The Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China, is one of the most spectacular and mysterious deserts on Earth. Surrounded by the Kunlun, Pamir, and Tian Shan Mountains, it stretches across an immense sea of golden dunes. Its name is often associated with the haunting phrase “Once you enter, you may never come out.” For centuries, caravans crossing this unforgiving landscape followed the ancient Silk Road, connecting China with Central Asia and the Middle East. Today, the desert offers an extraordinary contrast of endless dunes, dramatic mountains, ancient oases, and modern desert highways. ✨ Why visit? · 🏜️ Endless golden sand dunes · 🌅 Incredible sunrise and sunset landscapes · 🐫 Ancient Silk Road atmosphere · 🛣️ One of the world’s remarkable desert highways · 🏔️ Snow-covered mountains rising beyond the desert · 📸 Extraordinary photography opportunities Where golden dunes meet the horizon, ancient Silk Road legends still whisper in the wind. ✨🐪 #travel #china #xinjiang #couplestrip #trip #adventure #naturalwonders #nature #desert #explore

If you think deserts are just dry, boring stretches of sand, my trip to the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang will completely change your mind. Known as the “Sea of Death”, it is China’s largest flowing desert and one of the most breathtaking wild landscapes I have ever explored. This journey was challenging, humbling, and absolutely unforgettable. Before visiting, I worried the desert would feel monotonous and harsh. The truth is, its wild charm only reveals itself to travelers who take the time to immerse deeply. I drove along the iconic desert highway, where endless golden rolling dunes stretched all the way to the horizon. The black asphalt road cut straight through the vast sea of sand, creating a stunning contrast between human engineering and untamed nature. I learned many practical tips the hard way. The desert climate is extreme: scorching hot and dry in the daytime, with strong wind and sudden temperature drops after sunset. Sand gets everywhere — in your hair, clothes, and camera gaps. My biggest tip is to bring plenty of water, wear windproof layers, and always protect your electronics from fine sand dust. Never wander far alone, as the endless dunes look identical and disorientation happens easily. The most magical moment of my trip came after sunset. Once the crowds left, the entire desert fell into total silence. With zero light pollution, the night sky exploded with countless bright stars and a clear Milky Way. Standing barefoot on the soft warm sand, surrounded by nothing but quiet wilderness, I felt incredibly small yet wonderfully free. The daytime harsh heat faded away, replaced by cool gentle wind brushing over the dunes. What touched me most was the desert’s changing beauty. Daytime brings bright golden waves of flowing sand, while dusk dyes the dunes soft orange and pink. It is raw, wild, and completely unfiltered by commercial tourism. Many travelers skip desert trips fearing harsh conditions, but this rugged adventure gave me the purest sense of nature’s power. Here’s a fun question for everyone: Would you dare to spend a night camping deep in the desert? Or do you prefer comfortable city sightseeing over wild nature adventures? #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

I still can’t get over the fact that they built this entire futuristic resort in the middle of nowhere. Those blue glass domes and aluminum houses in the dunes look unreal from above! 📍save this to your Xinjiang bucket list. 📝 Tips before you go: 1️⃣ Book in Advance: Desert luxury domes have limited capacity, especially during peak Xinjiang travel seasons. 2️⃣ Prep for Sand: Bring protective covers for your camera gear and drone the wind blows fine sand everywhere! 3️⃣ Pair it with: Spending a day in Makit town first to experience local culture before heading straight into the dunes. 📍N39° Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang

#sunsetplaces The Tarim River does something extraordinary near Yuli County. It bends. Not a gentle curve, but a dramatic sweep that creates a reed-marsh oasis surrounded by the Taklamakan Desert. I arrived at Lop Nur People Village around 5 PM, and the afternoon light was already turning the Populus euphratica trees into columns of gold. This place is officially called Luoburen Village, a 4A scenic area about 28 kilometers from Yuli County . The entrance fee is 35 yuan, and you absolutely need the 15-yuan shuttle bus because the area spans 134 square kilometers . I learned this the hard way—walking between the river bend and the desert dunes would take hours. The sunset here works on multiple levels. First, the Tarim River itself catches the dying light, turning the water into liquid copper. Second, the reed marshes create these incredible silhouettes against the orange sky. Third, and most importantly, the Populus euphratica trees—those iconic desert poplars—glow like they're lit from within. I positioned myself at the Tarim River First Bend around 7:30 PM. A local fisherman was poling his dugout canoe across the water, and the reflection of the setting sun split around his boat. That single image captured why this place matters: it's not just a desert, and it's not just a river. It's the intersection of both, and sunset is when that intersection becomes magical. Practical details: The scenic area opens at 10 AM and stops selling tickets at 6:30 PM . September and October offer the best experience when the Populus euphratica turns golden . Bring wind protection—the temperature drops fast after sunset, and the wind picks up across the marsh. I wish someone had told me to bring a proper windbreaker instead of just a light jacket. Question for fellow travelers: Has anyone visited during the spring flood season? I'm curious how the higher water levels change the sunset reflections.

