They specialize in "farm-to-farm + North Sea seafood," offering affordable and authentic options. 1. Bike rental is €10/day, offering great freedom for exploring wetlands, fishing villages, and flower fields. · Public Transport: Intercity buses cost €3/trip, but services are infrequent, making cycling/driving less efficient. ⚠️ Tips to Avoid Pitfalls (Lessons Learned from Experience, Must Read) 1. Incredibly Strong Winds: Strong winds year-round. Bring a windproof jacket and hat, especially essential for cycling, otherwise you'll be blinded by the wind. 2. Unpredictable Weather: Dutch weather is unpredictable; carry a light raincoat. Sunny in the morning and rainy in the afternoon is common. 3. Book in Advance During Peak Season: June-August and tulip season (March-April) are peak seasons. Book accommodation and tickets to popular attractions one week in advance, otherwise, they will be fully booked. 4. Don't Just Explore the City: The essence of Flevoland lies in its countryside and nature. Wetlands, fishing villages, and farms are 10 times more worthwhile to explore than the cities. 5. If you’re craving all the coastal vibes and a side of legendary Dutch history, Katwijk aan Zee is calling your name! 👀🌊 For the ultimate beach stroll, you HAVE to check out its two timeless icons: the classic Vuurbaak Lighthouse and the super moving Fishermen’s Monument. Trust me, they’re both totally Insta-worthy and packed with feels! Let’s get into the details: 🗺️ The Coastal Legends You Can’t Miss 1. De Vuurbaak (Katwijk Lighthouse) Address: Noord Boulevard, 2225 Katwijk aan Zee, Netherlands Hours: Exterior always viewable Get ready to be wowed! Rising above the beach dunes, this white, square-brick “vuurbaak” (Dutch for lighthouse) has stood here since 1605 — seriously, this is the SECOND oldest lighthouse structure in the entire country! 🤩 For centuries, a giant coal fire on top of its roof led local fishing boats safely home each night. Now, it’s a postcard-perfect symbol of Katwijk’s deep maritime roots, just begging for a photo op. 2. Monument voor Omgekomen Zeelieden (“Als bladeren in de wind”) Address: Noord Boulevard, right beside the lighthouse This monument totally hits you in the feels. Designed by Gerard van der Leeden, its wavy rusted steel panels look just like windswept sails or pages blowing in a storm. 😭 Etched into the metal are the names of nearly 300 fishermen from Katwijk who went out to sea from 1919 to 2000 and never returned. Newer bricks set into the street honor more recent names. It’s a super moving spot to pause and reflect. ✨ Pro Tips for the Dreamy Sunset Stroll Best Vibes: Hit up the boulevard in late afternoon when the light is pure golden hour magic. The white lighthouse GLOWS and the monument’s cutout names throw dramatic, moody shadows that look unreal in photos. 📸 Relax Max: The plaza in front is lined with benches where you can just CHILL as the sea breeze does its thing. Northern Noord Boulevard is way quieter than Katwijk’s bustlin' central beach, so you’ll feel legit peace and maybe even have the whole sunset POV to yourself. Snack & Sip: When you’re done soaking up vibes, wander over to the main square (Andreasplein) for some crispy, fresh kibbeling at Vis aan Zae (seriously, it’s sooo good! 🐟). Want coffee? Head to Princestraat for cozy artisan vibes at Winkel-Café Roos — think boho-cute and totally Dutch. BONUS: Wanna see even more? Talking about Dutch towns, the name Urk might not be the most mentioned, but for those who love discovering unique stories of seaside towns, it’s definitely worth a visit. This time, we recommend a trip to Urk to check out the iconic Lighthouse Urk—a landmark of the town and the best viewpoint. You can also relax on the lawn near Urk Park and soak in the tranquility of the North Sea. 📸 Photo Spot Recommendation|Lighthouse Urk Take a leisurely walk from the town center to Urk Lighthouse, passing by colorful fishermen's cottages along the way. The highlight, of course, is the Lighthouse Urk! This century-old lighthouse, with its white tower and red cap, is incredibly photogenic in any weather—a must-visit spot for Instagram enthusiasts! Opening Hours: Year-round 11:00 AM–5:00 PM (Tuesday–Saturday)|Monday 2:00 PM–5:00 PM Address: Wijk 3 80, 8321 GA Urk, Netherlands Tips: The exterior of the lighthouse and the park are completely free to visit, but there’s an admission fee for the interior (tickets available on-site). On weekdays, it’s often not crowded, so you might even capture a panoramic shot without anyone in the frame! 🍃 Chill and Relax|Urk Park Don’t rush off after taking photos. Right next to the lighthouse is Urk Park, where the entire lawn is wonderfully comfortable on a good weather day. Locals often bring picnics or enjoy a coffee while chilling. We recommend grabbing some bread, cheese, and smoked fish as snacks, sitting down to gaze at the sea, and daydreaming—it feels like being in a Nordic fishing village! 🥨 Food Recommendations If you’re hungry after exploring the lighthouse, head to a local restaurant by the town’s fishing port to enjoy fresh fish and chips, or try the most authentic Dutch smoked fish (Gerookte vis) and herring (Haring). The prices are reasonable, and the flavors are truly local. 🚌 Transportation Tips Urk is a bit far from major cities, so it’s recommended to take a train to Lelystad and then transfer to a bus to Urk. All the main attractions, including the lighthouse, are within walking distance, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll and photo-taking. 🔖 Practical Tips · Although Urk Lighthouse isn’t very large, the view from the top offers a stunning panorama of the town and the North Sea, which is incredibly soothing. · Wear sneakers or comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone paths and grassy areas can get slippery when it rains. · Bring a jacket, as the weather by the North Sea changes quickly. The sea breeze is refreshing but can be quite chilly. · To avoid crowds, visit on a weekday afternoon when it’s quieter and the atmosphere is serene. This mini itinerary is relaxed and unhurried, perfect for a casual stroll with friends or a partner to enjoy a laid-back day. If you love slow travel and fairy-tale-like towns, Urk should definitely be on your travel bucket list!
