Yuping travel guide and discussion

Finally saw the legendary Fanjingshan, acclaimed by National Geographic, with my own eyes! The ethereal beauty, straight out of the camera, is truly 100 times more stunning than any online photo or description 🥹 With rolling seas of clouds and towering peaks, walking through the mountains feels like stepping into a fantasy drama's Castle in the Sky. The iconic Red Cloud Golden Summit is both thrilling and spectacular. The suspension bridge spans the two peaks, with clouds swirling beneath your feet—the atmosphere is absolutely unmatched. The ancient Mushroom Stone stands atop the peak, making every snapshot look like a masterpiece. Catching the Buddha's light in the sea of clouds after the rain is a rare and healing sight. I've put together a hassle-free travel guide! For transportation, it's best to take the high-speed rail to Tongren South Station, then carpool directly to the scenic area—it's super convenient. Be sure to book your tickets at least 1 day in advance, as they are hard to get during peak season. For beginners, just get the combo ticket including admission, cable car, and shuttle bus to avoid exhausting yourself. Recommended effort-saving route: Shuttle bus > Cable car up > Mushroom Stone > Old Golden Summit > Red Cloud Golden Summit. You can easily finish the whole trip in 5 hours. For attire, light-colored clothing and non-slip sneakers are best. The temperature difference at the summit is significant and it can be very windy, so remember to bring a jacket and a raincoat. Avoid peak holiday crowds; your chances of seeing the sea of clouds are much higher if you head up early in the morning! If you come to Guizhou, you must visit Fanjingshan for a date with this fairyland in the clouds 🌫️

Finally visiting Fanjing Mountain, hailed as divine by National Geographic! Only after reaching the summit did I realize that no filter can capture its ethereal beauty. The breathtaking mountains, rivers, and sea of clouds are beyond what any camera or words can reproduce. The red cloud golden peak standing in the sky is the essence of the entire mountain. Two strange peaks face each other, with a sky bridge suspended over the abyss. Walking across it feels like entering a mystical realm where you can almost touch the rolling sea of clouds. The billion-year-old mushroom stone stands tall on the summit, weathering storms yet still upright. Every photo taken here is a masterpiece. Strolling along the cliffside plank road and through the primeval forest, the fresh scent of plants fills the air, offering an immersive escape from the city’s noise. The clearest and most stunning time is the morning after rain, when mist drifts over the ridges and the mountains appear faint and mysterious. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter a romantic Buddha’s light. Tips for an effortless trip: take the high-speed train directly to Tongren South Station, then a one-hour carpool to the scenic area! Be sure to book tickets one day in advance. Beginners should get the cable car package. Recommended easy route: sightseeing bus + cable car up the mountain → mushroom stone → old golden peak → red cloud golden peak → Cheng’en Temple for the return trip. The whole trip takes about 5 hours and is easy, not tiring. Wear light-colored clothes with non-slip hiking shoes, and bring a windbreaker and raincoat to easily enjoy the sky city✨

You know that feeling! I was instantly hooked after seeing the National Geographic photo of Fanjingshan. I traveled to Jiangkou, Tongren, and finally saw this City in the Sky floating above the sea of clouds. With ancient rock formations and clouds wrapping around the mountain, standing on the Red Cloud Golden Summit with a sea of clouds churning beneath my feet—the impact is something photos can't even capture half of 🏔️ 📍Location: Jiangkou County, Tongren, Guizhou | Fanjingshan (East Gate is the main entrance, 90% of tourists' first choice) 🚗Transportation suggestions ✅High-speed rail: Prioritize arriving at Tongren Station. Upon exiting, go to the bus station opposite the exit and take the direct scenic shuttle for CNY 35 per person. The trip takes about 1 hour directly to the Fanjingshan East Gate Tourist Center. Do not choose Tongren South Station; it is very far and requires a complicated transfer. ✅Driving: Navigate to "Fanjingshan East Gate Tourist Center" and take the Hangrui Expressway to the Jiangkou exit. Parking is capped at CNY 30 per day. During peak season, it is recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. ⚠️The East and West gates are 50 km apart, and tickets are not interchangeable. Beginners should enter through the East Gate; the West Gate is only suitable for hardcore hikers. ✅Local shuttle: There are micro-loop buses in Jiangkou County that can take you to the scenic area for CNY 5. You can stop by Yunshe Village and Zhaisha Dong Village along the way. Be cautious of unlicensed taxis on the roadside, as they tend to be overpriced. ✅Park transport: The East Gate sightseeing bus is CNY 48 round trip for the 9 km mountain road. It is mandatory; you cannot walk. The cable car is CNY 140 round trip. If you have average stamina, take the cable car to save a lot of energy for climbing. 🏨Where to stay ✅Zhaisha Dong Village | Best value! A 10-minute drive from the East Gate. There are stilted house homestays, costing CNY 120–220 per night in the off-season. Many owners lend out hiking poles for free, and there are farm-style restaurants right outside. It's super comfortable to come back from the mountain and eat a hot meal. ✅Jiangkou County | Foodie recommendation, CNY 80–180 per night. There are many hotel options and dense clusters of restaurants. Stay here if you want to eat authentic local food. It's a 20-minute bus ride to the scenic area. ✅Near the East Gate Tourist Center | Not recommended for budget travelers. Prices are heavily inflated during peak season, starting at CNY 400. Only consider this if you want to be among the first to enter the mountain the next morning. 💰Budget reference (2 days 1 night per person, excluding major round-trip transportation) Fanjingshan package (admission + sightseeing bus + round-trip cable car) CNY 288; accommodation CNY 150; food + snacks CNY 200; short-distance bus/carpooling CNY 60; miscellaneous items CNY 50. Total is about CNY 748. If you have strong stamina, you can buy a one-way cable car ticket to save CNY 70. Students with ID get half-price admission, making it more cost-effective overall. 🍲Must-try food | Eat well even if you're tired from hiking! ✔️Jiangkou rice tofu 🍜: A local soul food snack, CNY 5–8 per bowl. Mixed with red chili oil, it's sour, spicy, and tender—perfect as breakfast before hiking. ✔️Sour soup fish: A Dong specialty! With the unique aroma of litsea cubeba and tender fish, a small pot is enough for 2–3 people, costing about CNY 45 per person. ✔️Fern root starch stir-fried with bacon: Smoked bacon paired with chewy fern root starch. It's rich in smoky flavor and goes great with rice. ✔️Shefan: Mugwort and glutinous rice steamed with bacon. It has a wild, fragrant scent and is filling, making it perfect to take up the mountain as a snack. ✔️Dried tofu + beef jerky: You can buy these as souvenirs; the more you chew, the more flavorful they get. 💡Avoid pitfalls: Prices on the mountain are very high. Try to buy water and snacks in advance at supermarkets in Jiangkou County. ✨Must-visit recommendations 1. Red Cloud Golden Summit [City in the Sky landmark] ✨ At an altitude of 2,336 meters, the peak is split in two by the Golden Knife Gorge, with a sky bridge connecting two ancient temples. The steps are very steep; you have to grab the iron chains and use both hands and feet to climb up. Once you reach the top, the sea of clouds washes over the mountain peaks—it's exactly like the National Geographic photo! ⚠️Scan the QR code at Pudu Square to make a reservation on-site. Spots are limited, so reserve as soon as you arrive. Those with a fear of heights, high blood pressure, or elderly visitors should not attempt this. 2. Mushroom Stone 📸 A rock formation weathered over 1 billion years, standing tall with a wide top and narrow base. It's the iconic photo spot of Fanjingshan. The morning light is soft, making it easy to take atmospheric photos. Next to it is the Ten Thousand Books Cliff, with layers of rock that are super spectacular. 3. Old Golden Summit The highest peak within the open area of the scenic spot, at an altitude of 2,494 meters. There are fewer people than at the Red Cloud Golden Summit. Standing here, you can take a full panoramic shot of the Red Cloud Golden Summit. When the weather is good, the rolling mountains + sea of clouds will leave you stunned. The steps are steep, so climb according to your ability. 4. Zhaisha Dong Village (Free) A Dong ethnic village at the foot of the mountain, with stilted houses and wind-and-rain bridges. In the evening, smoke curls from the chimneys. Take a walk here after visiting Fanjingshan to experience the quiet atmosphere of the Dong village. 5. Yunshe Village (Optional) Known as "China's No. 1 Tujia Village," it features pastoral streams and a quiet, healing ancient village. If you have enough time, you can arrange half a day to stroll around slowly. 📌Travel tips 1. Fanjingshan has a daily visitor limit. You must make a real-name reservation in advance via the "Fanjingshan Tourist Area" WeChat official account! During peak season, grab tickets 3–7 days in advance. There are almost no same-day tickets available on-site. Enter the park by swiping your ID card. The East Gate stops entry at 3:00 PM, so don't be late. 2. The temperature difference on the mountain is huge! Even in midsummer, bring a thin windbreaker or a light down jacket. The UV rays are very strong, so be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. 3. Wear non-slip sports shoes for hiking. Hiking poles are cheaper to buy at the foot of the mountain. The entire mountain has wooden boardwalks, and there are no electric carts, so you have to walk the whole way. 4. Protect the mountain forest. Take all your trash with you. Do not feed or disturb the small animals in the mountains, and follow the scenic area regulations. 5. Spots for the Red Cloud Golden Summit are limited, so try to enter the park early. The day after rain has the highest probability of seeing a sea of clouds, but the mountain roads will be slippery, so be careful when walking. The moment I saw the Red Cloud Golden Summit piercing through the sea of clouds, I finally understood why it was chosen by National Geographic. It's not overly commercialized; the mountain is quiet yet powerful. When the clouds roll in, the whole mountain looks like it's floating in the air. If you want to escape the city hustle and bustle and head to a fairyland, Fanjingshan in Jiangkou is truly worth the trip.

