It was named after crew member William Hillier, who died during the expedition. Later, in 1889, salt mining was attempted here, but the project failed because the salt proved unfit for consumption. How did it get its colour? 🧪 The lake sits on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago, off the southern coast of Australia. Its water is 8 times saltier than the ocean and that high salinity creates the perfect conditions for microorganisms that turn the lake pink. In 2022, scientists from the Extreme Microbiome Project analysed the water and discovered the main "artists" are several species of microorganisms. Among them: the algae Dunaliella salina, which produces a red pigment to protect itself from the sun, and the bacterium Salinibacter ruber, which creates orange-red hues. Together, they create that unique palette. The biggest mystery: In other pink lakes, the colour changes with the seasons. But Lake Hillier stays the same shade of pink all year round and even if you pour it into a jar, it doesn't lose its colour. That makes it truly unique, even among other pink lakes. Sydney was one of those cities that looked familiar from photos, but felt completely different once I experienced it in person. Between the iconic harbour, beautiful beaches, historic neighbourhoods and relaxed outdoor lifestyle, I quickly understood why Sydney is one of Australia's most memorable cities. My first stop was the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Seeing them together from the waterfront was one of those moments where I actually stopped taking photos for a while and simply enjoyed the view. The harbour was full of ferries and boats, and the whole scene felt surprisingly peaceful despite being in the middle of a major city. One of my favorite experiences was walking around The Rocks afterwards. The old sandstone buildings and narrow streets created a completely different atmosphere from the modern city centre. I enjoyed wandering around without following a strict itinerary, discovering small shops, cafés and little corners with views back towards the harbour. Of course, I couldn't visit Sydney without spending some time at Bondi Beach. The atmosphere there was completely different—surfers in the water, people walking along the coast, and cafés filled with locals and visitors. I walked part of the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, and the combination of dramatic cliffs, ocean views and small beaches along the way was one of the highlights of my trip. 📍 My Sydney Travel Tips 🌉 Visit the Opera House & Harbour Bridge around late afternoon and stay until sunset. The changing light makes the harbour look completely different. 🚶 Explore The Rocks on foot. It's especially enjoyable in the morning when the streets are quieter. 🏖️ Spend some time at Bondi Beach, even if you're not planning to swim. 🥾 Try the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk if you enjoy walking and ocean scenery. Allow several hours if you want to stop for photos and explore along the way. ⛴️ Take a ferry across Sydney Harbour for a different perspective of the Opera House and skyline. 📸 Don't rush your photography stops. Some of my favorite photos came from simply waiting for the right light rather than visiting more places. ❤️ My Experience What I loved most about Sydney was the balance between city life and nature. In one day, I could walk through historic streets, admire world-famous architecture, take a ferry across the harbour and finish the afternoon beside the ocean. It never felt like I had to choose between an urban holiday and a beach getaway. Sydney also has a very relaxed outdoor atmosphere. People seemed to naturally spend time by the water, walking, running, surfing or simply sitting outside with a coffee. That lifestyle was one of the things I enjoyed most during my visit. If it's your first time in Australia, Sydney is a city I'd definitely recommend experiencing slowly. Don't just visit the famous landmarks, but leave some time to walk, take the ferry, explore the neighbourhoods and enjoy the harbour at sunset. If there's one road trip I would recommend doing from Melbourne, it's the Great Ocean Road. I had seen countless photos of the Twelve Apostles before going, but the actual journey turned out to be much more memorable than I expected. For me, the best part wasn't simply reaching the famous viewpoint—it was the entire drive along the dramatic coastline. I started the road trip from Melbourne early in the morning. The first few hours were a mix of coastal scenery, small seaside towns, green countryside and winding roads. Every time the ocean appeared between the trees, I found myself wanting to stop for another photo. One of my favorite stops was Lorne. I took a short break here, walked around the town and grabbed a coffee before continuing the drive. It was a nice reminder that the Great Ocean Road isn't something you should rush through. The small towns and viewpoints along the way are part of the experience. As I continued towards the western section of the route, the scenery became increasingly dramatic. Huge cliffs rose above the Southern Ocean, waves crashed against the rocks below, and the road seemed to disappear around every bend. 