Province of Siena travel guide and discussion

If Florence is the cradle of the Renaissance, Siena is Italy's ultimate medieval time capsule. From the moment you catch a glimpse of its iconic skyline, dominated by terracotta roofs, the soaring Torre del Mangia, and the magnificent Duomo, you know you are exploring somewhere truly special. All roads in Siena seemingly lead to Piazza del Campo. This unique, wide, shell-shaped square is the beating heart of the city and the site of the famous Palio horse race. Standing in the center and looking up at the towering brick facade of the Palazzo Pubblico and its elegant bell tower is a truly humbling experience. You cannot visit Siena without exploring its cathedral. The Duomo di Siena features a striking black and white striped marble facade that will leave you speechless . But the beauty isn't just on the outside. The city is filled with historic interiors adorned with vibrant, floor-to-ceiling frescoes and incredibly detailed floors that showcase magnificent artistry. The best way to experience Siena is to simply get lost in its narrow, winding streets. You'll stumble upon massive brick basilicas towering over the paved alleys and beautiful historic squares like Piazza Salimbeni, home to stunning architecture and classic statues. 💡 Essential Tips for Your Siena Adventure: · Wear Comfortable Shoes: The steep, paved medieval streets and alleys require good footwear. · Explore the Squares: Make sure to visit the historic Piazza Salimbeni, characterized by its beautiful statues and facades. · Relax in the Campo: Do as the locals do—sit right on the sloping brick floor of Piazza del Campo and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Have you ever visited a city that made you feel like you traveled centuries back in time? San Quirico serves as the quiet hinge between Pienza and Montalcino. I stopped here for exactly one hour: parked for free on Via Dante, and walked into Horti Leonini—a free, 16th-century walled garden featuring geometric box hedges, a single cypress avenue, and a stone bench shaded by trees where I enjoyed a panino (€5 from the local tabacchi). Just 200 meters away stands La Collegiata—a Romanesque-Gothic church offering free entry, stunning 12th-century capitals inside, no tickets, and no queues. Securing that bench along the cypress avenue is the ultimate move: 20 minutes of pure relaxation, zero euros spent, and the uninterrupted silence of Val d’Orcia. Mistake: I once only budgeted 20 minutes and ended up rushing; San Quirico truly rewards an unhurried hour—the garden may be small, but the light beautifully shifts every 10 minutes. Another mistake: visiting on a Monday—the only café on the corso was closed, so be sure to carry water and a snack. Worth it? Absolutely yes, for €0 plus the cost of a panino. San Quirico is the anti-Pienza: no grand palaces, no cheese flights needed, just a pristine hedge garden and a quiet bench. Question: in a valley filled with paid palaces and wine tastings, is a free 1-hour garden bench the most authentic Val d’Orcia experience—or does skipping the ticketed stops mean you missed the point?

Some places feel like a painting, and Tuscany is one of them. #sunsetplaces The classic Tuscan sunset is the cypress-lined ridge south of Pienza — drive the SP146 from Pienza toward San Quirico, park at the "Belvedere di Pienza" pull-off (free, 24/7, no permit needed), and walk 200m south along the gravel verge to the unnamed bend where three cypresses stand on a crest. I cycled from Pienza (bike rental €15/day, cash at the shop) at 6:30 p.m. in early October (sunset 6:50). The Val d'Orcia unfolded: rolling wheat stubble the color of old gold, the Crete Senesi clay hills going violet, and the cypress spines cutting black filigree against a sky that moved from butter to plum in 20 minutes. A €3 panino with cinta senese at a Pienza deli earlier. Mistake: driving the SP146 at 5 p.m. in July — tour buses, zero parking, the ridge is a traffic jam. Another: standing at the official belvedere — the real shot is 150m south on foot where the road curves. Rule: don't step into the wheat field (private, farmer will honk); no drone without a Scarperia permit (€50+ and a month lead); close the farm gates. Opinion: Pienza's cypress ridge is the most photographed sunset in Italy, and it still earns it — because the hills actually do look like that, not just in postcards. Discussion: when a landscape is famous for looking like itself, does the repetition make it less real or just more confirmed?