Deep within the Wuling Mountains lies a hidden realm sealed away by time—Mount Fanjingshan. It is a miracle sculpted by 1.4 billion years of geological evolution, a pure land in the hearts of many, and a real-life city in the sky. Take the cable car through the vast primeval forest, and you will be greeted by lush greenery. Walk slowly up the wooden boardwalk; the mountain breeze carries the scent of plants, clouds gather and disperse, and the mountains appear and disappear in the mist, as if stepping into the fantasy world described in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The most breathtaking sight is the Red Clouds Golden Summit. A unique peak rises abruptly into the air, split in two by the Golden Blade Gorge, with a sky bridge spanning across it. On one side is the Sakyamuni Hall, representing the past; on the other is the Maitreya Hall, symbolizing the future. Climbing up with hands and feet on iron chains, the stone steps are nearly vertical, and every step is a challenge. The moment you reach the top, the sea of clouds surges beneath your feet, and thousands of mountains spread out before your eyes. All the fatigue of the climb is blown away by the mountain breeze. The Mushroom Stone stands quietly on the summit, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. It looks precarious, yet it has stood firm through wind and rain for hundreds of millions of years. Beside it, the Ten Thousand Books Cliff features layers of stacked rocks, resembling open ancient books that record the long history of the earth. If you are lucky, amidst the swirling clouds and mist, you might encounter the rare Buddha's light, a dreamlike and ethereal sight. This place offers more than just majestic mountains and rocks; it hides a subtle sense of Zen. The sound of temple bells drifts on the wind, free from the hustle and bustle of the city, with only the sound of pine waves, the wind, and flowing clouds. Standing on the summit and looking into the distance, you finally understand what it means to be far from the noise of the world. When you come to Mount Fanjingshan, there is no need to rush. Watch the clouds rise and fall, listen to the whispers of the empty mountains, and leave all your worries to this sea of clouds. 📍Location: Mount Fanjingshan, Tongren, Guizhou 🎫Tips: The Red Clouds Golden Summit requires a separate reservation. The temperature at the summit is low, so bring a light jacket and remember to wear non-slip shoes for the climb

Before coming here, I always thought the sea of clouds and the Golden Summit of Fanjingshan were just "photoshopped" images with heavy filters. It wasn't until I stepped on the rocks at the summit that reality taught me a lesson. A World Natural Heritage site and a magical place repeatedly featured by National Geographic—it really lives up to the hype. This isn't just a mountain; it's a secret realm straight out of a fantasy novel. The moment I reached the top, the soreness in my legs, the panting in my lungs, and the restlessness in my heart were all swept away by the mountain breeze. Beneath my feet were rolling waves of clouds, and the solitary peak pierced the sky like a sword. The ethereal atmosphere was palpable. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the fleeting Buddha's light in the sea of clouds, instantly understanding the state of mind of the ancients when they wrote about "fairy mountains." 📍Location: Fanjingshan Scenic Area, Jiangkou County, Tongren City, Guizhou Province 🎫Admission: Ticket + sightseeing bus approx. ¥158; cable car one-way ¥70, round-trip ¥140 ⏰Hours: 7:00 AM–6:00 PM. We recommend setting aside 6–8 hours to explore at a leisurely pace. 🚄Transport: Take a high-speed train to Tongren Station or Tongren South Station, then transfer to a direct bus or carpool (1–1.5 hours). For driving, navigate directly to "Fanjingshan Ecotourism Area." 👉Recommendation: We highly recommend the Jiangkou East Gate for its complete facilities and smooth route. The Yinjiang West Gate is for hardcore hikers. 5 must-visit spots: 1️⃣ Red Clouds Golden Summit (altitude 2,336m) The soul of the mountain. The solitary peak is split in two by a gorge, with two ancient temples hanging on either side of the summit, connected by a suspended stone bridge. You have to hold onto the iron chains tightly and use both hands and feet to climb. Reaching the top feels like traveling into a "City in the Sky" from a fantasy drama. 2️⃣ Mushroom Stone The icon of Fanjingshan. It's wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, and it hasn't fallen despite billions of years of wind and rain. When the clouds and mist drift over, it's partially hidden. This is the same photo spot featured in National Geographic—every shot is a masterpiece. 3️⃣ Cliffside Plank Road A path built along the sheer cliff, with rock walls on one side and deep valleys on the other. Walking through the primeval forest, the negative oxygen ions are so abundant you might feel "oxygen drunk." Everywhere you look is healing green. 4️⃣ Sea of Clouds + Buddha's Light Best seen after rain when the sky clears, between 6:30 AM–8:00 AM, or 9:00 AM–11:00 AM. The sea of clouds rolls over the ridges, leaving only the peaks exposed. If you're lucky, you might see the colorful Buddha's light halo. 5️⃣ Cheng'en Temple + Ten Thousand Books Cliff A Ming Dynasty imperial temple. The rock layers next to it are stacked like ten thousand volumes of scriptures—a double impact of culture and nature. Effort-saving one-day itinerary: Sightseeing bus → Cable car up → Mushroom Stone (take photos first while the light is good) → Old Golden Summit for a panoramic view → Red Clouds Golden Summit (challenge the suspended bridge) → Cheng'en Temple → Walk down the Cliffside Plank Road → Cable car + sightseeing bus back 💡Travel tips: · Wear non-slip sneakers; you really have to "climb" some sections · The summit is much colder than the base; bring a thick jacket even in summer · Best season: April–May and September–October, when the chances of seeing the sea of clouds and Buddha's light are highest · Red Clouds Golden Summit has visitor limits. Queuing is common on holidays, so arrive early · Best photo spots: Pudu Square, Old Golden Summit viewing platform Standing at the summit and looking down, I finally understood why National Geographic is so captivated by this magical mountain—it turns out that a "City in the Sky" really does exist in reality.

