Wicklow travel guide and discussion

There's this place in County Wicklow that I thought I'd done. Powerscourt. First time around, I rolled up with a group of mates, wandered the gardens in a light drizzle, took a few snaps of the waterfall, bought some fudge, and thought — "grand place, lovely gardens, one and done." Wrong. So wrong. I went back recently — solo this time — and Powerscourt basically whispered, "you weren't paying attention." Here's the thing nobody tells you: that place is enormous. Not just the gardens — thefeelingof it. The first visit I stuck to the main paths, followed the crowd, did the obvious loop. This time I went off-script. I took the left turn past the Italian Gardens nobody walks past. Found this wild, overgrown bit with a stone bridge and literally no one around. Sat down. Heard nothing but water and birds. It was like discovering a secret room inside a house you thought you knew. Then I walked further — way further — up towards the Tonduff forest trail at the back. Didn't even know that existed before. Pine trees, fog rolling in, the whole Wicklow Mountains mood doing its thing. I stood there thinking, "I drove forty minutes from Dublin the first time and missed ALL of this because I was in a rush." The waterfall looked completely different too. Not the postcard version — the real one, where you get close enough to feel the mist on your face and the sound actually drowns out your thoughts. I stood there for ages. No photo could capture it. I didn't even try. And the house itself — I skipped the interior tour last time because the queue was mental. This time I booked ahead, went slow, and genuinely learned stuff. The history is wild. The Wingfield family, the 1974 fire, the restoration. I'd been walking through a building withlayersand treated it like a photo backdrop. Powerscourt is a repeat destination because it doesn't reveal itself in one visit. It unfolds. You need different eyes, a different pace, maybe a different season. The first trip is the brochure. The second trip is the real conversation. So I'm curious — what's a place you thought was "just a day trip" that completely surprised you on a second go? And honestly, do you think solo revisits hit different than going with a group? Because I think that's the cheat code. Drop your hidden gems below. I'm building a list. 🌿 #repeatdestination

What a place. The ruins of the Black Castle on the top of the hill at Wicklow Ireland

💧✨An Irish lake became the heart of the ❤️Scandinavian saga" Did you think Kattegat was a real city? It's a set on the shores of Loch Tay in County Wicklow, Ireland. It was here that the iconic Viking settlement was built: houses, shipyards, markets—everything for the filming of the series.😲 💥The location is a magnet for fans: it's easy to imagine Ragnar gathering his army, and Floki building a new longship. Plus, the natural scenery—mountains, water, fog—fits perfectly with the "northern" vibe. For photos, take a perspective from the water: it better captures the scale of the "city." 📍 Where: Loch Tay, County Wicklow, Ireland. 🎯 Best for: Vikings fans, film tourism enthusiasts, photographers. 💡 Tip: Arrive early in the morning—fewer people and more "movie-like" silence. An attraction that doesn't exist…

The cove is a 5-star spot in the morning, but it drops to a 2-3 rating when it starts getting crowded, especially as it fills up with plastic and other trash, likely coming from the numerous boats in the area. It's a shame because the cove itself is truly extraordinary. I can only imagine how amazing it must be during April and May.

#worthitomot #Glendalough #WicklowGap I took St Kevin's Bus from Dublin (€28 return, 1h50) and was at the Upper Lake by 8:20 am. Glendalough's Monastic City — round tower, St Kevin's Church, the 7th-c. crosses — is free to walk; the OPW Visitor Centre museum is €5.I skipped the museum, did the 1h Spinc boardwalk to the Upper Lake viewpoint (deer sighted twice, sika hybrids, 50 m off the path), then drove the R756 over Wicklow Gap (no bus, no fee, National Park free) to the 400 m lay-by where a meadow path drops north toward Tonelagee. Saw three red deer hinds in the grass, no fence, no crowd. Mistake: I once arrived at 11 am on a Saturday — Upper Lake car park full, tour groups on the round tower steps. Pre-9 am is the only quiet Glendalough. Another mistake: driving Wicklow Gap in March without checking — ice on the summit bends, no salt, one lane. It's a summer/fall road for casual drivers. Pack a rain shell even in July; the Spinc boardwalk wind cuts cold. Worth it? Yes — Glendalough is the rare site where the free trails beat the paid museum, and Wicklow Gap adds a high bog meadow with wild deer for zero euros. Question: with the monastic ruins free and the deer meadow free, is the €5 museum the weakest link, or does it frame the stones you just walked?