Let’s take a virtual leap to three inspiring spots that blend tropical vibes with Tuscan daydreams 🌞✈️ This lively trio covers Miyazaki City (Japan’s secret coast!), magical Marawila in Sri Lanka, and Tuscany’s storybook Pienza—each one pretty much designed for those plog-worthy, wanderlust-inducing moments! Top Spots to Visit: Miyazaki City — Devil’s Washboard (13 Aoshima, Miyazaki, 889-2162, Japan) Open all day! These crazy-cool, ribbed rock formations are legendary at sunrise for moody photos. Bring comfy shoes; the rocks can be slippery. Bonus: Pack a picnic and use the free beach public restrooms nearby—Japanese beach serenity, unlocked. Pienza, Tuscany — (53026 Pienza, Province of Siena, Italy) Live out your “Under the Tuscan Sun” fantasy 🤌 This UNESCO gem is all golden stone and melt-in-your-mouth pecorino cheese. Early summer is unreal—fewer crowds, tons of wildflowers, and the piazza is pure charm, ideal for lazy morning strolls and coffee breaks. Wander freely—most gems are tucked in side alleys, and the city’s bite-size! (Marawila is perfect for sunset walks and chill local seafood, just let the slow pace soak in and don’t rush the magic.) Getting Around: Japan’s local buses or a rental bike are your best bet for Miyazaki. In Tuscany, renting a small car is the way to win at scenery—just watch those winding roads! Food Tips: In Pienza, try the local pecorino cheese at a sidewalk café—don’t skip the honey drizzle! In Miyazaki, look for fresh seafood at Aoshima’s market stalls (cash is king). Early summer sweet spot: pack layers—Tuscany mornings are cool, afternoons warm! 📸 #Tuscany #Italy #EuropeanTravel #Travelvlog #plog #mytravelwrap

Siena isn’t a city that demands attention—it earns it quietly. Every narrow alley, weathered brick, and centuries-old square tells a story that has survived the passage of time. As daylight fades, the streets become even more captivating, revealing a different kind of beauty that feels both peaceful and unforgettable. There’s something special about wandering without a destination here, letting history, architecture, and the rhythm of the city guide each step. Some places impress you while you’re there; Siena stays with you long after you’ve left. 🇮🇹✨

Early summer wanderlust led me to the sun-kissed cliffs of Miyazaki and the poetic hills of Tuscany — two soul-soothing stops you’ll want to keep on your mood board 🌻✨ Here’s how you can capture major travel feels in Miyazaki City (Japan) and Pienza (Italy). Top Spots to Visit 🌊 Devil’s Washboard (Miyazaki City, Japan) · Address: 13 Aoshima, Miyazaki, 889-2162, Japan · Open: All day, all year round Walk the unique volcanic rock formations that stretch out into the sea — seriously photogenic, especially at sunrise or sunset. Hot tip: Wear comfortable shoes; those rocks are slippery when damp! 🏞️ Pienza (Tuscany, Italy) · Address: 53026 Pienza, Province of Siena, Italy · Open: All day, all year round Lose yourself in this dreamy Renaissance town, nestled in classic Tuscan countryside. Get lost in winding lanes perfumed by blooming gardens and sample the famous pecorino cheese in local shops. My pro tip: Sunrise here is all golden light — amazing for peaceful moments (& your plog!). Travel Tips & Food Fix · In Miyazaki, rent a bicycle for easy exploring along the coastline, or hop local buses if you’re tired (contactless cards are widely accepted!). · In Pienza, walking is king — bring light layers, as Tuscan weather changes fast. Grab fresh panini at a deli or a scoop of sheep’s milk gelato. · Both cities: cash is useful but cards are increasingly accepted. No visas needed if you’re doing short tourist stays from many countries (always double-check before you go!). #Tuscany #Italy #EuropeanTravel #TravelVlog #plog #mytravelwrap