The scenic area opens at 8:30 AM, so I recommend entering early. 🚡 Tour route (no-backtracking version): Scenic area entrance sightseeing bus → "That Era" Old Street → Mercury Mine Museum → Underground Great Wall Mine Tunnel → Cliff glass skywalk → Cliff pool 🎞️ "That Era" Street The soul of the ancient town! A real-life recreation of mining life in the 50s and 60s—grain and oil shops with sacks piled at the door, old post offices with green iron mailboxes, staff wedding rooms with red "double happiness" bedding, supply and marketing cooperatives filled with enamel cups and thermos bottles... You can walk into every scene and take photos. You can rent educated youth/work uniforms for 30–50 yuan per set; put them on and travel back in time instantly. 🕳️ Underground Great Wall Mine Tunnel An otherworldly place with a constant temperature of 16°C❄️ It's 35°C outside in July, melting hot, but the moment you enter the mine, it's like "entering winter"! The kilometer-long mine tunnel is relit with neon lights, and you can see the marks left by miners on the rock walls, giving it a "Journey to the Center of the Earth" vibe. Definitely bring a light jacket; you'll freeze if you go in wearing short sleeves😭 🌉 Cliff glass skywalk About 200 meters long, suspended above the mine pit, with abandoned mining platforms visible through the transparent glass. The layered karst peaks in the distance look like an ink painting. Those with a fear of heights should be careful, but it's truly worth it! 🏊 Cliff pool An open-air pool built on the edge of a cliff. Looking down from the edge, it's a deep valley hundreds of meters below. There aren't many places in the country where you can experience "swimming in mid-air," and the atmosphere for photos is amazing. 🍽️ Lunch: People's Commune Canteen. Rice served in enamel mugs. Recommended: Cinnabar tofu, Wanshan rice cakes, smoked bacon. 30–40 yuan per person. They have customized 9 scripts and scenes, equipped with makeup, directing, filming, and editing services. You transform from a spectator to a "protagonist," which is super fun. In the afternoon, visit the Mercury Mine Industrial Heritage Museum to see ore specimens, old mining equipment, and old photos of the mining area. Systematically learn about the history of cinnabar culture and the rise and fall of the Wanshan Mercury Mine. The stories behind "Patriotic Mercury" are truly moving. In the evening, go to Fangxia Yunju to have tea and take photos. The courtyard built against the mountain is elegant, and you can see green mountains and beautiful scenery right outside the window. It's the perfect place to zone out. Day 4 | Relaxed wrap-up Sleep in, stroll slowly through the old street, buy cinnabar souvenirs, and have a bowl of sour soup fish as a farewell lunch🍜 High-speed rail back in the afternoon, Zhusha Ancient Town Station → Chongqing West, heading home full of memories~ 🏨 Accommodation recommendations ① Zhusha Ancient Town Cliff Hotel ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Renovated from old factory buildings, full of retro vibes, clean rooms, hot shower water. Where can you go in 48 hours on the weekend? 8 small cities where you don't need to take time off. 01 Beijing Leave right after work on Friday and you can still clock in on time Monday morning. You need to book tickets for the Palace Museum 7 days in advance. ⏰ The crowds are smallest when it opens at 8:30 AM. Head straight to the Hall of Supreme Harmony Square to get empty shots. Don't squeeze through the East Palace Gate at the Summer Palace. 📍 Enter through the New Palace Gate, walk from the Seventeen-Arch Bridge to the West Causeway. In autumn, the ginkgo trees against Kunming Lake make for great photos. In summer, go in the evening; the breeze through the Long Corridor is more comfortable than air conditioning. Buy a combo ticket for the Temple of Heaven. You need to go in the morning to see the blue tiles of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests; they look gray in the afternoon backlight. ⚠️ The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Boat rentals at Beihai Park are charged by the hour. The Fangshan restaurant under the White Pagoda is expensive and mediocre. I recommend heading out the North Gate toward Shichahai instead. 🍜 The sesame seed cake with meat at Ya'er Liji is filling for 10 yuan. Great for a trip with parents, and accessible by subway the whole way. You don't need to take time off for Beijing; what you need is stamina. 02 Suzhou | Jiangsu The light at Tiger Hill is best after 4:00 PM, when the shadow of the leaning pagoda stretches long. 📍 Enter from the South Gate, see the Sword Pool, and head straight to the pagoda. Don't take the electric cart; it's only a 20-minute walk. Visit Hanshan Temple and Fengqiao together. ⏰ Go right when it opens at 7:00 AM before the bell sounds are drowned out by tourists. Admission is 20 yuan; there's an extra fee to ring the bell, but I don't recommend it—it sounds the same from outside. Choose either the Humble Administrator's Garden or the Lingering Garden. The Humble Administrator's Garden is large and spacious, while the Lingering Garden is small and refined. ⚠️ During peak season, the line for the Humble Administrator's Garden is at least 1 hour long; the Lingering Garden is much quieter and you can see the Guanyun Peak. For the Jiangnan water town vibe, go to Pingjiang Road. Don't walk on the main street; 📍 turn into Xuanqiao Lane. The bluestone road is empty, and there's an elderly woman by the river selling fox nut. 🍜 It's 10 yuan for a small bowl, fresh and sweet. Suzhou is perfect for couples to stroll around slowly. Two days is just right—no time off needed. Arrive by high-speed train on Friday night and return on Sunday night. 03 Shaoguan | Guangdong Danxia Mountain is the most underrated World Heritage site in Guangdong. 🚄 Take a bus from Shaoguan Station for 40 minutes to the mountain gate. Don't trust the touts at the entrance who say they'll take you on a shortcut; they'll actually just add 20 minutes to your trip. ⏰ To see the sunrise at Zhanglao Peak, you need to get up at 4:00 AM and climb the stairs for 40 minutes. It's windy at the top, so bring a jacket. If you don't want to climb, take the cable car. It's 60 yuan one way—saves energy, but you'll miss the "Thread of Sky." The Yangyuan Stone and Yinyuan Stone are on 2 separate routes, so don't try to do both in 1 day. I recommend Zhanglao Peak and Xianglong Lake on the first day, and Yangyuan Stone on the second. ⚠️ The stone steps are slippery when it rains, so wear non-slip shoes—don't wear white sneakers. Eat free-range chicken at the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain. 🍜 It costs about 50 yuan per person, half the price of the food on the mountain. Perfect for hiking enthusiasts. Two days and 1 night is just right—no time off needed. 04 Longnan | Gansu Wenxian Tianchi is hidden in the mountains. 🚄 It's a 2.5-hour drive from Longnan Station, so I recommend driving yourself or carpooling. ⏰ Arrive by 10:00 AM while the mist is still on the lake; it looks like a piece of green jade. Don't expect many facilities. 📍 The boardwalk around the lake takes 2 hours to walk, and there are no supply points along the way, so bring your own water. The altitude is 2,400 meters, so walk slowly and don't jump around. Guan'e Valley is more worth visiting; it's divided into Guanzhu Valley and E'man Valley. E'man Valley has fewer people and more waterfalls. 📸 You won't have to fight for a spot to take photos. ⚠️ Cell signal is poor in the valley, so download offline maps in advance. For food in Longnan, try the noodles. 🍜 Potato paste and pickled vegetable noodles at small street-side shops are fine. Don't go to the ones at the entrance of the scenic area; they are expensive and taste bad. Perfect for people who like the wild. Two days is a bit rushed, but enough for a weekend. No time off needed—fly to Longnan on Friday and return on Sunday. 05 Tongren | Guizhou You need to book the Fanjingshan Tourist Area 3 days in advance. ⏰ Be in the first group to enter the mountain at 7:00 AM to cut the cable car wait time in half. The stairs at the Red Cloud Golden Summit are almost vertical; if you're afraid of heights, don't force it. The Mushroom Stone is the landmark, but I think the Ten Thousand Books Cliff halfway up the mountain is better. 📍 Walk to the left from the upper cable car station; it's less crowded. ⚠️ The weather at the summit changes in an instant. Raincoats are more useful than umbrellas—they cost 5 yuan at the foot of the mountain and 20 yuan on the mountain. It takes 1.5 hours from downtown Tongren to Fanjingshan. 🚄 There are direct shuttle buses from Tongren Station. You can stay 1 night at the Zhaisha Dong Village at the foot of the mountain. 🍜 Sour soup fish and rice tofu cost about 40 yuan per person. Suitable for people with good stamina. If you're bringing elderly people, take the cable car up and down—don't climb. Two days and 1 night, no time off needed. Arrive in Tongren on Friday night and return on Sunday. 06 Ningbo | Zhejiang Tianyi Pavilion and Moon Lake are best visited in the morning. ⏰ Go in right when it opens at 9:00 AM. Sitting for a while under the camphor tree by the library is more comfortable than walking through the exhibits. 📍 Moon Lake Park is free, and it takes 40 minutes to walk around the lake. The Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area is in Fenghua. 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Ningbo Station to Fenghua for 15 minutes, then take a taxi. ⏰ Go to Tengtou in the afternoon to see the old houses and farming experiences; it's great for kids. Qiantong Ancient Town is quieter than Wuzhen. 📍 It's a 1-hour drive from downtown Ningbo. 🍜 The "Three Treasures of Qiantong"—old tofu, hollow tofu, and dried tofu—are sold by elderly women on the street for 10 yuan a serving. ⚠️ The ancient town doesn't charge admission after 6:00 PM, but the shops are closed too, so don't go too late. Ningbo is great for families. Two days is not rushed. No time off needed—arrive by high-speed train on Friday night and return on Sunday. 07 Huangshi | Hubei Chengyue Island is in the middle of Ci Lake. ⏰ Go after 5:00 PM when the sunset hits the lake; it's where locals go for a stroll. 📍 Enter from the entrance on Hangzhou East Road and walk across the bridge for 10 minutes. The island isn't big; it takes 20 minutes to walk around. ⚠️ Don't go on a weekend afternoon; it's crowded and noisy. Weekday evenings are the most comfortable—bring a milk tea and sit by the lake to zone out. For food in Huangshi, try the Gangbing and Jinniu dried tofu. 🍜 The old shops on Jiaotong Road in the city center cost about 20 yuan per person. Perfect for people who don't want to travel far; half a day is enough. If you're only coming for 1 day, go to the Mining Park in the morning, Chengyue Island in the afternoon, and have dinner before heading back. No time off needed—it's a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Wuhan. 08 Fuzhou | Jiangxi Dajue Mountain is best visited in the summer. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 9:00 AM; you'll have to wait 1 hour for rafting. ⚠️ You will get soaked rafting, so bring a change of clothes. Lockers cost 10 yuan. If you don't go rafting, walk the canyon boardwalk. 📍 There are waterfalls and deep pools along the way, and it's cool. You can see the panoramic view from Dajue Temple at the top, but there are many stairs, so be careful if you're bringing elderly people. It takes 1.5 hours from downtown Fuzhou. 🚄 There are shuttle buses from Fuzhou Station. 🍜 Eat rice noodles and beef offal in the city; it costs about 15 yuan per person, much cheaper than in the scenic area. Perfect for people who want to play in the water. Two days and 1 night, no time off needed. Arrive in Fuzhou on Friday night and return on Sunday—your legs will still be sore when you go to work on Monday. Of these 8 places, I most recommend Shaoguan and Tongren—one for looking at mountains, one for climbing them. They're perfect for the weekend. Pick 1 and leave right after work on Friday.

