Estonia Soomaa National Park: Riisa hiking trail through floodplain forest
#itinerarycheck Soomaa ("land of bogs") floods 3 m deep in spring—the "fifth season." I visited in September, low water, on the Riisa trail (3.5 km loop, boardwalk + forest floor). Entrance from Riisa parking on the Viljandi–Kilingi-Nõmme road (free, no booth).
The trail starts on a 1.2 km wooden boardwalk over the floodplain (Raudna river catchment), then drops to a mineral forest path with oak, alder, and lynx tracks. Signs in Estonian/English; no fee, no permit. Water: brown humic streams—filter if desperate, but I carried 1.5 L from Viljandi (bus from Tallinn, Lux Express€10, then local bus 56 to Riisa, €3 cash).
Best add-on: rent a canoe in Kõpu (5 km away, €25/half day) and paddle the Raudna when flooded—different park entirely. The hike alone is 1.5 h slow.
Mistake: I wore road shoes—the forest section had mud pits hidden under leaves; switched to sandals. A German walker wore shorts and got whipped by alder branches at eye level.
Local rule: no open fire outside the designated ring at the trailhead (€200 fine). Berries (blueberries, lingon) are yours to pick—Estonian everyman’s right.
Opinion: Soomaa is a bog classroom. The boardwalk protects the mire; the forest loop is underwhelming unless you know what a floodplain does. Go in April if you can handle waders.
If a national park’s signature feature is inaccessible 3 months a year without a canoe, is that a bug or the point?

Overlooking the scenic Lake Viljandi, the Viljandi Castle Ruins are a fascinating reminder of Estonia’s medieval past. Built by the Livonian Order in the 13th century, the fortress once stood as a mighty stronghold but today offers a romantic glimpse into history with its crumbling stone walls, arches, and hidden passageways.
The site is surrounded by lush parkland, making it perfect for leisurely walks, picnics, and photography. From the castle hill, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Viljandi and the rolling countryside. The ruins also host cultural events and festivals, where history blends seamlessly with modern-day celebrations.
Whether you’re a history lover, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Viljandi Castle Ruins offer a unique blend of heritage and beauty in one of Estonia’s most charming towns.🇪🇪
