At 6:20 the oak trunks went black cutout, the fern (Dryopteris, bracken) caught a last side-light so the fronds looked lit from inside, and the West Dart behind the boulders turned a thin gold slip while the moor above went indigo. A £4 hot chocolate from the Two Bridges bar earlier. Mistake: coming in August noon — midge hell, flat light, the lichens are grey. Another: walking through the wood — Dartmoor NPA forbids it, every footstep skins the moss; stand at the NNR boundary wall, the gloom reads better from the edge anyway. Rule: no fires, no dogs off-lead (livestock + ground-nesting birds), no picking lichen (SSSI, criminal offence); wild camping banned in the wood's square km; the footpath is rocky, ankle boots minimum. Opinion: Wistman's twilight is the only Dartmoor sunset where the dark arrives early and wins — the oak grew stunted to survive 500 years of Atlantic weather, and the dusk just finishes the job the climate started.
