Uxmal travel guide and discussion

🪄As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Uxmal is less accessible due to its remote location, and is not as famous as Chichen Itza, which is also on the Yucatan Peninsula and a representative of the Maya culture. The architectural complex of Uxmal is actually better preserved and allows for climbing to get a panoramic view. Standing atop, one feels like Columbus discovering a new world, which is quite impressive👍 🪄The first thing you see when entering the ancient city is the tallest Pyramid of the Magician, named after the legend that it was built overnight by a magician. It stands 35 meters high and has a rare elliptical shape. It was built around 700 AD, which is later than Chichen Itza, and is the most beautiful I have seen in Mexico, but climbing is no longer allowed🥀 🪄Another noteworthy structure is the Governor's Palace, whose facade is made up of intricately carved stone blocks forming the mask of the feathered serpent god🎭. It is said that the mask appears over 150 times without any discrepancy, isn't that cool? 🪄Funny enough, because the steps were so steep, my legs turned to jelly while climbing. I had to crawl up on all fours, and when coming down, I was so dizzy😵 that I had to sit on the steps and scoot down one by one, fearing I might tumble down and make a fool of myself. It turns out that even I, who have bungee jumped off the Macau Tower, can have a fear of heights, haha. 🚌If you come to the Yucatan Peninsula, I strongly recommend spending a day at Uxmal. It takes about 2 hours from Merida, and don't miss your stop at Uxmal. Also, I highly recommend the ADO bus🚌 for travel in Mexico; it's cheap and has many departures, and you can buy tickets directly on their website. ⏰A reminder for those on a self-driving tour in eastern Mexico: you may often be stopped by police👮 asking for money. Besides the language barrier making communication difficult, if you don't pay, they might take you straight to the police station. This is something to be especially aware of when traveling on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Basing myself in Mérida for a quick weekend and I only have one day for ruins. Torn between the big name and easier logistics of Chichén Itzá and the quieter feel of spots like Uxmal, Ek Balam, Mayapán or Dzibilchaltún. I’m more into carvings and wandering than ticking boxes, and I’d love a place that still feels atmospheric even if it’s hot and busy. If you had time for just one, which Maya site in Yucatán would you pick for a day trip, and why?

In 1502, Columbus embarked on his final voyage to the Americas, exactly ten years after his initial discovery of the "New World." His ship docked in the Gulf of Honduras, and Columbus and his crew excitedly stepped onto the long-missed verdant land. In a local market, a beautifully crafted pottery bowl caught his eye. The seller told him that this beautiful pottery bowl came from the "Maya." This magical name entered the ears of Europeans for the first time. In 1519, Spanish explorer Hernan Cortez led his army across Mexico, conquering the Aztec Empire at the height of its civilization, "eradicating a culture as easily as a passerby plucking a sunflower from the roadside." By this time, the Mayan civilization was nearing its end, but some small Mayan settlements still remained on the Yucatan Peninsula. In 1526, a Spanish expedition went to the Yucatan, attempting to establish a Spanish colony by force and to forcibly impose Christianity. The Maya, refusing to surrender, waged a guerrilla war that lasted for over a century, until 1697 when the last Mayan city-state was finally destroyed by Spanish artillery fire. The Mayan civilization was a jungle civilization that existed in what is now southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Belize. Although it existed in the Neolithic Age, it achieved remarkable advancements in astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, art, and writing. Based on Mesoamerican chronology, Mayan history is divided into the Preclassic, Classic, and Postclassic periods. The Preclassic period (1500 BC – 300 AD), also known as the formative period, saw the invention of calendars and writing, the erection of monuments, and the construction of buildings. The Classic period (approximately 4th to 9th centuries AD) was the golden age, witnessing the peak of writing, monumental construction, architectural development, and artistic flourishing. The Postclassic period (approximately 9th to 16th centuries AD) saw the rise of city-states like Chichen Itza and Uxmal in the north, but the Maya culture gradually declined. Unlike civilizations like China and Egypt, the Maya never possessed a unified and powerful empire. At its peak, the Maya region was divided into hundreds of city-states, yet these city-states shared a common cultural sphere in terms of language, writing, religious beliefs, and customs. The Maya civilization's architectural engineering reached the highest level in the world, enabling them to carve and process solid stone. Through long-term astronomical observation, they mastered the cycles of solar eclipses and the movements of the sun, moon, and Venus. Their sculptures, pottery, and murals possess high artistic value, earning them the title of the "Greece of the Americas." It established an early slave-owning state around 400 BC, flourished from the 3rd to the 9th centuries AD, declined in the 15th century, and was finally destroyed by Spanish colonists, after which it was long buried in the tropical jungle.