Didn't take the big loop, rented a car with family to visit all the spots we wanted, no ads at all!!! Sincerely sharing!!! 🌏 "About the itinerary" Usually, people take the small loop around Kashgar, or start from Kashgar and go counterclockwise around Shache and Hotan, bypassing the Taklamakan Desert and then looping around Aksu; but this time I chose to do half the loop, starting from Kashgar, spending three days in Taxkorgan, then heading towards Aksu, mainly to save travel time and to see the Populus euphratica forests above, ending in Korla; (For detailed itinerary guide, see images 2-14) 🏎 "About transportation" This trip I traveled with two older sisters, and since we passed through high-altitude areas, we chose to rent a car with a driver instead of self-driving (which proved to be the right choice). On the first day, at 3500 meters altitude, the two sisters already felt very uncomfortable; on the second day, at 4000 meters, I also felt not so good. If crossing the desert, an off-road vehicle is recommended; other times an SUV is sufficient. The national highways are well-paved and the ride is quite comfortable. 🍗 "About food" Xinjiang lamb is really delicious! Whether it's grilled lamb skewers or boiled lamb stew, the only thing I couldn't get used to was the steamed lamb buns, which have a strong gamey taste. Dried fruits are also recommended; you can ask the vendor to try some first, then buy if you like. Figs are now softer and easily spoiled; you can also try peaches, Aksu apples, and Korla pears. Here are some price references 💰: Lamb stew (20-30 CNY) Pigeon soup (20-30 CNY) Lamb skewers (5-10 CNY) Lamb chops (10-30 CNY) Hand-pulled meat (120-150 CNY/kg) Yak hotpot (200-300 CNY) Pomegranate juice (10-20 CNY) Apricot kernel tea (10-20 CNY) Dried fruits (around 60 CNY/kg), minimum half a kilogram 🤸🏻‍♀️ "About altitude sickness" · Don't run or jump! Don't take a bath! Don't catch a cold! · Always wear a hat covering your head in scenic areas because the wind can easily cause a cold and worsen altitude sickness; · Don't stay out too late visiting sights; walking on mountain roads can cause motion sickness and worsen altitude sickness; 🧘🏻‍♀️ "About clothing" · Bring a windproof mask; southern Xinjiang is windy and dusty all year round, with a grayish-yellow sky; · Wear a good windbreaker; traveling at the end of October, in the morning wear inner layers + thin jacket + two pairs of pants, at night wear a full set of windproof clothing; · Sunglasses are a must, as the sun often makes it hard to keep your eyes open; 🌋 "About the Populus euphratica forests" · The yellowness of the Populus euphratica forests varies by location; check in advance the condition of the closest forests. Also, try to avoid visiting around 3 PM because direct sunlight can cause photos to appear washed out; 🕹 "About drone photography" You need to apply for permission to fly drones in urban areas. In southern Xinjiang, the places I visited are not strictly controlled, except for the Populus euphratica forest in Bachu and the Luobu people’s village, which require UOM registration; no other requirements elsewhere. Oh, and at Bosten Lake, drones cannot fly higher than 250 meters;