Stroll through the World Heritage site of Pienza, an ideal Renaissance town. The old town is built of stone, and the Val d'Orcia greets you the moment you open your window. Quiet, winding streets, rolling hills in the distance, and cypress trees, farmhouses, and sprawling fields unfold like an oil painting. The ancients' vision of a perfect city is half-hidden in its architecture and half-returned to the wild landscape. The gentleness of Tuscany is all here. [Glister]Must-visit attractions: [CityDusk]Piazza Pio II: The geometric heart of the town, surrounded by Renaissance masterpieces like the Cathedral and Palazzo Piccolomini. The ground is paved with herringbone cobblestones, creating a highly artistic feel. [Mosque]Palazzo Piccolomini: The palace of Pope Pius II, designed by architect Bernardo Rossellino. Its three-tiered loggia garden facade offers a panoramic view of the magnificent Val d'Orcia. Admission is approximately €7. [ClassicArch]Pienza Cathedral: Located on the south side of the main square, it features a simple and elegant exterior. The interior houses early Renaissance sculptures and frescoes, and the marble altar is of high artistic value. [GreatWall]Chapel Vitaleta: Although not in the town of Pienza, it is located on the way to Pienza (between San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza). It is an iconic landmark of the Val d'Orcia, named for the cypress trees on both sides that resemble ears.

Hey everyone! Today, I'm taking you on a virtual tour of an incredible medieval treasure—San Gimignano! ✨ Located in Tuscany, Italy, it is one of the best-preserved medieval hill towns in Europe! 📜 Records date back to the 10th century. With a thousand years of history, its most glorious period was from the 12th to the 14th century—it's got that authentic "old money" aristocratic vibe! 💎 And the best part? The towers! 🏗️ Back then, there were as many as 72 towers in the city, all built by wealthy merchants and nobles to show off their status—the taller the tower, the more powerful the family. They were in a crazy competition, effectively creating a "medieval Manhattan" skyline! 🌆 Although only about 14 remain today, the tallest one (about 54 meters) is still incredibly imposing and perfect for taking stunning photos! 📸 Why is it so well-preserved? Haha, it's actually because it "declined" later on! The Black Death in 1348 hit it hard, causing the population and economy to collapse. Afterward, it was controlled by Florence and didn't have the chance to undergo major demolition or reconstruction. It was a blessing in disguise, as the medieval streets, squares, walls, houses, and towers were preserved exactly as they were! It's truly amazing! 😭 Walking through it now, with its narrow stone alleys, ancient walls, medieval squares, churches, noble mansions, and towering stone towers... you'll feel like you've traveled back several hundred years! In 1990, its historic center was designated a World Heritage Site! 🎉 Even better, just outside the city walls is the classic Tuscan hilly landscape—vineyards, olive trees, cypress trees, and ancient farmhouses. Every photo you take looks like a postcard! 🍇🌿 To sum up its charm in one sentence: Inside the walls, it's a medieval world preserved for 700 years; 🏰 Outside the walls, it's the most classic Tuscan countryside. 🌄 The pictures also include views of the mountain castle in the mist. At sunrise, the light and shadows are stunning, creating an incredible atmosphere! 🌫️☀️ If you love history, architecture, and pastoral scenery, this place is definitely worth a visit! 💯

