I stayed one night at a minshuku near Tono Station (¥7,000 with breakfast, cash only) and walked the Sasa River at 06:40 the next morning before the first bus from Morioka arrived. The Magokoro Sasa River isn’t a park — it’s the reed-lined channel that runs behind the old merchant row, 1.2 km from the station to the Magokoro-kan bridge. The water is shallow, the reeds are taller than your waist in September, and the light comes sideways off the Iwate hills. No entry fee, no signs telling you to hurry. I saw a kingfisher and an old man in a sedge hat cutting grass with a sickle — he nodded, I nodded. Tono’s whole identity is “Japan’s rural soul” (the 1910 book Tono Monogatariby Kunio Yanagita). The Magokoro-kan (¥300, opens 09:00) explains the kappa and zashiki-warashi folklore, but the river walk is where the stories breathe. Buy a bento at the station kiosk (¥480, tuna-mayo or karaage) and eat it on the grass bank. Cards don’t work at the kiosk; ATMs in Tono are limited — pull ¥5,000 cash in Morioka before you branch off. Common error: rushing Tono as a 3-hour appendage to Morioka. The town rewards a 6 a.m. river and a 19:00 ozashiki dinner at a ryotei that seats 10. Would you rather check “Tono” off a list, or stand in reed mist where the kappa stories started? Hayaike Mineyama is a very special mountain for botanists and It is a mountain of "Zankyu" with the oldest mesozoic geology in Japan and withstood ice age erosion. A unique ecosystem created by serpentine. The serpentine that covers the entire mountain contains a lot of magnesium, creating a harsh environment that is very harmful to plants and prone to collapse. As a result, other plants were not able to invade, and only alpine plants (endemic species such as Hayachineus Yukisou and Nambutranoo) that survived from the ice age were isolated and remained in this mountain.

#springtravel I had such a fun time here! It's basically a bunch of old Japanese farmhouses that they gathered into one place surrounded by beautiful trees and nature. However, each house had a person attending it, stoking the fires and willing to help you out if there was any hands-on experience you could try. The interiors also had different traditional items on display so even if each house seemed similar they all had their different charm, making each one worth popping into. My favorite were the ones that had the horses in them too. It's one thing to hear and read about how the people used to share their homes with horses but it was so special to be able to see actual horses and get a better feel for what it may have been like back when people actually lived there. In the entrance there is a restaurant, gift shop, and some bathrooms. While there are provisions available to make the entrance house wheelchair accessible, once you get into the park itself it is nothing but uneven dirt/gravel paths and and steep steps to get into the houses