The guide will check the vehicle and supplies in advance. · 11:00 AM: Arrive at Loulan Ancient City entrance, complete entry procedures, guide distributes audio guides. · 11:30 AM: Key visit to the Buddhist Pagoda ruins (the iconic building of Loulan Ancient City, over 10 meters high, standing firm after thousands of years of weathering). Listen to the guide explain the construction techniques and historical significance. · 1:00 PM: Simple lunch near the ruins (bring self-heating meals or dry food). Strictly no littering; all waste must be taken away. · 2:30 PM: Explore government office ruins (presumed administrative center of ancient Loulan, with visible broken walls and scattered pottery shards). If lucky, see marks left by archaeological teams. · 4:00 PM: Stroll through residential ruins, observe ancient house foundations and stove remains, feel the life scenes of ancient Loulan people. · 5:30 PM: Shoot sunset at the highest point of the ancient city, the sunset casting over the ruins creates a full atmosphere. · 6:30 PM: Return by car to Ruoqiang County. On the way, the guide will share several hypotheses about the disappearance of the Loulan Kingdom (water source depletion, war, ecological deterioration), very informative. · 8:30 PM: Dinner in Ruoqiang County, recommended local red willow barbecue and big plate chicken to relieve the day's fatigue. Day 3: Ruoqiang County → Xiaohe Cemetery → Return · 8:00 AM: Take the adventure vehicle to Xiaohe Cemetery, about 3 hours by car, with desert poplars along the way. · 11:00 AM: Arrive at Xiaohe Cemetery, visit the "Hall of Death" — hundreds of poplar wood pillars stuck in the sand dunes, with various shapes, some with carvings. · 12:30 PM: Picnic near the cemetery, listen to the guide tell the discovery process of the "Loulan Beauty" mummy (unearthed in 1980, 3,800 years old, skin still elastic). · 2:00 PM: Return by car to Ruoqiang County, stop on the Gobi to experience sand sliding and take desert photos. · 5:00 PM: Arrive in Ruoqiang County, pack luggage, buy local specialties (Ruoqiang gray dates, premium dates). · 7:00 PM: According to return plans, head to Ruoqiang County train station or airport, ending the unforgettable Loulan adventure. 🧳 Essential Packing List · Not a single item can be missed · Clothing: Windbreaker, quick-dry clothes (desert temperature difference between day and night is large, sun protection during the day, warmth at night), high-top anti-slip hiking shoes (sand-proof, anti-chafing), wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sun protection mask. · Supplies: High SPF sunscreen (SPF50+ PA++++, desert UV is very strong), lip balm (to prevent chapping), thermos (desert water shortage, need to replenish hot water timely), power banks (bring 2, weak signal and fast power consumption along the way). · Others: ID card, cultural relic protection zone permit, cash (some places have no signal), motion sickness medicine, stomach medicine (to cope with bumps and diet changes), trash bags (strictly follow the "leave no trace" principle), camera (with telephoto lens to capture relic details). ❗ Pitfalls & Precautions · Lessons learned the hard way 1. Documents must be complete: No cultural relic protection zone permit means no entry to Loulan. Don’t trust roadside "black guides" who say they can sneak you in. Safety and compliance come first. 2. Weather choice: Best time is April-May and September-October. Summer desert temperatures can exceed 40°C, winter can drop to -20°C, both unsuitable. Check Ruoqiang County weather forecast before departure; reschedule if there is strong wind or sandstorm. 3. Respect the rules: Strictly no touching or climbing on relics, no taking pottery shards, wood pieces, or other relics. Violators face heavy fines and legal responsibility (the scenic area has surveillance and patrols). 4. Physical preparation: Desert adventure consumes a lot of energy. Those with heart disease or hypertension should be cautious. Taking Rhodiola a week in advance can prevent altitude sickness (some areas are about 1000-1500 meters above sea level). 5. Signal issues: After entering the desert, mobile phones basically have no signal. Inform family of your itinerary in advance and keep close contact with the guide. The mystery of Loulan can only be experienced in person! Although the journey is tough, the moment you stand before the millennia-old ruins, all the fatigue is worth it~

📍Luobu Village There was a warning earlier that the Poplar forest might be gone So I feel lucky to encounter not just bare branches "Desert for thousands of years, Poplar for a thousand years, Luobu people for a hundred years" The early winter temperature starts to be unbearable, the scenic area Luobu people have retreated There are fewer tourists along the way The overall scene is more solemn and desolate in winter But The golden leaves on the ground of the Poplar forest form a carpet The little brother is still fishing on the shallow beach of the Tarim River The lake under the East Sand Mountain is still shining Black swans are playing in pairs, as beautiful as a painting Take the scenic spot sightseeing car from East Sand Mountain to Goddess Lake Pass through the Taklamakan Desert all the way🏜️ Riding a camel in the desert and looking at the Goddess Lake Still feel it's worth it 🎫: 50 (including sightseeing car) ⏱️: 10:00-18:30 🚗: It takes about 1.5h to drive from Kuerle city, there is a free parking lot at the entrance ❗️Notes 1⃣️It is recommended to take the scenic spot sightseeing car in two sections, the first section to Abudan Square. Most of the Poplar forest is on the way to East Sand Mountain, and then the second section belongs to East Sand Mountain-Goddess Lake-Abudan Square loop 2⃣️Most of the merchants have withdrawn this season, only a small amount of food is available at Abudan Square, but the commercialization mentioned by netizens is gone, and there are very few people, it's very comfortable to stroll around, and you can take pictures casually 3⃣️There are many projects in the scenic area, popular camel riding (80 yuan/person), glider, desert car, it was a bit cold and I just rode a camel and left, the scenery is really good

