I booked a simple five-day, four-night trip to Aurora Village in Yellowknife online (without adding any other sightseeing or activities, as I either had no interest or had already experienced them): On the first night, I arrived in Yellowknife on a late-night flight, so I missed the chance to chase the aurora. For the next three nights, Aurora Village provided hotel pick-up services to take guests to the aurora camp. The pick-up was at 10 PM, with a drive of about 20 minutes. Guests stayed at the camp until 2 AM, when they were gathered and sent back to the hotel. Guests were divided into groups based on language, with different guides each night. Only on the first night was there an introduction and explanation of the camp; on the other nights, the guides were only responsible for pick-up and drop-off. There was no specified tipping amount. The camp at Aurora Village is quite large, featuring several small hills and a lake. Unfortunately, the lake was dry during my visit, but if it had water, the aurora's reflection would have been stunning. The most eye-catching feature is the dozen or so traditional Indigenous teepees of various sizes, scattered in an orderly fashion. These teepees make for the best foreground and complement the aurora beautifully. The village also has a restaurant (which was closed during my early October visit but still accessible for rest or restroom use) and a gift shop. The gift shop offers tripod rentals for just CAD 10, which is highly recommended if you didn't bring one. However, they don't sell or rent umbrellas, so remember to bring your own on rainy days. The teepees and restaurant are equipped with heating and offer free hot water and hot drinks. The downside of the Aurora Village package is that you stay at the same location every night, without the thrill of chasing the aurora. However, I personally felt content just seeing the aurora and didn't feel the need to chase it. 🏨 Accommodation I chose the Explorers Hotel. The rooms were slightly dated, but the location was not far from the city center. The rooms also had a fridge and microwave, which was convenient for not dining out. 🍴 Food A friend had advised me to bring my own food, as dining out is not only expensive but also generally mediocre in taste, making it not worth the cost. 📌 Practical Tips: 1. Since aurora activities take place late at night, it's best for "early birds" (especially those not yet adjusted to the time difference) to take a nap in the afternoon after lunch to recharge. 2. A tripod is essential for photographing the aurora. I brought a small one to save luggage space, but the aurora village lacks stone fences or low walls to stabilize it. You also can't lean on wooden stairs due to vibrations from people walking. A taller tripod can save you from neck and back pain while waiting for the aurora. 3. Food options in Yellowknife are limited, and supermarket instant/ready-to-eat foods may not suit your taste. It's recommended to bring your own preferred food (while adhering to import regulations). Also, prepare some snacks for a late-night meal after aurora activities. If you bring a small electric cooker, note that Canada's voltage is 110V. 4. The Independent supermarket offers a wide variety of food, but the nearby Shoppers Drug Mart is also well-stocked, with cleaner and more organized products. Plus, it has a postal counter where I managed to buy stamps and send postcards from Yellowknife during a postal strike. 5. Yellowknife has two major attractions that are highly recommended and free to visit: the Yellowknife Visitors Centre and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The former provides aurora information and offers souvenirs like Yellowknife pins and certificates for crossing the 60th parallel.
