But Japan is so vast that you can almost always find a place with a similar vibe, but without the thousands of people around ✨ In this post, I've compiled my favorite alternatives: ⛩️ Instead of Fushimi Inari, there's Kifune Shrine. Same red torii, but the atmosphere is much calmer. ⛩️ As an alternative to Hie Shrine in Tokyo and Ukiha Inari in Fukuoka Prefecture, the torii literally descend from the hill overlooking the valley! 🎨 Instead of the Benesse Museum on Naoshima, there's the Teshima Art Museum on the neighboring island. Honestly, that's the one that impressed me the most. 🦍 Instead of Godzilla in Shinjuku, there's the huge King Kong in Shimokitazawa. Unexpected, but very photogenic. 🦌 Instead of Nara's deer, there are Miyajima's deer. They're much calmer, and the surrounding area boasts one of Japan's most beautiful views. 🗿 Instead of Kamakura's Buddha, there's the 120-meter Ushiku Daibutsu, just two hours from Tokyo. 🏯 Instead of Osaka Castle, there's Himeji Castle. The original 17th-century castle has been preserved here, not a post-war reconstruction. 🗻 Instead of Lake Kawaguchiko, there's Lake Motosu. This very view of Mount Fuji is depicted on the 1,000 yen bill. Of course, this doesn't mean popular places are bad. On the contrary, most of them have become famous for a reason. #February Destinations 2026 Looking up from the plains, the red torii gates of Ukiha Inari Shrine resemble a quiet yet powerful dragon, stretching layer upon layer along the hillside, passing through countryside, fields, and withered grass swaying in the wind, and also through people's long-held prayers for life. Standing in the center of the torii gate steps, the vast view of the Chikugo Plain unfolds before you, while beneath your feet lies the path of faith, simple yet awe-inspiring. This is not a bustling tourist shrine, but rather a place of protection for the local residents. The three main deities enshrined at the shrine are also very close to the lives of ordinary people: the first is Fushimi Inari Okami, symbolizing prosperous commerce, abundant harvests, and safe travels; the second is Oyama Zakumi of Matsuo Taisha Shrine in Kyoto, protecting sake brewing, health, and longevity; and the third is Sugawara no Michizane of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, protecting learning and adult growth. Starting the day from Beppu and heading towards Fukuoka, we enjoyed a leisurely pace with stops along the way. First stop in the morning was Tomonaga Bakery for freshly baked bread! Then, we tried the Jigoku Steamed Pudding at Okamotoya (honestly, I didn’t find it tasty 😌). For lunch, we had udon at Fudoan, which was so delicious that even an extra serving wasn’t enough! Located in a slightly remote area rather than the town center, you’ll need a rental car, bicycle, or taxi to get there. 🏠 The exterior looks like a converted traditional Japanese home, and as you pass through the charming entrance, you’ll find a variety of seating options, including floor seating, bar tables, and terrace seats. They even have high chairs for babies, making it a convenient spot for families 👶. 📜 The menu is simple with just five options: Kake Udon, Kitsune Udon, Niku Udon, Yudame Udon, and Bukkake Udon. The tempura sets are especially popular! 🦐🍗 You can choose between the "Ukiha Set" (vegetable-focused) and the "Fudoan Set" (shrimp + chicken). I ordered the refreshing Bukkake Udon, Kitsune Udon with fish cake, and the Fudoan Tempura Set. The chewy texture of the udon noodles was absolutely amazing 🤤. Paired with soft-boiled egg tempura and shrimp tempura, it was so delicious that I ended up ordering two more shrimp tempuras, haha.

This time, I went to visit Shiseido's factory in Ukiha, which is about an hour and a half by car from Fukuoka city on public roads! Shiseido factory tours are only held at three factories in the country! One of them is in Fukuoka! I think it's worth visiting when you're traveling to Fukuoka!