☁️September–October weather + packing guide ✔️Weather: September is mostly sunny at the base, but the weather in the mountains changes quickly. It can be sunny one second and foggy or drizzly the next. ✔️Temperature: The average temperature at the base is 22°C, but it's much cooler at the summit. It's windy in the mountains, and there's a significant temperature difference between the base and the top. ✔️What to wear: Short-sleeved/light long-sleeved T-shirts + light sweatshirt + lightweight windbreaker + long pants. Non-slip hiking shoes are a must, as the wooden boardwalks get very slippery when wet. 🗺️One-day itinerary ⏰7:50 AM Arrive at the East Gate, queue for entry, and take the scenic shuttle bus into the mountain ⏰8:30–9:00 AM The shuttle bus arrives at the cable car station. Take the cable car up the mountain for views of the mountain canyons from above. The views from the cable car are fantastic, and when the clouds and mist roll in, the atmosphere is incredible. ⏰9:05–10:10 AM Exit the cable car and walk along the wooden boardwalk to Pudu Square. Register for the Red Clouds Golden Summit first. Take my advice: The steps to the Red Clouds Golden Summit are steep. If you're not physically up for it, don't push yourself—know your limits. ⏰10:15–11:20 AM Visit Cheng'en Temple first, a quiet ancient temple in the mountains, and take a short break ⏰11:25–12:40 PM Check out Mushroom Rock and Wanjuan Book Cliff, iconic landmarks of Mount Fanjingshan. Spend some time taking photos. ⏰12:45–1:50 PM Have a quick lunch near the square to recharge ⏰1:55–3:10 PM Challenge yourself with the Old Golden Summit for panoramic views of the mountains and sea of clouds. If you're tired, you can skip this and take your time exploring the Mushroom Rock area. ⏰3:15–4:20 PM Head to the Red Clouds Golden Summit. Be careful on the narrow steps and skywalks. If it's too foggy and visibility is poor, don't climb to the top. ⏰4:25–5:10 PM Return to the cable car station the same way you came, take the cable car down, and transfer to the shuttle bus back to the East Gate exit 💥Travel tips ⚠️The weather in the mountains changes quickly, so carry rain gear. The wooden boardwalks are very slippery when wet, so walk carefully. ⚠️There are many steps throughout the hike, which can be hard on your knees. Slow down when going downhill and avoid running or jumping. ⚠️Prices at the summit kiosks are on the higher side, so bring your own bottled water and light snacks like chocolate ⚠️Clouds and mist in the mountains are unpredictable. Whether you get a clear view depends on luck, so keep an open mind. ⚠️There are quite a few mosquitoes and bugs in the grass and woods. Wearing long pants can help prevent bites, and be sure to bring insect repellent. ⚠️Try to enter and exit through the East Gate. It's a well-established route that saves energy, making it the best choice for beginners.

I always thought the photos of Fanjingshan online were just filters, but after climbing to the summit, I finally understood why this "City in the Sky," certified by National Geographic, is far more stunning and healing in person than in pictures.🌫️ As Guizhou's premier World Natural Heritage site, it hides a unique, ethereal realm. With towering peaks, surging seas of clouds, and rugged rocks, the entire mountain seems to float between heaven and earth as the mist swirls—a true definition of a fairyland on earth. 🏔️ Must-visit highlights ✅ Red Clouds Golden Summit | A real-life palace in the clouds The soul of Fanjingshan! A 94m solitary peak stands in the air, split in two by a natural canyon. Two ancient temples on the summits face each other from afar, connected only by a suspended stone bridge. The nearly vertical stairs require holding onto iron chains to climb steadily. When the mist rolls in, the vast sea of clouds beneath your feet makes walking feel like strolling through the clouds—thrilling and healing. ✅ Mushroom Stone | A billion-year-old geological wonder An iconic rock formed by billions of years of weathering, its unique top-heavy shape has stood atop the mountain for millennia. Nearby, the Ten Thousand Books Cliff features layered, clear textures—a stunning work of art carved by nature that looks like a masterpiece in every photo. ✅ Sea of clouds + rare Buddha's light The best time to view Fanjingshan is when the sky clears after rain. The surging sea of clouds wraps around the mountains, with peaks appearing and disappearing, creating an incredible atmosphere. If you're lucky, you might even encounter the stunning "Buddha's light," a halo surrounding the mountains that heals all the fatigue of your journey. ✅ Pristine forest oxygen bar The entire scenic area is densely vegetated, lush and green, with an incredibly high concentration of negative oxygen ions. Stroll along the mountain trails, breathe in the fresh scent of plants carried by the breeze, escape the city noise, and immerse yourself in the relaxation of the wild. 📝 2026 stress-free travel guide 📍Address: Fanjingshan Scenic Area, Tongren, Guizhou 🚗Transportation guide It's best to take a high-speed train to Tongren South Station. Upon arrival, you can carpool or take a direct bus to the scenic area. The ride takes about 1 hour and is very cost-effective. For beginners, we recommend entering through the Jiangkou East Gate, which has sightseeing buses and a cable car—saving effort and your legs. The West Gate has no cable car and is only suitable for experienced hikers. 🎫Ticket booking The scenic area gets very crowded during peak season, so be sure to book online at least 1 day in advance! Beginners should buy the package ticket: admission + sightseeing bus + round-trip cable car. A full hike takes over 6 hours and is not recommended for casual visitors. 🗺️Best energy-saving route Sightseeing bus > Cable car up the mountain > Mushroom Stone > Ten Thousand Books Cliff > Old Golden Summit > Pudu Square > Red Clouds Golden Summit > Cheng'en Temple > Return via the same route No backtracking, and you'll hit all the core highlights in one go! 👗Clothing & travel tips 1. The temperature difference at the summit is significant, and it's very windy. Even on sunny days, bring a light jacket. Raincoats are essential for rainy days (it's too windy for umbrellas). 2. The mountain stairs are steep and narrow. You must wear non-slip sneakers; avoid high heels, sandals, and long skirts. 3. The UV rays at high altitudes are extremely strong, so take sun protection measures throughout your trip. 4. Climbing the Red Clouds Golden Summit is difficult. Those with a fear of heights or high blood pressure should proceed with caution. 5. During holidays, we recommend leaving early to avoid the crowds. A trip to Fanjingshan is the only way to truly understand the romance of Guizhou.☁️ This "City in the Sky" hidden deep in the mountains is absolutely worth the journey!

