The area features continuous, rugged mountain ranges with only one passage running north to south, making it a strategic point during the Red Army’s two advances into Zunyi. The exhibition hall is a specialized memorial focused on the Battle of Loushanguan. It mainly highlights the Red Army’s first capture of Loushanguan from south to north just before the Zunyi Conference, and the second capture from north to south after crossing the Chishui River twice. Using the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, I managed to carve out four days to finally visit the Mianyang and Guangyuan areas I had been longing for. Although there were some regrets, I also found many pleasant surprises. Mianyang and Guangyuan are truly worth it. Day 1 Xi’an - Jiangyou - Pingwu - Mianyang Departed from Xi’an by high-speed train, arrived in Jiangyou at 9:30 AM, picked up the car and ate rice noodles, then took the Jiumian Expressway straight to Pingwu’s Bao’en Temple. Arrived in Pingwu around noon, had a casual meal to refuel, then visited the seriously overbuilt Bao’en Temple. After touring Bao’en Temple, depending on energy levels, you can visit the Bao’en Temple Museum (regrettably, we didn’t go). Then head to Mianyang, with a stop possible in Jiangyou’s Qinglian Town to eat pork intestines (there’s an old stone archway about one intersection from Qinglian Town that looks like an antique, but we were too tired to check it out). Arrived in Mianyang around 5 or 6 PM, rested a bit, then went to see the night view of Yuewang Tower. The tower is indeed quite beautiful at night. For dinner, we randomly picked a small barbecue place, and the food was pretty good. Day 2 Mianyang - Zitong - Jiange After breakfast, first checked in at Han Pingyang Fojun Que (originally planned to visit the 195 Money Tree at Mianyang Museum, but the schedule was tight and the museum is downtown, so it was skipped for now). Then went to Zitong to see the four Han Que tombs, and had hamburgers for lunch in Zitong. After lunch, continued to Jiaoyuan Temple. On a whim, stopped at Qiqushan Grand Temple to see the ancestral home of Wenchang Dijun, then went to Jiaoyuan Temple. Jiaoyuan Temple is really impressive, with exquisite clay sculptures and murals. The cultural heritage staff were very confident and proud of what they protect, and you can feel their deep love. Since we spent quite a bit of time at Jiaoyuan Temple, we arrived at Heming Mountain close to 5 PM. The stone-carved gate was already closed, but after calling and knocking, we finally got in. The stone carvings here are smaller in scale but have some interesting details. We finished all the sites planned for the day, then leisurely drove to Jiange Town for a tofu feast, preparing for Jiange Pass the next day. Day 3 Jiange Pass Guangyuan Entered from the south gate early in the morning and exited from the south gate, hiking the Bird Path and walking through Yixiantian. The whole trip took nearly 5 hours. After descending, everyone was exhausted. We skipped Zhaohua Ancient City and just wanted to go to Guangyuan for hot pot. Day 4 Guangyuan city The last day had only two sites: Qianfoya and Huangze Temple. It’s recommended to buy a combined ticket to save some money. Qianfoya is densely packed with many Buddha niches. Huangze Temple is small but the 28 caves are exquisite. Both sites’ stone carvings are worth seeing, and the national-level significance is definitely impressive. The intensity of this four-day itinerary wasn’t light, especially since we climbed a mountain in between. Due to time and energy constraints, the trendy spots in both cities were completely excluded, and the city museums were also skipped. Other smaller, less popular sites like Jiang Wan’s tomb, Wei Yan’s shrine, and Fei Yi’s tomb were also crossed off. Although we gave up quite a bit, the sites we did visit—such as Bao’en Temple, Jiaoyuan Temple, Qianfoya, and Huangze Temple—far exceeded expectations. If I had to choose again, I would prioritize these places.