My first glimpse of Tuscany began with a small road lined with cypress trees. The road is narrow, winding slowly along the rolling hills. Cypress trees stand one after another on both sides, straight and tall amidst the fields, as if someone had intentionally drawn clear lines across the countryside. In the distance, rolling green hills stretch out; as the sunlight falls, the meadows and wheat fields are painted in varying shades of gold. The houses here are simple. A modest stone farmhouse with a terracotta roof, its exterior walls weathered by the wind and sun into warm hues. There isn't much decoration by the windows, yet it always makes you imagine a wooden table, an old lamp, and a lunch that you're in no rush to finish inside. In one photo, an old car drives slowly along a country road. The car is small, the road is long, and the cypress grove behind it stretches into the distance. At that moment, Tuscany doesn't feel like a travel destination where you have to pack your itinerary; it feels more like a place where you can just drive, stopping whenever you see something beautiful. In the early morning, mist rises from the valley, half-shrouding the houses, trees, and distant fields. Sunlight pierces through the mist, making the farmhouses look like islands floating on clouds. By evening, the setting sun bathes the entire landscape in a soft golden-brown, and even the shadows seem to slow down. The most moving part of Tuscany isn't any single building or a must-visit attraction. It's those recurring scenes: a row of cypress trees, a farmhouse, a dirt road, a field illuminated by sunlight. They look simple, yet they make you want to keep looking. If I had to choose one keyword for Tuscany, I think it would be "relaxed." There are no people rushing here, and no checklists that must be completed. You only need to sit on a country terrace, watch the wind blow across the grass, watch the shadows of the clouds move slowly, and wait for a car to pass by in the distance. Some places make you excited; others make you quiet. Tuscany belongs to the latter.

My rating for Siena Cathedral as a must-visit place in the Province of Siena is an enthusiastic 5—this attraction is absolutely deserving of its top position! 😍 The experience here transcends generations, with its breathtaking marble art and rooftop panoramas that captivate everyone. Walking through the Siena Cathedral, I was genuinely stunned by the zebra-striped marble, and the vibrant Piccolomini Library, both of which left lasting impressions. The sweeping rooftop terrace views were truly the highlight, offering an unforgettable Tuscan vista that makes this cathedral an icon of Siena. Basic info checks out: Siena Cathedral is located at Piazza del Duomo, 8, 53100 Siena SI, Italy and the reported operating hours (10:00 AM–7:00 PM, with admission ending at 6:30 PM) were accurate during my visit. I highly recommend going in the morning for the best light and a more serene atmosphere. Practical tips: Book the Opa Si Pass on Trip.com to speed through entry for not just the cathedral but also Museo dell’Opera and the Facciatone viewpoint. Grab your physical tickets early to skip morning queues. Download a Rick Steves audio tour for engaging, self-guided insights. Take your time on the spiral climb up to the Facciatone—sometimes there's a short wait, but the panoramic views over Siena and the Tuscan hills are worth every second! Photo spot tip: The charming medieval stone alleyways lined with vibrant Palio banners make for magical selfies as you approach the sunlit Gothic facade—just follow the banners directly to the cathedral! #tripbest #tripbest _reviewer

Nestled in Chiusdino, Tuscany, the Abbey of San Galgano (Abbazia di San Galgano) is a legendary medieval site long hailed as one of Europe’s most romantic and mysterious ruins—a true paradise for photographers. Its most striking feature is its lack of a roof; with only the towering walls framing the blue sky and sunlight against the backdrop of rolling green hills, it creates a breathtaking scene that requires absolutely no filters. Suggested Route Since it’s off the beaten path, driving yourself or hiring a car is recommended (the 1-hour drive from the city is scenic). Once there, take a leisurely stroll around the perimeter. Upon entering through the main doors, pause in the nave to look up at the interplay of light and shadow within the roofless ruins. Walk past the columns to admire the architectural details that whisper tales of former grandeur and present-day weathered beauty. Must-See Photo Spots 1. The Great Roofless Nave: The ultimate photo spot. Whether at noon or dusk, the sunlight hitting the floor creates a divine atmosphere. Shooting from the front toward the center captures the Renaissance aesthetic of the arched walls. 2. The Arched Windows: A classic shot is leaning against a window frame looking out over the lush greenery—pure cinematic magic! 3. Rotonda di Montesiepi: Just a 5-minute walk away, this small chapel houses the legendary sword in the stone of Saint Galgano. It’s a chance to explore a real-life version of the Excalibur myth. Travel Tips · Opening Hours (May-Oct 9:00-19:00; July-Aug weekends until 20:00; Nov-Apr 9:00-18:00). Visiting at dusk is recommended for the quietest and most beautiful atmosphere. · Avoid weekends and tour bus peaks for a more serene experience. · In summer, bring plenty of water and a hat, as the site offers no shade. · The ground is uneven and covered in gravel; wear comfortable sneakers for a much easier walk. · Nearby dining is limited, so bring snacks or plan to eat in the town of Chiusdino afterward. Important Notes · Please respect the site by not touching the ruins. · There is an admission fee; bring cash or check current payment methods in advance. · During peak season, art exhibitions or music festivals may be held here, so check online for the latest schedule before you go.

