Waitangi travel guide and discussion

Paihia serves Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand. Whether you are looking for water adventures, historic landmarks, or scenic nature trails, there is a wide range of activities to experience right from Paihia. Haruru Falls A broad, horseshoe-shaped waterfall situated along the Waitangi River, reachable by car or via a scenic coastal walk. Walk the 6 km mangrove boardwalk trail connecting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to the waterfall. Giant Sand Dunes Sandboarding down the massive golden sand dunes located near Te Paki Stream. Rising up to 150 meters high, these shifting dunes are a famous stop for visitors renting boogie boards to slide down the steep slopes Ninety Mile Beach Must take a 4WD tour bus (the "Dune Rider") parked on the broad sands of Ninety Mile Beach. This famous stretch of coastline doubles as an official highway, used by specialized tour buses traveling up to Cape Reinga and the sand dunes. How to go there from Auckland Drive or take a bus from Auckland to Paihia first (about 3.5 hours north), spend the night, and then take the organized 4WD tour from there Auckland to Paihia Self-Drive: Drive 3.5 hours north along State Highway 1. Bus: Take an InterCity coach from Auckland Central to Paihia Wharf (approx. 4.5 hours). #travelblogger #travel2026 #newzealandtrip #travel #

#easytravelpost The Big Rimu Walk is 3 km south of Karamea (end of SH67, 96 km north of Westport, 2.5 hrs drive), free DOC loop — 1.5 km, 30 min, flat, through podocarp forest with two rimu over 600 yrs old (one 3.5 m trunk), Sphagnum on the buttresses and Atrichum on the track edge. Karamea is also the northern end of the Heaphy Track (82 km south to Collingwood). I drove SH67 from Westport, slept at the Karamea Domain Camp (18 NZD/night, card), walked at 7 a.m. in March. Day 19°C, forest 14°C, moss damp from sea fog. Wore trail-runners; the loop is gravel-and-board, the rimu root flare slick. Mistake: I arrived in Karamea at 6 p.m. in May — the only shop closed, no dinner except a 12 NZD camp-stove reheat, the Big Rimu loop was dark by 7. Stock in Westport. Second mistake: I hugged the big rimu for a scale photo — DOC sign: bark oil transfer kills lichen, 200 NZD fine, 2 m back. Third: I picked a "mushroom" (it was werewere-kōkako blue, protected) — a local: "that's Māori taonga, don't pocket it". Buy in Karamea (if open): a 8 NZD sandwich at the General Store, not the 35 NZD Heaphy-track hut dinner you didn't book. Gear: a 30 NZD fleece — Karamea nights hit 4°C in March. Local rule: no dogs, no touching rimu, no drones, the loop is wheel-chair friendly — stay on it. The moss on the rimu buttress is 600-yr accumulation — step on gravel. Opinion: The Big Rimu Walk is 30 min free and the trees are older than the Treaty of Waitangi. Most Heaphy trampers skip it for the track start 3 km away. Should DOC add a 10 NZD ranger "rimu + moss" talk Apr–Oct, or keep it self-walk? I'd talk it. Would you drive 2.5 hrs to stand under a 600-yr rimu draped in moss?

Bay of Islands: Waitangi Treaty Grounds-Where the Story of Aotearoa Begins As proud Kiwis, we first visited Waitangi Treaty Grounds with our parents when we were young. It’s a place we’ve returned to over the years and one we’ll continue revisiting. The older we get, the more we understand its significance — and we’re always learning something new. Walking the grounds is quiet and powerful. The carved wharenui (meeting house). The view across the water. The signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) in 1840. It shifts your perspective before you even head out to explore the coastline. What stood out for us: · Standing beside the world’s largest ceremonial waka (war canoe), imagining it cutting through the harbour · The guided tour that added context we would never have understood on our own · The cultural performance, where haka (traditional posture dance) and waiata (song) felt intimate rather than staged · Looking out over Pewhairangi (Bay of Islands) and realising how much history sits beneath that calm water Afterwards, the Bay opens differently. The boat trips, the swimming, the island-hopping — they all feel layered with meaning. The Bay of Islands isn’t just beautiful. It’s foundational. And starting at Waitangi gives the whole region depth. #travel#couplestrip#thingstodo#familytravel

#2024wish In 2019, I embarked on an unforgettable short stay trip to Waitangi, nestled on the north side of the Waitangi River in New Zealand's Bay of Islands. The serene landscapes and rich Māori history cast a spell on me. Exploring the Waitangi Treaty Grounds was a journey through time, connecting with the birthplace of New Zealand's founding document. The cultural performances and the iconic Treaty House left an indelible mark on my heart. As the sun set over the tranquil waters, I vowed to return. In 2024, I wish to go there again, to relive the magic of Waitangi and create new memories in that historical haven.
