Address: Nanhu Lake, Jiaxing (南湖) Major spots are open from 8:00am-6:00pm. Wuxi If you’re into water towns and legit scenery, hit up Wuxi. The Liyuan Garden is a must — think gorgeous bridges, lush gardens, and epic photo ops. Autumn seems to suit Huishan Ancient Town especially well. As the season turns, the old town settles into a gentler rhythm. Golden leaves begin to appear among the traditional rooftops, while sunlight filters through the branches and falls across the stone paths. Walking through Huishan feels like wandering into a quieter version of Jiangnan. Whitewashed walls, dark-tiled roofs, small bridges and narrow lanes unfold one after another. Along the waterways, reflections tremble softly beneath the autumn light, while old courtyards and historic houses retain the understated elegance that makes Jiangnan architecture so timeless. There is no need to hurry here. An autumn walk is really about noticing the small things—the sound of footsteps along an old lane, leaves drifting onto the water, the warm glow of afternoon sunlight against weathered walls, and the occasional glimpse of a traditional courtyard behind a quiet doorway. The changing foliage adds another layer of beauty to the town. Green gradually gives way to shades of gold and ochre, creating a lovely contrast with the dark roofs and pale walls. On sunny days, the autumn colours reflected in the canals can make even the most ordinary corner feel like a traditional Chinese landscape painting. Huishan also carries a deep sense of history. This is Jiangnan in autumn—not spectacular in a loud way, but quietly beautiful. After a marathon bike ride that legit felt like it would never end, I rolled into Li Garden – and OMG, never heard of it before but saw the address pop up on amap and just thought, "Why not?" No regrets, fam. This place is a legit blast! 💥 The scenic vibes are sooo pretty it’s unreal, every mile pedaled was WORTH IT. Li Garden serves up classic Chinese landscape magic, with dreamy lakes, lush greenery, and mind-blowing views. It’s serving up major relaxation goals and cute photo spots for your IG feed. You gotta add Li Garden to your Wuxi to-do list, trust me. Basics (for your next adventure!): Li Garden Address: No. 70 Qingming Road, Binhu District, Wuxi Opening Hours: Usually 7:30am-5:30pm (check trip.com for updates before you go!) And if you don't feel like going thee by bike the metro station was about 10 minute walk from the entrance! So you gotta no excuses! If you are traveling to Wuxi, the Lingshan Grand Buddha is a must-visit! Located right by Taihu Lake, the entire scenic area is called Lingshan Scenic Spot. It features not only a massive Buddha statue but also several stunning venues and performances. The area is quite large; it takes about 4 hours to explore at a leisurely pace. It is suitable for all ages, including seniors and children. If you find walking tiring, you can purchase a sightseeing bus ticket for hop-on, hop-off service. First stop after entering: The Screen Wall, Wuming Bridge, and Bodhi Avenue Upon entering, the first thing you will see is the largest screen wall in China, inscribed with the words "Lake light stretches for ten thousand acres, pure as glazed glass." It acts as a screen for the scenic area, separating it from the hustle and bustle outside, and you will feel a sense of tranquility as soon as you enter. Walking forward, you will find Wuming Bridge, which consists of five stone arch bridges; you can just walk across the middle one. Further back is Bodhi Avenue, with lotus flowers carved into the path and shaded by large trees on both sides. It is a very comfortable place for a leisurely stroll and serves as the main road to the core attractions. By the roadside, there is also the Buddha Footprint Altar, featuring a massive stone carving of the Buddha's footprint, where many people stop to take photos. The main event: Nine Dragons Bathing the Buddha, be sure to time your visit for the performance! This is the most worthwhile dynamic performance to see at Lingshan, so do not miss it. In the center of the square is a huge lotus sculpture. When the music starts at the scheduled time, the lotus petals slowly open, and a statue of the Prince Buddha rises from within. Nine dragons spray water simultaneously, bathing the Buddha statue. On sunny days, you can even see a rainbow in the mist. After the performance, "Eight Virtues Water" flows from the mouth of the phoenix sculpture in the square. Remember to bring an empty