🌊 The Twelve Apostles The highlight of the trip was finally seeing the Twelve Apostles. I had seen them in photos many times, but standing on the viewing platform and seeing those enormous limestone stacks rising from the ocean was completely different. The wind was strong when I visited, and the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs made the whole landscape feel even more dramatic. I stayed longer than I originally planned, simply watching the ocean and taking photos from different viewpoints. And honestly, I think that's the best way to experience this place—don't arrive, take one photo and leave. A day trip is possible, but it's a long day, especially if you want to make several stops. 🌊 Don't only focus on the Twelve Apostles. Stops such as Lorne, Apollo Bay, Loch Ard Gorge and Gibson Steps make the journey much more interesting. ☕ Take breaks in the coastal towns. Lorne and Apollo Bay are great places to stop for coffee or lunch. 📸 Bring a wide-angle lens if you have one. The cliffs and ocean are difficult to capture in a single frame. 🌤️ Check the weather before leaving. Coastal weather can change quickly, and cloudy conditions can completely change the atmosphere. 🛏️ Consider staying overnight if you have enough time. It makes the journey much less rushed and allows you to explore more of the coastline. ❤️ My Experience What I loved most about the Great Ocean Road was the feeling of freedom. There was something special about driving with the ocean on one side and green hills on the other, stopping whenever a viewpoint caught my attention and not knowing what scenery would appear around the next corner. The Twelve Apostles may be the most famous attraction, but for me, the journey itself was the real highlight. If you're visiting Melbourne and have an extra day or two, I would definitely put the Great Ocean Road on your itinerary. Tasmania was one of those places that completely changed my idea of Australia. Before visiting, I imagined it would mainly be about mountains and wildlife, but once I arrived, I discovered a much more diverse landscape—rugged coastlines, crystal-clear beaches, dramatic mountains, peaceful lakes and charming little towns. What I loved most was how untouched many parts of Tasmania felt. I started my journey in Hobart, where I enjoyed the relaxed waterfront atmosphere and explored the city's historic streets. Compared with Melbourne and Sydney, Hobart felt much quieter, which was exactly what I wanted after spending time in bigger cities. From Hobart, I headed out to explore Tasmania's incredible natural scenery. 🌊 Freycinet National Park One of my favorite places was Freycinet National Park. The first time I saw Wineglass Bay from the lookout, I honestly couldn't believe the colors. The curved white beach, turquoise water and surrounding mountains created one of the most beautiful coastal views I've experienced in Australia. The hike to the lookout wasn't particularly long, but I definitely recommend wearing proper shoes and taking your time. I stayed at the viewpoint longer than expected because the scenery kept changing as the sunlight moved across the bay. 🏔️ Cradle Mountain Another highlight was Cradle Mountain. The landscape here felt completely different from the coastline. There were alpine trails, ancient forests, rocky peaks and peaceful lakes. Even though the weather changed quickly, that actually made the scenery feel even more dramatic. I remember standing beside Dove Lake with Cradle Mountain in the background. The water was incredibly calm, and for a few minutes there was almost complete silence. That was one of those travel moments that photographs simply can't fully capture. 🐧 Wildlife & Wild Coastlines Tasmania also surprised me with its wildlife. Depending on where you travel, you may encounter wallabies, wombats, echidnas and even little penguins. Seeing wildlife in a natural environment rather than behind glass was one of the experiences I appreciated most. The coastline was another highlight. Places like Bay of Fires offered completely different scenery again, with white sand, clear blue water and striking orange-red rocks along the coast. 📍 My Tasmania Travel Tips 🚗 Rent a car if possible. Tasmania is much easier to explore independently, especially if you want to visit national parks and remote coastal areas. 🥾 Bring proper hiking shoes. Even shorter trails can become muddy or slippery depending on the weather. 🌦️ Always check the weather before hiking. Conditions can change quickly, especially around Cradle Mountain. 🧥 Pack layers. Even during warmer months, mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cold. 📸 Allow extra time for photography. Tasmania is full of unexpected viewpoints, and rushing between attractions would be a shame. 🦘 Drive carefully at dawn and dusk. Wildlife can be active around roads, particularly outside the main towns. 