Just got back from Fanjingshan, let me start with a bit of reverse psychology: I really don't recommend going in September. Because once you've been, you'll start looking down on other mountains 😭 Why is it "not recommended" to come in September❓ 1. Too much fog, you can experience four seasons in one day. It's super ethereal, but sunny days are a matter of luck. 2. It's so uncrowded that you don't have to queue for photos; getting empty shots is too easy, missing that bustling, crowded vibe. 3. The temperature at the summit is too comfortable, around 20°C. The breeze feels like air conditioning, and you won't want to leave. 4. Tickets are too easy to book; there's no thrill of fighting for them, missing that sense of ritual. 5. Prices for guesthouses at the foot of the mountain have dropped, and the owners are too hospitable, making it easy to overeat and gain weight. Transportation Guide 🚄🚌 ✈️ Tongren Fenghuang Airport: About 90 minutes from Fanjingshan East Gate. Rideshare/carpooling is about 50–70 CNY/person. You can also take the airport bus to Jiangkou and transfer. 🚄 Tongren Station: Exit the station and go to the bus station opposite to take a direct bus to Fanjingshan. It takes about 1.5 hours, costs around 35 CNY, and buses depart on a rolling basis starting at 7:30 AM. 🚄 Tongren South Station: About 2 hours from the scenic area. Tourist shuttle services are infrequent, so regular bus or carpooling is recommended. Carpooling is about 80–100 CNY/person. 🚗 Self-driving: Navigate to "Fanjingshan East Gate Tourist Center." Parking is relatively ample in September, but don't arrive exactly at opening time. Ticket Information 🎫 Book via the official WeChat account "Fanjingshan Ecological Tourism Zone." East Gate and West Gate tickets are not interchangeable. September is still peak season: admission is 100 CNY/person, round-trip sightseeing bus is 20 CNY/person, round-trip cable car is 140 CNY/person (one-way 70 CNY). Discounts available for students, seniors, etc. Entry is time-slotted, starting at 7:00 AM. Highly recommend East Gate + cable car to save energy. The cable car ride is about 20 minutes, followed by a 40–60 minute hike to Mushroom Stone. Must-visit Attractions 📍 · Red Cloud Golden Summit: Requires climbing with hands and feet. You can occasionally see red clouds at dawn or dusk. · Mushroom Stone: A geological landmark. Looks like a giant mushroom from afar; great photo spot. · Old Golden Summit: Elevation 2,494 meters. Offers a wider view but is physically demanding. · Cheng'en Temple: An ancient Ming Dynasty temple where you can take a short break and refuel. · Wanjuan Book and Fantian Seal: Clusters of strange rocks and stones, best viewed from a distance. · Cable car: Passing through the clouds feels like being on the set of a fantasy drama. Remember to sit by the window. One-day Itinerary 🗺️ 7. 30 AM: East Gate security check, try to catch the earliest batch. 8. 00 AM: Take the sightseeing bus, about 20 minutes to the lower cable car station. 8. 30 AM: Cable car up the mountain, walk the forest boardwalk after getting off. 9. 40 AM: Arrive at Mushroom Stone, take photos first; if it's foggy, wait for the wind. 10. 10 AM: Queue at the foot of Red Cloud Golden Summit; it's faster to climb when there are fewer people. 11. 00 AM: Reach the summit, hurry to see the sea of clouds and distant mountains. 12. 00 PM: Descend to the area near Cheng'en Temple for a packed lunch; bringing your own food is safest. 1. 00 PM: If you have energy, climb the Old Golden Summit; if not, head back. 2. 30 PM: Take the cable car down, return to the tourist center by 3:30 PM. Food Recommendations 🍜 Jiangkou rice tofu, She rice, Jiangkou radish pork, sour soup fish, matcha buns/ice cream, stir-fried bracken cake with cured meat, and beef noodles. The area around Fanjingshan is a source of matcha ingredients, so try the matcha-flavored snacks. It's recommended to eat in Jiangkou County or Zhaisha Dong Village, as it's much cheaper than inside the scenic area. Accommodation Recommendations 🏡 Zhaisha Dong Village at the foot of the mountain: Many guesthouses, close to the East Gate, with Dong ethnic customs in the evening. Jiangkou County: More hotel options, high cost-performance, suitable for an early departure the next day. There is no accommodation inside the scenic area. Don't believe the "stay at the summit to watch the sunrise" scams. Tips to Avoid Pitfalls ⚠️ 1. Weather is luck-based: September is foggy, Red Cloud Golden Summit might be shrouded in fog. Stay calm and wait for the wind. 2. Don't wear sandals or flip-flops. Climbing to the summit requires hands and feet; non-slip shoes are important. 3. The summit is 5–10°C cooler than the foot. Bring a windbreaker or a light raincoat. 4. Book early bird slots; if you are late, you may be asked to queue again. 5. Don't mix up the East and West Gates. The West Gate involves strenuous hiking and takes a long time; not recommended for average tourists. 6. Cable car queues peak between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM; try to catch the earliest batch. 7. Sausages and drinks on the mountain are expensive. Carry your own water, chocolate, and bread. 8. Don't trust "no-queue" or "internal access" offers from unlicensed drivers; they are all scams. So, really don't go to Fanjingshan in September, I'm afraid you'll want to retire on the spot once you've been ✨

I'm obsessed! No filters needed for these raw photos 😭 I've always been inspired by National Geographic to visit Fanjingshan in Jiangkou, Guizhou. Only after arriving did I realize: reality is a hundred times more breathtaking than in photos! Clouds drift over the peaks, and strange rocks seem to float in the clouds—it's truly a real-life "City in the Sky." It's not just the sacred mountains and sea of clouds; there are also ancient villages, streams, and the vibrant life of the Dong ethnic villages. It's incredibly healing! 📍Location: Jiangkou County, Tongren, Guizhou A hidden treasure of a small town deep in the Wuling Mountains, and home to the heart of Fanjingshan. Ethereal landscapes + pristine ancient villages + off-the-beaten-path gems. Avoid the crowds and enjoy the gentle mountains and sea all to yourself! 🚗Transportation guide | Beginner-friendly 🚄High-speed rail: Aim for Tongren Station, then transfer to a bus for a 1-hour direct ride to Jiangkou County. It's stress-free. ✈️Flight: Land at Tongren Fenghuang Airport, then charter a car or take a tourist shuttle directly to Jiangkou. 🚗Self-driving: Highways lead directly to the county. The roads are smooth and easy to drive. It's only a 15-minute drive from the county to the East Gate of Fanjingshan, with healing forest scenery along the way. The attractions in the county are scattered, so self-driving or carpooling is the best way to travel. You can stop whenever you want and set your own pace, which saves much more time than taking the bus. 🏨Accommodation picks | Two ways to stay without any regrets 1. Just returned from Fanjingshan! Visiting in August was both healing and easy to get tripped up by ✨ There are too many overly filtered photos online, so I organized a truly real August summer guide Weather, lines, what to wear, reservations, and pitfall avoidance are all based on firsthand experience If you're planning an August trip, copy this nanny-level checklist and avoid 90% of wrong turns ✅ 💡Real on-the-ground feel for visiting Fanjingshan in August ▪️ The top spot in Guizhou for escaping the heat! Hot and stuffy at the foot of the mountain, but very cool at the summit—natural air conditioning is so comfortable ▪️ The weather changes a lot: sunny, foggy, and sudden showers switch randomly, sometimes changing every 10 minutes ▪️ Summer is the busiest time of year, and queues for the cable car and the Golden Summit are very long—don't oversleep ▪️ High chance of a sea of clouds! But fog is also common, so seeing the full view depends on luck ▪️ Overall not hard on the legs! Choose the right cable car route and even seniors, kids, and lazy travelers can enjoy it easily 🎫August ticket essentials | 90% of people mess this up ⚠️Important: there is no on-site ticket sales in August! No scalper insider tickets! Daily capacity is limited to 8,000 people, and you must make an official reservation 3–7 days in advance If you wait, it will sell out and you'll make a wasted trip! ▪️ Must-buy combo: main entrance ticket + sightseeing shuttle (CNY 20 round-trip, must buy) + cable car (CNY 140 round-trip) ▪️ Best entry time is the earliest batch at 7:00 AM After 9:00 AM, cable car lines start at 1.5 hours, so going early not only avoids queues but also lets you see the morning sea of clouds ▪️ Hongyun Golden Summit releases extra limited tickets on-site Reserve it as soon as you get off the cable car! If you're late there may be no slots and you'll have to come back the next day 🚗Transport and parking tips ▪️ For high-speed rail, use Tongren station! Don't buy tickets to Tongren South station—it is very far from the scenic area ▪️ If driving, navigate to Fanjingshan East Gate (the only main entrance) The west gate has short open hours, difficult roads, and poor scenery—do not go through the west gate ▪️ East gate parking caps at CNY 30 per day. Spaces are tight on August weekends; aim to arrive before 7:00 AM 🏨Where to stay ✅First choice: Zhaisha Dong Village in Jiangkou County / guesthouses at the mountain base 10 minutes from the park entrance, so you won't have to rush in the morning the next day; great value Buy water and trekking poles at the mountain-base guesthouse supermarket—about half the price of the park entrance shops ❌Avoid: Do not stay in Tongren downtown! The round-trip to the park is 1 hour, wasting time and energy 🗺️Easy August route | no special forces required, no pitfalls Enter through the east gate → sightseeing shuttle → cable car up → Mushroom Stone core area → Cheng'en Temple → prioritize reserving Hongyun Golden Summit (if your stamina is low, choose Old Golden Summit) → boardwalk hike to breathe fresh air → cable car down Key spots tested on site 🏔️ Hongyun Golden Summit The soul landmark of Fanjingshan! Extremely crowded in August, 1-hour queues are common The steps are steep and narrow, chains get very hot—those afraid of heights, seniors, and kids should assess their ability The view from the top over the sea of clouds and surrounding mountains is incredibly awe-inspiring 🪨 Mushroom Stone A signature photo spot and year-round favorite for pictures, shrouded in mist and very ethereal August has more clouds and fog, giving it an even more otherworldly atmosphere than on sunny days 🏯 Cheng'en Temple A quiet ancient temple in the mountains—great for resting and cooling off when you're tired, few people and very peaceful 👗What to wear in August | essential do-not-rules (very important) ▪️ Do not wear skirts, sandals, or flip-flops! August rains make the steps mossy and extremely slippery, so falls are very likely ▪️ Must-have non-slip sports shoes or hiking boots—most important ▪️ Big temperature differences: about 30°C and stuffy at the foot, around 15°C at the summit Short sleeves plus a thin windbreaker are standard—no need for heavy clothing ▪️ Strong sunscreen and sunglasses! UV in the mountains is intense ▪️ Bring only a raincoat! It’s very windy on the mountain and umbrellas will be ruined—umbrella use while hiking is prohibited ⚠️August-specific hazards and how to avoid them 1. Afternoon rain is guaranteed! Try to summit in the morning; fog and rain reduce visibility a lot in the afternoon and you might not see anything 2. There are lots of wild monkeys on the mountain! They will grab plastic bags, snacks, and water—put all snacks in your backpack, do not feed or provoke them 3. All cheap guides, fast-track passes, and insider slots at the park entrance are scams The signage is very clear—you don't need to pay for a guide 4. Park prices are very high Bottled water and snacks are overpriced—stock up at the guesthouse supermarket at the mountain base 5. Do not leave the main trail! Forests are damp and slippery in August, some areas have no signal, and it's easy to get lost or encounter falling rocks 6. Do not try to force your way up the 8,000 steps! August is hot and rainy, and stamina drains quickly—pure hiking will likely end in collapse halfway up 🍜Affordable local food nearby After descending, eat Jiangkou local dishes—you won't go wrong ▪️ Jiangkou rice tofu, sour soup fish, stir-fried cured pork with fern shoots ▪️ Local farmhouse portions are generous and affordable, much tastier than park restaurants 🧳August travel essentials ▪️ Non-slip sports shoes, a compact raincoat, a thin windbreaker ▪️ Power bank, small fan (essential for waiting in line) ▪️ Full sunscreen kit, insect repellent (many mountain bugs) ▪️ Small amount of snacks and bottled water ✅Final honest summary Fanjingshan in August is a misty wonderland and a cool escape from the heat 🌫️ Although you need to get up early, queue, and deal with variable weather, the morning sea of clouds, the suspended Golden Summit, and the healing mountain forest make the effort worth it when you see it with your own eyes As long as you make reservations and avoid the common pitfalls, an August visit will be an amazing experience ✨

Fanjingshan was the stop that required the most intense prep work during my entire Guizhou trip—booking rules, choosing between the East and West routes, cable car queues, and the secondary queuing system. If you don't understand any of these, you might waste a trip of hundreds of kilometers. This is a step-by-step guide to climbing the mountain, covering everything from booking tickets to heading back down. The night before the climb, I stayed in a wooden house at the foot of the East route. The whole house was built from old cedar. Opening the window revealed dark mountain silhouettes and a rushing creek. The temperature drops quickly in the mountains at night, and the quilt had that dry, sun-baked smell. The owner knew the mountain weather like the back of his hand; he told me exactly when to wake up, how many layers to wear, and which queue was fastest. He also repeatedly warned me, "The first thing to do after getting off the cable car isn't taking photos, it's scanning the QR code." That advice ended up saving me at least an hour. 🎫 Level 1: Tickets, harder to get than you think · Real-name, time-slot booking is required. During peak season, there are daily limits and almost no tickets available on-site, so be sure to book in advance through the official scenic area channels. Set an alarm for holidays. Don't trust people selling "guaranteed entry"—you won't pass the facial recognition check, and you'll just get scammed. · Tickets include admission, sightseeing bus, and cable car. The round-trip cable car is extra (approx. CNY 140, subject to official notice). The sightseeing bus is required for the winding road from the entrance to the cable car station. The cable car saves you over a thousand meters of climbing; it's recommended for average visitors. · Two entrances: The East route (Jiangkou) has a cable car and mature facilities, making it the choice for most people. The West route (Yinjiang) is known for hiking and closes earlier. The two routes are far apart; choosing the wrong one costs over an hour of driving. ⏱ Level 2: The daily schedule, just copy this (standard East route strategy) 1. 5:40 AM: Wake up. Don't hit snooze. The cable car queue is a nightmare from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Catching the earliest group up the mountain buys you a smooth experience money can't buy. 2. 6:50 AM: Arrive at the East Gate Visitor Center. After identity verification, take the sightseeing bus up the mountain. It's winding, so if you get motion sickness, sit near the front by the window. 3. 7:30 AM: Transfer to the cable car. The cabin climbs steadily. The trees below change from broad-leaved forests to dwarf forests, and clouds suddenly swallow the cables, like sitting inside cotton. 4. 8:10 AM: Exit the upper cable car station and hike up the wooden boardwalk for about 40 minutes to Pudu Square. There are many steps, so pace yourself and walk slowly. 5. 8:55 AM: Arrive at Pudu Square. The first thing to do is scan the QR code at the boardwalk entrance to book a spot for the Red Cloud Golden Summit! The system releases entry by number, and expired numbers are void. You can only book once you're on-site—this is what the owner warned me about. Book first, then explore. 6. 9:00 AM–11:00 AM: While waiting for your number, explore the surroundings: Mushroom Stone (an iconic boulder eroded by wind over a billion years, the calling card of Fanjingshan), Wanjuan Book Cliff (layers that look like a stack of upside-down celestial books), and Cheng'en Temple. You can see them all on the way without detouring. 7. If you have the energy, add the Old Golden Summit: At 2,494 meters, it has the widest view in the entire scenic area. Most of the great sea-of-clouds views are seen around here. Allow an extra 1.5 hours for the round trip. 8. When your number is called: Head to the Red Cloud Golden Summit. At 2,336 meters, the peak is split in two by the Golden Knife Gorge, with two temples at the top connected by a sky bridge. The climb is a nearly vertical iron chain ladder. You must use your hands and feet to pull yourself up, and the steepest parts only have room for half a foot. If you have a fear of heights, high blood pressure, or are with young children, don't force it. But standing on the sky bridge watching the clouds roll over the mountain top from beneath your feet makes every trembling step worth it. 9. Before 12:30 PM: Head down. Take the cable car and sightseeing bus out of the park to avoid the afternoon crowds and sudden weather changes. ☁️ Level 3: The sea of clouds, 30% effort and 70% luck When I went up that day, the mountain was full of thick fog, and my heart sank. But after 9:00 AM, the wind picked up, and the sea of clouds surged up from the valley like a receding tide. The moment the Golden Summit emerged from the fog, the whole mountaintop gasped. Here's the rule: The probability of a sea of clouds is highest on clear mornings after rain. A foggy day doesn't mean it's a lost cause; mountain winds can change things at any time. If it's raining continuously, give up—safety is more important than obsession. Keep a close eye on the mountain weather a day or two before you leave and keep your itinerary flexible. 🎒 Level 4: Gear list, you'll regret missing any of these · Bring a jacket. It's 30°C at the foot of the mountain, but only around 15°C at the top when the wind blows. · Non-slip sneakers. Don't wear new shoes. Good grip on the iron chain sections provides peace of mind. · A small amount of water and high-calorie snacks. Supplies on the mountain are limited. · Choose a lightweight raincoat; it's too windy at the top for umbrellas. Drones are prohibited throughout the area. 🧩 Three types of people, three ways to go · With seniors/children or average fitness: Take the cable car up and down. Skip the climb to the two Golden Summits. A loop around Mushroom Stone, Wanjuan Book Cliff, and Cheng'en Temple takes 4–5 hours and is still legendary. · Standard visitors: Follow the schedule above. Booking the Red Cloud Golden Summit is a must; the Old Golden Summit depends on your energy. · Hardcore hikers: Research the West route (Yinjiang) for hiking up. Trade steps for peace and quiet, but reserve a full day and start early. To be honest, Fanjingshan isn't a mountain where you can "lie back and enjoy the view." It requires you to book tickets, wake up early, and grab iron chains to climb. But when the sea of clouds unfolds before you, supporting the Golden Summit, you'll understand why so many people come despite the hassle.