#arrivalguide Glendalough on a Saturday in July is a car park war—arrive after 10 am and the Upper Lake lot is full and you’re stuck 2 km down the road. I cycled from Laragh at 7:30 instead. The Spinc trail (the boardwalked cliff section officially called the “Spinc and Glenealo Valley” loop) starts at the visitor centre, climbs through oak woodland to the boardwalk pinned to the cliff above the Upper Lake, then reaches the waterfall overlook where the Glenealo river threads down 150 m of rock. The full loop is 9 km, 3–4 hours, 380 m ascent; I did the upper boardwalk out-and-back to the overlook and back in 2h10, saving the valley return for another day. The boardwalk is metal mesh, grippy even in drizzle, but the woodland steps before it are polished by millions of boots—trekking poles help. No fee for the park; the OPW visitor centre has toilets and a €5 guidebook. A mistake: I trusted a phone map and missed the left fork at the “Poulanass” waterfall, adding 40 minutes. Midges are vicious in still August evenings; bring repellent. The monastic ruins at the Lower Lake are worth 30 minutes after the hike. Question for Ireland hikers: is Glendalough now too crowded to enjoy, or does an early start still buy you the valley alone?

Wow! Today I’m sharing an amazing golf course! This golf course at Greystones Harbour Marina in Ireland feels like a gift from heaven🎁 The location is incredible! Facing the Irish Sea, swinging under blue skies and white clouds🌊 You can also see golden fields of rapeseed flowers🌼 This sea and sky view is so healing! 🌅 The unbeatable ocean view is distracting Every swing is drawn to the silver-glimmering sea in the distance🤣 Bring a camera📸 Every shot looks like a masterpiece! 🏡 Beautiful seaside town nearby After golf, stroll around Greystones town Colorful houses against the blue sky☀️ Feels like stepping into a fairy tale!

#itinerarycheck Glendalough is free to enter, but the Upper Lake car park costs a few euro and fills by 10 a.m. on weekends. I arrived at 9:15, parked at the Upper Lake lot, and did the White Route (Spinc and Glenealo Valley): roughly 9 km, 4 hours with photo stops. Start by the Upper Lake shore, pass St Kevin’s Bed viewpoint, then climb along the river to the boardwalk section—about 380 m of ascent to the Spinc cliff edge. The boardwalk is the payoff: a wooden ribbon stuck to the hillside with the dark lake far below and the round tower by the monastery ruins in the distance. I hit low cloud for 20 minutes, then sun, then a shower—typical Wicklow. Descent is 600-odd wooden steps past Poulanass Waterfall back to the valley floor. No shops on the loop; bring water and a sandwich. Toilets and a small visitor centre sit near the Lower Lake. Payment in Ireland is card-friendly; car parks often take Tap-to-Pay. Mistake tourists make: doing only the 30-minute Poulanass stroll and missing the boardwalk. My opinion: the Spinc is the one walk here that gives you alpine feel without alpine danger. Wear trail shoes, not sandals—steps are wet. If you want solitude, go midweek or start before 9. Combine with a drive over the Wicklow Gap only if weather is clear; in mist it is just sheep and white lines.

Just got back from Wicklow, Ireland, and OMG, I was legit SHOOK by how insane the Halloween vibes are here! 🎃👻 The Irish do NOT mess around—seriously, it’s next-level. Every street is loaded with epic decorations, and some houses legit look like they were ripped straight out of a haunted movie. The whole town gives off major spooky season energy, and it’s so much fun to just wander around and soak it all in. But get this—Wicklow isn’t just about the Halloween hype. If you’re after a dose of culture too, you’re in for a treat. I stumbled across some stunning Western-style architecture while exploring, and the highlight was a gorgeous statue of the Virgin Mary perched on a small platform right in front of a historic building. It’s all surrounded by a dreamy cobblestone path and classic iron railings—totally giving main character energy. 📸 Pro tip: This spot is MEGA Instagrammable, especially with that wild Irish weather. One second it’s sunny and the next, you’ve got those moody rainy clouds rolling in, making your pics look unreal. If you’re looking for the perfect mix of Halloween thrills and cool cultural sights, Wicklow is a major win. Whether you catch bright-blue skies or that classic Irish drizzle, your photo game will be on point and your feed will be living its best life. ✨ Ready to check out all these Wicklow wonders IRL? #travel2026 The Cove

The Wicklow Mountains aren’t just a place — they’re a feeling. A kind of quiet that wraps around you like a soft mist, where every gust of wind feels like a whispered reminder to slow down and just be. As I walked through ancient trails lined with moss-covered stones and endless green, I realized this wasn’t just nature — it was healing.

The island nation of Ireland is located in western Europe. Once upon a time, it was also the center of European religious culture. The sixth century, there was a monk named Ke Wen. Since childhood, he has defined his life direction and devoted his life to the cause of religion. When he was young, Kevin practiced in the tree hole in Wicklow County, and then followed the gods. The Glendalough Abbey, the St. Kevin Abbey, was built at the intersection of two clear streams. Although we can only see the ruins of the monastery today, it was once one of the European religious centers in history. After several wars and the plundering of Viking pirates, only the current wreckage remains. Walking in County Wicklow, full of rolling hills, the valley is green. Even if there is less worship of believers, it is still the best place for people to get close to nature. Walking in the woods, maybe the elves appear at any time. Ireland, Emerald Green Island!