🗺️ Don't try to see everything in a short trip. Tasmania looks manageable on a map, but driving between different regions takes time. ❤️ My Experience What stayed with me most about Tasmania wasn't one particular attraction. It was the feeling of space. There were moments when I was driving through empty roads with mountains in the distance, stopping beside a lake with nobody around, or standing on a beach listening to nothing but the waves. Tasmania felt slower, quieter and more raw than many other places I'd visited in Australia. If you're looking for a destination where you can combine road trips, hiking, wildlife, mountains, beaches and incredible scenery, Tasmania is somewhere I'd definitely recommend. Hi, guys! So, in this post, I want to share something genuinely personal about how my relationship with travel has evolved, because I think the experience I am about to describe is one that more people have had than openly talk about, and I am curious whether it resonates with you. I have spent the last few posts describing myself as a Nature Seeker, and that description is accurate and genuinely reflects how I approach most trips. Mountains, beaches, national parks, waterfalls, the further from urban density the better. That is my default setting, and it has been for as long as I can remember traveling with any real sense of what I was looking for. But here is something I have come to believe after enough trips to enough different kinds of places: the destinations that change us the most are rarely the ones that give us more of what we already know we love. They are the ones that introduce us to something we did not know we were missing. And for me, that destination was Australia. I arrived in Australia as a Nature Seeker with every intention of remaining one. Australia has the kind of natural environments that should make any Nature Seeker immediately and completely at home: the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Center, the dramatic coastlines, and the ancient and otherworldly landscapes of the outback. The natural credentials are extraordinary, and I was fully prepared to spend my time there chasing all of it. What actually happened was something I did not see coming and did not plan for. Australia's Aboriginal history and culture was the thing that first produced this shift in me, and I want to be honest that it happened partly because I was confronted with how little I actually knew. The more I learned, even in the relatively surface-level way that a visitor can learn during a short trip, the more I wanted to know. I found myself spending time in museums that I would normally have walked through quickly on the way to something outdoors. I found myself in conversations with locals that extended well beyond the usual tourist exchange. But it was not only the Aboriginal history that produced this transformation. It was Australia's broader cultural character, the specific and sometimes surprising way that this country has developed its own distinct identity from an extraordinarily diverse mix of influences and histories. The multicultural food scene that reflects waves of immigration across generations. Public art is integrated into urban environments in ways that make it part of daily life rather than confined to galleries. The sporting culture and what it reveals about community and collective identity. The way everyday Australians interact with each other and with visitors is genuinely open and unpretentious. Even the cafés, which in certain Australian cities have developed a coffee and hospitality culture that feels like a genuine local invention rather than an import. What about you, guys? After five days, the early experience was really hard to describe. But the crystal-clear sea and natural scenery here are truly top-notch. One unexpected favourite was the wombat. They're much bigger than I expected and somehow even cuter in real life. What impressed me most wasn't just the animals—it was the atmosphere. The entire zoo is filled with lush gardens, shady trees and winding walking paths, making it enjoyable even on warm days. It never felt overcrowded, and there were plenty of benches and picnic areas where families were relaxing under the trees. It felt more like strolling through a botanical garden than rushing between animal exhibits. That's when I realized a few small mistakes could have a big impact on the trip: 🦘 Underestimating distances On the map, everything seems close enough. In reality, Australia is huge. A day trip that looks simple can mean hours of driving, and flying between cities is often much more realistic than trying to do everything by road. ☀️ Thinking the sun is "just like everywhere else" One thing I noticed while living in Queensland was how quickly you can feel the sun. Even on cooler or cloudy days, UV levels can be extremely high. The classic spot with the Opera House and Harbor Bridge in one frame. The morning light is amazing; backlit silhouettes are legendary. · The Rocks weekend market: only open on weekends!