bottle to collect some; everyone says it is a good omen for blessings. There are fixed showtimes daily, so check the schedule upon entry and arrive early to secure a spot. Buddha Hand Square & Xiangfu Zen Temple After watching the Nine Dragons Bathing the Buddha, continue forward to Buddha Hand Square. Here, you will find the "World's First Palm," a massive hand sculpture replicated 1:1 from the Grand Buddha's right hand. Many people come here to touch the Buddha's hand, hoping for the good fortune associated with the saying, "Touch the Buddha's hand, receive blessings." Next to it is Xiangfu Zen Temple, a genuine thousand-year-old temple. When Xuanzang passed through here on his pilgrimage, he thought the mountain resembled Vulture Peak in India, so he named it "Little Lingshan." With its red walls and ancient trees, the temple is quiet and peaceful. If you want to calm your mind and pray for blessings, you can take a walk here, and you can also enjoy vegetarian noodles in the temple. The core highlight: Lingshan Grand Buddha (the reason for coming to Lingshan) The Grand Buddha stands 88 meters tall, made of bronze, equivalent to a building over 30 stories high, and is even taller than the Leshan Giant Buddha. You can see it from afar, but standing beneath it and looking up, you can only truly experience the sense of awe and solemnity in person. The Buddha's right hand is raised, representing the relief of suffering, while the left hand is held out, representing the fulfillment of wishes. No matter where you stand in the square, you feel as if the Buddha is watching you. To "embrace the Buddha's feet," you must climb 216 steps. Legend has it that these 216 steps represent the 216 kinds of worldly troubles, and climbing them is equivalent to letting go of those troubles. If you are not physically up for it, there is an elevator that goes directly to the lotus pedestal platform. Once up there, you can touch the Buddha's feet, which is the most classic blessing activity at Lingshan. Standing on the platform, you can also overlook Taihu Lake with a wide, open view. Lingshan Brahma Palace, known as the Louvre of the East After visiting the Grand Buddha, the next stop is the Brahma Palace. Many say this is the biggest surprise of the scenic area. It looks understated from the outside, but you will be amazed the moment you step inside. The entire building was incredibly expensive to construct and features a collection of wood carvings, murals, cloisonné, and glazed glass craftsmanship. The dome lighting changes slowly, creating a magnificent and solemn atmosphere, as if you have stepped into a heavenly palace. Inside, there is a performance called "Earth-Emerging Pagoda." At the scheduled time, a pagoda rises from the center of the floor, accompanied by lighting and music, creating a fully immersive atmosphere. The Brahma Palace also hosts a large-scale performance called "Ode to Auspiciousness." If you are interested, keep an eye on the showtimes in advance. Wuyin Mandala, the Little Potala Palace of Jiangnan Next to the Brahma Palace is the Wuyin Mandala, a Tibetan-style building with red and white walls, a golden roof, and prayer flags hanging everywhere, making it perfect for photos. Inside, there are thangkas and prayer wheels where you can spin the wheels to pray for blessings. Climbing to the platform of the mandala, you can also see the Lingshan Grand Buddha from a distance. It is completely different from the Tang-style and Chinese architectural styles seen earlier, allowing you to experience different types of Buddhist architecture in one place. Summary of your visit The entire Lingshan Scenic Spot is not just about seeing a single Grand Buddha. It features an ancient temple, stunning indoor palaces, dynamic fountain performances, and a Tibetan-style mandala. Suggested itinerary: Enter the park in the morning, time your visit to see the Nine Dragons Bathing the Buddha, then go to the Grand Buddha to "embrace the Buddha's feet." Have a bowl of vegetarian noodles in the scenic area for lunch, and spend the afternoon exploring the Brahma Palace and Wuyin Mandala. It is suitable for families to pray for blessings and relax, and it is also great for taking photos. If you do not want to rush, take your time to walk around and soak it all in; a full day here is a very comfortable experience. A quick reminder: Please do not speak loudly inside the Brahma Palace, photography is prohibited in some areas, and please follow the scenic area's regulations.

