Varese: Dinner and Dessert (Local Favorites).
I love the saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." It's not just about traditions and rules; it applies to food, too. Grabbing fresh bread for breakfast from the corner bakery, having dinner at the locals' favorite spots...
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. But if you're in the heart of Varese and feeling hungry, drop by La Romana dal 1947 gelateria at Via Alessandro Volta, 6.
You'll only find Italians among the crowd! They come here not just for the ice cream, but to socialize and chat. For instance, you might catch them arguing that chocolate gelato doesn't pair well with pistachio, or strawberry with crème brûlée. But here, you can get both. You can even come back for seconds—the gelateria is open daily from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays!
If you want to balance out the dolce vita with something savory, head over to a small pizzeria called San Genaro at Via Carlo Robbioni, 15. There's a proper pizza oven inside. Behind the tile-decorated counter, a smiling signora takes your order while her apron-clad signor makes the pizza right in front of you.
They're open every day from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and again from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM.
Grab a prosciutto pizza—which costs around €8—and head out for a picnic in the city park, complete with topiary bushes, gravel paths, and a fountain. Right behind it, you'll find the Villa Mirabello archaeological museum.
Happy travels!

Travel Highlights (Part 2): The Nature and Classicism of Varese and Novara
Our Italian journey with VALORO has come to a close. For our final leg, we experienced the fusion of art and nature in the tranquil city of Varese, culminating in an authentic Piedmontese lunch in Novara, marking the end of our trip.
▪️ Varese | A Secluded Art Nouveau Palace
Varese, a tranquil town nestled at the southern foot of the Alps. Gently embraced by sprawling parks and lakes, it's only a 40-minute drive from Milan, yet feels like stepping into another world.
Our hotel, the Palace Grand Hotel Varese, designed in 1911 by Giuseppe Sommaruga, a leading architect of the Italian Art Nouveau movement, is hidden amidst the greenery of Colle Campigli park. The five-story building offers views from some rooms of the shimmering waters of Lake Varese and the majestic silhouette of the Alps.
Stepping inside is like stepping back into the golden age of the early 20th century: elegant colonnades, winding wrought-iron staircases, dazzling chandeliers, and precious reliefs on the walls—every detail whispers of bygone gentleness. Stroll along the neoclassical-style verandas, listen to the melodious birdsong, admire the blooming peonies, and experience a ritualistic Italian morning.
▪️ Novara | Savor Authentic Piedmontese Flavors
Our trip to Novara began with a visit to the renowned SIVA leather factory. Afterwards, Giada invited us to explore the city center and discover authentic Piedmontese flavors. We wandered through Novara's heart, passing the city landmark Castello Sforzesco, and finally nestled deep in the old town at a traditional bistro called "Osteria."
This is a local favorite, where we savored classic Piedmontese dishes and authentic wines. From the smooth eggplant puree to the sweet scallops and lobster, every bite was a taste of local flavor, bringing this Italian journey to a perfect close with unforgettable culinary memories.
Looking back on this trip spanning six cities, each city was like a key, unlocking a door of inspiration for VALORO. These precious perceptions and emotions will slowly seep into the brand's fabric, ultimately transforming into the poetry and charm of the sofa in your living room.

Villa Baragiola and its Tactile Museum (Museo Tattile di Varese) are located within the Villa Baragiola park in Masnago, a quiet residential area in the northern Lombardy city of Varese, Italy. Children will find numerous wooden models here, like a three-dimensional encyclopedia you can touch, along with various other attractions. In fact, there are many multisensory trails that captivate even older visitors, while younger children can learn and experience through play. After the tour, they will have a deeper understanding of the magical power of the senses.

Milan's Unexpected Gem: Varese – From Alpine Reflections to 80s Beijing! 🇮🇹✨
#summervacay
Sometimes the most delightful travel moments come from unexpected encounters, and my trip to Varese was exactly that! Just an hour from Milan, Varese is a hidden treasure nestled among Northern Italy's mountains and lakes.
You won't find the hustle and bustle of a major city here, nor the crowds of popular tourist spots. Instead, Varese offers serene lakes, beautiful mountains, rich art, and fascinating history.
The highlight of my visit was an impromptu chat with a wonderfully enthusiastic local. She not only patiently shared insights into the area's history and pointed me in the right direction, but also spontaneously recounted her personal stories. She vividly recalled living in Mongolia and Beijing with her father in the 1980s, sharing tales of foreign cultures, travel anecdotes, and the dramatic changes she witnessed in China.
Just a few minutes of conversation felt like a journey across time and continents, creating a truly magical and romantic moment on an Italian street.
