While hunting, he was enchanted by the forests, hills and lakes and chose the spot for his new seat. Another legend credits **Biruta**, a pagan priestess and later the wife of Prince **Kęstutis**. She supposedly disliked her dry surroundings, so the lovestruck prince built her a castle on an island, surrounded entirely by water. ⭐ Historical records confirm that the castle was built on the initiative of Princes **Kęstutis** and **Vytautas**, so Biruta may indeed have inspired it 😉 ⭐ Stone served as the primary building material—the foundations and lower walls were built of fieldstone, while the upper sections, stairs and decorations were made of red brick.