Honestly, before visiting Tongren, I thought Fanjingshan was all there was. But after two days of shaky legs from climbing, I explored the surrounding area and was instantly hooked by three "hidden gems": one that turned an abandoned cinnabar mine into a nostalgic paradise, a mountain valley perfect for total relaxation, and a canyon you can boat through. This guide is for anyone who wants to extend their trip beyond Fanjingshan. I spent two nights in an industrial-style cabin near the Wanshan mining area. It featured red brick walls, shelves made from old railway sleepers, and miner's lamp-style bedside lights. Outside the window, I could see the steel corridors left over from the old mining transport days. The room contained old picture books about the history of the cinnabar mine. The owner explained that the town once thrived on cinnabar and transformed after the mine was exhausted. The mottled old slogans on the walls weren't just decor; they were real history. Hearing that gave everything I saw at Cinnabar Ancient Town the next day an extra layer of meaning. ① Cinnabar Ancient Town: A place that moves the older generation to tears and keeps young people snapping photos It's located in Wanshan District. There's even a high-speed rail station called Cinnabar Ancient Town Station, and it's just a 10-minute taxi ride from there, making it more accessible than you might think. It's open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM. Basic admission is about 80, and the sightseeing shuttle is about 20 (the park is large and spread out, so don't skip the shuttle). If you want to walk the cliffside glass skywalk, you can buy a package ticket for about 125–138, which is a better deal than buying separately. I recommend a route that avoids backtracking: Board at the visitor center and start by strolling through the "That Era" nostalgic street—the supply and marketing cooperative, old post office, barbershop, and period slogans are all restored to reflect life in the mining area back then. It feels like stepping into your parents' youth, right down to the enamel mugs on the old counters. Next, visit the Mercury Mine Museum to understand how a thousand-year-old mine supported a city. Then, head to the main attraction, the "Underground Great Wall." The open tunnel is nearly 1,000 meters long and stays at a constant 18℃ year-round. No matter how hot it is outside, you're instantly embraced by the cool air as you walk in. The walls still bear chisel marks from early manual rock drilling, and with the lighting, it feels both sci-fi and historic. Finally, walk the cliffside glass skywalk, which is suspended along the side of the mine cliff. Looking down reveals a vertical drop—it's a true test of courage. I recommend arriving in the morning; you can easily spend the whole day here. ② Yamu Valley: Give your legs a break after climbing Fanjingshan Yamu Valley is located in the Jiangkou direction, at the foot of Fanjingshan. It's best visited the day after your climb—the route is incredibly flat and gentle. You're basically strolling along a stream so clear it looks green. Pools, waterfalls, and vines turn the entire valley into a green tunnel, dotted with Tujia village gates and wind-and-rain bridges. There's no rush and no strenuous hiking; if you get tired, just sit on a rock by the stream and zone out. It's the "decompression DLC" for Fanjingshan: your legs, which were put to the test by the iron chain ladders the day before, will learn how to walk again here. Two or three hours is perfect; the key is to slow down your pace. ③ Tongren Grand Canyon: Boat into a crack in the earth It's in the Chuandong Town area of Bijiang District, about 40 minutes from the city center. Unlike the "walk-in" canyons like Maling River, this one combines water and land. First, you walk along a cliffside plank road, moving horizontally along the cliff face with unrealistically green river water below and waterfalls cascading from the top, breaking into mist. In the middle section, you switch to a boat. Looking up at the sheer, knife-like cliffs from the water, the boat almost brushes against the rock in narrow sections—the feeling of being "sandwiched by the mountains" is incredibly intense. Admission and boat tickets are usually sold as a package (around 100+, subject to daily rates), and it's most spectacular in spring and summer when water levels are high. The whole trip takes about three hours; it's not strenuous, but the scenery is dense—it's "small but mighty." 🗺 Two days and one night: Here's my itinerary 1. Day 1: Climb Fanjingshan in the morning (see my 11th post for the guide). After descending in the afternoon, head straight to Yamu Valley for a slow, relaxing walk to let your legs recover on flat ground. 2. Day 2: Spend the morning and afternoon at Cinnabar Ancient Town, covering the mine tunnels, old street, and glass skywalk. If you're leaving on the third day, squeeze Tongren Grand Canyon into that final half-day—a boat ride is a great way to wrap up your trip. 3. If you're not climbing Fanjingshan and just want a relaxing trip, splitting these three spots over two days is also very comfortable and not rushed at all. 💬 A few honest takeaways · Cinnabar Ancient Town: Great for those who love period vibes, industrial relics, and photography. If you're not into nostalgia, think twice—it's all about the emotional experience. · Yamu Valley: Perfect for those who don't want to strain their legs further and for families with elderly members. Its gentle, easy paths are its best feature. · Grand Canyon: Best for those who enjoy "canyon views from the water." If you've already planned a trip to Maling River, you don't necessarily need to do both. If you're short on time, prioritize Maling River. · These three spots are in different directions, so check schedules in advance or just carpool/charter a vehicle to save time waiting. I always thought one major attraction was enough for a city, but Tongren insists on hiding a few unexpected aces up its sleeve alongside its trump card, Fanjingshan. You come for the mountain, but after you descend, you find yourself truly falling in love with the city.

Local transportation The village is small and best explored on foot; the riverside paths are flat and easy for seniors and children. II. Four must-visit spots 1. Shenlong Pool (Core water feature) The pool water is clear and emerald green; if the water turns murky, it indicates rain. The pool flows into the 800-meter-long Longtang River, where you can wade in the water near the waterwheels and shallows, and take great photos of the reflections from the wooden boardwalk. 2. Tujia "Tube House" ancient alleys Featuring Ming and Qing dynasty wooden houses and crisscrossing bluestone streets, the earthen walls and wooden buildings are decorated with corn and chili peppers, perfect for retro-style photos. 3. Traditional papermaking workshop (Intangible cultural heritage experience) Experience the thousand-year-old craft of making paper from paper mulberry bark. You can make your own floral paper for about 25 yuan and take the finished product home as a souvenir. Other options: pounding sticky rice cakes (ciba), Tujia batik. 4. Back mountain public viewing platform Enjoy a free panoramic view of the village's pastoral scenery. It's a great spot to wait for the sunset with an open view, so there's no need to look for private paid viewing spots. III. Two suggested itineraries Itinerary 1 | Half-day short trip (On the way down from Fanjingshan) Wind and Rain Bridge → Tujia Ancient Alleys → Papermaking Workshop → Shenlong Pool + Longtang River water play → Return. The route is flat and relaxing, perfect for unwinding after hiking. Itinerary 2 | One-day slow travel (Overnight stay) Morning: Enter the village to capture the morning mist → Stroll through ancient alleys → Intangible cultural heritage craft experience → Lunch: Farmhouse dishes → Afternoon: Play in the creek → Evening: Watch the sunset from the back mountain; at night, enjoy the folk bonfire party and stargazing on clear nights. IV. Accommodation recommendations (Trip.com selected) 1) Riverside homestays in the village (Immersive experience, recommended) 1. Fanjingshan Yunshe Huanman Homestay Located next to Shenlong Pool, it offers a quiet and elegant environment with spacious, clean rooms. Being right by the creek makes it very popular for family trips. 2. Yunsheli Homestay (Fanjingshan Branch) Located by the small bridge and stream at the village entrance, the creek-side rooms are convenient for water play. It has its own courtyard, good hygiene, and offers great value during peak season. 3. Yunshe Xiaoyuan (Fanjingshan Branch) Close to Shenlong Pool with complete amenities and convenient parking. Many rooms offer great views, perfect for photography and vacations. 2) Budget-friendly alternative Stay in Jiangkou County, just a 10-minute drive away, where there are more hotel options and more affordable prices. V. Food recommendations (Local farmhouse dishes) 1. Jingshe Chuniang (In the center of the scenic area) A popular private kitchen restaurant. Their sour soup beef and stir-fried beef are highly rated. It offers home-style flavors and is frequented by both tourists and locals. Average cost: about 68 yuan per person. 2. Yunshe Chaihuoji Farmhouse A great choice for group dining. They serve freshly stir-fried wood-fired chicken paired with gray tofu and corn cakes. The portions are generous, parking is convenient, and the average cost is 77 yuan per person. ✅Must-try dishes: Tujia cured meat, sour soup river fish, Jiangkou rice tofu, and shefan (seasonal in spring). VI. Photo spots 1. Shenlong Pool wooden boardwalk: Morning mist, reflections of wooden houses and green mountains in the water; 2. Longtang River shallow waterwheel: Afternoon soft light, perfect for pastoral vibes; 3. Ancient alley bluestone road: Dappled light and shadows, perfect for retro portraits; 4. Back mountain viewing platform: Sunset panorama, capturing the full view of the village and landscape. ⏰Best time: 8:00–11:00 (fewer crowds, morning mist); 16:30–18:30 (soft backlight). VII. Tips to avoid pitfalls (Trip.com verified) 1. Wear non-slip water shoes when playing in the water, as the bottom can be slippery with moss; bring a change of clothes, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent, as there are many insects in the mountains. 2. Only play in the shallows and stay away from deep pools; keep a close eye on children at all times. 3. Do not trust private paid viewing projects; the back mountain public viewing platform is free and offers a sufficient view. 4. Be polite and ask before taking photos of local residents, and respect ethnic customs. 5. Restaurants on the main street are prone to price markups; head into the alleys for farmhouse restaurants, where the ingredients are authentic and prices are more reasonable. 6. It is recommended to book homestays in advance during peak season, as riverside rooms with views are in high demand. VIII. Classic combined itinerary (Fanjingshan + Yunshe) Day 1: Arrival → Check in to Yunshe homestay → Stroll through the ancient village + play in the water → Folk bonfire party Day 2: Wake up early to see the morning mist → Depart for Fanjingshan after breakfast for hiking. The itinerary connects smoothly without needing to backtrack.

