26 reviews
Ananuri Fortress Complex is located on the banks of the Aragvi River, approx. 70 km north of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and adjacent to the Zhinvali Reservoir. It is a nearly unavoidable stop when traveling north along the Georgian Military Highway toward Kazbegi. Since the 13th century, this has been a castle and military fortress for the feudal lords of the Aragvi dynasty, with the existing walls and main structures mostly dating back to the 16th–17th centuries. It consists of two castles, upper and lower, and continuous walls. The lower castle with its round tower is now just ruins, while the side along the ridge, along with the square Sheupovari tower, is well-preserved. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir and the mountains on the opposite bank. The scene featuring the walls, church domes, and the surrounding landscape makes this a popular location for travelers in Georgia.Ananuri · 1.3 km from downtown

Zhinvali Water Reservoir is an artificial lake in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, formed by a hydroelectric dam built on the Aragvi River during the Soviet era. The dam is over 100m high. Construction began in the 1970s and was completed in the 1980s. In addition to generating electricity, it also supplies drinking water to Tbilisi. The reservoir's water is a turquoise blue-green all year round, and its narrow, long surface winds through the mountains. On sunny days, the lake is as smooth as a mirror, reflecting the shadows of the mountains and clouds. It is one of the classic stops on the way from Tbilisi north to Kazbegi and Gudauri via the Georgian Military Highway, and most day tours stop here for sightseeing after entering the mountains.Dusheti · 7.2 km from Ananuri

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi stands on Elia Hill on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The church adopts the traditional Georgian cross-dome architectural style, with the central dome covered in gold leaf and a gilded cross standing at the top, reaching a total height of nearly 100 m including the underground section. Thanks to its massive size and commanding position, its golden dome can be seen from almost anywhere in the city of Tbilisi. The interior of the church is also worth a close look. In the northeast corner, there is a mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary; the southeast corner houses a display case with a cross and a handwritten Bible; and the northwest corner displays a model of the holy city of Jerusalem made of mica. The church also has several chapels underground, and the main murals were painted by contemporary Georgian artists in a traditional style. In addition to the main cathedral, the entire complex includes auxiliary facilities such as a separate bell tower, a monastery, and a seminary, which are quite impressive in scale. As the mother church of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the cathedral hosts Orthodox rituals and religious activities all year round. The interior murals and mosaic decorations create a solemn religious atmosphere, and from the cathedral's platform, you can overlook the city of Tbilisi and the scenery on both banks of the Kura River.Tbilisi · 53.8 km from Ananuri

Bridge of Peace is a pedestrian bridge over the Kura River in downtown Tbilisi, featuring an arched body with a steel frame and glass canopy. The bridge is approximately 150m long, connecting Rike Park on the riverbank with the streets of the Old Town, and is also considered a pedestrian passage between the new city and the old city. It was designed by an Italian architect. The entire steel structure was prefabricated in Italy and then transported to Tbilisi for on-site assembly. After its completion in 2010, it quickly became a highly recognizable modern landmark of the city. Its rounded, undulating shape is often compared to a marine creature arching its back, which is why it earned the nickname "Shrimp Bridge."Tbilisi · 54.2 km from Ananuri

Mt Kazbek is located on the border between northern Georgia and Russia. It is a dormant volcano with a double-coned mountain body at an elevation of approx. 5,000m. It is the third-highest peak in Georgia and one of the few volcanic cones in the Caucasus Mountains. The peak is covered in snow year-round, and multiple glaciers hang from the mountain. The surrounding area features deep valleys, glaciers, meadows, and alpine rock faces. Due to its high altitude, the summit is covered in snow year-round, creating a sharp contrast between the white snow-capped peak and the dark rocks, which looks particularly spectacular in clear weather.Kazbegi · 60.1 km from Ananuri

Tbilisi sea is a large artificial reservoir located in the northeastern suburbs of Tbilisi. Built in the 1950s, it still serves as a source of urban water supply. Beaches, lawns, and walking paths are distributed around the lake, making it a popular spot for locals to cool off and play in the water during the summer: some sunbathe on the beach or go swimming, while others have picnics or play beach volleyball. Sailboats, jet skis, and water skis can often be seen crossing the lake, and interested visitors can also find places to experience water sports by the lakeside. In the evening, the lake surface reflects the distant mountains and the setting sun, making it very pleasant to sit on the shore and watch the sunset.Tbilisi · 48.7 km from Ananuri

The Clock Tower

7 reviews
The Clock Tower stands at the entrance of an alley in Tbilisi's Old Town, right next to the puppet theater founded by Rezo Gabriadze. The tower leans and features a mix of old and new bricks, looking from a distance like an old tower that might collapse at any moment. The walls are covered with handmade ceramic tiles, hiding small figurines, birds, animals, and playful patterns. The whole structure looks like a house straight out of a fairy tale book. Its signature is the hourly performance: on the hour, a small door at the top of the tower opens, an angel with golden wings leans out, and strikes the bell with a small hammer. To see the full process, it is recommended to wait on the street a few minutes in advance. Every day at noon and in the evening, a window at the base of the tower also hosts a puppet show called "The Circle of Life," which depicts the life cycle of meeting, starting a family, growing old, and saying goodbye in just a few minutes. You can watch it right from the street.Tbilisi · 53.9 km from Ananuri

We stopped at Ananuri on the way along the Georgian Military Highway in July. The fortress sits right by the water with mountains behind it — a very picturesque spot. Inside there's an old church, and you can climb the towers for views over the reservoir. Entry is free. It gets crowded, especially during the day, but the grounds are large enough. Easy to combine with a trip to Kazbek — it's right on the way. I'd recommend making a stop.

It's conveniently located at the start of a military highway, and most tourists heading to Kazbekistan pass by it. Taking 5-10 minutes to take photos at the mountaintop viewpoint is a convenient and effortless perk. The view depends heavily on the weather; a cloudy day diminishes the experience considerably.

Colorful summer in Ruicun. Visit a seaside city on weekends. The football team of the town where I live happened to play there that day, and I encountered a fan parade; then I watched the padel tennis open; I went to swim in the sea with a super long beach and watched a concert on the sand "mountaintop", and of course I couldn't miss walking on the forest road.

The Mother Fortress is located high in Georgia, from where you can see the whole of Georgia. In the evening, you can take a cable car up the mountain to wait for the sun to set and watch the sunset. The temperature in Tbilisi at night is only over 20 degrees in this season, which is really comfortable.

Start your City Walk tour. Liberty Square is the filming location for one of the Fast and Furious movies. You can take photos there. There are shopping malls and restaurants near the square, so you can choose to have lunch nearby. If you want to shop, you can compare prices and see if there are any attractive discounts.

The Gabriadze Theater's clock tower is the most magical and doll-like place in Tbilisi! We simply couldn't miss it. It looks like it came straight out of an old fairy tale: all crooked and whimsical, decorated with vibrant mosaics created by Rezo Gabriadze himself. We arrived just in time to see the doors at the very top open, and an angel with golden wings appear and begin striking the bell with a hammer. You could spend hours examining the details of this tower; every tile is unique. I highly recommend it!
