Valley Garden — A Hidden Floral Canyon Inside Dartington Estate
Deep within the grounds of Dartington Hall Estate, lies the secluded Valley Garden, one of those places that many visitors never fully reach — not because it is inaccessible, but because it rewards those who wander further.
Tucked away in the estate’s lower landscape, the garden unfolds like a quiet secret carved into a natural ravine. In May, when rhododendrons burst into bloom, the entire valley transforms into a layered tapestry of deep greens, soft pinks, and vivid purples. The air feels lighter, carried by spring wind and the scent of blossoms drifting through the trees.
At the heart of the garden stands a small blue bridge — modest in size, yet striking in contrast against the surrounding foliage. When flowers peak, the bridge becomes a focal point of color and composition, framing reflections in the water below and tying together the natural flow of the valley.
Unlike formal English gardens, this space feels more organic and immersive. Sloping paths descend between trees and flower beds, revealing shifting perspectives at every turn. Light filters through branches, casting moving patterns across the ground, while birdsong replaces any sense of urban distance.
📍 Location: Dartington Hall Estate, Devon
🌸 Known for: Hidden valley garden, rhododendron blooms, estate landscape design
🌿 Highlights: Blue footbridge, seasonal flowering in May, woodland ravine scenery
💡 Travel tip: Go in late spring — especially May — when rhododendrons peak and the valley is at its most vivid and layered.
The Valley Garden is not a place you simply pass through.
It is a place you slowly discover — step by step, bloom by bloom, deeper into silence and color.

Totnes christmas market
Totnes was a beautiful and quirky little town we visited. So many independent little shops selling things such as vintage clothing, jewellery and crystals. We was lucky enough to go on the day of christmas market which was so pretty and lovely. As a vegetarian they has plenty of food options like burgers and kebabs and even better the actual bakeries in totnes had plenty of options too such as a delicious hot vegan sausage roll. My bf, who is a meat eater had plenty of options but ultimately decided on a nacho bowl loaded with doner kebab and plenty of toppings. Despite there being plenty of sweet treat options such as cookie pies, doughnuts and brownies i decided on a nutella crepe which was jam packed with chocolate and delicious! If you have the chance to go definitely do it even if you go charity shopping and for a nice pub meal it’s worth it! #totnes

♻️An eco-friendly shopping experience that gives you a taste of the future✊🏻❤️🔥
Totnes's supermarket situation (British countryside)
Totnes, a small town in the southwest of England, is known as the world's first transition town and is a sustainable-oriented town🌱
The supermarkets there are also a little different, making it a must-see spot for self-catering travelers and eco-conscious people!
All the organic supermarkets in the town center are plastic-free and specialize in bulk sales, with nuts, grains, spices, and detergent all sold by weight, and the basic style is to bring your own containers✨
It's convenient to have cloth bags and empty bottles on hand while traveling.
There is less packaged food, so you can shop smartly and eco-friendly without waste.
Local organic vegetables are also lined up, so you can enjoy a locally produced and locally consumed diet.
The entire town values an ecological approach, so you may even get some hints on how to live during your trip♪

[UK🇬🇧] A bookstore in a small town
One of my goals for my trip to the UK was to visit Schumacher College.
While searching for books by the professors there, I stumbled upon this tiny bookstore! It's more than just a bookstore; it's a multi-purpose space, as described on their website:
(Accessed January 2024)
This multifaceted space not only serves as a ticket office and information hub for Dartington Trust's many art and ecology courses, live music events, Barn Cinema screenings, talks, and more, but also as home to a carefully curated selection of beautiful artefacts, art prints, and other artifacts. And of course, in keeping with the space's heritage, the store also stocks a fantastic selection of books.
If you're ever in Totnes, UK, why not stop by this bookstore? 📕✨

[UK🇬🇧] A small bulk shop
I went on a study abroad and travel trip to Totnes, a small town just four hours by train from London. 🇬🇧
Totnes is a tiny town with a population of 8,000 in Devon, West England. Located about four hours by train from London, it's famous as the birthplace of the Transition Town movement!
Transition means "transition" or "change." The "Transition Movement," a grassroots initiative that aims to "enjoyably" transition from a lifestyle heavily dependent on fossil fuels like oil to one that significantly reduces their use, began in this town in 2006. This movement has now spread worldwide. This small town of about 8,000 people is its birthplace. A wide range of initiatives are underway, including the issuance of local currency, the promotion of local production and consumption, and the establishment of resident businesses.
In fact, this store also had a wide selection of bulk and organic fruits and vegetables, making for a healthy stay. 😊

[England] Celebrating Sunday with traditional Morris dancing 🎶
Morris dance, a traditional British dance, is one of the British spring scenes.
On the way to Schumacher College (graduate school) on this day, I encountered a group of Morris dancers in the center of Totnes, a small village in the southwest of England. 🫶
This traditional British dance is said to have originated in the 15th century, and was banned in the 17th century by Cromwell, the leader of the Puritan Revolution, but was lifted and revived by the Restoration of the Monarchy under Charles II.
It is said that it became popular in various places in the 20th century with the folk revival.
It seems that wearing bells on the knees and hats is common, but the way of dancing and costumes seem to differ from region to region, like the Bon Odori in Japan.
The dancers on this day were dressed in white costumes and held white handkerchiefs in their hands. Apparently, in some regions they held swords or wooden sticks instead of handkerchiefs. 😊