You have to see it to believe it! The moment I saw the Red Clouds Golden Summit with my own eyes, I was completely speechless 🌫️. Located in Jiangkou, Tongren, Guizhou, this is home to the World Natural Heritage site, Mount Fanjingshan. When the sea of clouds surges, the solitary peak seems to float in the sky—it's truly a real-life "City in the Sky." Beyond the spectacular mountains, there are ancient Tujia villages and serene canyons. It's the perfect place to escape the heat and breathe in fresh air; you'll never forget your visit! 🚗 Transportation Tips 📍 Jiangkou County, Tongren, Guizhou: For the best experience, prioritize the East Gate of Mount Fanjingshan (on the Jiangkou side, where there's a cable car to save energy). The West Gate has no cable car, so it's not recommended for the average traveler. ▪️ High-speed rail: Take the train to Tongren Station, then take a tourist bus to the East Gate of Mount Fanjingshan (about a 1-hour ride). Tongren South Station is further away and not recommended. ▪️ Driving: Navigate to "Fanjingshan East Gate Tourist Center." It's accessible via highway, and the scenic area has parking. Arrive early during holidays to secure a spot. The roads from the county to the various attractions are paved and in good condition. ▪️ Within the county: Attractions are somewhat spread out, so renting a car or driving is recommended for groups. Ride-hailing and taxis are convenient in the county; carpooling to Yunshe or Yamugou costs about 20 yuan per person. 🏨 Accommodation 1. Fanjingshan East Gate/Zhaisha Dong Village: Closest to the trailhead. Homestays and hotels cost 180–320 yuan/night. Many homestays provide free hiking poles. With plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, it's convenient for local snacks and perfect for travelers who prefer a slower pace and exploring the surroundings. 3. Yunshe Village Homestays: Stay here for an immersive Tujia village experience. Prices range from 200–280 yuan. It's quiet at night, and you can fall asleep to the sound of the stream. Be sure to book in advance during holidays. 💰 Budget Reference 3 days, 2 nights: 800–1,100 yuan per person The main expenses are the Mount Fanjingshan admission ticket and cable car. Many spots in the villages and county are free, and local dining is affordable. Students and seniors should remember to bring their IDs to enjoy ticket discounts and save some money. 🍜 Must-Try Food ✔️ Jiangkou Rice Tofu: Found everywhere on the street, 5–8 yuan a bowl. Smooth, chewy, and served with a spicy and sour chili oil sauce—perfect for a pre-hike snack. ✔️ Sour Soup Fish: A local signature dish. The litsea cubeba (mountain pepper) gives it a unique aroma. The fish is tender, and one pot is enough for two or three people—fresh, tangy, and refreshing. ✔️ Stir-fried Fern Cake with Cured Meat: Farmhouse smoked meat paired with wild fern cake. It has a rich, authentic Tujia flavor and goes perfectly with rice. ✔️ She Rice: A spring seasonal delicacy made with a mix of wild vegetables, glutinous rice, and cured meat. It's incredibly fragrant. ✔️ Jiangkou Dried Tofu: Made with century-old techniques. It's delicious as a snack or stir-fried, and also makes a great souvenir. ✅ Must-Visit Attractions 🏔️ Mount Fanjingshan | The Real "City in the Sky" Be sure to take the East Gate cable car route! The highlight is the Red Clouds Golden Summit. The solitary peak is split by the Golden Sword Gorge, with a bridge connecting two Buddhist temples. When the clouds roll in, it looks like it's floating in the sky. Don't miss the Mushroom Rock, Cheng'en Temple, and the Old Golden Summit. If you're lucky enough to catch the sunrise over the sea of clouds, it's a memory that will last a lifetime. Note that entry stops at 3:00 PM, so start early. 🌿 Known as "Guizhou’s first valley" favored by National Geographic, it can’t stay hidden any longer! Here’s a complete guide for you~ 🌸 Where is Yamu Valley? It’s in Taiping Town, Jiangkou County, Tongren City, Guizhou, right at the foot of Mount Fanjing. 🌡️ At an elevation of 600 to 1,200 meters, with an average annual temperature of 16.5℃, summer feels around 23℃—very refreshing. 🚗 It’s only a 15-minute drive from the Mount Fanjing visitor center, super convenient to visit on the way. 🚗 How to get there? We’ve got you covered for both driving and public transit 🧭 For drivers, just navigate to “Yamu Valley Scenic Area.” Exit the Hangrui Expressway and follow the signs. The road conditions are good. 🚌 Take a train to Tongren Station or Tongren South Station. From Tongren bus station, catch a bus to Jiangkou County (18 CNY per person). 🚐 From Jiangkou, transfer to a bus heading to Mount Fanjing. Tell the driver to drop you off at the “Yamu Valley Scenic Area entrance” for 6 CNY. ⏰ Direct buses from Tongren Station to the scenic area run from 7 AM to 11 AM, costing 25 CNY per person. After noon, you’ll need to transfer via Jiangkou. 🚕 A taxi from Mount Fanjing or Zhaisha Dong Village costs about 20 CNY, which is affordable. 🅿️ Parking available? Don’t worry, plenty of spaces 🏠 There’s a large free parking lot right outside the scenic area entrance with space for over 400 cars. No need to book in advance. 💰 Some visitors say there might be a 20 CNY fee on holidays, but with ample parking, you can find a spot when you arrive. 🎫 Tickets and opening hours ⏰ Open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Last entry is at 4:00 PM, so don’t arrive too late. 💰 Tickets cost 80 CNY (peak season). Students and seniors aged 60–69 get half price. Children under 1.2 meters and seniors over 70 enter free. 🚌 Sightseeing shuttle costs 20 CNY round trip and is highly recommended! The 4-km mountain road hike is exhausting. 💡 Occasionally, online platforms offer a 95 CNY package including the shuttle. Check in advance. 📸 Must-visit photo spots, don’t miss these 💎 Yamu waterfall: The iconic 68-meter drop is especially stunning during high water. On sunny afternoons from 3 to 5 PM, you might see a rainbow. 🌈 Seven-color fairy lake / Five-color pool: Crystal-clear water with blue, green, and gold hues under sunlight. The best spot for water fun. 🌲 Thousand-year-old crape myrtle king: A 1,300-year-old tree that blooms pink clouds in July—truly magical. 🍃 Moss secret realm: The 300-meter trail entrance is covered in moss and vines, perfect for forest-style photos. 🌿 Ancient vine tunnel: From a drone view, it looks like a giant green dragon coiling. Definitely bring a drone if you have one. 🗺️ Nearby attractions on the way 🏔️ Mount Fanjing: 15 minutes by car from Yamu Valley. Recommended to hike in the morning and enjoy the valley in the afternoon—just right for a day trip. 🏡 Yun She ancient village: Very convenient to combine with Yamu Valley for a one-day tour. 🌉 Zhaisha Dong Village: Experience Dong culture. It’s easy to visit Yamu Valley afterward. ⚠️ Practical tips to avoid trouble 👟 Wear non-slip creek shoes or water shoes. The stone steps on the boardwalk are slippery. Regular flip-flops will make you question your life choices. 🦟 Bring mosquito repellent. The primeval forest has many bugs—don’t ask how I know. 👕 Pack an extra set of clothes and a waterproof phone pouch. You’ll get wet playing in the water, and the spring water is ice cold. 📱 Download offline maps in advance. Signal in the canyon is spotty. 🍱 Bring snacks and water. There are few shops inside the scenic area and prices are high. The local sour fish soup at the exit is worth trying. 🌧️ July and August are rainy season when the waterfall is most spectacular, but rain is possible. For empty shots, visit on weekdays. 🌳 My honest impression Honestly, Yamu Valley feels cool, quiet, and the water is great. The temperature drops several degrees as soon as you enter, surrounded by green everywhere. The air is so fresh it feels like your lungs are being cleansed. The creek water is truly clear, no wonder it’s the source of Nongfu Spring. But to be frank—the ticket plus shuttle totals 100 CNY, which isn’t cheap. If you just want to walk around and take photos, the value is average. If you’re not very fit, don’t force yourself to climb the several hundred steps to the top. It’s exhausting and there’s nothing special up there. The most comfortable way is to take the shuttle up the mountain, then walk downhill all the way out. It’s easy and you can stop to dip your feet and take photos anytime. Bring water shoes—the cool water is very refreshing. It’s great for families and kids to cool off, but if you’re looking for “breathtaking sights,” you might be disappointed—it’s a beautiful, peaceful canyon. 🧊 Best time: May to October, summer is best for cooling off. ✨ Hidden gem: Bring an empty bottle to fill with spring water—it’s sweeter than milk tea! Back from Yamu Valley? Don’t miss this refreshing cool-down~
