Three Times My Sapporo Dream Fell Apart..... Then It Finally Happened
#bucketlistdestinations
Hi, guys!
Just wondering: Have you ever wanted something so badly that fate itself seemed determined to stop you from having it?
That was my exact relationship with Sapporo, Japan.
I tried to visit the city three times. That’s right. Not once, or twice. But Three times. At those moments, dates were booked, bags were nearly packed, and expectations quietly built themselves up each time, brick by brick.
And three times, everything collapsed.
The first cancellation (due to personal matter) stung, and the second one (due to work) hurt more. By the third, I genuinely began to wonder if Sapporo was a place I simply wasn't meant to reach. And then, the COVID-19 arrived and swallowed my third plan whole. At that time, borders shut, flights vanished, the world stopped moving, and my dream stopped with it.
I let it go, quietly, without ceremony. But I never fully forgot.
Then, slowly, the world began to breathe again. And in December 2023, I decided to try one more time.
And finally, I booked the trip, I packed, and I boarded the plane.
And then, 11 hours later (including 2 hours of stopover time in Singapore), after years of waiting, after surviving a pandemic, and after breaking three promises I had made to myself, I finally landed in my dream city, the city that had been on my bucket list since 2012
I can vividly remember that once I arrived, I just stood there, stunned, and thinking to myself: I am actually here.
For me, this was not an ordinary arrival. This was the ending of a story that had refused to end for years. And once I let that reality sink in, I gave myself fully to the city.
For my Sapporo trip, I wandered through Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo and watched the world move slowly around me. I climbed the Sapporo TV Tower and looked out over a city I had spent years imagining and never seeing. Furthermore, I stood before the Clock Tower and the Hokkaido Government Office, two quiet witnesses to history, and felt strangely connected to them, as if they had been waiting for me too.
Furthermore, as evening fell, I wandered the covered arcade of Tanukikoji Shopping Street, and I ate my way through the city without apology, fresh seafood, steaming ramen, Hokkaido's famous desserts, each bite tasting like something I had genuinely earned.
During this trip, I took a lot of photos, and to be honest, every photo felt heavier with meaning. Every street felt like a quiet victory, and every moment carried the weight of everything it took to get there.
On a personal level, Sapporo stopped being a city on a map for me. It became proof that some dreams do not disappear when they are delayed. And this journey is a memory that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Now I want to know your story. What destination have you postponed or lost again and again, only to finally reach it? Because the best travel stories often start the same way: I tried three times, and on the fourth, I finally made it!
Thanks!