Popular Suzhou: About a 1.5-hour drive from Shanghai. Listen to Pingtan on Pingjiang Road; Teacher Wu's classic "Sheng Sheng Man" lingers in the air. Stayed at the Wu Palace, a garden hotel with magnificent outer walls. Visited the nearby ancient city wall on the way, experienced the classic Suzhou-style gardens at the Humble Administrator's Garden, admired the Suzhou Museum—the final masterpiece of architect I.M. Pei—and ate a bowl of vegetarian noodles at Xiyuan Temple, known as the "Cat Temple." Suzhou wins on cultural depth and variety of experiences, but the popular attractions are always crowded; it seems there's no off-season. Hangzhou: About a 2-hour drive from Shanghai. The energy at Lingyin Temple is wonderful; as soon as you enter, you feel peaceful, making it worth the admission fee. The water of West Lake is lush and vibrant, blending perfectly with the city. Qiandao Lake: 2 hours by high-speed train from Shanghai. You must set aside 3–4 hours for cycling around the lake; it helps you briefly forget all your worries. Take the elevator up to the Tianyu Mountain Observation Deck and enjoy the amazing experience of taking the water slide back down. Choose a nice hotel to quietly watch the sunset over the lake; it's a destination that combines vacation relaxation with fun activities. Top-tier Nanxun Ancient Town: A 2-hour drive from Shanghai. Enjoy dinner by the Baijianlou river while taking in the "blue hour." Take a CNY 3 sculling boat ride. I ate at the specialty Shaobing King twice in a row. I unexpectedly visited the Pang Laichen Former Residence, which recently went viral on social media. An ancient town with no admission fee often offers a better experience than many more famous ones. Wuxi: A 2+ hour drive from Shanghai. In winter, feed the red-billed gulls on a cruise at Turtle Head Isle, catch a "tangerine sea" sunset at dusk, and cycle along Taihu Lake. It feels like cities with famous lakes all have a certain spiritual quality. Zhoushan: Took a boat to Shengsi Island and Huaniao Island. Huaniao Island is truly a secluded getaway, as if far removed from the real world—perfect for lying flat and zoning out. However, the transportation is too much of a hassle; I encountered rough seas on the boat and got so seasick I almost threw up my bile. Yangzhou: A 3-hour drive from Shanghai. Visited Yangzhou in mid-July because it's just too crowded during the "flower-filled March" season. The whole city has a classic charm and is very clean, like a large park. Slender West Lake didn't exceed expectations, and I couldn't quite get used to the Yangzhou morning tea.

1. 🌿 SUZHOU • 苏州 🚄 From ~25 minutes This is perhaps the most obvious reason not to move from Shanghai to a separate hotel. Board a train in the morning, and in half an hour, you're in a completely different world: classical gardens, canals, white walls, and stone bridges. For a day trip, it's better to choose a train to Suzhou Railway Station rather than just chasing the shortest travel time to Suzhou North; the central station is more conveniently located relative to the historic center. For the day: Humble Administrator’s Garden → Suzhou Museum → Pingjiang Road → canals in the evening. 💡 My take: A must-do trip if it's your first time in the region. 2. 🌊 HANGZHOU • 杭州 🚄 From ~45 minutes In terms of high-speed rail time, this is practically a suburb of Shanghai, though it feels like a completely different city. Hundreds of trains run between Shanghai and Hangzhou, with the fastest G-trains completing the route in about 45 minutes. The golden rule for one day: Don't try to see all of Hangzhou. Focus on one part of the city. For the day: West Lake → Beishan Street → a lakeside walk. Or: West Lake → Lingyin Temple → back to the lake by evening. 💡 If you like it, Hangzhou is exactly the kind of city where you should stay overnight on a second visit. 3. 