Trulli, Rione Monti

4.3/5
15 reviews
Trulli, Rione Monti is one of the best-preserved complexes of conical stone dwellings in Europe. Trulli are a unique type of dry-stone construction built without mortar, relying solely on limestone blocks stacked in layers, with conical roofs formed by stones corbelled outward layer by layer. This architectural technique dates back to prehistoric times and is still used in the Itria Valley today. Originally scattered across the countryside as farmhouses, animal shelters, or storage for farm tools, Alberobello is where these trulli are clustered together. The town preserves over 1,500 trulli, mainly concentrated in two areas: the Rione Monti district in the south features approx. 1,000 conical-roofed houses, with various handicraft shops lining the streets, and many shop owners invite visitors inside to see the interior structure of the trulli; the Rione Aia Piccola district is smaller and retains a more authentic residential character, with no commercial shops, offering a quieter atmosphere perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you wander through, you will see layers of white limestone walls and gray conical roofs.Alberobello · 563m from downtown
Trullis Zone
No. 2 of Night Attractions in Apulia

Trullis Zone

7.1
Trullis Zone is the iconic district of the town of Alberobello, densely packed with over a thousand trulli. Trulli are domed stone houses built using a dry-stone technique with limestone, featuring white limestone walls and gray conical stone roofs, arranged in rows along the hillside. The roofs of the stone houses are often painted with symbols in white lime wash, including both religious motifs and astrological patterns. Today, most of the trulli in the Trullis Zone have been converted into craft workshops, souvenir shops, restaurants, and homestays. Visitors can step inside the stone houses to experience the coolness provided by the thick stone walls and the unique domed spaces. The district is built along the hillside with winding cobblestone paths, making walking the ideal way to explore. Follow the slope to the top, and you will see the Church of Saint Anthony, a trullo-style church built in the 1920s. The highlight of visiting the Trullis Zone lies in wandering through the streets themselves: the roof curvature, lintel decorations, and wall colors of each stone house are unique, and many doorways are lined with hand-painted pottery, olive wood crafts, and local specialties. Walk to the viewing platform opposite the district for a panoramic view of the entire cluster of trulli spreading along the hillside, which is a great spot for capturing classic photos.Alberobello · 581m from downtown
Trullo Sovrano

Trullo Sovrano

4.1
Trullo Sovrano is a famous and magnificent Trullo building in Alberobello, Apulia, Italy, and is the only two-story Trullo in the town. The building was constructed in the mid-18th century, funded and built by the wealthy Perta family. Standing about 14 m tall, Trullo Sovrano is distinguished by its multiple conical roofs (about 12 in total), making it a prominent landmark in the village. It also marks a turning point in local Trullo construction techniques: the introduction of building materials like mortar (malta) innovatively broke away from the traditional "dry-stone" (mortar-free) construction method. Now open to the public as a museum, the interior is furnished in period style to showcase the lifestyle of the time, including original rooms like bedrooms and kitchens, allowing visitors to learn about the daily lives of the residents and the details of local Trullo architecture. In summer, Trullo Sovrano hosts cultural events such as small performances, poetry nights, and concerts. Trullo Sovrano is not only a tourist landmark but also a designated Italian national monument and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.Alberobello · 486m from downtown

When the weather is good, this place is absolutely beautiful, so my reminder is to make sure the sky is clear before you go, so that the photos will look good. Otherwise, if it is gray, although it is also beautiful, the photos taken will not have that fairy-tale feeling. The photos below were taken on a cloudy day, so the sky is not very blue. This place is definitely worth a visit, especially in the summer. It is very beautiful. There are many special shops, restaurants, cafes and places for handmade leather products.

That was wonderful! Ruoqing is beautiful, and her language is clear and accurate. You wouldn't even guess she's a local from Pompeii. Her descriptions of the historical sites were excellent. Thumbs up! 👍🏻👍🏻

It's about 3-4 hours from Rome and is located in Puglia, southern Italy, and is filled with beautiful, romantic white buildings that resemble the Mediterranean Sea. On sunny days, it looks great in photos. You'll need at least half a day to explore. If you're visiting from Rome, it's difficult to do it in a day, so we recommend staying at least one night. It's a hidden gem in Italy that's popular with Japanese people. If you have the time, be sure to check it out.