Friends going to Korla must go to 'Luobu Village', but I tell everyone with the experience of buying two tickets, don't rush into Luobu Village, it's more attractive to drive into 'Luobu Naor National Wetland Park' from the side!!! 'Luobu Village' and 'Luobu Naor National Wetland Park' are in the same location. The village takes a shuttle bus from the visitor center to visit, and the wetland park drives in from the side door to visit; the wetland park is larger and more primitive, I personally think it's okay to go directly to the wetland park! 🔸 Luobu Naor National Wetland Park 200r/car The newly opened scenery, the original ecology is to buy tickets in the temporary shed at the entrance of the Luobu Village Visitor Center. It is a 46km ring road for self-driving, including several Populus euphratica landscapes. It is quite primitive. You can play as you like. The pictures are basically taken here. I personally think the experience is far better than Luobu Village 🔸 Luobu Village 49/person The planned scenic area, there are many man-made scenes on the Populus euphratica forest, plus too many tour groups, the experience is not very good, the photos are not very good, the more highlights are the 'Goddess Lake' behind, which is more characteristic than the previous scenic spots~

I really don't recommend staying inside the scenic areas when visiting Bayingolin in autumn! Accommodation in scenic areas is limited and tends to be pricey 😭 For this trip, I made the Howard Johnson Life Hotel (Museum Branch) in Korla my base. The roads to and from the various scenic spots were smooth, there were tons of dining options in the city, and it made the whole trip so much more enjoyable. 📆 2–3 day itinerary reference 🔹 Day 1 | A leisurely city stroll Bayingolin Museum → Peacock River → Korla Grand Bazaar Start by relaxing in the city and soaking up the local vibe. 🔹 Day 2 | Exploring the desert poplars Luoburen Village See the golden poplars and experience the desert scenery along the Tarim River. 🔹 Day 3 | Exploring Bosten Lake Lotus Sea World → Egret Island → Dahekou Take a walk along the lake; the vast reed marshes create such a great atmosphere. 💡 Travel tips ✔️ Use the Howard Johnson Life Hotel in Korla as your hub to avoid staying in basic guesthouses in the scenic areas every day ✔️ There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in autumn, so remember to bring a warm jacket ✔️ It's recommended to set off early for Luoburen Village and Bosten Lake to avoid the harsh afternoon sun No need to keep moving hotels—enjoy a comfortable trip exploring the lakes and poplars of Bayingolin 🌾

Following Trip.com's recommendations, I chose a one-day trip to explore the Taklamakan Desert and Luoburen Village in Korla. The round trip is about 180 km, but I didn't feel tired at all in the car; the scenery along the way already built up my anticipation 😌. The most exciting part of the trip for me was the magnificent convergence of the desert and the Tarim River at the end (the section known as the Goddess River). Golden sand dunes accompany the river, and every photo I took looked like a masterpiece 📸. Luoburen Village also holds many surprises. You can browse various unique trinkets and even meet a local centenarian and hear him tell stories about the village, which has a unique charm~ On the way, we also passed by the Great Wall Museum in Yuli County. It's a great stop along the route, with rich content that's well worth the time to see 👍. If you come to Korla and want to experience the desert and cultural features, this route is very well-planned. I recommend it to everyone~

When visiting Bayingolin, Xinjiang for the autumn scenery, I really don't recommend staying in the scenic areas! Facilities are limited and options are scarce. Make the Howard Johnson Life Hotel Korla your base, and trips to Bosten Lake and Lop Nur Village will be a breeze✨ ✅Day 1 | First encounter with Korla: Understanding the history of the Western Regions Visit the Bayingolin Museum and the Bayingolin Folk Museum to learn about the stories of the Western Regions. Take a stroll along the Peacock River, then head to the Grand Bazaar in the evening to sample local delicacies and easily adjust to the time difference. ✅Day 2 | Desert quest for Populus euphratica: Heading to the Lop Nur secret realm Drive to Lop Nur Village and venture into the desert's Populus euphratica wonderland. The golden trees paired with the Tarim River create an incredible atmosphere. ✅Day 3 | A leisurely tour around the lake: Encountering reeds and autumn waters Circle Bosten Lake and visit Lotus Sea World, Bailuzhou, and Dahekou along the way. The autumn scenery of the lake and reeds is stunning. ✅Day 4 | Tracing Loulan: Encountering desert relics Explore Loulan-related sites, search for traces of the ancient Loulan civilization in the vast desert, and experience the profound historical charm of this ancient Western Regions kingdom. Staying in the city has clear advantages: plenty of dining options, complete amenities, and smooth traffic for your daily trips. When you're tired, you can return to the city for a good rest. Come to Bayingolin in the autumn without having to squeeze into crowded scenic area accommodations. This way, your travel pace is relaxed, and your overall experience is significantly upgraded🍁