🏯 NANJING • 南京 🚄 Fastest trains from ~59 minutes This is where things get interesting. Nanjing is significantly further than Suzhou, but the high-speed rail makes it a perfectly viable one-day destination: Trip.com currently shows about 348 direct trains a day with a minimum travel time of around 59 minutes. But you need to leave early. For a day trip, I would choose only one theme: 🏛 History → Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum + Zijin Mountain area or 🏙 City → Presidential Palace → old quarters → Confucius Temple in the evening. Don't try to combine all of Nanjing. It's too big. 💡 For whom: If you want to add a city with a completely different historical weight to your Shanghai trip. 4. 🌳 WUXI • 无锡 🚄 About 50 minutes on many fast flights I wouldn't add Wuxi for the sake of another Chinese city center, but rather for Taihu Lake. There are hundreds of trains a day from Shanghai; among current trips, Trip.com shows high-speed options taking about 49–53 minutes. For the day: Yuantouzhu → Taihu Lake → a walk by the water. 🌸 Wuxi is especially interesting to visit during the blossom season. 💡 For whom: If after a few days in Shanghai you crave greenery, water, and open space. 3 MORE TRIPS + HOW TO PLAN A WEEK 5. 🏮 SHAOXING • 绍兴 🚄 Fastest direct trains from ~1 hr 04 min I would save this option for those who have already exhausted the standard "Shanghai + Suzhou + Hangzhou" set. Shaoxing is much more interesting as a city of canals and everyday old Jiangnan life than as a list of major attractions. Currently, there are about 32 direct trains a day between Shanghai and Shaoxing, with a minimum stated travel time of about 1 hour 4 minutes. For the day: Lu Xun Native Place → Cangqiao Straight Street → canals → old bridges. 💡 For whom: If you want old China, but don't need another touristy water town. 6. 🌊 JIAXING • 嘉兴 🚄 From ~28 minutes A very easy escape from the metropolis that is somehow much less frequently considered by international tourists. Specific high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai South to Jiaxing South take about 28–35 minutes. The main point for a first encounter: South Lake • 南湖 I wouldn't try to pack the day with sights. This is a place where you can actually slow down. 💡 For whom: If you've already done Suzhou and Hangzhou and want a new destination without a long commute. 7. 🛶 ZHUJIAJIAO • 朱家角 And here, you don't even need a high-speed train. Zhujiajiao is within the Shanghai municipality, in Qingpu, and is connected to the city by Metro Line 17. Official city materials confirm access via Zhujiajiao Station; from the Hongqiao transport hub, the journey to the ancient town takes about 40 minutes. Canals, boats, Fangsheng Bridge, old houses. But I would do one thing: arrive in the morning, walk through the central part, and then intentionally move away from the busiest streets. 💡 For whom: If you want the simplest possible trip without train stations or intercity trains. 📌 AND NOW THE MAIN THING: HOW THIS WORKS AS A SINGLE BASE For example, you have 8 nights in Shanghai. I wouldn't do seven trips in a row. It would turn into a railway marathon rather than a vacation. It’s much more logical to: Day 1 → Shanghai Day 2 → Suzhou Day 3 → Shanghai Day 4 → Hangzhou Day 5 → Shanghai Day 6 → Shaoxing / Wuxi Day 7 → Shanghai Day 8 → Zhujiajiao or a free day And that's when the main benefit of this scheme appears: One hotel → no need for a small suitcase → no constant check-ins/check-outs → you choose trips based on the weather and your mood. 🚄 WHERE TO STAY IN SHANGHAI THEN? If you plan many such trips, I would choose a hotel not just based on the beauty of the neighborhood. Look for places convenient for reaching Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai Railway Station, because different directions and specific trains can depart from different stations. And always check the specific train, not just the "Shanghai → Suzhou" route: in massive Shanghai, an extra trip across the whole city to the wrong station can easily eat up a significant portion of the high-speed rail's time advantage. MY TOP THREE SETS If it's your first trip: Shanghai + Suzhou + Hangzhou + one day in Zhujiajiao. If you've already seen the main spots: Shanghai + Shaoxing + Wuxi + Jiaxing. In the second case, Shanghai starts working not just as a standalone megacity, but as a very convenient base for exploring the entire Yangtze Delta region.

