Vejle (Danish pronunciation: [ˈvɑjlə]) is a city in Denmark, in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula at the head of Vejle Fjord, where the Vejle River and Grejs River and their valleys converge. It is the site of the councils of Vejle Municipality (kommune) and the Region of Southern Denmark. The city has a population of 60,231 (as of 1 January 2022) making it the ninth largest city in Denmark. Vejle Municipality has a population of 119,007 (as of 2021) making it the fifth largest municipality in Denmark. The city is part of the Triangle Region, which includes the neighbouring cities of Kolding and Fredericia and it is located 110 kilometres (68 miles) north of Germany. Vejle is most known for its forested hills, fjord, harbour, shopping, pedestrian mall, and windmill. The word "Vejle" derives from the Old Danish word wæthel, meaning "ford" or "wading place" due to its location at a busy crossing over Vejle River. During Viking times, the wetlands around Vejle had to be crossed at the Ravning Bridge, a nearly half-mile wooden boardwalk. The first recorded mention of the town is from 1256, and the first known merchant town privileges were issued by King Valdemar III in 1327. Archaeological digs near St. Nicolai Church in downtown Vejle have shown that there were residences in the area as far back as 1100. The king's castle, Castrum Wæthel, was located where Vejle Trafikcenter is today. I never want to go to Denmark again. During that trip to Denmark, I encountered some truly infuriating things. We were traveling around Denmark in a rented car. In a quiet spot in the countryside, we saw a McDonald's and parked in their parking lot. The sign said parking was free for two hours, and since it was morning, the parking lot was practically empty. Not quite sure how the parking disk worked, I roughly set it to about an hour and a half before entering the restaurant. When I came out after eating, I was shocked to find a parking ticket on my windshield. Looking at the date, it was issued right when we entered the restaurant. I asked the McDonald's staff why I got the ticket, but they couldn't explain it either, and just told me to call the parking management company, Q-PARK. After much effort, I finally got through on the phone. I asked, "This is clearly a two-hour free parking area, why am I being fined?" The reply was, "Because your parking sensor wasn't set up correctly." I explained that I was a foreign tourist and didn't know how to set it up, and that I had only parked for about an hour, but the customer service representative was extremely indifferent, simply saying, "If you're not satisfied, email us to file a complaint." What angered me even more was that the parking sensors on the cars of the local Danish drivers next to us were also messy and inconsistent. It was obvious that Q-PARK staff were hiding somewhere, and when they saw our East Asian family getting out of our rental car, they immediately rushed over and only issued a ticket to our car. If this happened in a busy, crowded city center, it wouldn't be so bad, but in the quiet, empty morning, this kind of malicious enforcement against foreign tourists' rental cars was truly unpleasant. The fine was equivalent to about 1000 RMB. If I were that staff member, I would have rather proactively come over and explained how to set it up correctly than secretly issuing tickets. This practice of treating East Asian tourists like ATMs is truly disgusting. Furthermore, the attitude of the staff at the famous Royal Copenhagen porcelain shop in Copenhagen was chilling. When we entered, the staff at the door completely ignored us because we were East Asian, preoccupied with their own conversation. But as we left, a group of Italians entered, and they immediately greeted us with beaming smiles. Although the children love Lego, which is why we chose Denmark, I never want to go there again. I heard a Legoland is opening near Chengdu soon, and we'll go to our own Legoland in China someday.
