged options—they're easy to transport and give as gifts.
🧿 AMULETS AND TEMPLE SOUVENIRS
Temples sell:
• omamori (amulets)
• ema tablets
• incense
Important: these are not decorative items, but symbolic reminders of a place and moment. I usually buy 1-2 of each, not dozens.
👜 VINTAGE
Japan has some of the best vintage shops in the world. Prices are below average and the quality is excellent. I listed the best vintage shops in Tokyo in the first post on my profile.
👘 CLOTHING
More specifically, Uniqlo, whose prices are the lowest in the world, and the quality is better than expensive brands. And their "brother," GU.
📌 MY CONCLUSION
The best purchases from Japan aren't souvenirs "as a keepsake," but things for life. Dishes, tea, cosmetics, clothes, stationery—all of this becomes part of the home and brings back every time you travel.
When in doubt, ask yourself: will I still be using this in six months? If the answer is "yes," go for it.
