Takachiho Gorge

77 reviews
Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped gorge formed by the cooling and solidification of pyroclastic flows from the eruption of Mount Aso, followed by long-term erosion by the Gokase River. The banks are lined with steep cliffs approx. 80–100m high, where columnar joints are clearly visible. The emerald green river water and gray rock layers contrast with each other, creating a striking natural view. Manai Falls, located within the gorge, is approx. 17m high and is a representative view. Visitors can take a rowboat to enjoy the waterfall and cliffs up close from the water, or stroll along the approx. 1 km long trail to view the gorge scenery from different angles. There are viewing spots along the trail, including the Takachiho Three Bridges, where you can see the three arch bridges against the backdrop of the gorge. The Takachiho area has deep ties to Japanese mythology, and the rocks and waterfalls in the gorge are also associated with related legends. In spring and summer, the banks are lush with greenery; in the fall, the red leaves reflect on the emerald water, presenting different seasonal scenery. Boat tours are popular, so it is recommended to plan your time in advance if visiting during holidays.Takachiho · 32.5 km from Aso

4.9/5
206 reviews
Yufuin Onsen is famous for its abundant hot spring resources and tranquil pastoral scenery, with traditional Japanese inns, cafes, general stores, and art museums scattered throughout the streets. The mountain scenery of Mount Yufu adds a natural touch to the town. The local area mainly features simple hot springs, and some inns have open-air baths, allowing you to enjoy the mountain view while soaking. Yunotsubo Street is lined with dessert shops, handicraft stores, restaurants, and cafes, where traditional architecture complements the rural scenery. At the end of the street, Lake Kinrin presents a tranquil natural landscape, with lake water formed by the confluence of hot spring water and fresh water. On mornings in the fall and winter, thin mist often rises from the water surface, and the surrounding mountain shadows and trees are reflected in the lake, creating a serene view. In spring, flowers and trees dot the foothills; in the fall, the forest leaves gradually change color; and in winter, the lake surface is shrouded in mist. Hot springs, lakes, streets, and pastoral views intertwine to showcase the unique, leisurely atmosphere here.Yufu · 40.9 km from Aso

Lake Kinrin is one of the representative sightseeing spots in the Yufuin area. It is located at the foot of Mount Yufu. It was formerly known as Yuexia Pond. Later, a Confucian scholar saw the lake glittering like fish scales under the setting sun, and it was renamed Lake Kinrin from then on. In addition to the runoff injected by Yubuyue, there are also natural springs at the bottom of the lake, so Lake Kinrin is actually half a hot spring lake. In winter, the hot spring water meets the icy lake water to produce fog, which lingers around the lake and mountains, like a dream.Yufu · 41.9 km from Aso

Nakanoshima Island is connected by several bridges, and the Ukimido Hall on the island is a representative view. The walking path around the lake is approx. 2 km long, making it suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. Boat rental facilities are available by the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the lakeshore and islands from the water. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lake, while in winter, water birds often stop by. The park also features a Japanese garden, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and a Noh theater. The Japanese garden showcases traditional styles with its pond, artificial hills, dry landscape (karesansui), and tea house, offering changing scenery throughout the seasons; the Fukuoka Art Museum houses works by artists such as Dalí, Miró, and Chagall, as well as a collection of ancient Japanese art; and the Noh theater is used for traditional performances such as Noh and Kyogen. One of my favorite areas and attractions in Kitakyushu. The whole Aso area is beautiful. We were lucky enough to see horses in Kusasenri and go to the crater. It might be the off-season, but there were not many people in the view restaurant. You can sit as you like. It's so friendly. I want to bring my kids back in the summer to see the green scenery. I highly recommend Aso! You can also go to Kurokawa Onsen, which is great.

We recommend parent-child tours of Aso Farm Park I don't know if it's because it hasn't recovered after the epidemic or what, I can't see more than 50 people for 3 days and 2 nights. It's a good walk for such a large farm🤩 In addition to kissing the animals, there are many children inside Indoor facilities, adults can also cheap spa, worth coming again!

Even in the cloudy winter, it was still beautiful. When I first arrived in Aso, I thought Aso was a little small, but once I got here, I found a different Aso, so open. If I had time to wait for half an hour, the clouds would have dissipated, and the Aso Five Mountains would be right in front of me, and the rural village would be surrounded and protected by the mountains. It was so comfortable to walk and run in the grass. From the observatory, I found a trail going down all the way. I guess I can hike down the mountain from here. I walked in all directions and found several similar trails going down the mountain. I must come and experience it next time and enjoy the scenery from different heights and angles. It should be more beautiful in the summer when the grass is green.

Takachiho Gorge is a natural wonder formed from the remnants of a volcanic eruption, with its unique rock pillars forming a distinctive landscape left behind by the eruption. Every corner of Takachiho Gorge is filled with the charm of nature; from the V-shaped river channels and the rock formations to the waterfalls, everything showcases the awe-inspiring power of nature.

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.

What is very famous is that the trees here are very famous, there are the Father Cedar Tree and the Husband and Wife Tree, both of which are sacred trees over a hundred years old. The tour guide will explain to the guests how to enter the shrine and how to pray, so that people can have a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and etiquette.