As one of the top 10 most popular attractions in the Province of Siena, the core experience of the Historic Center is truly exceptional. It deserves high marks for both its breathtaking natural landscapes and its perfectly preserved historical and cultural atmosphere. Its reasons for making the top list are spot on, fully showcasing the unique charm of the old town. After my visit, I would highly recommend friends to experience it for themselves. I was especially blown away by Pienza, which is even more beautiful than I imagined. Combined with the elegant "old money" vibe exuded by the surrounding wineries, every step of the walk offers a delightful surprise! The basic details and operating hours are accurate. The old town is open 24/7, making it incredibly easy to fit into any itinerary. I highly suggest visiting in the afternoon—the lighting, the scenery, and the crowds are all just right for an optimal experience. A personal insider tip: Walk all the way to the very end of Pienza's main street. Turn left for a must-try gelato shop that tastes absolutely divine; turn right to reach the city walls, where you can capture the back of the church against the picturesque Tuscan countryside. It's super photogenic 👍🏻. _reviewer

Nestled among the mountains and vineyards of Tuscany lies Monteriggioni, an ancient city that seems to have stepped out of a medieval film. Compared to popular cities like Florence and Siena, Monteriggioni is much more understated, thus preserving its purest medieval atmosphere. As the car approaches the hills, a complete city wall encircles the town, with 14 towers neatly arranged atop it, resembling a fortress guarded by ancient knights. This city avoids the crowds of major tourist attractions and complicated itineraries. The best way to experience it is to slow down, step through the city gates, and feel the tranquility of an 800-year-old military fortress. ⸻ 🛡️ A Medieval Fortress Born of War Monteriggioni was built in the early 13th century by the Republic of Siena to defend against Florentine influence. Unlike many castles that gradually developed into large cities, Monteriggioni was a military outpost from the beginning. The entire city is surrounded by intact walls: 🏰 Circular defensive walls 🗼 14 well-preserved towers 🚪 Ancient city gate entrance Stepping inside, one is immediately enveloped in a strong medieval atmosphere. The Italian poet Dante even described Monteriggioni's towers in his *Divine Comedy* as a colossal giant encircling the city. ⸻ 📸 Must-see attractions ⭐️ City Wall Walk (Camminamento sulle Mura) If you could only do one thing in Monteriggioni, it would definitely be: Climb the city walls and take a walk. Standing on the city walls, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view: 🌿 The rolling hills of Tuscany 🍇 Vineyards and olive groves 🏰 The complete inner city of the castle 🌅 The valley towards Siena in the distance Unlike popular tourist spots where you have to queue for the best angle, here you can quietly enjoy your own medieval scenery. Especially at sunset, when