Wormerveer travel guide and discussion

Zaanse Schans is beautiful at any time of year, but I especially liked it in autumn. The famous windmills and traditional green wooden houses are surrounded by yellow and orange leaves, giving this iconic Dutch landscape a completely different atmosphere. The best way to experience it is simply to walk along the Zaan River. You'll pass historic houses, workshops and working windmills - some of which you can actually enter and see the old machinery in action. Autumn also brings softer light, changing skies and beautiful reflections on the water. Even cloudy weather works surprisingly well here - it somehow makes the traditional Dutch scenery feel even more atmospheric. And despite being one of the most famous day trips from Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans still has plenty of corners where you can slow down and just enjoy the landscape. If you want classic Netherlands with an extra splash of color, autumn is a great time to visit. 📍 Zaanse Schans, Netherlands #zaanseschans #netherlands #holland #autumn #autumntravel #visitnetherlands #netherlandstravel #windmills #travel2026#travel#naturalwonders#thingstodo#museums#citydaytours

Getting around the village: Flat walking paths throughout, no transport needed, just stroll and explore. 🔹 Giethoorn Public transport: Take the train from Amsterdam Central Station for 1.5 hours to Steenwijk station, then transfer to bus 70 for 20 minutes to Giethoorn village entrance. ⚠ Bus service is limited and ends early in the evening, so check schedules in advance with the 9292 app. Family recommendation: Private car or self-driving is best. It’s a direct 1.5-hour trip to the village parking lot, avoiding transfers and making it easier with kids. Village rules: No motor vehicles allowed anywhere! Ways to explore: walking, biking, or renting electric boats. 🏡 Accommodation suggestions Stay in a guesthouse inside Giethoorn on Day 1 and Day 2, with river-view wooden houses right outside your window. On Day 3, stay in Amsterdam city before heading home. ⚠ Avoid pitfalls: Many guesthouses labeled as Giethoorn are actually far from the village. Check the location carefully before booking! 💖 Real travel experience These two towns are the ultimate family travel destinations! Zaanse Schans is full of vintage industrial fairy tale charm. The constantly turning old windmills are impressive. Watch craftsmen make wooden shoes in the workshop, and snap photos with giant wooden shoes. The cheese farm offers free tastings of various cheeses with rich flavors, which fascinates kids. The route is lined with flowers, and the riverside lawns are perfect for running around. Giethoorn is known as the green Venice, with no car horns, only flowing water and birdsong. Rent a license-free electric boat and let the kids play captain, cruising between reed-thatched houses. The Netherlands is home to several famous towns, and one of them is the Dutch windmill village—Zaanse Schans, just a 20-minute drive from Amsterdam. This village perfectly preserves traditional green wooden houses and windmills from the 18th and 19th centuries, and it's completely free to visit. ⭐️ Half-day tour guide: For independent travelers, taking the Dutch Railways (NS) is highly recommended. It's a quick ride and you avoid traffic jams. Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station. The ride takes about 17-20 minutes. Walking: After exiting the station, follow the signs and walk for about 15 minutes to reach the village entrance. 📍 Must-visit spots & experiences 1. Classic windmills: Giant windmills standing along the Zaan River. Some are still in operation today, and you can buy a ticket to go inside and see how they work. 2. Wooden shoe workshop: Watch the traditional process of carving wooden clogs. There's also a giant wooden clog at the entrance perfect for photo ops. 3. Cheese farm: Enjoy free samples of various authentic Dutch Gouda cheeses. 💜 Photo spots: Definitely the giant Dutch wooden clogs! Plus the beautiful windmills along the way. On the way back across the bridge, we happened to see a huge ship passing through. It was rare and amazing to watch the bridge automatically split in two and open up to let the ship sail through—a really unique experience!

Spring 2016 in Europe was truly unforgettable 🌷✨ My journey started in Lyon, a beautiful city known for its rich culture and amazing food. It was the perfect beginning to my European adventure. From there, I traveled to Switzerland, exploring the peaceful beauty of Lucerne and the breathtaking scenery of Interlaken. Surrounded by mountains and crystal-clear lakes, every moment felt like a postcard. Then I continued to Milan, where I enjoyed the vibrant city life, stunning architecture, and delicious Italian cuisine. After that, I headed to the Netherlands—one of the highlights of my trip. Amsterdam welcomed me with its charming canals and lively atmosphere. I also visited the beautiful villages of Volendam and Zaan, where I experienced traditional Dutch culture, saw iconic windmills, and visited a cheese factory. One of the most magical moments was walking through Keukenhof Gardens, surrounded by endless colorful tulip fields in full bloom—it felt like stepping into a dream 🌷 I ended my journey in Paris, the city of light. From romantic streets to iconic landmarks and cozy cafés, it was the perfect finale to an incredible European adventure 🇫🇷✨ This trip was a perfect mix of nature, culture, and unforgettable experiences. Europe in spring is simply something everyone should experience at least once 💙

Since this is my third time in the Netherlands, I wanted to travel in depth and experience local life during this trip. This time the B&B was located in Wormerveer in the north of the Netherlands, so we walked around before returning to the city the next morning. It's a quiet, mostly residential area with very few tourists but the locals are very friendly. There are also canals here, and the water is very clear and clean. You can also see many cows and sheep grazing contentedly in the countryside. In the Netherlands, even the lives of cattle and sheep are enviable! Before leaving, I was lucky enough to see a rainbow! I really like this Dutch town! #2024Travel Review
