Not quite. 😅 We booked our OceanJet ferry from Cebu to Tagbilaran, Bohol through Trip.com: 6:00 AM departure, Economy Class, US$38.49 total for two people. And this is exactly the kind of journey I would put firmly in the PLAN IT category. There are several steps between arriving at Cebu Pier 1 and actually sitting on the ferry. Here’s the process shown in the boarding instructions for our booking. 👇 🎫 STEP 1 — Have your e-ticket AND passport ready Your Trip.com booking confirmation is important, but it isn’t necessarily the final thing you’ll use to board. The instructions for our booking say to present your e-ticket and passport at the pier for entry. So before getting out of the taxi, I’d already have both ready on my phone/in my hand rather than standing at the entrance searching through screenshots and bags. 💡 I also recommend downloading or screenshotting your voucher beforehand. When you’re traveling, I never like making an important boarding process dependent on having perfect mobile internet. 💰 STEP 2 — Pay the terminal fee / port tax This is one of the details that can surprise first-time travelers. Even though our OceanJet tickets were already completely booked and paid through Trip.com, the boarding instructions still tell passengers to go to the terminal fee counter inside the pier and purchase/pay the applicable port fee using the e-ticket. In other words: online ferry ticket ≠ automatically finished with every step at the port. Keep some Philippine pesos accessible instead of putting all your cash deep inside your luggage. 🇵🇭 🎟️ STEP 3 — Go to the OceanJet counter Next comes a particularly important step. According to the instructions attached to our Trip.com booking, you need to find the OceanJet counter and use your e-ticket to get your seat number printed. So don’t arrive, see that your Trip.com booking says “confirmed,” and assume you can immediately head toward the boarding gate. Your online reservation gets you much of the way there — but there is still a physical port process. And here is the detail I would take VERY seriously: ⚠️ Seat-number printing stops 30 minutes before boarding time, according to our booking instructions. That alone is enough reason for me not to wing this journey. 🧳 STEP 4 — Deal with your luggage After the ticket/seat process comes baggage. The instructions for our booking specifically say to check baggage at the OceanJet counter, while handbags do not need to be checked. There are different rules for Business Class, and oversized baggage is treated differently, so don’t assume the suitcase rules are identical for every passenger. This is especially important if you’re traveling around Asia with proper luggage rather than doing a Bohol day trip with one tiny backpack. 😂 Another reason I wouldn’t arrive at the last minute: checking luggage creates an additional step and potentially another queue. 🛂 STEP 5 — Head into the waiting hall Once the ticket formalities, terminal fee and luggage are sorted, you can finally enter the waiting area and relax a little. From here, watch and listen for your boarding announcement. And don’t automatically follow a crowd just because everyone suddenly gets up. Cebu Pier 1 handles multiple ferry routes, so check the destination and departure information. You want your OceanJet departure to Tagbilaran, not an accidental adventure somewhere else in the Visayas. 😂🏝️ 📢 STEP 6 — Boarding When your departure is called, have your boarding documents ready again. This is where the whole process finally starts feeling straightforward: follow the boarding instructions, proceed toward the vessel and find the seat assigned to you. Once you’re actually onboard, you can finally switch from transport logistics mode to WE’RE GOING TO BOHOL mode. 🌴💙 ⏰ SO HOW MUCH TIME WOULD I ALLOW? For our 6:00 AM departure, I would personally aim to be at Cebu Pier 1 at approximately 5:00 AM. Not because every passenger will need an entire hour to complete the formalities, but because there are several separate things that can consume time: 🎫 entering with your booking and ID 💰 terminal fee ⛴️ OceanJet counter 🎟️ seat assignment/printing 🧳 baggage check if required 🛂 terminal procedures 🚶 finding the correct waiting/boarding area 👥 possible queues And most importantly, our Trip.com instructions explicitly warn that seat-number printing stops 30 minutes before boarding. I would much rather spend an extra 20 minutes sitting in the terminal than spend my morning running between counters wondering whether we’re about to miss a ferry. 😅 For weekends, holidays, lots of luggage or your first time using Cebu Pier 1, I’d give myself an even more comfortable buffer. 📱 WHAT I LOVED ABOUT BOOKING THROUGH TRIP.COM The part I wanted to PLAN was already done before we arrived. Located about 30 kilometers southwest of Bacolod City, the park sits at 1,200 meters, acting as the last civilized outpost before the mossy forest takes over. Entry is a humble 50 PHP (about $1 USD), paid in cash at the gate—card payments are a no-go in these highlands. The "Seven Falls" trail is the main draw, but I spent my morning in the sulfuric hot pools. After a humid 4 AM hike through the lower mossy forest—where the air smells like wet earth and the trees drip with old man’s beard lichen—soaking in 40°C water while steam rose around me felt like a religious experience. The park is strict about its "no alcohol in the pools" rule, and for good reason; the mineral balance is delicate. My mistake? I wore brand-new waterproof boots. One of my biggest travel tips for Siquijor is to arrange your own transportation. Although it is a small island, getting from one attraction to another can be tricky if you rely entirely on local transport. Public transport is limited, especially outside the main towns, and paying for a tricycle every time you want to go somewhere can quickly add up. Rentals are available right at the port! The good news is that there are plenty of motorbike and car rental options around Siquijor Port. You can arrange your transport when you arrive and start exploring the island at your own pace. Compare prices and check the vehicle's condition before setting off. Rental prices · Motorbike or scooter: around ₱350 to ₱500 per day · Small car: ₱1,100 per day · Seven seater: ₱1,600 per day Important: Fuel is charged separately, so remember to include this in your travel budget. Check the rental conditions and any deposit requirements before confirming your booking. Drive safely! Do not underestimate Siquijor's roads. Although some coastal roads are easy to navigate, routes towards the mountains and waterfalls can be hilly, steep and winding. Some sections may also become slippery after rain. Take your time around bends and on downhill sections. Avoid riding at night if possible, as some roads have limited street lighting. Always wear a helmet and make sure you have the correct driving licence and appropriate insurance. My recommendation If you are travelling solo or as a couple and are confident riding a motorbike, a scooter is a convenient option. Travelling with family or friends? A small car for ₱1,100 or a seven seater for ₱1,600 per day can be excellent value when you split the cost. Having your own transport makes it much easier to discover Siquijor's beautiful beaches, waterfalls, viewpoints and hidden gems without having to arrange a ride at every stop. And after seeing the terminal for myself, my answer is easy: 👉 PLAN IT! Cebu Pier 1 is not just a small dock where you arrive and immediately walk onto your boat. It’s a proper passenger ferry terminal serving several inter-island routes, including the extremely popular Cebu–Bohol connection. 📍 WHAT IS CEBU PIER 1? Pier 1 is one of Cebu City’s main passenger ferry terminals and a useful gateway for exploring the Visayas without flying. When we were there, the departure information included routes such as Tagbilaran, Ormoc and Camotes. If you’re traveling around the Philippines for a while, understanding the ferry network can save you from taking unnecessary flights. 🏝️ 🏢 WHAT IS THE TERMINAL LIKE? My first impression: it’s functional rather than fancy. Don’t expect something resembling a modern international airport. The purpose here is simply to process a lot of passengers traveling between islands. There is a proper indoor waiting area with plenty of seating, although much of it is fairly basic terminal-style seating. The big advantage? You don’t have to wait outside in the Cebu heat. 🙌 ☕ CAN YOU BUY FOOD OR COFFEE? Yes — and this is important if you have an early departure like ours! There are small food and snack outlets inside the terminal, so arriving early doesn’t necessarily mean sitting hungry until boarding. Depending on what is open at the time of your departure, you can find snacks and drinks, and there is also an upstairs food/seating area reported by travelers. Still, for a very early ferry, I wouldn’t rely on every business being open. If you absolutely need breakfast or a specific coffee before functioning as a human being 😂☕, bringing something with you is the safer option. 🚻 ARE THERE TOILETS? Yes. Public restrooms are available inside the passenger terminal. That sounds like a tiny detail until you’re about to spend around two hours on a ferry — then suddenly it becomes very useful information. 😅 🪑 IS THERE SOMEWHERE TO SIT? Yes. There is a sizeable waiting area, and this is one reason I wouldn’t be worried about arriving early. You can get through the formalities and wait inside rather than timing your arrival to the last possible minute. If you have extra time, look around rather than automatically taking the first available seat — there are different waiting/seating areas within the terminal. 🧳 WHAT ABOUT LUGGAGE? This is one detail I would research before arriving because baggage rules depend on your ferry operator and ticket class. For OceanJet, the baggage rules were updated in February 2026. Tourist/Open-Air passengers currently have 10 kg free baggage allowance, while Business Class passengers have 20 kg. Trolley/collapsible bags in Tourist Class are supposed to be checked in. If you’re backpacking with almost nothing, easy. If you’re traveling around Asia with proper suitcases like us, allow additional time for the luggage procedure. 🧳 🎫 DO YOU NEED TO BUY YOUR TICKET AT PIER 1? No. I booked our OceanJet tickets through Trip.com before arriving. For two people traveling Cebu → Tagbilaran in Economy, our booking was US$38.49 total. For me, this is one of the biggest reasons to PLAN rather than wing this journey. I didn’t want to arrive before sunrise and start figuring out which departure still had availability. ⏰ SO HOW EARLY SHOULD YOU ARRIVE? This is probably my most important Cebu Pier 1 tip. For OceanJet, check-in is expected to be completed at least 30 minutes before departure. If it’s your first time using the terminal, I would personally aim to arrive around 60 minutes before departure. For our 6:00 AM ferry, that means treating approximately 5:00 AM as the comfortable arrival target, not 5:45. And I’d add even more buffer if: 🧳 you have large luggage 🎫 you still need to sort out your ticket/booking 👨👩👧 you’re traveling with children or a larger group 🏝️ you’re visiting during a holiday or busy weekend 🚕 you’re coming from far outside central Cebu 🤷♀️ it’s your first Philippine ferry experience Remember that getting to the pier and getting onto the boat are two different things. 🚕 GETTING THERE Pier 1 is conveniently located in Cebu City, which makes it considerably easier if you’re already staying centrally. Traffic, however, is the unpredictable part. From many central Cebu City areas, the drive can be relatively short, but traffic conditions can completely change the calculation. Coming from Mactan or the airport requires much more buffer. Port-related or luggage charges can arise even when your main ferry ticket has already been paid online. ✔️ Don’t assume an online booking means you can arrive and walk directly onto the ferry. ✔️ If you have a suitcase, budget extra time for baggage. ✔️ There are places to buy basic food and drinks, but for a very early departure I’d still bring water and something small to eat. ✔️ Going early is much less stressful than trying to understand an unfamiliar Philippine ferry terminal while watching the clock. 😅 🌊 MY CEBU PIER 1 REVIEW Is it luxurious?