the golden sunlight shines between the stone walls and the countryside, it's the best time for photos. ⸻ 🏰 The castle entrance and Piazza Roma After passing through the ancient city gate, you'll see: Piazza Roma (Roman Square) This is the heart of the town. The square is small, with a simple yet elegant church in the center: ⛪ Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta Surrounding it are stone houses, restaurants, and small shops. Sitting by the square with a coffee, watching residents chat and tourists stroll leisurely, you'll experience the true Italian small-town life. ⸻ 🎬 A Town Like Stepping into a Game or Movie Scene Many people feel a strong sense of familiarity upon first seeing Monteriggioni. This is because its well-preserved castle exterior frequently inspires historical films, games, and photographic works. Especially appealing to those who appreciate: ⚔️ Medieval History 🏰 Castle Architecture 🎮 Ancient Civilization Game Scenes 📸 Unique Travel Photography Walking beneath the city walls, gazing at the towering towers and stone streets, it's easy to feel transported back to the age of knights. ⸻ 🍝 Town Food and Slow-Paced Life Monteriggioni, though small, is perfect for a leisurely lunch. Recommended Dishes: 🍝 Handmade Pasta 🥩 Tuscan Stew 🧀 Cheese and Cold Cuts Platter 🍷 Chianti Wine 🍦 Italian Gelato Instead of seeking upscale restaurants, this area is better suited for finding a small shop with outdoor seating and enjoying a slow lunch by the ancient city walls. ⸻ 🚍 Transportation From Siena 🚌 Approximately 30 minutes by bus Suitable for a half-day trip around Siena. From Florence 🚆 Train to Poggibonsi ⬇️ 🚌 Transfer to bus Approximately 1.5-2 hours. If you're planning a day trip to Tuscany, these itineraries are perfect for connecting the following: 📍 Siena 📍 San Gimignano 📍 Monteriggioni This creates a classic medieval town route. ⸻ 📌 Travel Tips ✅ Monteriggioni is very small; you can walk through it in about 1-2 hours, but it's recommended not to rush. ✅ Entrance to the city walls requires a ticket; it's best to visit on a sunny day. ✅ The town's streets are mostly cobblestone, so comfortable shoes are recommended. ✅ The afternoon sun is strong in summer, and there's little shade on the city walls, so remember to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. ✅ If you're driving, there's parking outside the city; walking into the old town is the most convenient option. ⸻ ❤️ Why is Monteriggioni worth visiting? The charm of San Gimignano lies in its towers and touristy atmosphere; the charm of Siena lies in its history and city scale; while the charm of Monteriggioni lies in its ability to truly make you feel like you've stepped into a medieval castle. There are no throngs of shops, no hurried crowds. Only stone walls, towers, vineyards, and the Tuscan sunshine. If you're looking for a truly fairytale-like town on your Tuscan trip, Monteriggioni is definitely worth including. ⸻ #Monteriggioni #Monterriggioni #TuscanyTravel #TuscanyTravel #ItalianOldTown #MedievalCastle #ItalyTravel #ItalianTown