🚕: If you live in Wuxi, or have come specifically to visit Wuxi, getting there is no problem at all. From the centre take a bus or order a Didi. If you are visiting for the day, it's a little more complicated. Check high-speed rail connections, Hitch app on alipay, Didi (even long distance can be reasonable) and buses. We used Hitch to travel from Zhangjiagang for around ¥70. The traffic was fairly heavy but we were dropped right outside the scenic area, when we eventually arrived! 👀 You can see the statue from outside, so you can actually get photos without paying to get in (I'm from Yorkshire in England) but I wouldn't recommend it. The view is limited and you need. a good zoom. Once you pay to get inside, you are greeted with beautiful statues, architecture and gardens for plenty photo opportunities. Don't just focus on the big man... the rest of the grounds are absolutely stunning too. There's a palace in the middle of a lake, a huge museum, a giant hand statue, grassy areas for restless kids to run free and for you to sit down. The main attraction is fantastic. You can see atmospheric mist rolling around the Buddha like an ethereal visage and it really is spectacularly special. Smoke from the incense adds to the ambiance and you feel a spiritual connection to your surroundings. We queued (for a not insignificant amount of time!) to climb the Buddha's pedestal and touch his gigantic toes for good luck. It took a while, but we did travel in peak season! The views from the top are beautiful and the sheer enormity of the statue presents itself to you once you stand at its feet! Id recommend not skipping this part and even if it's busy, it's worth it. 👣 Getting around the site is fairly easy for people with reasonable fitness. There are stairs to traverse, slight hills to climb and the grounds are as vast as they are splendid! If you are not as mobile or simply want to enjoy the views without the exercise, there's a shuttle bus service running around the park all day. 🍲There were several food stalls in and around the park. Outside there are many shops and restaurants too. We ate in the Buddhist vegetarian canteen and it was ok. It wasn't overly expensive but everything is vegan (think fish tofu balls, mock chicken, spring rolls etc) so meat lovers will be disappointed. ✅ Take lots of photos, walk as much as your fitness levels allow, visit the museum, see the palace, sit barefoot on the grass, enjoy the natural and spiritual aspects of the park, escape the crowds occasionally and explore the less touristy areas. There's a photo opportunity at every turn. 📷🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ 🎁💗 Shoppers, you're in for a treat! There are plenty of cute gift shops, including a Sanrio store and vintage trinket boutiques. It's so fun to browse, but if you're a fan of all things "kawaii," watch your wallet! 😂 📸 I recommend setting aside about half a day here. Take it slow, hop between shops, explore the narrow alleys for photos, and grab a bite along the way. The evening vibe is even better as the lights along the canal and shops begin to glow. ✨🌙 🍴 Food Guide (Tried & Tested) 🥟 Xishengyuan A famous spot often reviewed as being on the sweeter side, but I found it perfectly balanced. 😋 It’s a solid choice for a quick, tasty bite during your stroll. 🌶️ Wuming Chuanxiaoguan Bold and aromatic Sichuan cuisine that pairs perfectly with rice. 🔥 Be warned: if you can't handle heat, let them know, as some dishes are seriously spicy. It’s a popular spot, so be prepared to queue. 🍲 Bu Wanneng Xiansheng Hotpot Generous portions that are perfect for sharing. 🥘✨ Great flavor and a fun experience. Highly recommended if you're traveling with a group of friends! 💡 The Verdict: Nanchang Street = Easy strolls + Adorable shops + Insta-worthy spots + Endless food It's the perfect half-day itinerary for Wuxi. If you want to feel like you're in another dimension, this is the place for you! 🚀 It turns out the famous POP MART has arrived in Vietnam, taking up residence in the heart of the mystical Ba Na Hills Park in Da Nang. This isn't just a store, it's a true art object! What is POP MART? For those unfamiliar, it's an international brand from China that has taken the world by storm with its collectible toys and figurines. They collaborate with cool artists and create designs inspired by pop culture, comics, and cartoons. Each toy is a miniature work of art, coveted by collectors. 📍 How to find it? The store is hidden in the French Village, on the second level of the multi-tiered park. To get there, you need to take two cable cars to the right station (there's an entrance fee of VND950,000, but it's worth it). ✨ Why is it worth visiting? Even if you're not a toy fan, stop in for the atmosphere! The interior is incredibly beautiful and futuristic, making you want to photograph every corner. The entire blind box selection (collectible figurines in sealed boxes) is stylishly displayed in glass display cases—it looks like a modern art museum. 💰 Prices and lifehack: 👉 The selection is truly extensive, but keep in mind: the items on the first and third floors are the same. 👉 I recommend shopping on the third floor—there are virtually no lines there, unlike on the first floor. My bill came to 770,000 VND (~$30). I bought: 1️⃣ Blind box with figurines—280,000 VND. 2️⃣ Blind box with a Nyota plush toy—490,000 VND. I definitely recommend this place! It's a great way to combine a stroll through medieval France with a piece of contemporary Asian art. 🇻🇳✨