Mexico is tempting to overpack. Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán Peninsula all sound like first-trip essentials — but they are not one compact sightseeing corridor. The key question is not “how many famous places can I add?” It is: Which region actually fits your usable days? 🧭 QUICK ANSWER 5–6 usable days: Stay with Mexico City. 7 usable days: Mexico City + compact Oaxaca can work — but keep it tight. 10 usable days: Choose Oaxaca OR the Yucatán Peninsula. 12 usable days: Use the extra time for depth, not another region. 14 usable days: Mexico City + Oaxaca + one peninsula purpose becomes possible. 15+ usable days: Better if you want Oaxaca, interior Yucatán and Caribbean recovery. ⏳ WHAT COUNTS AS A USABLE DAY? Do not count only hotel nights. A late arrival, domestic flight, long coach transfer or final departure day can easily reduce what you can actually enjoy. A 10-night trip may not give you 10 real planning days. That difference matters in Mexico. 🏙️ WHY START WITH MEXICO CITY? Mexico City deserves real time. It is not just the airport. A balanced first stay can include: · historic Mexico City · Reforma and Chapultepec · neighbourhood dining · museums or urban culture · one major excursion such as Teotihuacán Good first-timer stay areas include: · Roma / Condesa for the easiest all-round base · Reforma / Juárez for hotels and transport balance · Polanco for a premium, museum and family-friendly feel · Centro Histórico for heritage access, with more block-by-block care You do not need a rental car in Mexico City by default. 🌮 WHEN OAXACA MAKES SENSE Choose Oaxaca if you want: · cultural depth · a walkable historic city · regional food culture · markets, craft and atmosphere · Monte Albán from a city base For most first-timers, Oaxaca works best as a city-based extension. Three nights is the stronger minimum. Two nights can work, but only if arrival and departure times are kind. Important: Oaxaca City and the Oaxaca coast are separate decisions. Do not add Puerto Escondido as a quick side trip just because it looks close on a map. 🗿 WHEN THE YUCATÁN PENINSULA MAKES SENSE Use “Yucatán Peninsula” carefully. It can mean two different trip purposes. 1️⃣ Interior culture + Maya sites Think Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and cenotes. This is better for travellers who want regional cities, archaeology and inland culture. 2️⃣ Caribbean recovery Think Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. This is better when you want beach time, resort convenience or a softer ending after city travel. Cancún, Mérida, Valladolid, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are not interchangeable bases. Different base, different trip purpose. ✈️ WHY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS MATTER Flights help bridge Mexico’s distance. But they do not make the distance disappear. Every domestic flight still includes: · hotel checkout · airport transfer · check-in and security · the flight · baggage · onward transfer · another hotel check-in A short flight can still consume a large part of the day. Use flights to cross regions — not to justify too many regions. 🚗 CAR OR NO CAR? Do not rent one car for the whole trip. Mexico City: No car by default. Oaxaca City: No car required. Yucatán Peninsula: A car can be useful for cenotes, Uxmal, inland stops and schedule freedom. But buses, transfers and tours can cover many first-timer routes. Selective rental is better than automatic rental. 🌦️ SEASON AND SAFETY REALITY Mexico should not be planned with one generic “best season” answer. Route choice changes by region. Mexico City: Rain can reduce afternoon efficiency. Oaxaca: Major festival periods can increase booking pressure. Yucatán interior: Heat affects sightseeing pace. Caribbean coast: Storm season and current beach conditions can change the value of a beach extension. For safety, keep the advice practical: Check current guidance by state and route before travel. Use reliable booked transport. Prefer daylight for avoidable long road movements. Avoid unnecessary late-night transfers. Do not treat all Mexico as one risk level. ❌ WHAT NOT TO OVERPACK Avoid: · Mexico City + Oaxaca + Yucatán in 7–10 days · calling Riviera Maya “Yucatán” without explaining the difference · treating Cancún and Mérida as interchangeable · counting flight time instead of transfer time · adding Puerto Escondido as a quick Oaxaca side trip · renting a car just because one region benefits from it · adding another ruin only because it fits on the map ✅ FINAL TAKEAWAY Mexico is not difficult because the places are hard to want. It is difficult because the places you want are far enough apart to cost real travel time. 5–6 days: Mexico City. 7 days: Mexico City + compact Oaxaca — or stay longer in CDMX. 10 days: Oaxaca or Yucatán Peninsula. 14 days: Mexico City + Oaxaca + one peninsula purpose. 15+ days: Better for a fuller Mexico first-timer route. The shortest route is not incomplete. The longest route is not automatically better. Save this before you book the domestic flights. #MexicoTravel #MexicoCity #Oaxaca #YucatanPeninsula #TripMoments

