The funicular offers a round-trip ticket for around €3, making it one of the most affordable shortcuts you'll find in Europe. For those who enjoy exercise and early mornings, the hill can also be climbed on foot from around 7:00 AM. My brother and I briefly considered that option. Very briefly. Then we remembered the existence of the funicular. Problem solved. As luck would have it, we arrived at the station at exactly 10:00 AM, just as it started operating for the day. The timing couldn't have been better. There were no crowds, no queues, and we became some of the first passengers heading up the hill that morning. For once, we weren't following the tourists. We were the tourists being followed. The ride itself was short but enjoyable, offering increasingly beautiful views as the city slowly unfolded below us. Everything was spotless and well maintained, and before long we arrived at one of Vilnius' most iconic landmarks. Gediminas Castle Tower is all that remains of the Upper Castle, which once formed part of a larger defensive complex overlooking the city. #northerneurope Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania and can be accessed through the main international airport, train station or bus station. Some of the main attraction to visit include the university of Vilnius (because of its beauty). It is free to visit and open 24 hours a day. Other popular buildings include the cathedral and castle which can be visited in the old town. Both are free and also open 24 hours, with the castle providing a great view of the city. The hotel that I stayed in was around 40 euros per night and was a three star hotel but there are hotels available that are five stars as well as hostels. There are also a range of places to eat and drink including local restaurants (cold beetroot soup is popular) and international cuisine too.

#JulyDestinations2025 From Riga Central Station, Latvia, we took the Flixbus to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, a 4.45-hour drive. We stayed at Bali House, a guesthouse on T. Vrublevskio g. 4. The location was excellent, with the cathedral and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania right outside. The guesthouse was clean and tidy, and it was on the street but not too noisy. Our itinerary for Lithuania took two days: Day 1 Lithuanian National Theatre (where you can take photos of the three golden men) Catherine Square Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (we recommend buying full tickets; all four halls are very interesting, and the third and fourth halls usually feature European art exhibitions) Gediminas Tower (you can hike or take the cable car 🚡) Three Crosses Bernardine Garden St. Anne's Church Church Republic on the other side of the strait (you can go early to browse the shops. If you're looking for a stamp, see Figure 3️⃣ for a stamp upon entering. You can also mail a postcard.) Day 2 Presidential Palace Pedestrian Street: Stiklių g. Vilnius City Hall Gate of Dawn 🎫Lithuanian Art Museum Old Town Store 🎫MO Museum (Highly recommended. They've recently had a game exhibition on the second floor, and an art exhibition on the third floor.) 🍽️Must-mentary meal: Katpėdėlė Restaurant serves local Lithuanian cuisine. Try the pink broth (cold salty soup), potato dumplings (potatoes wrapped with meat filling and fried in oil), and fried breadsticks with mushroom sauce. This restaurant was taken to by a local, so it's a good reference for exploring Lithuanian cuisine. Figure 2️⃣NAMO Asian Fusion: Perfect for a quick meal. Try the Indian food; it's quite good! KFC? Honestly, there's no KFC in Finland, and I was craving fried chicken, so all my meals were fried chicken, hahaha! (If you're stuck for what to eat, try Georgian food; it's always a good idea!)

We've arrived in a Euro 💶 country, and the prices have skyrocketed 🤣. Starting to miss Poland's affordability... For transportation, you can opt for cross-border buses 🚌 to travel directly from Warsaw to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania 🇱🇹. Flixbus and Lux Express are both excellent choices, and for long-distance buses, these two are highly recommended. We stayed in Vilnius for 4 days and 3 nights, arriving at 8 AM on the first day 😕. Honestly, long-distance bus rides are exhausting (if you can afford it, fly 🤨, but as students on a budget, we have to endure). Luckily, our accommodation this time was great. They allowed us to check in early, store our luggage, and even rest on the living room sofa. We checked in an hour earlier than the scheduled time at a youth hostel. Vilnius is still very beautiful. The city is clean, with trash bins everywhere. We visited St. Anne's Church, Trakai Island Castle, and the Republic of Užupis, among other places. The atmosphere is very pleasant, though the sun is intense. It's recommended to head out around 1 or 2 PM (sunset is around 9 PM), giving you plenty of time to explore. Public buses require you to buy tickets upon boarding, costing 1💶 per ride. Lidl is the ultimate money-saving supermarket. During this trip, we made it a point to visit Lidl in every country for high-value savings. Ice cream here is a must-buy—absolutely delicious and cheaper than anywhere else 😝. I had one almost every day. We spent 30 euros on four meals over two days. In the evenings in Vilnius, we went to Olybet to watch a game. It's located near White Bridge, a popular gathering spot for young people. The sunset there is also stunning. Later, we visited the Hill of Crosses, which was truly spectacular. You need to transfer to a bus to reach the entrance, and then walk 25 minutes to get in. If money isn't an issue, take a Bolt ride for about 12-15 euros. Next stop: Riga 🥳.

Then make your way up to Three Crosses Hill for another stunning viewpoint. If you have extra time, be sure to visit Vilnius Town Hall and explore the lively market nearby. From there, stroll to the Church of St. Casimir, located right next to the Town Hall. Continue on to the beautiful Bernardine Garden, and then visit the stunning Church of St. Anne—a true architectural gem of Vilnius. If you visit the Town Hall Market, please stop by the stall of the man in the pictures — he was quite kind and even gave us free souvenirs. · Evening: Wind down with a peaceful walk along the Vilnia River, enjoying the historic charm around you. I went to the Church of St. Peter and Paul in the historic center of Vilnius, Lithuania 🇱🇹 It's a very beautiful church, but perhaps because it's a little out of the center of Vilnius Old Town, I didn't see many tourists. In this hidden gem of a church, the sculptures that cover the walls and ceilings were breathtakingly beautiful and took 30 years to build ✨ The interior, which was built by craftsmen invited from Italy together with local craftsmen, is said to be decorated with over 2,000 plaster carvings that cover the walls and ceilings.