I knew Lingshan Grand Buddha / 灵山大佛 was one of the more famous places to visit in Wuxi, but I actually only decided to go very last minute! I’m not exactly a nature person, and I’m not particularly religious either, so at first I wasn’t sure whether I really needed to make the trip all the way out there. But since it’s one of Wuxi’s most famous attractions, I thought… okay la, already here, might as well go see it for myself. So I took a Didi alone from central Wuxi, and the ride ended up being around 1.5 hours. By the time I reached Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Spot / 灵山胜境, it was already about 1:45pm. And yes, that was my first mistake 😭 The whole place is much bigger than I expected. The main highlight is of course the 88-metre Lingshan Grand Buddha, but there are also temples, cultural areas, performances and lots of different parts to explore. The Buddha already looks impressive from far away, but once you walk all the way up and stand right at the base, that’s when you really understand the scale. You can actually go right up to the feet of the Buddha, which I did, and honestly that was probably one of the coolest parts for me. Standing there looking straight up at the statue feels completely different from just seeing it from below. What surprised me most though was how calm the whole place felt. I went alone, so I was basically just walking around at my own pace, stopping whenever I saw something interesting, taking photos and just looking at the surroundings. For someone who isn’t usually the type to seek out temples or nature spots, I actually enjoyed the atmosphere here a lot more than I expected. There’s something very peaceful about the whole area, especially with the mountains around it and the Grand Buddha overlooking everything. Also… please don’t copy my timing 😂 I only had around 2 hours-ish to explore because I came so late, and it definitely wasn’t enough. I ended up rushing through quite a few parts and still felt like I missed a lot. If I were doing this again, I’d definitely come in the morning and give myself at least half a day. There are also performances and other attractions around the scenic area, so checking the timings beforehand would be a much smarter idea than what I did 😭 One thing I’d also keep in mind is that Lingshan is quite far out from central Wuxi and not the most convenient place to get to, so booking a Didi is probably one of the easier options if you don’t want to deal with multiple transfers. And I’d personally try to leave before it gets too late too. The area is quite mountainous and feels pretty rural once you’re outside the main scenic spot, so once it starts getting dark there really isn’t much lighting around. I was definitely glad I didn’t hang around too late, especially since I was travelling alone. So yes, the 1.5-hour Didi ride alone sounded a bit excessive at first, especially for someone who isn’t particularly religious or outdoorsy. But once I got there, I understood why it’s one of Wuxi’s must-visit attractions. Definitely worth seeing at least once if you’re already in Wuxi. When I first stumbled upon AMAM LONBAKERY TOWN, the first things that caught my eye were the storefront and the beautiful display of pastries. Taking a closer look, I was completely spoiled for choice because there were just so many options! Each piece looked so appetizing that I couldn't help but wonder, "Are these pastries or collectibles?" What I love about this place is that their baked goods aren't just about the aesthetics; they actually taste amazing. The drinks are great too! I especially loved the pastries made with fresh fruits like berries and raspberries—they tasted so refreshing and weren't overly sweet. My personal favorite, though, was the egg tart. It was perfectly crispy and fragrant; I devoured it before I even realized it was gone! Another cool thing is that their pastry menu changes with the seasons, so you might find different treats depending on when you visit. If I ever get the chance to travel to Shanghai again, I'd definitely want to drop by and see what new goodies they have to offer.