If Northern Xinjiang is about mountains, lakes and endless grasslands, Southern Xinjiang is a completely different world. Here, the landscape becomes more dramatic and mysterious—vast deserts, rugged mountains, ancient cities and oasis towns surrounded by golden sand. Travelling through Southern Xinjiang feels like following the footsteps of the ancient Silk Road. Start in Kashgar Kashgar is the place that really gives you the feeling that you’ve arrived somewhere completely different. The Kashgar Old City is perfect for wandering without a fixed plan. Walk through the narrow streets, browse small shops, watch craftsmen at work and stop whenever you see something interesting. The city has a strong Central Asian atmosphere, and the food is another highlight—especially lamb skewers, naan, hand-pulled noodles and local pilaf. Don’t rush Kashgar. Spending at least a couple of nights here gives you enough time to experience the city at different times of day. The Taklamakan Desert One of the most unforgettable experiences in Southern Xinjiang is seeing the Taklamakan Desert. The sheer scale is difficult to appreciate until you’re actually there. Endless golden dunes stretch towards the horizon, with almost nothing interrupting the landscape. Driving through the desert also gives you a completely different perspective of Xinjiang. Instead of green valleys and alpine lakes, you get an enormous sea of sand. Karakul Lake & The Pamir Mountains The journey from Kashgar towards the Pamirs is one of the highlights of Southern Xinjiang. As you climb higher, the scenery changes dramatically. Blue skies, barren mountains, turquoise lakes and snow-covered peaks create a landscape that feels almost unreal. Karakul Lake is particularly spectacular, with Muztagh Ata rising dramatically in the background. This is one of those places where you don’t need many activities. Simply standing there and taking in the scenery is enough. Ancient Towns & Oasis Life Southern Xinjiang is also about the small towns scattered between the desert and mountains. Places such as Yarkand (Shache), Hotan and Kuqa offer a glimpse into the region’s Silk Road heritage. In Hotan, local markets are especially interesting. You’ll find traditional crafts, jade, dried fruits, spices and plenty of local snacks. The pace of life feels slower here, and spending time in the markets is a good way to experience everyday life beyond the major tourist attractions. Come Hungry Southern Xinjiang is a destination for food lovers. You’ll find plenty of: · Lamb kebabs · Freshly baked naan · Xinjiang-style pilaf · Hand-pulled noodles · Melons and grapes · Local dairy products · Dried fruits and nuts Don’t be afraid to eat where the locals eat. Some of the simplest-looking restaurants can serve incredibly memorable meals. Getting Around Southern Xinjiang is best experienced as a road trip, but the distances are considerable. For routes around Kashgar and the Pamirs, hiring a private driver can be more convenient, especially if you are travelling with family or a small group. If you’re driving yourself, plan carefully around fuel stops and accommodation. Some areas are extremely remote, and there may be long stretches between towns. Also keep some flexibility in your schedule. Mountain weather can change quickly, and some scenic areas may require additional time. A Few Practical Tips Bring layers; Southern Xinjiang can be hot and dry in the desert but surprisingly cold at high altitude. Stay hydrated; The dry climate can make you feel dehydrated without realising it. Take your time in Kashgar. The old city is best explored slowly rather than treated as a quick photo stop. Carry some cash. Mobile payment is widely used, but having some cash is still useful in smaller towns and markets. Don’t underestimate the distances. Southern Xinjiang is enormous. A route that looks simple on a map can take most of the day. More Than Just a Desert What I enjoyed most about Southern Xinjiang was the contrast. One day you can be walking through a lively old town, surrounded by food stalls and traditional architecture. The next day you’re driving through an empty desert, followed by towering mountains and a turquoise alpine lake. It is a journey through desert, mountains, culture and history all at once. Northern Xinjiang may steal the spotlight with its postcard-perfect lakes and forests, but Southern Xinjiang has something different—a sense of history and adventure that stays with you long after the journey ends. If you’re looking for a trip that combines scenery, culture, food and the romance of the ancient Silk Road, Southern Xinjiang is definitely worth exploring. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle #southernxinjiang #xinjiang #kashgar #kashgaroldcity #pamirmountains #karakullake #taklamakandesert #silkroad #travelfreak