Stéphan’s organization was flawless and met our expectations perfectly. The hotel was very charming, with a dive center conveniently located on site. After a day to acclimate, we enjoyed four twotankdive cycles: encounters with sharks, diving at the reef, exploring caves in Cenote, and a day trip to Cozumel. Nicolas’s guidance even reignited my wife’s passion for diving. At the reception, Anni also went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. The road trip planned by Stéphan (5 days, 4 nights, with return to the hotel) included wonderful hotel stops (Valladolid, Merida, Uxmal). The visit to the Maya Museum starting from Merida was particularly noteworthy. A huge thanks to the entire team – we loved the pace and overall experience. Thank you, Stéphan, Nicolas, Anni, and everyone involved!

We booked a short trip to Yucatán and are beyond satisfied. The trip was organized as a private tour (just us and the guide), giving us complete flexibility—and we’re already seasoned travelers. Manuel, our guide, tailored everything to us, fulfilling all our requests. We saw so much and had loads of fun, whether in Valladolid, Izamal, Uxmal, or Mérida. One highlight was swimming in a refreshing cistern—proof of the effort Manuel put into planning to make us happy, which worked perfectly. It eventually felt more like a friendly relationship. Even during evening outings, we shared plenty of laughter. Huge thanks to Manuel for an amazing time. We’d gladly do it again and highly recommend him to anyone reading this review.

It's about an hour by bus from Merida. Even if you take your time to explore the area, it takes just under two hours. The ruins are lush and pleasant. It's amazing that the reliefs remain intact despite the wind and rain! The return bus is at 3:15pm, so we had some time to kill and headed to Chocolate Story. However, since we still had some time left, it might be more efficient to take a taxi to Una and then take the bus back from Una.

Uxmal was amazing! The pyramids are super cool, and the whole place feels really peaceful. The Pyramid of the Magician is the standout and looks so huge. I loved just walking around and exploring at my own pace. Uxmal pyramids have lots of details and carvings on the walls, I spent quite some time looking up close to all those little details. A quick tip: try to go early or later in the day to avoid the heat. Wear comfy shoes, too, because there’s a lot of walking. It’s also way less crowded than places like Chichen Itza, so it feels a lot more relaxed. #northamericatrip #mexico #yucatan

Mérida, Mexico Business trip sharing. Merida is the capital of Yucatan, the birthplace of Mayan culture, and is full of Mayan civilization-themed souvenirs and clothing. Merida itself is a small city and is said to be the safest city in Mexico. There were literally police everywhere (Figure 5). It was also my first time on a business trip to Latin America to wander around alone at 22:00 at night. In the past two days, I only took a quick tour of the city. We recommend the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, a Mayan-themed museum in the urban area, where you can gain an in-depth understanding of Mayan culture. Tickets are 150 pesos. Tips: It is recommended to download Google Translate in advance. It will be faster to directly translate the image and read the introduction. If you are traveling here, it is recommended to book a one-day tour. (Around 1,000 pesos), nearby attractions include: Cenote, Mayan civilization ruins Uxmal, Mayan pyramid Chichenitza. Hotel Hacienda Merida The Hacienda here is a special hotel (Pictures 8 and 9). Very local style and nice environment. It is within walking distance from the Grand Square and 3 kilometers from the Convention and Exhibition Center. The hotel does not have toothbrush and toothpaste, please bring your own. Micaela Mar & Lena (Picture 1, Picture 2) Ordered the Octopus and Shrimp Taco, both dishes were good. The octopus is paired with sweet potatoes, which is sweet. La Parrilla | Colonial (Picture 3) The name of the dish ordered was Molcajete Yucatec. Molcajeje is a container used by locals to make sauce. This dish contains grilled bananas, onions, grilled meat, avocado, radishes, and sausage. The taste is average, the best thing is the grilled banana hahahaha. Museum of Yucateca Gastronomy Museo (Figure 4) A restaurant with a museum of Mayan food culture. It seems that the Mayan people's cooking is average, and the meat is very poor. After the meal, we visited the museum and bought local honey as a souvenir.