🌸 WUXI 无锡 IN MARCH — CHERRY BLOSSOMS, JIANGNAN BEAUTY & ZHANG LINGHE’S HOMETOWN ❤️ I first visited Nianhua Bay 拈花湾 during a group tour in December and stayed there for one night. I remember thinking how beautiful and peaceful it was and that my parents would probably enjoy the place too. So when I decided to attempt my first-ever free & easy trip with my elderly parents, Wuxi came to mind. And why March? 🌸 Cherry blossoms, of course! Wuxi is home to Yuantouzhu 鼋头渚 (Turtle Head Isle), one of China's famous cherry blossom destinations, so I thought March would be the perfect time to bring my parents back to Wuxi. Little did I know that this trip would also come with a C-drama surprise. 😂❤️ ❤️ WAIT… ZHANG LINGHE IS FROM WUXI?! Around the same time, I had just started watching 《逐玉》 Pursuit of Jade and noticed Zhang Linghe 张凌赫. Then while travelling around Wuxi, I came across this HUGE poster of him. That's when I discovered… Zhang Linghe is actually from Wuxi! ❤️ Suddenly my cherry-blossom holiday had turned into a mini C-drama discovery as well. 😂 🌸 YUANTOUZHU 鼋头渚 — DID WE CATCH THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS? Well… almost! We were probably about a week too early for the spectacular full bloom, but thankfully some of the early cherry trees had already started flowering. So yes — we still got our cherry blossoms! 🌸🌸🌸 Yuantouzhu sits beside beautiful Taihu Lake 太湖 and is Wuxi's signature cherry-blossom destination. When the trees reach peak bloom, huge areas turn pink and white. Even without full bloom, I found Wuxi beautiful. If cherry blossoms are your main reason for visiting, I'd generally aim for late March into early April, although Mother Nature obviously doesn't follow our travel itinerary. 😂 Exact blooming dates vary every year according to the weather. 🏮 NIANHUA BAY 拈花湾 — STAY FOR A NIGHT I deliberately included an overnight stay inside Nianhua Bay because I remembered how lovely it was from my December group tour. It's a beautiful Zen-inspired town with traditional architecture, gardens, lights and evening activities. Staying inside means you don't have to rush away when the day visitors leave. Unfortunately… ☔ It rained on the exact night we stayed! The outdoor human performances AND the drone show were cancelled. 😭 And honestly, those were supposed to be the highlights of our overnight stay! The irony? The weather cleared beautifully the following morning — just as we were leaving. 😂 That's travelling for you. I would still stay overnight again because Nianhua Bay is particularly atmospheric after dark. Just keep in mind that outdoor performances and the drone show are weather-dependent. 🙏 LINGSHAN GRAND BUDDHA 灵山大佛 — AND YES, GO 抱佛脚! 😂 Close to Nianhua Bay is one of Wuxi's most impressive attractions — the enormous 88-metre-high Lingshan Grand Buddha. But don't think you're simply going there to take a photograph of a giant Buddha and leave. The Lingshan scenic area is HUGE. You'll find the Grand Buddha 灵山大佛, Nine Dragons Bathing Shakyamuni 九龙灌浴, the magnificent Brahma Palace 梵宫, the Tibetan-style Five Mudra Mandala 五印坛城, Xiangfu Temple 祥符禅寺 and more. 🚐 VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU'RE TRAVELLING WITH SENIORS: GET THE ELECTRIC SIGHTSEEING TRAM TICKET! The tram brings you from one major attraction to another and saves A LOT of walking. You'll still need to walk and climb some steps, but when you're travelling with elderly parents, anything that saves their legs is worth considering! And then comes the fun part… 😂 Go and 抱佛脚! If you're able to make your way up to the Grand Buddha, you can get right to the Buddha's enormous feet. Touch them. Hug them. Take your photo. 😂🙏 It immediately reminded me of the Chinese saying: “临时抱佛脚” Literally: hugging the Buddha's feet at the last minute. It's normally used to describe someone who leaves something until the very last minute and then desperately tries to prepare — like cramming for an exam the night before. 😂 Well, at Lingshan you can actually 抱佛脚 FOR REAL! 🤣🙏 🥬 HAVE A VEGETARIAN MEAL AT LINGSHAN Don't rush away after seeing the Buddha. Slow down and enjoy a vegetarian meal 素斋 while you're there. After spending a few hours wandering around temples and Buddhist attractions, sitting down for a vegetarian meal somehow completes the whole Lingshan experience. I'd allocate at least half a day for Lingshan. Take the electric tram, explore slowly, watch the Nine Dragons performance if the timing works, 抱一抱佛脚 😂, have your vegetarian meal and give yourself time to appreciate the place. 