TOP-5 RESTAURANTS: where really NOT SPICY, VARKALA, Kerala
When you ask for "no spice please" at a restaurant, you expect the dish you ordered to be not only tasty but also edible.
But not in India.
Waiters almost universally interpret this as "a little bit spicy," causing your taste buds to shut down in the unfamiliar shock and stress of the spicy food, leaving you feeling horribly burned. 🌶️
Variations on the theme of "zero spicy" also don't work, and since my vacation was long and I wanted to add variety to my meals, this magical guide to restaurants where the food can definitely be non-spicy was born. No thanks, just a like 👍.
Tested by me and time! All the restaurants are located on the beachfront, perfect for watching the sunset in the evening.
1️⃣ SAN FRANCISCO café & resto
Open 8:00-22:00
Delicious and varied breakfasts, bowls, oatmeal with fruit, omelets, a large selection of vegetarian dishes,
Wonderful and interesting signature shakes and fruit smoothies, lassi, delicious masala chai, good cappuccino, and matcha latte.
An incredibly filling and delicious thali for two, if it's time for lunch.
Worth trying are the dal, traditional dosa, cashew curry, and fried rice – all incredibly delicious. Don't forget the "zero spice please!"
I'd also like to mention the comfortable tables with sofas overlooking the ocean and sunset sky.
My number one choice for atmosphere and delicious food, one of the best for breakfast, and it opens quite early. My favorites are shakshuka with hummus and avocado toast, and dosa.

Magnificent views of the Cliff and the ocean, cozy outdoor tables in the courtyard. A large, varied menu and a good selection of vegetarian dishes.
If you're trying Indian flatbreads, this is the place to go! Be sure to try the parotta—there are two kinds. The naan is excellent, and the best roti is at Clafoutis, next on the list.
The most delicious Palak Paneer on Cliff, the chicken momos are a big thumbs up, the chicken schnitzel is top-notch,
a wonderful variety of pastries – the largest selection here, and the best bona fide pie I've ever had!
Their signature cheesecakes are a must-try, so fresh – every morning is worth the reward!
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable.
Average bill: 600-700 rupees
3️⃣ CLAFOUTI
Open 8:30 AM - 11:00 PM
If you love seafood, the freshest fish caught that morning, and perfectly cooked barbecue, this is the place for you.
Today's catch is displayed on ice in an open refrigerator. You'll often find a huge, five-foot-tall mahi mahi, cut to your exact size. Lobsters, langoustines, and shrimp of three sizes—medium is very tender, the largest is meaty but loses its juiciness.
My favorite is black snapper, an unusually tender fish with only a bony center.
Garlic butter lemon 💛 is the perfect accompaniment to your fish.
Delicious vegetarian and chicken Sizzlers, perfectly cooked rice; the doctor even approved their pilaf after panchikarma.
And the best roti, as I mentioned above.
The tandoori chicken or oven-roasted tandoori fish are exceptional, juicy, and the portions are large. They can be less spicy; ask for "zero spicy."
Desserts are limited, but we've been back twice for the lemon cheesecake to take away.
Average bill: 300-400 rupees
Fish: 1200-1500 rupees depending on size
Seafood: from 300 rupees for a palm-sized king prawn
The atmosphere is noisy and friendly, always packed, and the hospitable waiters will offer you the best table. There's an equal mix of Indians and tourists, so it's best to book in the evening.
Not the best choice for a date, but for groups, it's spacious and fun.
When it was fully booked on Christmas Day, the wait for food was 40 minutes. On regular evenings, it's 10-15 minutes.
They have a chilled white wine, worth trying. The view of the ocean and sunset from the second floor is especially wide.
4️⃣ TRATTORIAS
Open 8:30 AM - 10:30 PM
In the 2025/26 season, it became a favorite among local Indians, serving Indian, Tibetan, Thai, and Italian cuisine.
Located on North Cliff near Black Beach, it's a convenient stop after sunset right on the shore. A place for evening pilgrimage 🌅
My favorite is the spinach momos; they're the best. The Thai Pad Thai is excellent, and I unexpectedly tried the Tibetan Thupkha soup. Definitely worth trying!
From the average dessert selection, I settled on the chocolate balls with coconut. I give them a thumbs up when I'm craving a dessert that's not too sweet.
The atmosphere is calm and friendly, often not crowded, and you can find a private table. The dining room is very spacious, with a beautiful view of the ocean from the second floor.
Average bill: 400-500 rupees
5️⃣ CAFE DEL MAR
Open 7:30 AM - 10:30 PM
This picturesque cafe, also located on the rocky shore, offers stunning views with every sip of morning coffee.
The cozy atmosphere combined with an excellent selection of morning drinks and light snacks makes it the perfect place to unwind.
You can start your day well here with delicious breakfasts – a wide selection of porridges and bowls, omelets, and avocado toast with or without a poached egg. The efficient waiters and high traffic volume speak volumes about the freshness and quality of the ingredients.
I highly recommend trying the cardamom lassi. The fruit shakes and smoothies are truly amazing – they have a huge selection. The energy shots with ginger, lemon, and beetroot are definitely worth trying – you'll definitely be surprised!
A decent selection of coffee drinks, and their iced mocha was a pleasant surprise.
Italian pasta, fried rice with chicken, a good vegetarian menu. They understand the meaning of not too spicy. A favorite among vacationers, more Europeans than Indians.
The average bill is 400-800 rupees, no less, because you want to try all the cocktails 🍹 in this place!
Both sunrise and sunset in Varkala are a perfect paradise for your camera and soul!
