World Tour Series: Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire - Basilica of Our Lady of Peace
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro (French: Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Yamoussoukro, the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire. It was built between 1985 and 1989 at a cost of $300 million.
The design of the church's dome and circular plaza was clearly inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, though it is not an exact replica. The dome is slightly lower than that of St. Peter's Basilica, while the cross at the top is larger. The foundation stone was laid on August 10, 1985, and it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II on September 10, 1990.
The Guinness World Records lists it as the largest church in the world, four times the size of Rome's St. Peter's Basilica, covering an area of 30,000 square meters, with a length of 195 meters and a height of 158 meters. However, the total area includes the priests' residence and the papal villa, which strictly speaking are not part of the church. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, while St. Peter's Basilica can hold 60,000 people.
To build this basilica, marble was imported from Italy and 7,000 square meters of stained glass from France. The numerous columns inside the basilica vary in style; smaller ones are used for structural purposes, while larger ones serve decorative functions, house elevators, and drain rainwater from the roof. The main hall has 7,000 seats, and the standing area can accommodate an additional 11,000 people.

Comparable to the Roman Cathedral, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Côte d'Ivoire.
Departing from Abidjan, the capital of Côte d'Ivoire, drive 230km on the highway, and you will arrive at the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the nominal capital of Côte d'Ivoire, in about two and a half hours.
The cathedral was built in 1986 and completed in 1989. It is said that it cost nearly 3 billion US dollars at that time. The entire cathedral covers an area of 130 hectares, and the height of the cathedral has reached 158 meters, the highest in the world among similar buildings, higher than the Vatican Cathedral, but out of respect for the holy land of religion, it is only claimed to be the second highest in the world.
The stones of the cathedral are all imported from Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc. The solid wood seats inside are made of domestic wood and transported to Europe for processing and then shipped back to the country. All the stained glass windows are imported from France, and each stained glass window describes a story in the Bible.
The interior design of the cathedral is novel and ingenious, perfectly integrating sound insulation, air conditioning, stairs, etc. into a whole. The exterior is a completely symmetrical French garden design.
The entire cathedral is magnificent and stands in a coconut grove. From different angles, there are different sceneries. Similarly, watching at different times of the day and under different weather conditions is more delicate and different.