🏮 NANCHANG STREET 南长街 — COME IN THE AFTERNOON, STAY FOR THE LIGHTS For classic Jiangnan scenery — canals + stone bridges + white-walled houses + lanterns — head to Nanchang Street. This historic neighbourhood runs alongside the ancient Grand Canal 京杭大运河. Look out for Qingming Bridge 清名桥, old lanes, traditional buildings, little shops, restaurants and teahouses. Drop by at "Honeymoon" for a lovely afternoon tea by the canal. I'd come in the late afternoon so you can see it in daylight, have dinner and stay until evening. Once the red lanterns come on and their reflections appear on the canal, the atmosphere completely changes. ❤️ Take a leisurely stroll or hop onto a boat and see the old neighbourhood from the water. 🏘️ HUISHAN ANCIENT TOWN 惠山古镇 Huishan Ancient Town is another good stop when travelling with parents. There are ancestral halls, traditional architecture, gardens and plenty of old-Wuxi atmosphere. Don't rush through it. Find somewhere for tea, wander through the lanes and enjoy it at a slower pace. 🎬 THREE KINGDOMS CITY & WATER MARGIN CITY 三国水浒景区 Here's something completely different! Wuxi has a long association with China's television and film industry, and this enormous film base beside Taihu Lake contains sets created for classic productions such as 《三国演义》 Romance of the Three Kingdoms and 《水浒传》 Water Margin. Expect ancient city gates, palaces, streets, boats and live performances including stunts performed with horses. Even if you're not a big fan of the dramas, it's quite fun to step into what feels like ancient China. 🌺 MEIYUAN 梅园 — NOT JUST CHERRY BLOSSOMS March isn't only about sakura. Wuxi's famous Plum Garden is another beautiful spring attraction, particularly if you're visiting earlier in March. So if you're slightly too early for Yuantouzhu's peak cherry blossoms, you may actually be just in time for the plum blossoms instead! 🏡 DANGKOU ANCIENT TOWN 荡口古镇 If you have another day, consider visiting Dangkou. It's a picturesque Jiangnan water town of canals, old houses and stone bridges — and another place where you can simply wander rather than rush from attraction to attraction. C-drama fans may find another reason to visit too: Wuxi has been used as a filming location for numerous Chinese dramas. 🚕 FREE & EASY IN WUXI WITH ELDERLY PARENTS — EASIER THAN I EXPECTED! This was the part I was initially worried about. It was my first free & easy trip with my elderly parents, and I wondered whether getting around would be difficult. It wasn't. Wuxi has a subway system, but when I'm travelling with seniors, I don't see the point of making them walk to the station, navigate the station, change lines and then walk again at the other end. We simply called DiDi 滴滴. And seriously… DiDi in China is REALLY cheap compared with Singapore! 😂 For three people, the extra cost over public transport often wasn't enough for me to sacrifice the convenience. Hotel → attraction → restaurant → hotel. Door to door. Less walking. Happier parents. Happier me. 😂❤️ For anyone contemplating a free & easy China trip with elderly parents, don't automatically assume you need to join a tour. Apps such as DiDi make independent travel much easier than it used to be. 🍜 WHAT TO EAT IN WUXI — PREPARE FOR SWEET! 😂 Wuxi cuisine is famous for its slightly sweeter Jiangnan flavours. We were around a week too early, yet there were still early blossoms for us to enjoy. 🌸 ❤️ WOULD I RECOMMEND WUXI? Absolutely. Wuxi surprised me. It may not have the international fame of Shanghai, Suzhou or Hangzhou, but perhaps that's part of what makes it so enjoyable. My favorite spot in Huishan Ancient Town is Ruyi Bridge. I went twice yesterday, but I arrived too late to shoot the night view of Ruyi Bridge, so the photos turned out pitch black. I went early this morning to catch the front lighting on Ruyi Bridge, and then waited until evening to shoot the night view. The only downside was that it was windy today, so the bridge's reflection wasn't perfect. The last 2 photos were taken last night.

Lingshan Grand Buddha: The main 88-meter bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, visible from anywhere in the park. To reach it and "embrace the Buddha's feet" for good luck, one must climb 216–218 steps, symbolically casting aside one's worries. From the top, a stunning view of Lake Taihu opens. · Nine Dragons' Bathing Fountain Show: This dynamic performance recreates the scene of Buddha's birth: a lotus blossoms, a statue appears, and nine dragons bathe it with jets of water. Typically held at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:45 PM, and 4:45 PM (check on site!). · Brahma Palace (Lingshan Fangong): Called the "Oriental Louvre" for its sumptuous interior, domes, and frescoes. Inside, light shows depicting the life of Buddha are shown. Other important sites include the Five Seals Mandala, a red-and-white Tibetan-style complex reminiscent of the Potala. In the Xiangfu Temple, one can see the statue of "One Hundred Children Playing with Maitreya," and at the base of the statue is a giant 1:1-scale replica of Buddha's palm.