Skip the crowded Florence and spend a week immersing yourself in a self-drive through the Tuscan hills and valleys. Vast golden wheat fields, rows of cypress-lined roads, and scattered ancient stone castles in the hills, all wrapped in the aroma of olives and grapes. ✅ Must-visit spots 1. The Little Ear Church in Val d'Orcia, where sunset light creates a divine scene—perfect as a wallpaper straight from the original photo. 2. Pienza hill town, climb to the top for a panoramic view of the entire countryside. 3. Chianti winery, taste local red wine and handmade truffle pasta. 4. San Gimignano, climb the ancient tower and savor some of the world’s top gelato.

If the grandeur of Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) leaves you in awe, then the adjacent Cathedral Museum (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo) is the true hidden treasure trove of art. Here, many precious original works removed from the cathedral are collected, featuring masterpieces by great artists such as Duccio, Donatello, and Giovanni Pisano, as well as powerful religious relics. Even more importantly, after your visit, you can climb the Facciatone to overlook the entire city of Siena and the rolling hills of Tuscany—definitely worth setting aside ample time. 🎨 Must-See Masterpieces ✨ Duccio’s "Maestà" The most stunning piece in the gallery is the unparalleled masterpiece by Duccio, the master of the Sienese School. The front depicts the Madonna and Child crowned in glory with saints (top cover image), while the back delicately narrates the Passion of Christ through dozens of scenes (bottom cover image). The gold leaf background shines softly in the light, serene and solemn, representing the pinnacle of medieval painting. 👁️ The Original Rose Window from 700 Years Ago The famous colorful rose window in the center of the cathedral was also created by Duccio. Inside the cathedral, you can only admire it from afar, but in the museum, you can appreciate the color and detail of each piece of glass up close. When sunlight filters through the red, blue, and gold stained glass, it feels as if the light from 700 years ago is shining before your eyes again. 🗿 Giovanni Pisano’s Sculptural Group These lively and sharply contoured statues of prophets and saints originally stood on the cathedral’s exterior facade. Giovanni Pisano gave astonishing life to the cold marble; each statue is full of dramatic tension, as if it might speak at any moment. 🐺 Siena’s City Emblem—The She-Wolf and Twins The "Lupa Senese" (She-Wolf Nursing Twins) is Siena’s most iconic city symbol, visible throughout the city. According to local legend, Siena was founded by Aschius and Senius, sons of Romulus, the founder of Rome. Thus, the she-wolf nursing the twins became a spiritual totem passed down through generations in this city. 🕊️ Donatello’s Gentle Relief The circular marble relief "Madonna of Forgiveness" was created by Renaissance sculptor Donatello. The expressions of the Madonna and Child are gentle and restrained, with delicate, flowing drapery and soft features that perfectly embody the humanistic spirit of the Renaissance. 💀 The Mysterious Ritual Under Golden Light: The Reliquary of a Saint’s Skull Besides the well-known masterpieces, the gallery also houses a striking exhibit. The golden reliquary, adorned with exquisite gold and silver craftsmanship and crystal decorations, quietly holds the skull of a saint. This is a unique medieval Catholic relic worship practice: the saint’s bones are enshrined in a carefully crafted reliquary, serving as an important medium for believers to pray for miracles and protection. Standing before it, you see not only superb goldsmith artistry but also feel the era’s understanding of faith, death, and eternal life. The dazzling gold alongside the white bones creates a powerful visual contrast, becoming the most profound symbol of Siena’s religious culture. 🧱 Hidden Route: Climb the Facciatone After visiting the museum, don’t miss climbing the narrow spiral staircase up to the Facciatone (entrance shown in photo 19). In the 14th century, Siena planned to expand the cathedral to become the largest in Europe. However, the Black Death halted construction, leaving only this unfinished massive facade. Today, it has become Siena’s most iconic viewing platform. From this height, you can see the entire Piazza del Campo, the Torre del Mangia, the red-tiled roofs, and the rolling Tuscan hills. It’s one of the best spots to enjoy a panoramic view of Siena. 💡 Practical Tips 🎫 Tickets: It’s recommended to buy the Opa Si Pass, which includes the cathedral, library, baptistery, crypt, and cathedral museum, offering the best value. 📷 Photo Spots: Duccio’s rose window, the sculpture gallery, and the Facciatone archway are all excellent locations for capturing vintage artistic photos.

This Church of Saints Vito and Modesto (Pieve dei Santi Vito e Modesto) is located in Pienza. It is a simple Romanesque building. Climbing up this church allows you to stand on the balcony and enjoy the rustic countryside style that Pienza presents at sunset. The cylindrical bell tower next to the entrance is its most prominent landmark, with a history possibly dating back to the 11th century, older than the church itself. The main structure was built in the 12th century. The facade is decorated with a simple design featuring a portal below and double windows above. The side door is carved with scenes of the "Pilgrimage of the Three Wise Men" and the "Nativity of Jesus." The most unique historical mark of this church is its simple original baptismal font on the right side of the interior. Two future popes were baptized here:

If you ask me what the most iconic image of Tuscany is, it has to be the rows of Cypress trees lining the roads like guardian spirits. 🌲✨ We specifically chose to visit during the evening, when the golden hour sunlight draped over the rolling hills, painting the entire landscape in a dreamy golden hue (Pic 8). Stroll through medieval towns where cobblestone streets wind and twist, and red brick walls are smoothed by time. Daydream in Siena’s Piazza del Campo, watching the sunlight slowly move; climb high in San Gimignano to take in the entire countryside; step into a century-old winery to savor a rich red wine paired with local cheese and ham—the taste on your tongue is sunshine itself.
